It is obvious that effort goes in to make sure that stock is not junky or dirty. Staff and volunteers are very willing to help and prices are better than most second-hand stores. Fun to check out the on-going silent auction of artwork, jewelry, collectibles, etc. Furniture tends to sell very quickly because of the prices and value. Several stores and businesses donate to it as well as ordinary folk decluttering or downsizing. You can find everything from Ikea to antiques.

There is an awesome process in place for those who want to submit clothing for consignment and an easy, transparent way for people to see whether their consigned items have been purchased. I have felt intimidated when dropping clothing off at other thrift stores, but Urban Thrift is definitely a welcoming space! I was told that the store holds a variety of special events and promotions, all of which sound very interesting although I have not yet been able to attend any. Interesting people were out, cute dogs were being walked by their owners, and everyone seemed to be in a good mood. Part of my stroll was down the "hip" Uptown area of 17th Avenue. What drew me into Steeling Home from my walk was an on sale desk fan that was displayed outside on a cute antique table. The price was right, but I knew darn well that it would be hard to get it in the suitcase for my eventual trip back to the San Francisco Bay Area. I might still change my mind on that.... Anyway, I decided to stroll around inside and really enjoyed exploring the many pockets of interesting stuff this relatively small store holds. It has books, antiques, jewelery, and much more in-between. The people watching was fun too, with a fresh touch of Portlandia thrown in. I'm glad I stopped in and reminded myself that marching around a new City is fun, and stopping to explore some of its quirks is even better.

Well, that's not exactly true - I stayed because I didn't want to look like some freeloader crashing their party. But is exactly true that my desire to keep up appearances gave me more than ample time to peruse their wares. Ten Thousand Villages is located in an old 3-story house and has a great selection of jewellery, servingware, statues, and other home décor global treasures. They are also quick to refill the complimentary coffee pots, which is a bonus. I guess they care as much for their customers as they do for the native artisans that they represent. The coffee with a conscience being served up here is flavourful and fortunately available for purchase upstairs.

All that my gut was telling me when looking around was that most of what's there would be clutter in my house, which was a little disappointing. It would be cool and interesting clutter, but clutter nonetheless. The variety of products in this sizable store is impressive and they do sell tea, coffee, etc., but I would never make a special trip here just for that. Being that Christmas is coming, it's a good place to buy unique ornaments and stocking stuffers.
