Old time western music, humor, a little yodeling, lots of food and lots of people. Just north of Durango. You choose between chicken and beef or a combo- then they add beans with bacon, applesauce, biscuits, and a big square of gingerbread! There were at least 200 people in the audience, but they ran us through the food line in record time. Food and music were great. The cowboy singers were classic. This was so much fun!!! We loved the little village you could walk around before dinner. Everyone was SO nice. I had a gift certificate and I couldn't believe how far it stretched! I had the steak and it was so good! My husband and daughter were okay with their food but it would be nice if you had a vegetarian option (like the other chuckwagon dinner). They ended up eating sides. The show was great. Super fun and funny. We lucked out with front row seats which really made my daughter feel special. Loved seeing the show under the stars! We loved this dinner and entertainment! It gave you that real cowboy feel! The ambience was like a little western town . There was a little chapel there a shooting range a little train ride, which was free, that took you around the park . There were also a couple stores and then the dinner area is a well covered area, which is probably covered during rain and winter although our time was summer and they were able to open up the whole area. This is where you have dinner which is served and is done very well as to get a couple Hundred people served within a matter of minutes.! The food was amazing and you can have chicken, beef or steak along with Cowboy beans, foil covered potato and some applesauce and fresh corn bread that tasted more like a cake delicious! Easy enough to make reservations and the show was fun, lighthearted and people of all ages were enjoying it. The food? Meh. They serve you at the front with metal plates and scoop out the food and place on your plate. We both went with the BBQ beef and felt it had too much sugar in it for our tastes. Same with the baked beans. Uncomfortable picnic table seating. Get there early if you have kids so they can run and play. Gemstone mining, etc. candy shop and some other shops. Super easy 4 stars...more like a 4.5. Loved it. Good clean fun! If you're in the Durango area and looking for a fun, family-friendly thing to do, the Bar D is sure-fire fun. It's best to call and make a reservation because it can be sold out at times. (970) 247-5753. You'll need to hold your reservation with a credit card, so be sure and call and cancel if you can't make it. I'm not sure what the grace period is for cancellation. You have three choices for the meal, ribeye steak for $46, chicken and roast beef combo for $36, and choice of chicken or roast beef for $32 ($16 for ages 4-10). The price includes the show, and the tip. Great deal!! I took my 91-year-old dad who has trouble walking. I called in advance to arrange special seating for him and they said they would do that. When we arrived they cheerfully gave my dad a ride up to the venue in a golf cart. Nicely done! However, there was no special seating for him, it was the same as for anyone else. He uses a walker and we were able to get him to his seat without much trouble. We were there on a Monday evening, not too crowded, it would have been much more of an issue if there were a full house. There's lots to do besides the show. For instance, a little train to ride, gift shops, walking paths, and a playground for the kids. They are very well organized and know how to make things run smoothly. When it was supper time we were dismissed table by table to go through a line where they sorta "plop" the good on your metal plate as you walk through the mess hall. I felt like I was in the military, but hey, it works. They had all of us served in less than 20 minutes! You have your choice of coffee or lemonade. Once we sat down they offered drink seconds at our tables. Once supper is over you bus your own table and take your tableware to the back of the room. It's pretty quick and easy. The guys in the band were actually servers during supper time. We didn't know that until we saw them all on stage. The food was pretty good. It doesn't look like a lot but I was full and could barely finish the beef and chicken combo. Not only that, after everyone was served they offered seconds for anyone who wanted them. Most people didn't go for it because they were so full. I'm not sure if they do that every night, but it was cool they did it the night we were there. After dinner is the show It's full-on cowboy music with an awesome quartet. They keep the show moving at a great pace and it's over before you know it. It's a combination of skillful musicianship and playful comedy. My favorite was the Old MacDonald had a misfit farm parody. There's a sign there requesting guests to take their hats off during the show but they don't announce it or enforce it. That's not good. If you ever have to sit behind someone with a cowboy hat you will not be pleased. Although it's family-friendly, some little kids were getting squirmy and cranky during the show. There is a playground nearby and you can probably hear the show from there if your children are getting restless. They should make an announcement about that too. At the end of the show, they gave my dad a ride back to the parking lot in the golf cart. Again, nice touch! The staff is awesome. I would definitely call it a "must do" if you're ever in the Durango area during the summer months. read more

Unfortunately the food could be better chicken and roast beef smothered in BBQ sauce all they had for the backed potatoes was a pat of butter, beans were horrible. On The entertainment, maybe more mixing of more current music or rag time with their old era music that they play. So much fun! Food was wonderful! The only thing I personally didn't enjoy was the applesauce. Chicken, beef, bbq sauce, baked beans, baked potato (butter only), roll type biscuit, spice cake, lemonade...all delicious!!! They really do hurry you through the meal, so if your table isn't one of the first served, and/or you are talking a lot with your table mates, you will have to scarf it down towards the end. I highly recommend this place! We were visiting from Phoenix and arrived at about 5pm. There were plenty of activities for kids before 630 supper... shops, train ride (with amazing views) blacksmith, haye ride and more! The workers were very friendly throughout. Such a good time, exactly what we knew it would be. Great place to hang out, great music and just an overall awesome experience. We lived in Durango for a few months two years ago and wanted to go but missed it. This is a great place for families with younger children with various things for them to do. Teens will find it not their style and too immature for their tastes. The tables are picnic style and get very uncomfortable real quick. Take a stadium seat or blanket because you will be sitting for a bit before eating till show finishes. The shops are nice but yes pricey as any other souvenir shop. Food: we ordered and paid $57 each for ribeye. However, 2 of the steaks were a NY strip and over cooked so they were dry. Not what I paid for! My adult kiddos didn't want to complain. So they roughed through it. Potatoes were hard and not fully cooked. Over all, the nostalgia of eating on tin plates and being served lemonade or cowboy coffee was great. Service: fast, some were friendly, some not. We got the "that's not my job, help yourself" vibes when we asked for napkins. So go with the mindset that they are servers not your waiters. They do come and refill drinks, but they go by fast, so be loud with your request. If they miss you, they don't like to backtrack, as we witnessed. Went there last weekend, and it was fun. Getting there too early was a little boring as the little train and the shooting gallery cost extra so not much to do. The food was good and plenty of it. It was nice that they kept coming back to give refills on drinks. The seating was pretty tight. The picnic tables were so close together it was hard to get in your spot. The show was definitely a solid 5 stars! Amazing voices and very entertaining. I was a little let down by the rest of the experience. There is a place in Arizona called Blazin M Ranch, kind of by Sedona. Once you get in all the activities are free (shooting gallery, axe throwing). Blazin M is more partial to my heart and feels more authentic. However, I am not trying to put this down because the price for the food and the entertainment was nothing to complain about. It just makes it hard when you have another place to compare it to. Families traveling to Durango will love this. And fun for couples too. Worth the money for what you get. read more

We made the beautiful drive from NM (Four Corners Area) to Durango, CO and OMG the state of Colorado at least here is amazingly beautiful. Anyways, we arrived to Bar D's (the area was stunningly beautiful as well) which has a small playground for kids, a small chapel, small store where you can buy fudge and other delicious items and they even have a small train that you can ride around the property for a nominal charge and it's about a 5-7 minute ride very nice. The main attraction is the cowboy meal which consists of your choice of steak, chicken and something else I forget (because all I wanted was the steak) along with baked potatoe, apple sauce, beans, roll, cornbread and your choice of unlimited lemonade and coffee all for just $43. Chicken was $33. After you enjoy your dinner you are treated to a free comedy country music show which was very nice and entertaining. Some people might find it cheesy but it was great entertainment and if you like country music you will definitely enjoy the show. If you are ever in Durango, CO definitely check out Bar D's Chuck Wagon. The food was good for the price. The quality of the steak is average but they give you a large size. The steak won't leave you with the impression that this a very nice steak but it was still enjoyable. If you are still hungry afterwards they give you free seconds of whatever is left after every one gets their initial meal. This was a nice gesture because I can't stand businesses that throw away food. read more

I've been here several times during my visits (and eventual move) to Durango, and it's always a good time. They put on a great show! The performers are all great singers and musicians, and the music is a throwback to good ole cowboys. The food is surprisingly good and filling for being basic meat and potatoes. Definitely try the ribeye. Note: You eat first and clean up before the performance starts. I kind of wish you could enjoy supper through the show, but at the same time, I didn't feel super rushed to finish my meal before showtime. There is a fun Western village that you can shop for souvenirs and take a mini-train ride through the property. It's a really great time for a family outing. read more

My 11 and 14-year-old granddaughters requested to come here to the Bar D again! They absolutely love it we come every year that they visit. The people are so wonderful here, it is a true American experience!! And you see handmade items in the shops that people in the area have made. They are totally prepared for weather with this huge canvas awning in case it rains no worries, you will be comfy! The food is delicious and very plentiful. The band is created with award-winning performers not only musically, but wonderful voices too!!! we will probably come another time or two this summer because of friends we have visiting that we want to bring here! read more

Dinner lasted for an hour and the show lasted for an hour. The performance was a lot of fun and the men performing are very talented. Their voices and instrumentals were excellent. The bar-d is a wonderful family tradition. My family and I have been going for years, and have never been disappointed. The food is good! It's a cowboy dinner so nothing fancy but it has good portions, and after everyone had been through once they always invite anyone who's still hungry to come back for more until it's all gone. The show is fun, they are all talented performers, and it's good for the whole family. The best is when the 89 year old founder Cy Scarborough comes out for a song or two. It's a good deal. I admit it, I was skeptical. But we were visiting family in Durango, and this was their suggestion for dinner and entertainment, so what was I going to do? It turns out I should have quieted my cynical city girl. Bar D Chuckwagon Suppers was a lot of fun and quality entertainment to boot. You pay $21 for a meal ticket and claim a stretch of picnic table for your group. When dinner is ready, they clang a dinner bell and people proceed in an orderly fashion by table into the mess hall. The experience is much like a Western-style cafeteria. You take a divided tin plate and then people in hairnets scoop roast chicken, baked potato, cornbread, beans, and the most delicious cake onto it. All of the food was surprisingly good, and the staff was generous about providing seconds after everyone had gotten firsts. Once you return to your seat, the entertainment begins. The dinner show consists of a quartet performing musical/comedy pieces for about 90 minutes. In keeping with the theme, most of the show is old-style country music. I was very impressed with the quality of the performances. These were genuinely talented musicians. It was a fun, upbeat performance and the crowd had a lot of enthusiasm and energy. Bar D Chuckwagon Suppers was the best kind of kitschy fun. If you're in Durango and want to experience something "Western," give this a go! read more

Such a fun experience!! We visited at the recommendation of our Air BnB host and were not disappointed! The entire complex is super fun with TONS to do for kids especially. Our boys, ages 9 and 6, loved panning for gold, riding the train, shooting the revolver, and especially playing on the playground. The staff was super friendly, and everyone was there for a good time which made it even more fun. The food was probably our least favorite part of the night, I would definitely spring for the steak as it looked tasty; the chicken and beef were both really saturated with BBQ sauce which was a little overwhelming and the potato was difficult to eat, but we loved the beans and the homemade biscuits! Props to the staff for feeding everyone so quickly, as well. Even with the food not being our favorite, everything else about the evening made up for it and the super talented and highly entertaining band was really the highlight. Some very skilled musicians, singing some classic cowboy tunes was a special treat for us Californians (we don't get a lot of that in the Bay Area where we were visiting from). NOTE: It was raining the entire time we were here. The canvas cover over the eating/stage are was keeping us dry from the elements. We wandered around the shops and spouse bought some chocolate from the chocolate store. It was pretty pricy. She later said it wasn't quite worth the price but it was still quite good - four pieces of chocolate for about $9. The art gallery was very good. Featuring local artists. Many works of art mostly oil on canvas were hanging and they were all country (cowboy/cowgirl) themed. Most of the other attractions: small train-ride and the like were closed due to the rain. We sat at our table and played games until dinner was served. They gave instructions on how things worked and then had a moment of silence. I was able to eat a baked potato (asked for two) and as many baked beans as I wanted (went back for seconds on the beans). I skipped eating the meat but did get a chicken on my plate so the spouse could have the "combo" for the price of a single meat (more on that in a bit). I skipped the biscuit (milk) and also the spice cake (eggs). The apple sauce had corn syrup in it and I did sample that - very rough crushed apples with a very sweet flavor. In fact even the beans were sweet - brown sugar flavored (??). Spouse got the single meat ticket as did I and I grabbed a chicken and she grabbed the roast. She gave me her potato (I ended up with 3 spuds) and I gave her the chicken. The ticket-seller had suggested this strategy to us so we did it that way. Spouse said the roast was very juicy and tender and the chicken was tender yet still firm with a good mouth feel. The BBQ sauces on both were slightly different but both were sweet and after eating the biscuit and cake she felt "sugared-out". She was very satisfied without the need for seconds and really enjoyed all the food. After about 20-ish minutes, they announced you could take your plates up to the back and get ready for the entertainment. The entertainment was by the Bar D Wranglers. They sang country songs - some funny, some serious, some joyous. It was very good. They told jokes along the way reacting with the crowd - meaning they weren't just canned jokes. These were good artists with really good skills. They had a yodeler who was very good and not annoying at all. The fiddler was also very good (they played Devil Went Down To Georgia). The entertainment was just the right amount of time - about an hour. I noted that youth of all ages were tapping or moving to the songs rhythms even the two teenagers (??) or twenty-somethings who sat at our table.
