If you're in Little Havana and want a spot that really feels like Miami, this is it. Stopped into Ball & Chain for the vibe and a couple drinks and it delivered. Tried the Piña Basil Mezcalina and their famous mojito. Both were refreshing, well balanced, and clearly made with quality ingredients. The mojito definitely lives up to the hype. The space is what makes it stand out. Live music in the main bar and a back patio with another bar and stage that brings great energy. Easy to move around and find your vibe. They also serve food until midnight which is perfect if you are hopping around Calle Ocho. Between the music, drinks, and crowd, you can really feel the culture here. TLDR: historical place on Calle Ocho, long as you're not going there for cigars. This place def has history so I'm not disputing that or the music and atmosphere when you're there. As long as you're going there for the music and taking in the vibes then this is your place. Outside of that, not a big selection of cigars and prices aren't that great and getting a drink is somewhat quick on the first one, not so much on getting other ones. read more

Ball & Chain is a Miami classic! I stopped by this evening to have some bites and drinks with my family. We all shared a bunch of plates including the yuca fries, beef empanadas & fried pork. I had a Maracuya punch which was delicious. We were seated in the back area where there was a live DJ and the music and vibe was fantastic! Lots of dancing and celebrating as the tables around us ordered drink services that came with confetti and sparklers. The staff was very helpful and attentive, the servers and food runners were on top of making sure we had everything that we needed and that the dishes were cleared in a timely manner. Overall 10/10 experience! Will definitely be back read more

There was a private event on the patio so we sat at the bar. The Staff was friendly and had good recommendations. We had jerk wings and beef empanadas. Both were delicious. They had an awesome live band playing. It was just after happy hour but still lively. It is loud but you can still hold a conversation. read more

Ball and chain is a Calle ocho staple, and a cool place to take out of town guests for drinks, Cuban food, and good music. The open air bar is large and allows space for dancing during dining hours but also a club like atmosphere after 10pm. For those a bit apprehensive of the Cuban Spanish spoken at every delicious eating establishment in Miami, have no fear. These servers and bartenders are definitely made for the tourist crowd and were incredibly patient and kind serving myself and my gringo husband and making us feel like we belonged there! read more

Stopped in for a drink after a food tour the recommendation from our guide. There was live music in the front of the restaurant and they have a fairly large outdoor area in the back. Ball and Chain was the perfect end to our first visit to Calle Ocho. We were flying high from the juice at Los Pinarenos (mango, pina and cane juice) bought cigars from a woman who only sold the cigars she made (near juice) eggs, bacon, simple buttered bread w applewood bacon and guava pastilles at Party Cake Bakery (get pastilles to go too) and Cuban coffee at La Colada gourmet. Then we landed at Ball and Chain. Music was the house band and they were consummate professionals, just vibing out at 2 on a Tuesday. So soulful and fun. Staff was incredibly warm. Cuban sandwich was perfect. My wife's mojito, fresh and not too boozy for 2pm. We fought over the elote, 2 skewers and delicious cheese. We stayed about an hour and a half, no need to go anywhere else. The back area was quiet but we sat there for a few minutes, enjoying the misting fans and imagining the famous jazz bands of the past 80 years playing on the stage shaped like a hollowed out pineapple. The vintage fans on the ceiling are all connected on one big belt, each fan shaped like two metal palm leaves. Clearly a local treasure. Welcoming to visitors but not pandering to tourists. Ball and chain is iconic. It's one of those places that everyone should go at least once. Parking is a mess. I love calle ocho, but the parking is brutal. The actual venue brings me back to my childhood hood going to the beach with my grandpa and heading into the only Hispanic restaurant. It looks just like all the pictures of the lounges in Cuba pre revolution. Very family friendly, the staff is very nice and attentive. I tried the pan con lechón, which was good but it was missing something. I also had the mojito, it was very tart. The lime to sugar ratio was way off. Over all this place is nice, but it's not for me. Should people try it? Yeah at least once. read more

Decided to stop at this spot since it's a staple in the area and it was lively. They had a great dj, the majority of the tables were taken so we sat at the bar. The bartender made our drinks to perfection, we didn't order any food but the bartender made sure to keep our drinks fresh. I'd come back and get a table as it looked like a great time. What an amazing time we had at ball and chain! Booked the outside Patio with all the things - salsa dancers, band, cigar rolling, fedora making, dominos. Ball and Chain is located in Calle Ocho. The restaurant has a historic and nostalgic atmosphere. They have live music such as jazz and salsa everyday . It's a fun place to go out for drinks and to dance salsa. I love that they offer free Salsa and bachata classes. Bar chain offers, delicious Cuban food and tapas. They have ceviche, conch and empanadas. I ordered the steak rice and beans and for drinks, I got a banana daiquiri which was so refreshing made with mint and coffee. Definitely a place to check out while you're at Calle ocho for fun and dancing. read more

Located in the heart of Little Havana with so much history, Ball & Chain offers an intimate, fun setting for date night and friend outings. We didn't have a reservation (highly recommend you make one tho!) for a Sunday evening, but was able to be sat outside on their back patio easily. The back patio was dreamy with lots of large trees and foliage and lounge seating. Because there are no tables, only coffee tables, eating a full meal can be a little difficult, so it may be best to just have apps and drinks out there...but that didn't stop me and my friend who were starving and looking forward to Cuban food here! Our signature dishes came out quick and tasted delicious. Large portions of meat and rice, with perfect plantains and flavorful beans. We also sipped on a guava flavored Pastelito Daquiri and the Mojito! Both delicious. Prices are on the moderately higher end but that was expected. We purposely chose Ball & Chain because they offer a salsa lesson and dancing after 9pm on Sundays! The lesson wasn't very long and was a little hard to follow in the crowd. But the free dancing in the inside space was fun! I will definitely be back for more of that! read more

My wife Mady and I joined our friends David, Lizmar, and Felipe and Salomé here for Valentine's, and we haven't stopped talking about it since. Honestly, the night wouldn't have been the same without Felipe--he secured the spot for us and made sure everything was perfect. The food was spot on--the skirt steak was cooked perfectly and the mariquitas were crispy and fresh. But the Piña Colada? Next level. It's practically a centerpiece with the sparklers. The real highlight for us was the band. When they broke into "Guantanamera," the whole crowd started singing along. It was such a unifying, joyful moment. This place has so much potential yet falls so short. When walking in they had half the bar closed off (don't know why). Very limited seating around the bar. Not to mention you cannot sit at any table without ordering food service. I'm paying for drinks and can sit down?! The drinks were not very strong and for a Tito's and pineapple and a makers and coke it was $40. Over priced. This was such a disappointment. read more

Live music was playing as I walked in. I was immediately seated and given a menu. I ordered their famous mojito and vaca frita. The mojito was very tasty but nothing special. The vaca frita was shredded steak, white rice, black beans and plantains. It was very flavorful and tasty. I would come back for the live music! Great place to get cocktails, bite to eat, and enjoy the live music! BE AWARE! 18% tip is added to your bill no matter how big your party is. We accidentally gave our waiter $53 tip without knowing. There is live music inside the building and if you choose to sit on the back patio there is a DJ. The back patio also allows you to smoke, there is ash trays at the table. When we visited there was only a few people vaping however. The indoor dining is regular restaurant tables while the patio is more coffee tables and patio couches! There is also some room to do some dancing. Keep in mind the music is pretty loud if noise bothers you at all. The service was great and friendly. The food was really quick to come out and drinks came out shortly after. There is a bar indoors and outdoors. The server was also taking pictures of your table party as long as you asked. We had a party of 4; ordered 3 cocktails, 1 soda, 2 orders of tacos, and 3 appetizers which came out to $190. One thing that threw me off was there is a person in the men's & woman's bathroom that assists you in washing your hands? It was a nice experience of Little Havana and great place to spend some time to relax with friends or family. Stop in to check it out even just to order a drink! read more

The beef empanadas were a 10/10 perfectly seasoned and crispy. The chicken empanadas didn't hit the same for me, but the jamón croquetas? Absolutely insane. A must. For appetizers, the prawns al ajillo were delicious super flavorful and cooked perfectly. We also tried the grilled octopus, which was good, but not my favorite. It leaned a bit bland for my taste, even with the sauce. Now, the must-get: the carnitas with pickled onions. Easily one of the best dishes of the night so flavorful, tender, and perfectly balanced. For entrées, we had the ribeye steak and arroz con pollo, plus sides of tostones and yuca. Everything here delivered. The steak was cooked perfectly and seasoned just right not overly salty. The arroz con pollo was phenomenal, the kind of dish you could eat every single day. The tostones were crispy and tossed in garlic, which took the flavor to another level, and the yuca was melt-in-your-mouth good. I also ordered a mojito, which unfortunately was very watered down, I barely got any of that classic mojito flavor. Service overall was solid, especially considering how loud the restaurant gets it was honestly hard to hear each other at the table, so shoutout to our server for keeping everything straight. The appetizers came out quickly, back-to-back, which we loved. The only downside was the wait for the entrées they took quite a while after we finished the apps, even though we ordered everything at once. Overall, amazing food, great energy, and definitely worth going just be prepared for a lively (and loud) atmosphere.

I used to go to the club in my college years. After the hotel was sold, the club moved to the Rocky Horror venue in Coconut Grove. In 1999 after that closed too, the club became a roaming pop up at different South Florida venues. Which is how I came to be at Bar Nancy in Little Havana on a Saturday night. They host a monthly Kitchen Club night. Almost everything was closed in Little Havana by the time I arrived so it was surprisingly easy to find metered street parking only two blocks away. Bar Nancy did not have a cover charge which was nice. The bar is decorated like a pirate ship with many nautical touches. It is named for the brigantine Nancy, which transported war supplies during the American Revolution. The room the bar is located in was small, dark, hot, and crowded. Many people enjoyed themselves on the dance floor in front of the DJ. They also have a backyard area that was popular. My favorite room was the one between the two. It was decorated like the Captains quarters with a couch and comfortable chairs. I could still enjoy the music and more importantly, the air conditioning. During the night I had a delicious Amaretto Sour. Despite the dive bar surroundings, it was a hefty $15. While that is expensive for a cocktail, it was a small price to pay to relive my youth for one evening.
