TLDR: historical place on Calle Ocho, long as you're not going there for cigars. This place def has history so I'm not disputing that or the music and atmosphere when you're there. As long as you're going there for the music and taking in the vibes then this is your place. Terrible experience from start to finish, as we walked in at 5pm we were told there's no seats for getting food.... There were 9 tables free. We then get sat in front on the window so we couldn't see any tv for the football. Ball and chain is iconic. It's one of those places that everyone should go at least once. Parking is a mess. I love calle ocho, but the parking is brutal. The actual venue brings me back to my childhood hood going to the beach with my grandpa and heading into the only Hispanic restaurant. It looks just like all the pictures of the lounges in Cuba pre revolution. Very family friendly, the staff is very nice and attentive. I tried the pan con lechón, which was good but it was missing something. I also had the mojito, it was very tart. The lime to sugar ratio was way off. Over all this place is nice, but it's not for me. Should people try it? Yeah at least once. read more

We didn't have a reservation (highly recommend you make one tho!) for a Sunday evening, but was able to be sat outside on their back patio easily. The back patio was dreamy with lots of large trees and foliage and lounge seating. Because there are no tables, only coffee tables, eating a full meal can be a little difficult, so it may be best to just have apps and drinks out there...but that didn't stop me and my friend who were starving and looking forward to Cuban food here! Our signature dishes came out quick and tasted delicious. Large portions of meat and rice, with perfect plantains and flavorful beans. We also sipped on a guava flavored Pastelito Daquiri and the Mojito! Both delicious. Prices are on the moderately higher end but that was expected. We purposely chose Ball & Chain because they offer a salsa lesson and dancing after 9pm on Sundays! The lesson wasn't very long and was a little hard to follow in the crowd. Ball and Chain was the perfect end to our first visit to Calle Ocho. We were flying high from the juice at Los Pinarenos (mango, pina and cane juice) bought cigars from a woman who only sold the cigars she made (near juice) eggs, bacon, simple buttered bread w applewood bacon and guava pastilles at Party Cake Bakery (get pastilles to go too) and Cuban coffee at La Colada gourmet. Then we landed at Ball and Chain. Music was the house band and they were consummate professionals, just vibing out at 2 on a Tuesday. So soulful and fun. Staff was incredibly warm. Cuban sandwich was perfect. My wife's mojito, fresh and not too boozy for 2pm. We fought over the elote, 2 skewers and delicious cheese. We stayed about an hour and a half, no need to go anywhere else. The back area was quiet but we sat there for a few minutes, enjoying the misting fans and imagining the famous jazz bands of the past 80 years playing on the stage shaped like a hollowed out pineapple. The vintage fans on the ceiling are all connected on one big belt, each fan shaped like two metal palm leaves. Clearly a local treasure. Welcoming to visitors but not pandering to tourists. Great place to get cocktails, bite to eat, and enjoy the live music! BE AWARE! 18% tip is added to your bill no matter how big your party is. We accidentally gave our waiter $53 tip without knowing. There is live music inside the building and if you choose to sit on the back patio there is a DJ. The back patio also allows you to smoke, there is ash trays at the table. When we visited there was only a few people vaping however. The indoor dining is regular restaurant tables while the patio is more coffee tables and patio couches! There is also some room to do some dancing. Keep in mind the music is pretty loud if noise bothers you at all. The service was great and friendly. The food was really quick to come out and drinks came out shortly after. There is a bar indoors and outdoors. The server was also taking pictures of your table party as long as you asked. We had a party of 4; ordered 3 cocktails, 1 soda, 2 orders of tacos, and 3 appetizers which came out to $190. One thing that threw me off was there is a person in the men's & woman's bathroom that assists you in washing your hands?
