We ate Thursday evening at Smokey D's BBQ on Main St. in Chanute. Our waitress was helpful, cordial and attentive; and our food was on the table quickly. My husband and I both had the Thursday special: A burger covered with brisket, topped with cheese, then topped with either coleslaw or baked beans. Potato salad for the side. The brisket was delicious and tender, and the hamburger was very flavorful. Add a slathering of BBQ sauce, and you know this is worth a second trip to SE Kansas. I enjoyed the classic potato salad, but I do like how my husband makes it with a little Worcesterchire Sauce to kick it up a notch. We talked with the owner, Mark Davidson, and his wife. We also sampled the sweet and spicy BBQ sauce. We really need some of that when you get it in a bottle! We must come back to try other menu items. This restaurant is a jewel --- tasty food at a great price.

The restaurant is a combination of what looks to be an old industrial building with an uninsulated shed structure attached. The shed, the lower and larger dining area where you enter, is heated and air conditioned. Grab a table there. Today the AC was working hard. It was comfortable even on this hot muggy day. Nothing fancy here. A functional back street BBQ joint. Very nice and obviously patriotic folks run this restaurant. The lady that served us was pleasant and friendly. The restaurant offers the basics with a little of their own spin on the menu. For me, I tried something different, the Diablo Sandwich. Referred to on the menu as spicey. The lady serving us described it as a version of a Sloppy Joe (chopped brisket, BBQ sauce, peppers and onions). For the sides, I picked Cowboy Beans and Confetti Cole Slaw. The sandwich was very tasty. With several generous applications of the house made Hot BBQ sauce I was able to bring the heat level to what I consider spicey. Same with the beans. The slaw, average. My wife had the sliced brisket with the Rustic Potato salad. A fair serving of tender lean brisket. It had a smokey bark, not covered with an overpowering rub. Good, but she commented that it was a little dry. Sauce was needed. A big dallop of delicious fresh potato salad was her side dish. The restaurant is easy to find. It is a couple of blocks east of Patterson Blvd (HWY 69) on 8th street. Give it a try. Support veteran owned businesses.

The bone separated from the meat and it was tender. Michelle told me to taste her smoked sausage ‍. Didn't even know this place was around until we were told, and you can easily miss it. Inside - 4/5 - Inside is nice and very clean. Plenty of places to sit. You go past multiple seating areas to the back to order. Food - This can range from 5/5 to 1/5 depending on what you order. We ordered a little of everything off the entire menu. Anything with bread wasn't great. Which honestly isn't a slam at all. It's a bbq meat place. Reality is, sandwiches and things usually are not great at places like this. The specialty dogs and sandwiches were just kinda boring. They were messy, and the great meat flavors were ruined by boring basic bread. Almost all of the meats were AMAZING. Brisket, pork, hot links, and turkey were all fantastic. 5/5 for sure. You can't go wrong with any of these. Plus if you like baked potatoes, this is the place to go. It's at the very top of the menu. The only meat that was really bad was the Italian sausage. They were very very dry and no flavor. All of us took a bite or two, and we tossed the rest in the trash.
