I…read morealways love walking into thrift stores and seeing what people have discarded, only to be rediscovered by someone else. As soon as you walk in you realize this isn't your average thrift store. The store is well laid out, organized and has that fantastic smell of used gear (but in a good way); it all brings back good memories of the past. They have a good assortment of records (yes vinyl is making a comeback). And they are dirt cheap; mostly costing less than a buck! I picked up two records and it cost me a toonie. How great is that!! The store shelves are organized in a great way, great friendly and inviting owners, wonderful jazz music was playing in the background, housewares, books, clothing, toys, electronics and even furniture were available to snap up. Be careful, walk into Junk in the Trunk and you'll be walking into a time-warp that you may not want to leave.

I took a long walk around Calgary yesterday. It was a beautiful warm and sunny day and I wasn't…read moreabout to miss it. Interesting people were out, cute dogs were being walked by their owners, and everyone seemed to be in a good mood. Part of my stroll was down the "hip" Uptown area of 17th Avenue. What drew me into Steeling Home from my walk was an on sale desk fan that was displayed outside on a cute antique table. The price was right, but I knew darn well that it would be hard to get it in the suitcase for my eventual trip back to the San Francisco Bay Area. I might still change my mind on that.... Anyway, I decided to stroll around inside and really enjoyed exploring the many pockets of interesting stuff this relatively small store holds. It has books, antiques, jewelery, and much more in-between. The people watching was fun too, with a fresh touch of Portlandia thrown in. I'm glad I stopped in and reminded myself that marching around a new City is fun, and stopping to explore some of its quirks is even better.

They get some really great items from Calgary's fashionable women, often new with tags so it's a great deal. I decided to go after hearing rave reviews on their styling service from a friend so I booked an appointment with Lee online. They called me during the week to check on what sort of things I was looking for and when I came in for the appointment they had pulled several different outfits to get a feel for what I liked and then a bunch of other items to start with. The outfits were really cute and I am not the most stylish person so found this really helpful. Lee continued to pull options and items until I feel like I had tried on most things in the store. I only purchased four items but I really like what I walked away with AND I didn't feel any pressure to buy more which is so refreshing. Overall an absolutely awesome experience and I would totally do it again since they constantly get new things you never know when they'll have new items that are perfect for you.

The place is in an apartment building which is strange but they seemed to have divided the area really well. Clothing is organised by color and size so it is really easy to browse clothing that you want or don't want. Today there was a discount on clothing depending on the color of the tag, so that in itself was fun. The clothing was surprisingly pretty fashion forward with a lot of designer names, some stuff was expensive and then some stuff was really affordable. The designs and taste of the store owner is great and I can tell she sifts through what comes in. There are many places to try on clothing and there is even a little place to sit and relax and view mags. The staff is extremely friendly and I will come back to this store when I have more time.
