When you work in a school, going out for lunch is rarely -- if ever -- a possibility. It also means a lot of mornings dashing out of the house at the last minute with your toast in your teeth, your coat half on, and your neatly packed lunch still in the fridge. So you learn to cultivate relationships with restaurants that will deliver, and my coworkers and I have mastered this art. Bambu is one of our favorite places to order for a number of reasons: 1) Delivery only takes about 30 minutes. When you have a limited window in which to eat, this is crucial. 2) It's "pan-Asian" which is usually a restaurant's undoing. But with a motley crew of coworkers all sporting different tastes, it's nice to have a bit of variety, from Americanized Chinese to Japanese and Thai. 3) $10 bento boxes at lunch are a really great deal for the amount of food you get: an entrée; rice (brown or white); mixed green salad with ginger dressing; wonton, sweet 'n' sour, or miso soup; and a California roll. I like the miso soup, sesame tofu, broiled eel, and sashimi. Coworkers like the beef with broccoli, chicken and Thai yellow curry, and sashimi/sushi, too. 4) The ingredients are good quality. Surprisingly, the sushi fish is decent and the rice done nicely, for an Asian delivery joint. Even the (crabstick, but still tasty) California rolls. Definitely a delivery lunch winner. read more

Welcome and wonderful surprise.. Chinese, Thai, and Japanese food all well made in a nice small asian oasis near Georgetown. We had the steamed shumai which was very nice and tasty thank you very much. Also the sushi was fresh, although not the most spectacular it was very tasty. And the Tom Yum Gai (thai shrimp sourp with mushrooms) was delicious. The Ginger Chicken was good too. Wine list is good, and the happy hour from 4-6pm provides discount sushi and wine.. whats wrong with that? If there is a downside to this place, I didnt see it. I decided to give this place another chance because the food really is good and with the exception to my first experience the place does look clean. I haven't seen the other guy recently, and there seems to be some new staff and a few of them are pretty friendly. The restaurant also updated their specials, so I will have to try the new selections. Saki is still a bit expensive by the bottle, but the place is making some good changes. Updated 7/22/2016 They have a new worker who is rude as anything, and she tries to defend the owners inflated prices on his drinks. I am done with this place. Received their menu right in my mail box and decided to give a birthday treat to a friend at the restaurant. We were both disappointed with what we ordered. The Thai Chicken Satay was rather dry and over-cooked. The Larb Gai had little flavor. The chili and garlic sauce for the Sea Bass was rather greasy. Only the Panang Curry Beef was okay. The restaurant was rather stingy with the rice so we had to ask for two extra orders! The dishes, I feel, were over-priced for what we were getting. Their Japanese is yummy (particularly the sushi), but they haven't quite mastered the cuisine of the neighboring countries. The noodle soups are good, but have an uncanny resemblance to pho - for 5 dollar more and without all the tasty veggy/sauce additions. Their Thai is, in a word - terrible. Drunken noodles (or pad kee mao) comes our runny and tastes of too much fish oil and watered down golden mountain sauce. I'm critical of American Thai food, as it rarely compares to the amazing flavors you find in Thailand, but this place is inexcusably bad (even for Americanized Thai). Yes, even worse than Tara Thai. All venting aside, it's still a pretty cute little place to get sushi in a less populated area of D.C., which is always a plus. read more

Historically, the food has been good at Bambu and that has continued. However, the service at our latest visit was chaotic. We waited fifteen minutes before we were initially approached. Various wait staff would go for another round or re-fills and disappear. Although we had a reservation, after we finally ordered drinks the manager announced that we had to move our table to accommodate a bigger party. That would have been fine, had it been done professionally. However, the manager came over and just started moving our things (they needed two tables together.) Even the party apologized. The manager did not buy a drink or offer a desert - nothing. Just move. And we too had a reservation. Just very bad form for a restaurant. In short, it's not particularly inexpensive for a group and the the present service is disorganized and inconsistent. That undercuts the experience. read more

Bambu is my go-to for Asian foods of all kinds. It's not exactly a fancy night out kind of place, but my boyfriend and I frequent Bambu for a casual dinner and also take out (they even deliver!). Their menu includes a great selection of sushi, nigiri, soups/salads, Thai, Chinese, and noodle dishes. Their sushi is always fresh, consistent, and very tasty! Plus, it's a great value. I recommend the 'Hot Mama' roll- spicy tuna with fresh jalapeno in it. My absolute favorite Thai noodle dish in the world (and I actually don't really like Thai food) is Pad Se Eu from Bambu. I don't know how I randomly decided to order it one evening, but now I am Pad Se Eu regular and highly recommend you try it (I get it with Chicken most of the time, but the pork and beef are also both great). The service is always quick and the staff is very friendly. If you haven't tried Bambu and you're thinking about it... do it! read more

We Ordered *Seafood Delight- scallop is over cooked seafood itself is NOT FRESH *String beans Pork Bento- its so greasy. Salad is not chop its like they only threw so in my plate out of the packet. California roll the avocado is turning brown its suppose to be green *fried rice is okay And I don't like how the server kept rushing US and not being friendly, she don't know how to say "EXCUSE ME" when she's passing out the food and saying "Thank you" and charge us for a $10.95 tip. I remember coming here when I was younger for a friend's 13th birthday. Today I was tasked with selecting a place to eat at, and I decided to look through my Yelp bookmarks. I figured I'd hit up this restaurant again, 5 years later after my first encounter. It was near my house which helped. The service was OK. The waiter was neutral, not particularly memorable but not a jerk either. Our food came quickly, which was probably in part to the low amount of customers there (It seems that most restaurants around the Palisades area tend to be quiet 24/7). I got the miso soup and the Rainbow roll, an intricate set of what seem to be California rolls (or similar) wrapped with fish (salmon, tuna, and yellowtail) and thin slices of avocado. To finish it off, I had some green tea ice cream (unfortunately it is traditional ice cream and not the cute, hockey-puck-like mochi ice cream) and hot green tea. We ate here today and had rude wait staff... who never checked up on us, but what really got me upset enough to right a review on yelp was that when we had received the bill We had noticed the price was a little bit higher then should be we looked over the receipt and had noticed that she had tipped her self out $17. The service we received definitely did NOT deserve $17 in my opinion, And the fact that the waitress decided to give herself her own tip just amazes me. UGH. sorry. we live down the block and this would usually be our "go to" spot if we were in the mood (very easy walk). this place has always been a toss up between 3 stars and 0 stars. well, the odds have finally weighed in the favor of 0. i am from the beach and the sushi there is what i judge all others by. cultured pearl is the standard. the "stuff" we got monday .... i had the lobster and shrimp roll. the shrimp couldn't be more dehydrated if it were left on the counter under a heat lamp for days. the "lobster" that was stuffed inside the roll had the texture of some fake fish mousse (turns out it was some sort of lobster salad that was 98% mayo and 2% fake lobster). i have never liked the sushi there. they seem to have recently tried to make it better but each time we would go, my girlfriend would order a roll or two. i would warn her that i would not partake as to not have her order too much and waste it. this night just went over the edge on yuck. i ended up ill that night and the next day. i have decided to name this "bam-barf" instead of bambu and it will need to be a cold day in hell before i eat there again. the other "non sushi" food items are fine. the service last monday did sort of blow. we had to wave down our waitress for 5 -6 minutes who was chatting it up with some .... dude at the bar. i ended up taking my card to her. read more

Love Bambu's pad see ew and Thai soup with shrimp. They deliver to my apartment for orders over $20 and they're usually pretty quick about it. The pad see ew has delightful fermented black beans, which is one of my favorite condiments. It also comes with large pieces of broccoli and it's the best with tofu, in my opinion. The tofu is of the "fried" variety, but it's not greasy. read more

They also have some pretty excellent dumplings and fried rice. Parking can suck sometimes around here- there is a small lot out front but it fills up quickly when things are busy. The service is good but occasionally I have gotten a waiter whose command of english is not excellent. But that really doesn't matter, you're not there to eat the waiter. read more

I've lived near Bambu for about two years, and between this and Chen's Gourmet, they have me covered for all of my take out needs. Is Bambu the kind of place I would drag my friends out to the Palisades to try? No, probably not. But for takeout in under 20 minutes, I can't complain. I've had the sushi and thai and have never been disappointed. The panag curry has been my go to more recently. No, it probably isn't super authentic, but it definitely hits the spot. The once time I ate in the restaurant, I had a pleasant experience overall. Their lunch boxes are a good deal. If you find yourself in the area looking for some decent food, give Bambu a shot. They've been a reliable source for week-night take out for a number of years, and for that, I love them. read more

Kotobuki was closed so we headed up the road for a late lunch. It was a bit disappointing. The place looks pretty nice and is fairly large with attractive wooden chairs and padded benches. The miso soup was really good, but the sushi was nothing special. The nigiri sushi was more rice than fish. The rice itself was a problem. It was a little dry and hard. The spicy tuna roll wasn't made with spicy tuna, just a regular tuna roll with spicy mayonnaise. All in all the selection of special rolls was quite limited and not very interesting. We had mango sticky rice to finish things off. It was pretty tasty, though too small a portion and sloppily plated. The menu has quite a bit of non-sushi items including Chinese fare like Peking Duck. The service was pretty slow but we did go at an unusual time in the late afternoon. Came here for dinner with a friend on Saturday night, and loved it. Surprisingly, the place wasn't as busy as I thought it would be, or deserved to be. Service was attentive but not intrusive, the place was bright and clean, and most importantly, the food was great. I had the Singaporean noodles with curry. I often had this dish while growing up in Hong Kong, but have never been able to find a competent replica here in the States until I had it here at Bambu. My friend had the Thai fried rice and he really liked it too (he lives in this neighborhood and told me that he's always looking for an excuse to come eat at Bambu, so he's already a fan). I should note that the portions were VERY generous -- could easily be two dinners for me (and I'm not a shy eater) and for my friend. Prices - as you can see from the menu - are also very reasonable. This is not gourmet / destination dining by any stretch, but definitely a great choice for a hearty and satisfying meal. I will be coming back again. read more

I went to Bambu for a quick lunch break with some of my girlfriends. We all decided to order the Bento Box, which includes your choice of soup, a salad, rice, 4 pieces of sushi, and an entree. All this food for only 11ish (I don't remember the EXACT price) dollars!! I decide to go with the Sesame Chicken and got a green tea to go along with it. I had to wait quite some time for the green tea... And we were one of the only ones in the restaurant! They finally brought my green tea to the table along with two of the three soups. Of course, with my luck thus far, my soup was the missing one! After a good 5 minutes, although it seemed like an eternity for this hungry yelper, the soup came. I ordered the wanton soup. Not too memorable, but it was tasty. Not too long after the soups arrived, we got our monstrous Bento Boxes. My chicken was a bit on the cold side. Luckily, dining companions did not have that problem. The sushi, a California roll, wasn't bad and the salad was not too shabby either. My stomach was more than satisfied after the meal and my wallet was quite happy as well. Definitely not the best pan-Asian food in the world, but, it's satisfactory given the low price. read more

Yummm! I can't believe I've lived in the neighborhood for so long without discovering this place. And they deliver! The Japanese noodle soup with udon, spinach, and a poached egg was intensely flavorful and delicious (I'd recommend it with beef). The Thai noodle soup with wide rice noodles and cilantro came in a mild, clear broth that I had to spice up with Sriacha and soy sauce - it was okay but I'd probably try the Chinese noodle soup with lo mein or go with the Udon soup before ordering this one again. The sushi was very reasonably priced ($4-5/roll) and quite tasty. I loved how many noodle dishes they had on the menu; can't wait to come back and worth my way through all of them - I have my work cut out for me! read more

I just returned from here, and here's my experience: We arrived around 5:45 or so, and were seated immediately. We started with an order of steamed dumplings. Doughy, which is nice, but the filling left a bit to be desired. Followed that with a Spicy Tuna Maki and an Alligator Roll (eel, shrimp tempura, avocado). Both were fantastic, and met all expectations. They were enjoyed even by my family members who don't generally like sushi. For a main dish, I had the Drunken Noodles, which were not particularly spicy, and were not particularly flavorful. It wasn't bad, but I certainly have had better Drunken Noodles. The waiter was nice, if not friendly, though I did need to specifically indicate that I wanted more tea, even after turning the lid upside down. While this experience was not 5 stars, I do see a great amount of potential, and would not be adverse to returning again and trying some different items. read more

I can only speak on the Spicy Thai Rice with chicken and shrimp, because that is all I ever order, and it is all I need! It is always fresh and delicious! The chicken is good quality white meat, and the shrimp are always tender, even after I reheat them the next day. The food is ready very fast, and the service is average. I usually call in and pick up my order, and the person on the phone is always in a rush and not all that pleasant, but that doesn't bother me. read more

The food is pretty decent, not the best Chinese you'll have in DC but definitely not the worst. Service was just about what you'd expect from a mid-range restaurant. Probably my favorite Hot & Sour Soup in the area... but why no fried noodles, guys? It's hard to distinguish the quality of the food between the lunchtime boxes and the regular menu, which includes the chef's specials.
