He came back out and laid some more traps and we caught the mouse (Ruben thinks it was a mouse that just got in, probably from leaving the back door open). After that, we were out of town for about a week and we returned, and found a dead mouse caught in Ruben's trap under the kitchen sink (remember, he left some openings so that any mice in the walls could get out). Ruben came out again and used some foam to close the remaining openings. He also recommended a spray to take out the smell of pheromones which might be attracting new mice (e.g. through the back door). I can say as of now, it appears the mouse problem has been eradicated. - Knowledge of Craft/Professionalism I have had so many questions about what a mouse can and cannot do. Ruben patiently answers all of my questions which has helped me navigate a very difficult situation. Ruben is the epitome of professionalism. A good friend of ours told us about Chris Hall and his company, Wild Things, that specialized in the capture and removal of things that aren't supposed to be living in people's houses. We heard a lot of good things about the company so we looked them up and gave them a call. Soon Chris came by and we told him what we were hearing in the attic and walls. He was very attentive and asked pertinent questions about our situation. He then climbed up in the attic and inspected the area. After he came down, he verified that there was evidence of nesting areas and rat fecal matter up there. The rats had apparently made their home in our attic insulation. Chris then patiently explained how he would take care of the critters and remove them from our house. As our house is over 40 years old we asked about the possibility of stripping out the old insulation and getting new blown in. He then explained the process of removal and installation, and gave us a quote. We agreed on the quote and he began his work. He first installed bait and traps to remove the critters, which was accomplished in a few days' time. He was very unobtrusive in his work; we hardly knew he was there. The removal of insulation was a bit more noisy, as expected, but was done in one day's time. A few days later Chris brought over the equipment for blowing in the new insulation and began work. This was also done in one day's time, though your mileage may vary depending on the size of your house. What was surprising to me was that though they spread plastic tarps to cover everything, there was hardly any mess made while the insulation was blown in. An added bonus was that after he was done our home was much better insulated than before. Cleanup was very quick, and they were done in the early afternoon. The Wild Things people were always reliable and were here when they said they would be here. They always called to give us a heads up when they were coming. I never thought that pest eradication and installing insulation could ever be a good experience, but Chris Hall and the people of Wild Things made it quite delightful. Tuesday morning, we heard a lot of noise in our house in Austin and after some quick looking around, we found the source of the noise -- a squirrel who'd gotten into our chimney and landed -- alive -- in our fireplace. Because of a fireplace screen, he wasn't going anywhere, but we needed him out. After calling a lot of people who couldn't come out that day or who wanted to create a long involved process of sending an "inspector" out, then sending someone out a few days later, I happened to find Urban Jungle while doing a Google search. We called them and they had someone out within an hour. When Will showed up, he came prepared with several kinds of traps because he said squirrels were especially sensitive to being picked up. Amazingly enough, once Will started trying to trap the squirrel, the squirrel ran right back up and out of the chimney. However, the next day, Will came back to seal off entry to the chimney. When it was all said and done, we paid a very reasonable price and Will did good work. Another benefit of Urban Jungle is that their staff all have degrees in wildlife biology or related fields. The additional education makes an obvious difference in both their knowledge and their professional demeanor, which was miles above the usual trapper or exterminator. Over the series of experiences I've had, it was strangely somewhere in the middle. The positive side was that they were incredibly responsive. The customer service is on point and the attitude of their management is definitely a class act. I have no doubt this is a major driver for their most positive reviews and deservedly so. The part where I struggle is the mixed experiences from the various technicians that had come to one of my properties that had an ant, cockroach, and spider problem. The initial $160 was a bit higher than I expected, but a small price that I was willing to pay to rid the property of creepy crawlers. Jason and Servando (sp) extremely brief in their initial run of the place. Even after their treatment, I still saw plenty of spider action where it was clear were not that thorough. After explaining my situation to their staff, they assigned the manager at the time, Daniel, to come back and apply treatment the way he intended. He went nuclear with a whole host of sprays and was extremely thorough both inside and out. His work made a world of difference and there was very little bug activity for close to a year. He was thorough in his explanaition and super transparent with his approach. If every experience was this thorough I think I'd be more receptive to future service. He has unfortunately left the company. Typically they recommend treatment 3 to 4 months. The subsequent visits after my initial concerns were not charged, which I'm thankful for but should not have taken that many times just to get the desired result. It was close to $250 for carpet ant treatment, which felt out of my budget but was assured that the chemicals would be different than the standard ones used for treatment. I was presented with a 30 and 60-day warranty which is fine but not something I elected to go for this past time around. While I'm sure they've done stellar work for other households and other properties, I do wish that I was able to experience the same magic on a consistent basis.

He was so thorough that he even used his ladder to take a closer look at the roof. He let me know that my house was pretty well sealed (from previous owners), but there were a some minor spots that may require sealing. He was very honest and told me that it may be cheaper to have a roofer do the work. We then went up to the attic, and Jeff spent a good amount of time educating me on signs of rodent activity. He even went the extra mile to take a look at the HVAC ducting and water heater to find the source of the noise I've been hearing. While we ultimately couldn't get to the root of the problem, it was very reassuring to learn that it wasn't due to rodents.
