If I could give this place six stars I would!! The food here is amazing! I've heard about this place for many years and just never tried it. I had the ham and cheese omelette and home fries. It came with 2 pancakes. I ordered a half order of biscuits and gravy, and my taste buds did the happy dance. The biscuits and gravy are homemade!! You don't find often when the biscuits and gravy didn't come out of a package. I highly recommend coming here. I will definitely be back, this is by far the best breakfast place in Merced. The Bar B Q Pit is a good old fashioned coffee shop type of restaurant that just exudes nostalgia from the 50's and 60's. I have enjoyed breakfast, lunch, dinner and catering for work events and I have yet to have a bad meal. My personal favorites are the hamburger steak and the hot turkey sandwich. The restaurant is always clean and the staff is always friendly and welcoming! A solid choice when looking for a home style cooked meal without having to do the cooking and cleaning! Side note: I love supporting local businesses and the owner of this place does as well. He is known to give back to the community and I find that pretty awesome! read more

I got the Philly and the meat was strange. The bread was soggy and loaded with butter. I wanted toasted sourdough not wet butter bread. The onion rings were okay. They were very greasy. I also asked server if they were the crispy batter or regular and she said crispy and they were regular. This USED to be a good place to eat, went in and placed a to go order for my mother and I on a Sunday, Philly and a steak sandwich, rare. Got home to discover the Philly was a big piece of dry bread with barely any meat and a couple Strings of burnt onion, steak sandwich was cremated to death and dryer than a bucket of sand. They were closed but I called back the next day and asked to speak to a manager and was told to call back between certain hours when Jesus was in, I called back three or four times and each time I was told to call he was never there supposedly. I finally went in during the day about a week later to voice my concerns (had pictures on my phone of the food) and the day waitress even said oh yeah, I would not have served that! the food is good during the day, but you don't want it at night time. Ha! Found that out the hard way. A couple friends even told me they were told the same thing. Same waitress even said well the steaks are so thin. It's hard to cook them the way people want them... Scott's diner doesn't have any problem cooking a steak correctly, neither do plenty of other places around town. Jesus, thanks for getting back to me. Not a real bbq place. They don't even smoke or bbq here. Looks like everything is made somewhere else and heated back up. I ask the waitress, do you smoke or bbq on site she goes uhhhh yes. Sounds sketchy to me. I ordered the ribeye sandwich, the thinnest slice ribeye ever with no flavor at all. The beans were good. While on business we tried the Bar B Q Pit. This older restaurant fits the town and it's down home feel. The service was friendly and prompt. Both myself and my wife each ordered BBQ plates. They served a decent portion of meat and sides, but not quality bbq. They piled on an overly sweet sauce that took away from the meat. The crowd was local and friendly. Just the bbq was not really what your hoping for in a BBQ place. read more

This is unlike any bbq I've ever had. The smell of barbecue never seems to get into the air. Very bland.

Love, love, love the pork ribs here. Flavorful, tender and meaty. They use a really great BBQ sauce, too. You can order to go, as I did, and the food was still wonderful after my one hour drive home from work. Nice, friendly staff. I didn't have to wait long for my order to be prepared. read more

The gravy was pretty much just flour and milk, ZERO FLAVOR, unless you like the taste of uncooked flour. 4/7 of us barely made it home before we got major diarrhea. We also ordered the special of the night which was a large prime rib of beef. Rare is what was ordered with all the trimmings. No complains from the lovely missus as she devoured the chunk of meat. My two cod fish however could have been better. Yes I'm a senior, but the two tiny pieces of cod were barely enough for a ten year old. No matter, the baked potato was eaten skin and all. Waitstaff was friendly and efficient. Perhaps next time I should stick to the Chili Verde or get the Chili Verde as a side dis to go.
