Mash and I are becoming fast friends. It's a beautiful bourbon bar tucked inside the historic cigar factory saddled up to it's Mercantile counterpart. The feel of an upper-king-hot-spot without the lines, 22 year olds, or terrible parking... in fact they have plenty of parking in the evening cause the lot outside is basically empty. The bourbon and whiskey list is awe-inspiring and Sam makes a stunning Old Fashioned every time. The drink prices range from kind-of-high to money-means-nothing-to-me. If you're not interested in dropping last months electric bill on a few drinks, the bartenders will be happy to recommend the best brown-water options that won't break the bank. Or go for a Coors Banquet which is always on draught. Although they're making classy cocktails, the shuffleboard, indoor bocce, and what seems to be my early 2000's playlist constantly on repeat, everyone's noses are on ground level instead of up in the air where you might expect them. Pro Tip: Take a first date to Mercantile. If it sucks, excuse yourself to the restroom and sneak into Mash for a night cap. They share bathrooms in the connected hallway. Then go back to your Tinderella or exit through Mash and call an Uber. read more

We came here for a continued birthday and retirement celebration for a friend. This was my first time here so I wasn't sure what to expect. There was plenty of on-site parking, but the entrance was a bit confusing. There are two businesses at this location, but the Mercantile side was closed. There appeared to be a private party going on upstairs too. It sounded like they were going to come through the ceiling at times. On this night there was a Jaeger competition going on so several of us tried and enjoyed one of their concoctions. They have an extensive list of bourbons, ryes, and whiskeys, but the cocktail list was a little small and pricey. We sampled several food items. My personal favorite was the pork rinds. This spot features an indoor bocce court, shuffle board, and other games. The space is a little small so if everyone was playing, it could get too crowded quickly. They were not providing table service but there were signs on each table notifying us to go to the bar to order. Service was good, but a little slow as there were really only two bartenders. In all fairness, alot of attention was being diverted to the Jaeger comp, which I also found interesting. read more

Mash is a favorite of mine. They host a bocce league that I participate in so I find myself there quite often. Staff is great and always on top of bar and table orders. They offer a great selection of local and regional craft brews. The burgers and curly fries are first rate! They have a great indoor bocce court and a tabletop shuffleboard. Always have a great time at this place! The staff are super cordial and professional and the drinks are tasty. Believe it or not the food is also very very good and they have nightly specials. Some nights they have trivia, not really my thing but that draws a crowd and other nights they have some live music. Open later so no need to rush! Mash is--hands down--my favorite bar in Charleston. It's not even a competition. I love the dark and laid-back atmosphere and the option to play indoor bocce or shuffleboard (which is IMO the worst bar game ever invented, but I forgive them for this oversight). The drinks are expertly crafted, and I've never had a bad cocktail. My favorite time to visit is when Teddy or Elliott are working behind the bar, as their passion for liquor really shows through in every drink they make. Strike up a conversation with them and you're likely to learn the entire history of a brand of whiskey you've never even heard of before (which is now your favorite thing in the whole world). They're the kinds of bartenders who take the time to chat with everyone so you start to feel like this is your bar; you belong here. The food is also fantastic! Whether you're ordering off of the seasonally-inspired menu or visiting one of the rotating food trucks they have on the weekends, you're in for something delicious (the pretzel bites, the fried Brussels, and the fried oysters and boudin are my favorites). We decided it was too early to head home and thought we'd try out the Cigar Factory for a refreshment and appetizer. Well as it turned out we are at Mash in the Cigar Factory building. A cool bar discovery where Kyle a magician of Manhattans served up exceptional cocktails and historical info along with the daily special low down. I will be returning on Monday to try out the Prime-rib special, starting @ 4:pm. Tacos & Tequila on Tuesdays 4-10pm. I give a 5 rating to the music vibe playing here. Motivation to return often! Can't believe it took me four years to make it to this place. Tucked back into the corner of the cigar factory area, this place has got serious ambience and specials pretty much every night. I've been now for the taco Tuesday (two of em, delicious with curly fries and a High Life for just $10) and Prime Rib Monday ($21 for a serious ass prime rib, baked potato, and onion rings). Food specials aside, the rest of their food and drink menu are really interesting and reasonably priced. I respect anywhere that offers food deals not just on a bland ass burger, but quality stuff. Super unique cocktails featuring everything from Gin to Fernet, I'll shell out $12 for something that well-though-out. Both times I went, the crowd was pretty sparse...but both were early week and not weekend. Bar Mash needs attention and your business. They've got incredible food and drinks and music. I can't imagine a bad time here, and hate I haven't been coming for the whole time I've lived here. Check em out. read more

Why 5 stars? Because I had the best cocktail of my life here. --- --- --- While there were many amazing stops on my first visit to Charleston, this was one of my favorites. And there are two huge reasons for this: 1) I'm normally much more of a beer than cocktail drinker. I went with my standard for round one. But for round two, I was feelin' froggy, and oh how it paid off. I never wrote down the name of the drink, but if the drink menu hasn't changed since mid-May, it would have been the Captain Kidd Punch. It had egg in it, which made it nice frothy, and it was tasted like clouds from heaven. I have dreamed and yearned for this cocktail every time I've ordered one elsewhere, but nothing stacks up. 2) They have table shuffleboard, and it entertained me thoroughly. I'm not normally a "go sit at a bar and look at each other" type. I like drinking and doing other things - like games. This was the perfect bar game, while enjoying my lovely, egg-filled cocktail. The bartenders here are fantastic - super nice and friendly, they remember faces, and they have great cocktail suggestions and cocktail making skills. This place was really nice to go watch football! We just wanted a few drinks and to finish watching the game so we didn't eat but bartenders were knowledgeable and attentive so no complaints. To be completely honest, I stopped in on my way home after a Yelp event to use the restroom (their restrooms are really nice) but it was completely empty on a random night so I stayed and chatted with the bartender and server. Yes. Yes. Yes. As a bourbon lover, I was very excited to try Mash because of their extensive selection. All my expectations were met - they had a ton to choose from and went above and beyond to satisfy my request for recommendations. I stuck with one ounce pours so I could try a couple. I also have to say: They created the best Old Fashioned I think I've ever tasted. Right now they have their very own Four Roses Single Barrel that they use in their "Mash Old Fashioned" and it's worth every penny. $15 for a cocktail is steep, I know. BUT it is *really* good. And the bourbon is limited. On that note, get there soon because they are down to the last bottles of this special bourbon. I am holding off on a full five star review because we didn't order food. Just went for drinks. I think we would have stayed for dinner if something on the menu jumped out and enticed us, but it didn't. The ladies next to us shared some Brussels sprouts and a charcuterie plate, both looked good. And the gentleman to my right had the Mash Burger which also looked good and was a huge portion. But, still, we didn't eat. Next time I will check out the food. Final items to note about Bar Mash ... They have an indoor bocce court, shuffleboard and an arcade machine (complementary! Mash is on pace to become one of my favorite Charleston bars. Having already visited Mercantile several times, I was overdue to explore its boozy counterpart. The space itself is warm and pub-like, with exposed brick and curtains along the back wall. I just missed Happy Hour, which ended at 6PM but had good deals, on par with prices across town, but with better drinks and, in particular, bourbon pours. Mash's cocktail menu is creative and extensive, but their real collection is in dozens of bottles of bourbon and whiskey. I ended up with a delicious Staff Selected Four Roses single barrel Old Fashioned, with grapefruit bitters. With drinks in hand my fiancee and I sat down with one of Mash's board games, listened to Red Cedar Review, a local Bluegrass band, and ended up playing bocce, and table shuffleboard. For a relatively small space, Mash packs a big punch! When they don't have live music scheduled, Mash's jukebox lets you pick the jams. The only deviation from a glowing review is the price, at about $25 for two cocktails. The craft and ingredients put into making them is certainly worth the expense, but don't hesitate to ask a mixologist for a great beer recommendation to save a few bucks. Great place to grab drinks and a light bite for happy hour. Their charcuterie board is the usual that I order. Their mustard and jam on the board is amazing. They also have bocce and shuffleboard here, which sets them apart from the other bars downtown. It also makes for a fun time. Service is friendly and the ambiance is cool and warm. I am a fan of Mercantile, so I'll have to come back for actual dinner sometime! read more

Located in the old Cigar Factory, Bar Mash is a a very cool place. The building was originally built as a cotton mill in 1882 and later converted to its namesake use as a cigar factory starting in 1903. The bar is rather dimly lit inside but this lends an interesting ambiance to the place. The bartenders I've had are really good. My favorite drink there is the St. Cecilia Society Punch (brandy 2 ways, Smith & Cross, green tea, peach, pineapple, bubbles). There's actually a sister restaurant called Mercantile that is accessible via the hallway where the restrooms are located or from one of two doors near the corner of the building. Friday evening, 6ish, party of two. This is our second trip to Mash and it's growing on me. I like the swanky/relaxed decor. I love that it's at the Cigar Factory. I love that there is parking. Lots and lots of parking. I love that the crowd isn't the usual young downtown Charleston snob scene. Always an interesting drink menu, with an ever-changing special board. I went for the Passion Fruit Mei Tai on the special board = $8. Hubby went for the Revelry LA VIE FANTINE Grissette 4.73% ABV, - crisp, refreshing beer, a great option for the summer heat. Bar staff is helpful, the place is clean. Only complaint, you do pay downtown Chucktown drink prices. The specials board can help you save a couple bucks. Watched a group of guys play table shuffleboard and had a nice happy hour together. Will return for sure! read more

Husband and I went here to kill time before our dinner reservation downtown. We went on a Monday evening literally as the door opened. I really enjoyed the laid back feel of the bar with its shuffleboard, arcade, and various other media of entertainment, as those of us in Charleston know that most downtown bars feel...well... fancy and uptight. Elliot was our bartender and he was awesome. I had two, very strong cocktails- the Green Kimono and the Wicked Witch. We went to MASH with a large group of friends for a birthday celebration. The atmosphere was really cool, dark with high-top wooden tables, a shuffleboard table, Bocce ball, and an old-school jukebox (limited selection music to maintain the low-key, old school vibes. You won't find your typical alcohol selections (i.e. Absolut) but they have an extremely large whiskey selection, and a variety of local & nationwide brews. The bar staff are SUPER friendly, welcoming, and attentive. I would have given this 5 Stars but the food was terrible! Granted, we were the only ones who had ordered food in the bar, so maybe the kitchen was "out of touch" that night. We had toast with avocado that tasted like lemon juice, topped with a soupy crab salad, and an odd pomegranate garnish. The buffalo chips (I forget the title) were like scooping a spoonful of salt into your mouth. We picked at them, because we were starving, so we didn't bother mentioning it that night. Higher price drinks really are not my style but occasionally worth the trip to somewhere and this place has got a better vibe in my opinion than some of the places with very good specialty cocktails. We met the great bartender who was a friend of one of our party. What a great bartender. Teddy. Great with suggestions. Unusual drinks that were not too far out but had some very distinct flavors. Mine was the V for Vendita. Wow, great flavored and the smoked salt on the glass was excellent as a compliment to the drink. I tried everyone's drink and all had such great flavors. We left our friend there but not before Teddy rought ous some drink that was really unusual in that it was green for summer and had red ice cubes that melted red juice into the drink making it fall so you enjoyed 2 seasons and a slightly different flavor as you drank it. How cool. Love the shuffleboard table and the Shut the Box game which I never had played before. We plan on returning for a couple snacks as they look pretty decent as well. read more

My sister and I stopped by for Happy Hour. If you're looking for "bar food" (queso, cheese fries, etc) and discounted prices on wine/drinks, without large crowds, this is a great choice. Their HH menu has lots of discounted food and beverage options, and everything we tried was very good - with the exception of our initial batch of stale chips. Our server - Joy - had a fresh batch made for us as soon as she heard that ours were stale - without us even asking - great and friendly service! I wish I hadn't heard anything about Mash before we had a chance to visit. It was hyped up so much that I was underwhelmed. It looks like Halls and Royal American had a baby! There is a jukebox and an old school arcade machine with free games! The decor is chill. To me it felt like the most expensive dive bar in Charleston. We did not have any bar snacks, we went strictly for drinks. They have a great bourbon selection with rare and tasty bourbons alike! They had an interesting cocktail menu but I will say that their wine was priced a little high. We will go back to try more bourbons and especially the food. As for this visit I didn't see or experience anything that I couldn't get at some other bar in the city. read more

I gotta say, for as cool as I was hoping it was, I was kinda disappointed. The Bourbon menu is HUGE and awesome and the varieties of beer available was also nice. Beyond that though, pretty limited. A few scotches and missing some other bar standards for non-bourbon drinkers. We had a group of about 10 and we originally had our own server, but then she ended up behind the bar and we ended up having to go to the bar to get our drinks. The kind of cocktails they make take a bit, sure, but they would sell more if they had more people making them. The bocce court is nice to have inside, but wasted space really in a small bar. Not to mention its anything but flat. Imagine playing free pool on a crooked table. I didnt try any of the food so i cant speak to it other than to say it looked good. Not a huge fan of this place. Had to grab something downtown and decided to hit this place up on the way back up the peninsula because, FREE parking. The inside is cool, even has an indoor bocce court and shuffle board. I did totally dig the atmosphere upon arrival. Things went south after that... My boyfriend and I both ordered different drinks, neither of which were really that great. Had they not cost a fortune (on par with downtown prices/but still classified as a fortune), we probably wouldn't even have finished them. On top of that, the place was absolutely packed, every table was full, the bar was full, the bocce court was full of standing room only, none of which lended to a comfortable atmosphere to grab a drink. The music was also very very loud which made it hard to talk. If there's not live music, I don't want to have to shout at the person I'm with. I feel like this place could be really trendy and even a bit intimate if it was less crowded and quieter. Maybe we went on a bad night? There's too many other options in the area to want to give this place a shot again. read more

A group of friends and I went to Charleston for my bf's birthday this past weekend and stopped in at Mash on Sunday for some drinks and food. I'm not one to write reviews very often at all, but this place is AMAZING. Teddy and Elliot were probably the best bartenders I've ever had. Really sweet guys who had incredible knowledge on all the alcohol in the bar (and they had great taste in music! Parov Stelar!!). We chatted with them all night and they made us feel right at home. Had some Pappy Van Winkle which was incredible, and another Bourbon Elliot recommended called Bookers. It was a 25 year old batch and some of the best Bourbon I've had (and I'm not really a bourbon drinker). Not only were the drinks good, but the food was amazing! We got the Mash Burger and Croque Monsieur. Trust me when I say you WILL NOT be disappointed coming to this place. Thanks for a great time guys! read more

This is a great cocktail bar. I visited twice, once on Christmas Eve & again a few days later. On xmas eve, the place was buzzing with people coming and going throughout the night as random players engaged in shuffleboard while enjoying their cocktails w/complimentary pizza & chicken wings. I ordered a few whiskey cocktails which were specials made by Teddy. My favorite was the Canadian special, which included some maple & mint fixings. They also offer some great beer, either on tap or in a can. The bar is a great place to get cozy, meet friendly strangers and engage with the bartenders. I wish I had tried more off their menu, but the pork sliders I had were delish. I will definitely return when I visit Charleston again. read more
