Worst customer service ever. I pulled in for a smog, 45 minutes prior to closing per their website. A young man saw me pull in, get out of my car and said we're closed. We can't do your smog today. Even after reminding him that they're supposed to be open for another 45 minutes he told me, yeah, I have one in front of you and won't take mine. He was rude, and inconsiderate of my time. And need for a smog. I will not be going back or using any of the Balswicks service centers ever again. I'll spend my money with someone more deserving. read more

Sometimes I search for a good deal to save a buck or two but I choose Balswicks quick smog for both of our cars for other reasons. Every time, staff strikes up a conversation and are genuinely kind and wonderful people. Now everyone has bad days, but when you are created with a smile, it's a good sign you are in the right place. I took my car to get the smog inspection completed and Robert DeCouto is very professional and friendly and completed the smog check quickly. However, I cannot say the same for their receptionist who was absolutely rude and argumentative with me. My car was completed and passed. Another person showed up after me and the receptionist did not take care of me, instead checked in the man that arrived afterwards. I told her that was rude, since all she had to do was ring me up and provide me with a certificate. She in turned argued with me that I was being rude. Un-freaking believable!! It took her more time to check in the customer that arrived after me. She told me to report her to her boss and I will definitely do so. If she's not happy at this job then she should go somewhere else!! I sure am. No longer will I come here for my vehicles smog checks. Not when you have rude receptionist with an attitude!! read more

I took my work truck in around 8:15am and was greeted by a man named Luke. He was very courteous and the process was very quick. I relaxed I. The waiting room on one of the most comfortable chairs I have ever say in. I was lucky it was so early as I was the only one there at the time and there is only one of those chairs. Lol. I also treated myself to some coffee which was provided will all of the fixings. I know most of this stuff doesn't matter but hey, I was comfortable, had some good coffee, and the process was painless and speedy. Plus Luke was a very pleasant person. Overall I would recommend. Went in this morning Saturday June 6, 2020 for a smog. Told us to drive the car from 50-100 miles to reset the computer of the car because we had to charge the battery before we took it in. So we paid $65 and said the recheck would be $20. So we and left and went to drive the car. I called at 3:05 and asked the receptionist if they for sure closed at 4:00pm today, because we were bringing the car back for the recheck. She said "Yes we are here until 4:00pm." We arrived at 3:50pm and 1 of the roll up doors facing Goldenstate Blvd was already closed and the Smog Tech was sitting in the office chatting with the receptionist. There were no cars in the bay to work on. He immediately walked out and said asked how far we drove and we told him 100 miles. So he checked the car and said "Yeah the computer did reset, but I have to leave and pick up my son so I can't smog it." When we said "Don't you close at 4:00?" He said "Yeah but we are closing early since I have to leave. I already turned everything off and it takes because 30 minutes to just to power up the equipment. But you can take it to another smog shop and have it done there." Then he walked over and shut the remaining roll up door on Goldenstate. This is VERY bad for business. Sending people to other smog shops?! If you are open until 4:00, you serve customers until 3:59. I will be calling Paul on Monday morning to make sure he is aware how his employees don't care about losing customers and are telling them to go to other smog shops. I can't believe they are treating their customers this way. Who knows how many times they have done this and people have went elsewhere. read more

Overpriced & rude! $54 for a smog check (thats without the $10 "discount") Their prices are not posted anywhere inside of the business, so you don't know if the prices they are giving you are legit. I had never gone to get a smog check done before & the lady that was at the receptionist desk quoted me a crazy price, a gentleman that had been waiting for his work to get done overheard the insane amount she was charging me & asked if she was sure if that was the correct price, after that confrontation, she SUDDENLY decided to give me a $10 "discount." I paid the price. The gentleman that was outside working on my car had already taken my keys, before I had signed anything, so in fear that my car would be tampered with.. if I signed and the paid $54!!!!! Don't ever come here!!! I have to say that my fist time experience getting my car smoggy wasn't the best... DO NOT GO HERE. When I found out that I could get a smog check cheaper in modesto, I asked for them to stop the check, I was there for three, maybe four minutes and had signed the release form thirty seconds prior. They said they stopped the check and were very rude. A few hours later, I find out that they said everything in my car was tampered, including aspects that weren't even on my car! Overpriced lime another user explained. The knucklehead doing the smog put a couple of things on my smog report that basically cost me $500 more in repair and having to go to a STAR smog station to have the work done. No I'm not upset because my vehicle failed, I took it to another mechanic and he told me that this guy basically screwed me over and put items in the the notes that were unnecessary. I was told this guy has done this to others so beware, take it a mile down the road and get it done for $15 less and from a person that knows how to do their job. Receptionist not very friendly either, test took an hour also because they were trying to figure out why a company got sent an invoice when they didn't have their vehicle smoged there. I had my oil changed on my foreign luxury car at another Balswick's location in Turlock due to time constraints. After the oil change, my check engine light came on. Balswick attempted to rectify the problem three separate times but was unsuccessful. They kindly offered for me to schedule an appointment to undergo a diagnostic exam on my car. Since my car was still under manufacture's warranty, I decided to have it serviced at the luxury auto dealer instead. The dealer stated because damage was caused during the third party oil change the repair would not be covered under manufacture's warranty and I was responsible for the service charge totaling $160. I called Balswick and informed them of this event. Balswick then apologize and immediately offered me a refund check for the amount paid to my dealership. Like all businesses, when things goes great everybody is happy. However, you can always evaluate the "true" integrity of any business is how they handle any situation is when things goes wrong. In my particular case, I have to admit the customer service truly excellent on how they handled the above scenario. read more

Slightly disappointed, to say the least! My husband and I decided to take our recently purchased (used) car here to get a smog check, and the car failed. We were surprised that the car did not pass, as it had a new catalytic converter, but we were willing to accept that the car needed some sort of other repair - which was no big deal. The young woman at the desk could not recommend any shop, so we decided to take it to another certified smog check station (which also does repairs), Heckendorf's, as it has great reviews here on Yelp! They ran a diagnostic and found nothing wrong; the car passed with flying colors. Disappointed that I wasted 50 dollars on a smog test at Balswick's and had to pay another shop $200 for an unnecessary diagnostic and additional smog test. read more

Today my boss took a 2014 1 ton GMC Duramax to get smog checked since our glorious state demands so. Erin, the manager, told my boss that somebody had cut the dpf out and welded in a piece of tubing in its place. He then proceeded to charge my boss $55 for the test and told him to come back once we put a new dpf in the truck. The re-test was going to cost an additional $20 when we brought the truck back. Back at our shop we looked under the truck and everything was under there right where it belonged. I took the truck back to Erin, interrupted his game of solitaire, and told him that the dpf was right where it was supposed to be. He could not be bothered to look under the truck again. He then pulled out a book and showed me the picture the state of California had provided him. The biggest problem was that the book didn't cover the cab and chassis model truck set up to run a PTO off of the transmission. We argued for a couple minutes and he told me I had to get documentation from the dealer. I then went to Smith Chevrolet and had them print off a build sheet for the truck along with the exhaust diagram for that exact truck. The guys at Smith were extremely puzzled that I was even having this problem since they verified that the truck had not been tampered with. I went back to Balswicks and showed Erin all of the documentation straight from GM. He still could not be bothered to look under the truck and he still swore that we moved the dpf (which we had no reason too and you could plainly tell that everything was factory). I wanted to speak to his boss directly to try and resolve the issue because,I was unable to get anywhere with Erin. I was told Mr. Langly was out of town and it didn't matter anyway because Erin was the Holder of the License. I finally got him to agree to give me the money back since he really didn't do anything to the truck (except turn in a failed smog to the state for tampering). I ended up taking the truck to another smog place and explained what was going on. The guy there crawled under the truck and immediately said that he could see the factory chalk markings on the so called "illegal" pipe. He smog checked the truck and, wouldn't you know it, it passed. This Erin guy thinks he is the god of smog checks and it turns out he doesn't know a damn thing about vehicles. He wasted 3 hours of my day and made me chase down information that he should have looked up himself. I guess the 2 games of solitaire I interrupted were too important. We will never bring our business to Balswicks again. read more
