Baleen is a great place to get drinks. The food is also very good, chef Houng (sp?) is great, we always find something; but honestly, we aren't in love with the current menu (sorry Chef!). We did come for a wine tasting party that Chef did really well and, we must have had a great time because we got three cases (and still like them). I got together with an old friend of mine from college who was staying at the Portofino. It was a really nice experience, and we couldn't have scripted a better location than Baleen. Very nice atmosphere, lots of space, view of the ocean, and most of all a very kind hostess (Minasa - not sure of the spelling) who made us feel very welcome. It was a weeknight, so we were able to order from the happy hour menu even though it was past 7pm. The miso salmon, fish sliders, parmesan truffle fries, and chicken wings were all excellent. Great ambience, good food, and a welcoming vibe ... all contributed to one memorable evening. read more

Have absolutely loved going to this restaurant especially during breakfast! My family and I have been staying at the hotel across the way and have frequented the restaurant during our stay. The hostess Monique is always friendly and welcoming upon our arrival and did anything she could to make sure my 1 year old son and I were comfortable. Steve our waiter was absolutely great with providing us prompt service (considering it's tough to eat with a 1 year old alone) and made sure we had everything we needed to make our meal enjoyable and pleasant! I also have to comment on the music selection because I somehow have to get my hands on that lovely playlist! We stayed at the Portofino hotel, also not the greatest experience, and both mornings had breakfast here. First morning my husband took care of the bill so I'm not sure what was listed, but second morning we had breakfast me, my husband, my dad and 3 babies (1, 2 and 4 years old), so 3 adults and 3 very young children and they charged a "Service fee" of 20 some dollars plus 18% gratuity. I asked the first person that walked by I believe the manager and she said that is a fee for large parties. the fees added more than $10 per meal. So we paid over $25 for a kids simple eggs and toast breakfast. the eggs weren't very good the first morning, I ordered over medium and they were pretty much sunny side up, slimy and the kids wouldn't eat it. I don't like complaining or sending food back so they just ate my fruit and toast. When I stopped the manager she was extremely rude I asked how we were a large party and quickly said all parties 6 or more are considered large parties and we charge to accommodate large parties and walked away. I wasn't done talking as she was walking away I asked what they did to accommodate us and she just walked away without any concern or care to explain the extra charges. On top of that We sat on the bar side of the restaurant because there was a large party taking over the restaurant side and we sat at short tables where my 6'3 husband and 6' tall dad were uncomfortable but we didn't complain. If anything we made accommodations for the restaurant and were treated poorly. I will never go back. The food was ok but definitely not worth the money. read more

Baleen Kitchen has been on my mind for a while so when my Mom friends suggested it for GNO, I was all in. Parking is free but you may need to walk a bit. Now here's the tricky part. There's no signage. I happen to see staff members from Portofino's who pointed to a nondescript grayish standalone building. Lo and behold, here it is. Very nice entrance. I walked up the stairs and to the right I see my group. The place has a warm, elegant ambiance. Very welcoming. We had a great time sampling the Happy Hour menu which is a great value. The featured cocktail was the Winter Mule which was excellent! (I had two) Other standouts were the Charcuterie sampler, Brussels Sprouts, Poke and Truffle Fries. The flatbread pizza was one of the best I've had. We also ordered the calamari and shishito peppers which were good as well. Our server was personable and very accomodating. The view of the Harbor as the sun set was beautiful. Great vibe here and comfortable enough to kick back and catch up.with friends. Will definitely be back! read more

Let me start off by saying the food was delicious! It was a little disappointed with the fact that I was seated on an outside table where the lighting was so poor that I could not see my food while eating it. When I was seated it was sunset so I didn't realize there would be a problem, and I figured that there was lighting to accommodate once it got dark. The only reason you can see my food is because of flash on my phone. But I do have to say that the staff understood my concern and they tried to fix it which I was very grateful for. I've been staying at the hotel and therefore I figured it would just be better for me to take the rest to go instead of trying to have them fix something for one person at the time (which eventually they will have to). Long story short the food is delicious, the staff is amazing, I was thinking about rating the place four stars but I don't think that that was necessary considering the circumstances. HOLY CRAP! This was the best dining experience we've had in eight years in the Southbay. It is an absolute hidden gem. The steak was perfectly cooked. The take on different tastes and flavors were unreal and I cannot recommend this place enough. I got food poisoning from here after eating the birria benedict so I don't think I will be back anytime soon. I believe it was from the hollandaise sauce. The meat was topped with scrambled eggs instead of poached eggs which isn't normal for a benedict. Also, the dish was very greasy and overall did not taste good. read more

This is fine dining at its best. Last night, I had the small, but actually quite large, rib eye steak. It was absolutely, positively, the best ribeye steak I have ever had! Period. Cooked to perfection, and with more flavor than any I have ever had. My three other comrades had equally outstanding meals -Scallops, swordfish and cod. All of them raved about their entrees. Went to Baleen for my birthday brunch. Really disappointing experience. We were put at a very low table, very awkward for my 6ft3 husband. His knees were up to his ears. Added to that, the chairs were full of crumbs and food. Very strange. The portions were small, the Avo on Toast was bland (hello, add Lemon Juice at least) and my latte was made with half warm water. I have been to Baleen Kitchen a couple of times for brunch with family. We were there around 8-8:30 in the morning and it was practically empty. Beautiful and clean decor, warm fireplace, and lots of natural lighting with good view of the harbor. It is a very relaxing environment. They have brunch service on the weekends with a good selection of items. Food is good, but not something that would get me to keep coming back. It was also on the pricey side for me (~$25 per) The restaurant staff are all friendly and helpful. Our server constantly checking on us if we needed anything. Overall, this place has a good ambiance and very relaxing place to catch up with family. read more

We had our wedding at the Portofino hotel and I believe most of the food comes from Baleen / is cooked by the same chefs and the food at our wedding was AMAZING! However, this review is regarding our recent dinner we had at Baleen, care of Mary from Portofino, for some issues we had regarding our big weekend. First off, we wanted to thank Mary for her kindness and willingness to take care of us, it was much appreciated. We decided to have dinner on a Sunday evening, to celebrate the three year anniversary of when we met. Upon arriving to Baleen, we were greeted warmly. Unfortunately, our name was not in the system, even though Mary confirmed with us. I was nervous about this, but the manager spoke with us and honored what we were promised. Again, much appreciated, could have left us with another bad experience but the manager on duty that night handled it with grace. We started with the ahi tuna tacos (which we also had at our wedding cocktail hour). This is by far one of my favorite items that Baleen does, the execution is flawless. The crispiness of the wonton combined with the sauce they mix the fish with is so delicious. A obvious winner every single time we have had it! We both ordered cocktails, the huckleberry was good but the playing with fire that I got was amazing. It reminded me of a mexican spicy candy, could have had another! We then ordered the lobster mac and the clam chowder. The lobster mac was delicious, however, i would highly suggest mixing it up. We did not, so we ate all the goodies off the top and then were left with buttery noodles at the end, which we didn't eat. There was a healthy dose of lobster inside, so it is definitely worth the price! The chowder was very good, heavy on the bacon taste, so if you do not like bacon, do not get it. Our entrees were The Cioppino and The Surf & Turf. The lobster was cooked well and very good. The filet was also good, but heavy on the char taste. The cioppino was also very delicious! I ended up taking it home and it was still very tasty the next day (not always the case with fish). However, I was sad because i barely ate the bread that is served with it and they did not pack it with our leftovers. The bread is the best part to dip into the sauce! :( We also ordered the side mushrooms, they reminded me of escargot. Very buttery and garlicky, almost a bit too much butter. I did like that they used all different types of mushrooms in the dish. We ended with the bread pudding and the warm chocolate cake. We did not care much for the cake, it wasn't a gooey chocolate inside, more like a moist chocolate fudge that absorbed into the cake already. The bread pudding was SO good! I love butterscotch with bread pudding and they nailed it, that is for sure the desert to get! I included photos of everything we ordered in my review, for reference. My husband and I wanted to find a place in Redondo Beach that offered either a nice breakfast or brunch and was NOT filled with a ton of people. Neither he nor I are too keen on waiting 45 minutes or longer for a table. I found Baleen on the Internet and was pleasantly surprised to find out they take reservations. This put them on my "happy list" right away. We decided to check them out on a Saturday at around noon. This restaurant is so peaceful and the location is perfect. It's on the Marina, so you have a wonderful view all the boats and the surrounding area. It's located right across the walkway from The Noble Hotel. It's been a VERY LONG TIME since we dined at a restaurant where the staff was so courteous and attentive. The hostess was very quick to greet us, check us in, and get us seated. Our server, Hannah, was extremely polite, helpful, professional, and friendly without being intrusive. Our every need was anticipated. We didn't have to ask for anything. It was truly a refreshing experience. We were wowed by the ambiance and the service. We were hoping the food would be just as good, and we were not disappointed. We ordered the Eggs Benedict with pulled pork. We also ordered the Wild Mushroom Omelette with a side of bacon. Everything was cooked to perfection. I was particularly happy with the portions. They were neither too big nor too small. It seem nowadays a single meal can feed five or it's so tiny you need to stop at McDonald's on the way home because your dinner was more of an appetizer. My only suggestion, and it's a small one, is to add "regular" breakfast sausage to the menu. Currently, they only offer the apple wood chicken sausage. Honestly, I've eaten this at other establishments. Chicken is a very dry protein and not much can make it moist. Plus, I'm not a big fan of "sweet" in my foods (unless it's a dessert). There should be options on the menu for people who are not "afraid" to eat pork, heck even an Italian sausage option would have been welcomed. Thank goodness, they offered regular bacon. Both of us enjoyed EVERY MOMENT we were dining at this establishment and we look forward to adding them to our list of brunch spots. Overall 5 stars (the lack of pork sausage is not enough for me to give less than 5 stars). It was a wonderful experience for us both. read more

Baleen has been around for years now, and as many times as I've eaten here, the food is still just ok. Depending on the time of day, parking can be scarce but if it is, there is parking at Joe's Crab Shack and if you're up for a nice stroll, theres a larger paid lot on Harbor Drive. The restaurant offers guest the option to dine upstairs or downstairs overlooking the harbor. For those guest who find stairs the enemy, there is an elevator to assist. We were greeted with a smile by the hostess, a reservation was not needed and we were seated immediately. Our server touched our table in a short time and took our order. For drinks we ordered Sangria and a Absolution "Cannonball Run" IPA; main dishes Wild Mushroom Omelet w/English Muffin and potatoes, and a Croissant & Egg Sandwich. I ordered the Omelet which was under whelming and flat. Big chunks of goat cheese in some bites, small amounts of arugula and mushrooms with a lot of egg - eh I could've done a better job. The potatoes were cold and flavorless. As for the Croissant, it had to have been better because my friend had no complaints except it was cold. I ask myself WHY do I keep coming back if the food sucks, well the drinks are amazing, the service has always been a great and it's right on the ocean. If you're ok with subpar food but an awesome environment, Baleen might be your place. read more

We had dinner here tonight to celebrate my husband's birthday. This was the first time eating at Baleen Kitchen, even though we've lived in Redondo Beach for 13 years. The service was excellent. Our friendly server, Heidi, was great! We ordered and shared the Noble chopped salad which very tasty and delicious. The Miso cod was excellent. It was very flavorful and perfectly prepared. The scallops were also very nicely prepared and yummy. Heidi brought us a "birthday" dessert with a candle for the celebration. The service from Heidi was impeccable--very helpful and attentive, with always just the right amount of time to enjoy courses. The food was out of this world. I can say the scallops are huge, pillowy, fresh, and prepared with a heavenly sauce. The ribeye was out of this world, as well. We had planned on going to Tony's on the pier the next night, but decided to come back to Baleen instead. The And, we had a fabulous breakfast there, too. The fresh fruit platter was extremely generous and flavorful, and the eggs were clearly fresh and free ranged. The yolks were thick and buttery, with an intense orange color. Visiting friends staying nearby we tried this place twice for dinner and breakfast. Service was excellent both times but found the food to be very hit and miss. The swordfish dish was excellent and probably the best on the menu, but everything else we tried was really lacking. Lobster Mac was probably the most disappointing. Lobster was merely a topping and not mixed into the Mac and was overall extremely bland. No seasoning! The scallops were cooked well but for $38, I expected more than just 3 scallops. For breakfast, we were served stale and cold potatoes. Nothing else really impressed. read more

This is a nice place right on the marina. I sat outside (because Covid) on a gorgeous day. It was still brunch so I ordered the eggs Benedict. I gotta say that they were average, maybe a little above because of the dark orange yolks (free range?). Mine came with extra egg shell, luckily they didn't charge me extra. The service was not on par with what a place like this should have. No water refill, no "how is everything ", no "can I get you anything else ", just lacking. The worse part is the price. For the quality of food and service, the price was way more than they should be charging. So to sum up, average restaurant with a nice location. I believe it cost us 5 bucks with tip. I typically would try one of the favorites, but was craving a burger. Luckily the burger was fantastic. Delicious and custom cooked to your desire combined with a side of fries. It'll definitely leave you filled and happy. I also tried the chia pudding and it was amazing.l starter.
