I literally come here every single weekend because of the new flavor of the week! I'm constantly checking their Instagram to see what the flavor is - and it never disappoints! This week was blueberry and brown sugar soft serve - to die for. The blueberry is very refreshing, and almost tastes like a blueberry - pear. If you don't like blueberries, after this you will! The brown sugar flavour is also very creamy, and not too sweet. When you come here, you know exactly what you're paying for and how much - $5 a pop, cash only. Also tried the orange creamsicle popsicle. It was nostalgic because it reminded me of my childhood - growing up eating orange creamsicles. Their new flavours keep me coming back constantly. Using local and in-season ingredients they craft some of the most delicious gelato I've ever had. Bar Ape is a great addition to the St. Clair West food scene. I cannot think of a better way to end a delightful dinner at Nodo than with a Gelato Bar at Bar Ape (trust me - you're going to want to skip that Cannoli at Nodo). If this is your first time here, do not feel overwhelmed by the plethora of choices. Here are my thoughts: THE BEST - Chocolate Hazelnut Gelato Bar is my all-time favourite. Think Haagen Dazs ice cream bars but with a thin chocolate coating and a creamier filling. I only wish there were more hazelnut bits on the chocolate coating. SECOND BEST - Pistachio Gelato Bar is also really good. It has a rich, nutty flavour and creamy texture. THE WORST - Cucumber Melon Gelato Bar tasted like iced cucumber. The flavour was too light and the gelato was not smooth - it ended up in the garbage. BUT WHAT ABOUT THE SOFT SERVE, NANCY?! IMHO, if you are visiting for the first time, you may feel the urge to get the soft serve because it's Instagram-worthy and makes for a great photo (I am guilty of this). However, it does not taste as good as it looks. Skip the soft serve and get the gelato bar! If things get messy, they have a water spray and a roll of paper towel on the side for your convenience. I applaud Bar Ape for their inventive flavours like Salted Pineapple and Mint, Blueberry Tarragon, and Chamomile and Scotch. They carry the staple flavours but the "Bar of the Day" adds some excitement regardless if it's a hit or a miss. Make sure to follow them on Instagram to get updates on their "Bar of the Day." If you like creamy ice cream, this is a pretty good place to go. They have quite the selection of flavours, I had the lemon ice cream bar. I love citrus-y flavours and this one was good. Personally, I'm a fan of gelatos and sorbets but this place is not bad It's location is a nice quiet area, with outdoor seating. Nothing near the quality stuff that you can get in Italy (if you are looking for the authentic Italian gelato experience). Tried both the soft serve (sour cherry/brown butter) and a ice cream bar (mango chocolate). While the flavours seem fresh, I found both to be a bit underwhelming. Amazingly delicious gelato bars. I had the pistachio flavour and did not expect a hard, crunchy yet creamy coating over the gelato. Loved it! My husband had their soft serve - Ontario yellow plum ( I think) and chamomile twist. It was a great combo with the tartiness from the plum along with the very distinct flavour of the chamomile. This gelato soft serve was very insta worthy. We got the twist of goat milk and raspberry. They both complemented each other well with a good balance of creaminess, tart, and tangy. The only downside was the portions were quite tiny. Other than that, very good and would try the gelato bars next time. read more

Bar Ape is our favourite go-to place for Gelato! After going there first a couple of months ago, Fabienne and I are regulars. We end up going at least twice a week--- and have to refrain from going more often! The flavours are all unique and delicious. Ranging from fresh apricots to sage, lemon and even ginger, each creation is a culinary work of art. Even when two flavours are combined in a twist, you are able to taste each flavour distinctly, adding to the mouth-watering experience. The texture of the soft-serve is outstanding... not too soft, with enough density and texture to be satisfying. The bars are fantastic... the raspberry/chocolate bar is our standard. It's amazing that, each time we go, no matter what time or on what day, there is always a line-up of at least six people, if not many more. I cannot encourage you enough to go. Bar Ape is a local treasure. Hats off to James and his partners for doing a consistently outstanding job over a number of years. read more

It was so hard making a decision because everything looks amazing. I had the coconut and pineaple twist soft serve and it was fantastic. Fresh, light, and a great serving size (not too little, not so much that you get a belly ache). Way better than Disneyworld's dole whip. I tried a bite of a friend's blueberry tarragon (the bar of the day last wednesday) and it was pretty good - actually the inside was delicious - but I'm not a big white chocolate fan and it was coated in white chocolate so I'm perhaps not the best test audience. Suggestion for Bar Ape: maybe write down which bars are coated in which type of chocolate. (i.e. no matter how delicious the inside, I'm not going to order a white chocolate coated bar, versus the fact that I would have gone out of my way to order a bar coated in dark chocolate.) I also tried a bite of a friend's pistachio bar and I have to say that hers won out of the bunch for MOST DELICIOUS option. Seriously, wow! Delicious soft serve gelato, served as a twist of 2 seasonal flavours in a cup. Like gelato but softer and creamier. I had the Ontario Pear & pumpkin spice- such a unique combination. My husband has been raving about Bar Ape for a couple of summers now. He used to chase them around the city, and get disappointed when he missed them. He was ecstatic when he discovered a coffee shop near his work stocks some of the bars, and he would go on and on about how he and his co-workers now get the gelato bars regularly. They even convinced their company to book the truck for a work event. He brought me back bars a couple times (lemon and coconut & almond), but frankly, I wasn't impressed. I recently discovered Bar Ape has a store at Bathurst and St. Clair. Knowing my spouse's love for Bar Ape, I excitedly informed him of this and suggested we go. "What's the point?", he said. "I can get their gelato bars anytime near work. And you don't even like Bar Ape." "Maybe the store has things other than gelato bars?", I said. "I know you love them, so I'm willing to give them another shot." And boy was I happy I did! The shop is the cutest little walk-up. The service was super friendly. And the gelato - my God, the gelato. So, so good. My husband had the gooseberry and natural yogurt soft-serve which was tart, but not too tart. I had the chocolate hazelnut bar which was simply divine. And then I couldn't resist and also had a creamsicle, which tasted just like you think a creamsicle should but even better. I don't usually like places that are cash only, but I'll make an exception for Bar Ape, because that gelato is worth it. Plus, $5 is a nice even number, and tax is included in the price. It is a drive across town for us, but I can honestly say that I will be back again and again to try all the different flavours (did I hear chocolate mint?!). There seems to be plenty of street parking on Rushton which is a bonus. Oh, and talking to the guy at the counter, we discovered that the place my husband and his co-workers get the Bar Ape gelato bars from only carries the dairy-free flavours.
