Banville optical has the finest eyewear in the the Commonwealth. The options at the wholesale sites are not even close ti the the high quality glasses at Banville The staff who have been there for years really know the business and things were a pleasure. Unfortunately, a couple of years ago, the was a policeman perhaps moonlighting a second job. I've seen him about town and he was insistent that I had ordered a pair of glasses only Harry Truman would wear. The moonlighting fellow placed a pair glasses with a line bifocal. I didn't order those ; his tone was harsh and I was uncomfortable. Policemen who need part time income should try to fix cars or lawnmowers Many have terrific manual skills . The are great at helping folks who are stuck. My next visit was just a awkward. The lady waiting on me said she had 43 pairs of glasses . She proceeded to show me all her inventory on layaway . In the city of witches she would scare all the boys and ghouls. However, she did own a beautiful car. I just saw one exactly like it. With the problems I have, I cannot wait for a meter. Parking is tight and restricted. I will always remember the first rate eyewear I would religiously purchase at Banville . The owner is kind and nice. The fellow working the shop if friendly and skillful. James Dennehy read more

I've been a customer at Banville Optical in Salem, MA for several years. I've been happy with the optometrist who works out of that location, Dr Sunny Yoon. She appears to be experienced and thorough; at my most recent visit last week she recommended I also see an opthamologist, to follow a condition she saw with my corneas, and suggested several in the general "north of Boston" area. If you need new frames, you have plenty to choose from, as their glasses selection is extensive. YMMV, but I'm quite happy with this place & the people there. (Oh, and they're also just happen to be located right next to my favorite Salem hardware store, Winer Brothers!) read more

I have been buying my glasses and sunglasses at Banville for almost 15 years. Selection is excellent, service is superb. You can also purchase vintage frames there as well. If you haven't tried them yet- get on over. You won't be disappointed. read more

I do not recommend this optometrist. I was a patient for 30 years. Never in that 30 years was Dr Yoon on time. Figuring she was busy, I started scheduling the first appointment of the day. Nope. She was still at least 30 minutes late. This was to every single appointment in 30 years. Not once on time. And late by at least 30 minutes. But the absolute worst, almost unforgivable was she completely changed my eye prescription. After an exam, she stated and wrote that my left eye somehow went to having no vision problems. I have astigmatism in that eye. There is no way that could happen. I'm 56 years old. They filled my contacts with that prescription and when I put them in, I got really sick due to having basically nothing in my left eye. I still wanted to give dr yoon benefit of the doubt, I mean she is the doctor, so I tried to walk to my car to drive. Well, I was so dizzy I fell down on the cement. At that point, I knew I couldn't drive and I looked at my contact boxes and realized she had made a mistake. I walked to Banville wearing my old glasses, and they argued with me. They told me I was wrong. They literally acted like I was crazy. They finally decided to give me my contacts in my old script and expected me to pay for them. Then I had glasses made, thinking they would use my old prescription. Nope. Again. The left eye was basically just plain glass. I decided to go to another optometrist for a new eye exam. As I suspected, Dr Yoon somehow completely messed up my exam and Banville was pushing a fake, very incorrect eye prescription. I went to get my new glasses fixed from Banville because I figured they should replace the lens for free. They replaced it, but reluctantly. This was the craziest experience I've ever had. After 30 years of waiting for Dr Yoon to show up for every appointment, now I'm literally arguing over an incorrect prescription- not even a slight error- an error that could have killed me or another person if I had driven. They never even apologized. Instead they treated me like I was crazy. One good thing- I found a new optometrist that has brand new, state of the art equipment that actually works and gives customers the correct prescription. And he was on time!! read more

The person answering the phone was unhelpful, lacked knowledge and dismissive of the urgency of the specific needs of the patient. I do not recommend this practice. They lack knowledge and ability in working with simple needs of customers. Find a different doctor. read more

Very nice people. did their best to help me with eyewear. Unfortunately, without my approval, an attendant decided to raise the height of the lower part of these bifocal glasses. The result is disastrous- far too high and impedes the distant vision lens. I paid quite a lot of money and walked out very dissatisfied. I gave them one star because my eyesight isn't something to be around with. Now I know. read more

Truly a horrible experience. Their current staff just lies about everything. They said they didn't have frames in the price range covered by my insurance. Then the owner said this wasn't true. I signed up for a pair of contacts with purchase of glasses but didn't get them. They added services outside my insurance during the exam and charged me without any prior notice. If I could put it into one word it would be "liars" read more

Helpful staff and the doctor is thoughtful. They have a large selection of both low cost and high-end eyewear. A very comfortable place for all ages. read more

Found what I needed at America's Best for much cheaper. Better service at America's Best too. I should have read the review about the owner Richard being rude to children and employees. That is completely unacceptable and I will not support this business. read more

Very frustrated. Without my permission a clerk realigned the prism on each lens. Now, my $500 plus glasses are useless to me. Cannot recommend. read more

The other day, I had my eyes checked by the excellent optometrist Sunny Yoon, whose office is in Banville Optical in Salem, MA. Initially, I had planned to purchase frames at Warby Parker. What was I thinking?! Why on earth would I support a corporate chain when small businesses all over the country wither on the vine? But back to Banville. I had such a good time there! Vicky nailed the perfect frames three pairs in. Who knew any frame could be purchased with a magnetic sunglass "clip-on?" I didn't. I love that! Banville works to give you the best price, be it with insurance or other discounts. I selected a second pair from their low-price/high-style budget line of frames. There's a reason why Banville has been in business for 47 years - excellent service, fashion frames, and competitive prices. The next time you need to upgrade your glasses, visit Sunny Yoon and Banville Optical. And remember to shop local! read more

Been a customer of this location for 40+ years and must share that the customer service is top notch. They appreciate their customers. It's very difficult for small, local businesses to compete with all the online discount outlets and big box stores. Banville Optical does their very best to take care of their customers. There is something to be said for paying a little more not only to support a local business but to appreciate that they ACTUALLY KNOW WHO YOU ARE AND CARE WHO YOU ARE. Please support your small local businesses. Banville, thanks very much. Folks, its worth it, buy local and support your small businesses. read more

My eye glasses broke, I need them because they are an important thing in my life because I am blind ahah, but Baneville Optical is an AMAZING place to go to, I went in there for my yearly checkup and to get some glasses.. and let me tell ya, the guy working was amazing!!! Super nice and super helpful with what kind of eye glasses I wanted, and on top of that they have extremely good prices! If you ever need your eyes done go here, such amazing staff and prices. read more

Dependable with competitive prices. No high pressure to buy expensive frames or lenses.

Was on vacation with girlfriends and my contact tore. They got me a replacement lense within an hour! Great customer service!

I used to go to LensCrafters but wanted to go somewhere more local, so I tried Banville Optical in 5/17. Got my eye exam and bought a pair of glasses. Within 2 months both lenses needed to be replaced because they were cracking. They were replaced with no problem. I'd like to point out that I have glasses in a desk drawer that are over 10 yrs old that never cracked, frames are fine and I could use in a pinch, but are older prescriptions. Just over a year later more cracks started to appear and pieces of both arms of the frames were falling off. After much arguing with the staff they replaced my pair of glasses for a small fee. A few months later cracks started appearing in the new glasses. I just rode it out for a while because I didn't want another confrontation with the staff. Well today I went in and asked for a copy of my prescription. The staff notices the multiple cracks. I said "right, and these are the ones you replaced because the previous ones had multiple cracks. I left and went to a chain and paid out-of-pocket to get new lenses. I'll never go back to Banville Optical, nor will I recommend it to anyone. read more

Not much to say here other than overpriced and rude service. First visit was ok. Doc seemed more annoyed to be there than anything else. Walked out with a bill for over $1200 for a pair of glasses and sunglasses. Not Maui Jim or Ray Ban. Off brand stuff. No special prescription. I can pass the eye exam at the DMV without my glasses. Two years pass and I came back in to get a new pair of glasses. My current prescription isn't giving me any issues. Can still see fine. I wanted to wait a bit to get an exam but was forced to get an exam and make an appt. 2 weeks later and I had to cancel the appt due to a back injury. The woman on the phone canceled it and asked if I wanted to reschedule and when I said not at this time she just said "bye" and hung up. Hmm, alright then. I also had a pair of glasses picked out and when I checked the online price they were $200 less than they are on the rack at Banville. No thank you. Bye read more

Great service and friendly staff. Love my new glasses. The wait time was less than a week.

Customer service is great. Dr. Yoon is very knowledgable and has the needed technology for my needs. I don't have to have my eyes dilated because she has the equipment to replace that. I have always had a great experience during my visits. Personnel are pleasant regardless of whether they are directly attending you or not. I also love that they are open on Saturdays, I don't have to go in late to work or ask to leave early to go to my appts. In terms of pricing, I use day and night, which are expensive everywhere :( apparently. The only thing I would recommend is, a little change in the store, in the sense of decor. ;) read more

My son broke his glasses the week before a holiday and right before he was leaving on a trip out of the state. I was panicked because his prescription had expired and I would have to get him to see an eye doctor and get a new prescription, not just new glasses, and I would need a place that didn't send glasses out to be completed because they wouldn't be done in time! I contacted Banville online since it was later in the day and they were closed and I didn't want to waste any time. They called me back the first thing the next morning and got us an appointment as soon as they could. When we arrived, we were greeted right away and were shown a few pairs of glasses while the last appointment was finishing up. The man we worked with listened to my son carefully and found a few pairs that were his style and fit his needs. He put the pair that he picked aside and my son went in for his appointment. Dr. Yoon was courteous (and quick!) and great with my son. He came out and was fitted by another man who assured us his glasses would be done within an hour (- wow! -) and said we were welcome to stay and wait or come back. We had to run a quick errand and were back before the hour was through, but his glasses were already finished! My son's glasses fit him perfectly and we were reminded that we could come back any time if he had any problems with them or even just needed them readjusted. To be perfectly honest, we spent more than I was used to because I am used to going to chain stores for cheap glasses for children (which is why my son's glasses had broken so easily in the first place, most probably), but now I couldn't imagine going anywhere else. The staff was all very friendly and helpful and the customer service was the best I've ever had from the person answering the phones, to the doctor... everyone! I will absolutely be back and would highly recommend Banville to anyone! read more

Have been going to Banville Optical for 35 years and for as long as Dr Yoon has been there for eye and contact exams. Bob, out front, has been beyond helpful and great with all our needs over the years. My son has also been going there since kindergarten, now 11. Very comfortable with the staff as that piece is always hard for him. Over the last 2 years, I have spoken with Dr Yoon about transitioning him to contacts. I called today to make that appt knowing he was turning 11 and is more responsible and I spoke to the receptionist who informed me that my son, (as an established eyeglass patient of both Dr Yoon and front office) would not be able to be seen for with the contact aspect after Dr. Yoon would do her exam because they are short staffed. What difference does it matter if you are fitting him / seeing him for eyeglasses or contacts. We are still patients. Now they're being selective about which services they want to give you? What kind of full service eye practice is this? VERY DISAPPOINTED AFTER THE AMOUNT OF BUSINESS WE HAVE GIVEN THEM FOR 35+ years, new owner or not. read more

I never post reviews, but this place deserves the recognition. When I first got to the store to pick out my new glasses, I was greeted right away by everyone working there. They asked me what kind of glasses I had in mind and helped me gather up some options. They ended up not having exactly what I wanted in store, and they were kind enough to place a special order for my frames! Once the frames arrived, they even sent me pictures to double-check that I was pleased with them. All in all it was a great, pain-free experience. Thank you Banville Optical!! read more

Service was okay initially. Now that I've moved I'm having a hard time getting them to transfer my medical records, specifically the Optomap imagery for which you pay extra out of pocket. They don't have the tech savvy to give me an electronic copy, or email it somewhere, and are pushing back on fixing that. UPDATE - Rich the owner hopped on this quick and got me my records. Thanks Rich! read more

I am dwindling between 1 and 2 stars. Customer service is ok. This has been my eye doctor for years. I have always been happy and the prices were reasonable. Dr. Yoon is very nice and gets the job done. However, the eyeglass and contact prices have recently gone through the roof!!! I wear bi weekly lenses that I can get through Walgreens or 1-800 CONTACTS for about 26.00 per box. At Banville they are now 36.00 per box for the same exact thing!!! I'll go with Bj's, Walgreens or someone else to re order from now on. Service there has gone down hill and there is a younger girl working there now who is really rude. Too expensive! I will go elsewhere! read more

The salesgirl here was really helpful and helped me to pick out a cute new pair of frames. They had a large selection of frames that were covered by my insurance, so my out of pocket expense was low. I haven't picked up my glasses yet, but so far my experience was good and I would go back there again. read more

Three stars? you got to be kidding. This place has the nicest people, great prices and really good service, what more can you ask for? They also know how to give you a real exam which the cheap ones can't do very well. Bottom line, you get what you pay for. read more

I've never felt compelled to leave a Yelp review, but the customer service was so outstanding that I had to give them a shout out! I needed a new pair of glasses and dropped in on a Saturday. They served me right away and had my lenses in stock. I fell in love with frames that were out of my price range. They helped me search for a similar shape for a cheaper price but could tell I was a bit heartbroken. The boss gave me a discount for the expensive frames and they were ready within 45 minutes! Every person I dealt with was so positive and professional and fun. I cannot recommend them enough and they now have a customer for life read more

I'm glad I found this place. My previous experiences buying eyeglasses have not been great. I used to go to a chain store ( I felt like I was buying glasses at Home Depot...so impersonal) Then I wasted too much money buying glasses online ( you get what you pay for) I took a coworkers advise and went to Banville. The selection was huge and the staff was friendly and knowledgeable, they helped me pick out frames and suggested the right lens material. As for cost, it was so much less than going to the mall. I returned last week and was just as impressed picking out sunglasses read more

Was out of town from Chicago in Salem when my glasses loosened to the point of breaking; another optical place closer to where I was when the glasses choked said nothing could be done; was about to apply scotch tape when, on a relative's advice, I checked with Banville--terrific response. They replaced the side piece in about 5 min and this was just about at closing time; thank you--Banville would be my optometry office if I lived in town. read more

Just got back from this place. I needed an exam, new glasses and a box of new contact lenses. The eye doctor was nice and worked efficiently, but after the exam I told her I wasn't sure if I would buy my glasses there and asked if I could get my PD (distance between the pupils). One of the options I'm considering is an online store, which asks for that measurement. She told me they would do that out front. After looking at their selection for some time and finding a few frames I liked but wanting to explore these other options first I tried to order my box of contacts and ask for the PD. They refused to give it to me flat out, not even for a fee, not even unofficially. The manager was curt about it as well and said only the person who makes your glasses should take that measurement. Baloney. I've read online that many places will do this, and that some will charge a small fee. It's a simple measurement. Clearly he was just angry because he realized I might not buy my frames from him. Well, his shop was still in the running for my business before he was rude about the PD. As I told him, now I'm never coming back, not for frames, not for contacts, and not even for an eye exam. So instead of making a *possible* customer happy you've just lost one entirely. I thought I'd let you know. read more

Had my eye exam there and then months later had to go back for an eye infection. Both times the staff was very friendly and courteous. Everyone was very knowledgeable and if by chance they didn't have an answer they sought it out. Dr. Yoon is efficient and friendly enough, but definitely all business. The prices for glasses are definitely higher than most other places, but they are a small mom and pop business as opposed to a chain, so that is to be expected. I had an issue with one of my contacts...it was defective right out of the package. They quickly reordered me one to replace it. Will definitely be using them again. read more
