Another one people raved about for using bronte pistachio. Got the pistachio and the tayberry vanilla bars. Both tasted good. The pistachio inside was all natural and balanced with a sweeter outer vanillic pistachio coating that might have used some coloring. It's one of the only non-grocery store pistachio ice cream/gelato bar I have seen. The other is from Stock TC. In addition to pistachio pints, they make pistachio and white chocolate gelato bars, which I prefer, TBH, because I really taste the pistachio and like the delicate texture. Location/Service Along St. Clair, by a side street. There is street parking available - and a McDonald's nearby. If you're buying it to go, then a quick stop would be fine. No indoor seating - there are limited outdoor benches. But it's ice-cream/frozen yogurt, you can eat it while standing or walking! Tip - cash only, as their debit/credit machine is broken forever. Menu is also clearly visible with what's available for the day including any limited/special flavors. Food I tried the Pistachio Gelato bar (~$5). Huge fan of pistachio - and the bar did not disappoint! Rich in flavor with real pistachio nuts. Creamy and also not overly sweet or having that fake, artificial flavoring to it. A little sad that the bar is too small as I devoured it within 5 minutes. Also tried their soft serve (~$5), a mix of gooseberry and lime. Both very distinctive flavors - each very strong in their taste. Especially the lime, it was sour - but it balances well when you mix it with the gooseberry. Oh boy. This little gem is way too close to my place. Stopped by on a long walk with the fiancé (we were supposed to be working on our fitness lol) and discovered gelato heaven. We opted for the passionfruit + guava twist and a coconut almond bar. So so so good. The flavours were delicious and the mouth feel of the gelato was oh so smooth. Best gelato I've ever had. Been here twice. First visit i had the gooseberry twist (forgot the second flavor) & it was more on the yogurty and tangy side which i was not the biggest fan of. It was still good and definitely tasted healthier but luckily i walked by bar ape again after a dinner around the area & gave it a second shot! Located just north of St Clair on Rushton, Bar Ape is definitely one of my favourite places for gelato in the city mainly due to the exquisite creative flavour combinations that they come up with and how wonderfully they execute all their flavours. They have both gelato bars and soft serve gelato for $5 each. My favourite bar would have to be the Lavender Yogurt (one of their limited featured flavours). The lavender has a penetrating floral flavour and is extremely aromatic. It pairs well with the yogurt coating which tones down the spicy floral notes with some creamy smoothness. I particularly liked that the lavender aftertaste stays with you long after you've finished eating the bar. The Chocolate Hazelnut and the Pistachio flavours are ones that are on their regular menu. Again, both flavours are on point and extremely authentic - the essence of the nuts really comes through in both bars. The pistachio gelato is smooth and creamy and the outer coating also has small bits of pistachio nuts incorporated into the shell. The Chocolate Hazelnut has an extremely aromatic hazelnut gelato center which is well complimented by a dark chocolate coating with hazelnut bits. I usually like to stock up on some of the gelato bars and take them home with me since I'm not in the area as often. While I'm there, I usually like to get the soft serve and eat it on the benches in front of the store. The soft serve comes in a variety of interesting flavours and varies from day to day. For those who are vegan, they also periodically come out with vegan flavours so again, it's best to follow them on instagram so you know when to drop by. Whichever one you choose to get (bar or soft serve), you will not be disappointed. Bar Ape is open for part of the year - usually around May to the end of September. And they're always changing up their flavours. I really love the idea of this place, a quick grab-and-go ice cream bar with some really creative flavours, and everything priced pretty well at $5. I looked at the soft serve flavours, I think it was ginger and something else and it didn't really appeal to me so I went with a coconut almond ice cream bar. The shell was almond flavour, I didn't think the almond shell was sweet enough for my taste, and I know some people might appreciate that with the over-saturation of sugar in most desserts nowadays. It literally tasted like almond milk, again, I think some might really enjoy it but I was hoping for a bit of sweetness. Luckily, I got that from the ice cream, which was perfectly creamy but light at the same time. Again, I was hoping for a bit more of a pronounced coconut flavour but that could just be me being so accustomed to artificial flavours and sweeteners. Definitely not a bad thing, but those who love brightly coloured, sickly sweet treats might not appreciate the subtle flavours and sweetness of these ice cream bars I can't wait to go back and try the soft serve and the raspberry bar!! I'm sad that my first time trying this is at the end of the summer, as I hear they close up shop once the season ends. read more

I've only tried their gooseberry/plain soft serve twist and I loved how tart the gooseberry part was! The plain didn't taste like anything but I think that was the point. Honestly one of the best sundaes in Toronto. They've earned my 5 stars once again and I'll keep this update short and sweet with just 2 things ... 1 - you can never go wrong here with any sundae sauces that collaborated with Roselle or Kitten and Bear. You've got one of the best balanced and flavourful vanilla gelato soft serve with some of the most amazing sauces. I got the Roselle Blood Orange and wow!! It was like one of their fruit caramels boiled into a sauce and drizzled onto Bar Ape gelato. It was buttery but full flavoured of sweet light citrus. It was sweet but balanced to keep the fruit flavour shining through. 2 - best compliment I can ever give in a review ... the honest truth from a 7 year old. This is a direct quote " These families on Rushton St are so lucky cause they live so close to this ice cream. If I lived here, I would visit every day. ( I then laughed) No really I mean it ... I go at least once a week because their flavours change weekly and sometimes there's small batches of flavours I've never heard of like lulo, so obviously you gotta make another trip. Then other times, they'll decide to change it up every day for the last two weeks before they close for the season, meaning there's only one option - go everyday. There's two flavours for their soft serve every week and you have the option of choosing one or a twist and let me tell you this, they make those two flavours together for a reason. They pair perfectly together. Like here's a fruity flavour that could be too tart/sweet/whatever on it's own but hold up, let's add a creamy/nutty/whatever flavour to go with and create a magical delicious baby. Of course, they're only human so sometimes there's flavours that I'm not a fan of like truffles and rhubarb (which reminds me of gasoline) BUT THIS IS VERY RARE. There's also sundaes which is vanilla soft serve and a list of sauces you can choose from like papaya, strawberry rhubarb, red plum & rose. Personally, I've only gotten the sundae once because I think their bars and soft serves are better. As for their gelato bars, there's obviously the featured bar but they also have a list of what I would consider permanent flavours such as raspberry, creamsicle, hazelnut, and pistachio (I love all of these). Whenever I go, I always get the twist and featured bar to start. In no way does this mean their permanent bars aren't good but if I don't get the featured bar, I might never know if it's my new favourite. Serious case of FOMO I guess. I would say if you eat one and feel the need to get more but think it might be too ridiculous, FEEL NO SHAME AND DO IT. Listen, Bar Ape is only opened for less than half a year, you're just making up for the winter period when you can't get your Bar Ape fix. I take tubs and bars so I can stock up. Even though I come religiously, I wasn't sure how to review this place because I felt like I wasn't as amazed and excited about it anymore and it was just a routine for me to go. AHAHAHAHAHA SILLY ME. So during the winter months, they will have special orders for their bars or tubs and sometimes they'll add in items not offered at their store like ice cream cakes, sconti bags (bag of bars) and cornettos. LET ME TELL YOU THIS, IF YOU EVER SEE CORNETTOS, DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR AND JUST GET IT. I was literally double fisting, strawberry chocolate in one hand and hazelnut chocolate in the other. SO GOOD. Not even strawberry season and it tastes just like fresh strawberry puree with a strawberry chocolate casing (also delicious) in a chocolate coated waffle cone. The other was a rich hazelnut gelato in a dark chocolate casing and either the gelato or the chocolate had bits of nuts in it, all on top of a chocolate coated waffle cone. As I was eating this, I was saying how I don't know how I ever doubted Bar Ape. They deserve so much better like I don't even deserve them. I actually screwed up because the cornettos ended up selling out real fast and when they restocked, they added another flavour (salted caramel banana twist) which I didn't realize and didn't place another order. I'll just have to live with missing out on it my whole life and this doesn't even include the walk-in special they offered during pick up on the first day - lime & passion fruit and coconut & toasted almond. They have had so many flavours so I'll just list some of the featured flavours I loved: blood orange, chocolate malt, fresh mint, fig balsamic, walnut and black tea, gooseberry and natural yogurt, blueberry, banana and sunflower, grape, pumpkin seed, lemon sage yogurt, passionfruit and soursop, lulo, peach cinnamon, plum and chamomile. Visited this tiny neighbourhood cafe for the first time this past summer and had the blueberry and Italian custard swirl. I'm usually not a fan of fruit in dairy-based desserts but this blueberry gelato was heavenly We went on a weekday after dinner and it even though the line was quite long, the service was quick and the guy behind the counter was kept busy the entire time. When their post shows up on my feed, I am too far to get it. Now they have a shop, a stable address, so I don't have to chase them around town anymore! Like many of the other popular ice cream/gelato/frozen treats shops around Toronto, Bar Ape is tucked inside a smaller street off of a main street, but I mean, you'll see the queue and commotion, which will immediately trigger you to walk over to see what's going on. Bar Ape is famous for their gelato bars. Nicely packaged and ready to eat. Which of course you'd be able to get at the shop. The shop also offers "soft serve" gelato/sorbet. The Bar Ape bars are stuffed with amazingness. I've seen people eating and loving the sundaes, but I only go for the bars. While they always have their typical daily bars (I love the Chocolate and Hazelnut), they also have a "Bar of the Day", which is usually unusual and incredible. In love! Hooked me with the Niagara Peach Ana Cinnamon twist - now a devotee of just about everything on their inventive menu. Love that they are constantly mixing it up - I now watch the insta feed to see what amazing combos are on tap each week. Bars are killer - have tried a bunch of the flavours and they never disappoint. The brown sugar vanilla pint was a huge hit - we took it home we just couldn't get enough! Next will try the sundaes they looked fantastic. Also love the vibe around the counter window - but evenings can get really crazy with lines. We went right after dinner and the line was pretty short. Since discovering this 'not-so-secret' ice cream gem, we've been going weekly for the rotating menu. The ingredients are always fresh and local. Lots of Ontario fruits - think plums, gooseberries, blueberries. It almost taste like they picked it and made it into ice cream right away! There's always a non-dairy version of soft serve or gelato bar along side the many options. Staffs are always friendly despite the lengthy line up in the evenings. It's better to go on the weekend day. Pro-tip: if you are interested in eating both the soft serve and the gelato bar, you can always take the bar home! Such a cute little outside shop. The staff are extremely friendly and they have absolutely amazing ice cream! They change their flavours constantly which keeps things interesting. There is a nice selection of flavours and they take the extra effort to cater towards lactose intolerant customers, which is very considerate of them. The pumpkin seed twist with pear in particular used local ingredients, which I appreciated as I support local products. The flavour itself was delectable and it had a nutty taste as well. The icecream is so aesthetic! I got the lime sorbet and it was good but after a bit it just got a bit too sour. I wish here were more flavours at once instead of switching flavours every week. The gelato soft serves are $5 and so are the gelato bars and sundaes. The pints are $10.
