This is the best baklava in the state. I get baklava at a really good international bakery near me, but it still doesn't compare to Baklava King. It's worth the drive to Santee. It's delicious for yourself and also a guaranteed wonderful gift - sure to be a hit as soon as it is tasted. It is not an eat-in bakery and it's tucked away in a business center, but they will help walk-ins. It's better to order ahead. The pastries are packages beautifully and freeze very well in case you want to purchase it early. This place deserves the 120 five star reviews they currently have on Yelp. It is simply the best baklava I have ever had! Even better than homemade. My sister and I wandered over there after having sushi at a nearby restaurant. We each got a medium box of it but ended up loving it so much that it he boxes didn't last the night. We kept talking about how good the baklava was but how we should avoid going back for our figure's sake. But by the second morning, my sister could no longer resist it and she went back for their big box. And the people that work there are SO nice. They label the baklava so you know what to order and even snapped a photo of me to post on Facebook. They are currently running a special where they give a free slice of Revani cake if you check in on Facebook. And boy was that cake so good too! As I've mentioned in order reviews, I used to hate baklava growing up. Now, I love the stuff! Actually, let me clarify. I love MOST baklava. This dessert is popular in several different countries in the Middle East. I usually like the ones made with a simple syrup mixture or even honey. There are some that are made with rose water, which I generally tend to stay away from. Not that it's bad, but it's just not my favorite. Now, Baklava King doesn't use rose water. No floral taste here. Just unbelievably delicious baklava made with either walnuts or pistachios. They also have rolled baklavas made with chocolate and walnuts and also some that are made with hazelnuts. I got a sampler box called the ensemble and loved each and every flavor. They also gave me a sample of a dessert made with angel hair dough. A little hard to eat, but it was tasty nonetheless. Lastly, keep in mind that this place isn't a "shop" where you can peruse thru glass cases full of goodies. It's basically a mini-factory. It's in an industrial-type building. You get to the door and have to knock on the metal gate to let you in. With that being said, the lady in the front was friendly and called the owner to help me out. The owner is one of the nicest ladies you will ever meet. She helped walk me through all the different baklavas that they sell and even offered me a few samples to try. Lastly.... for the 2nd time..... These baklavas are sold at The Kebab Shop franchises in San Diego and the Bay Area. Maybe if I were in a small village in Turkey and someone's grandmother offered me her baklava, there would be a fair challenge. Chances are if you've eaten at any restaurant or cafe in SD that offers baklava it was lovingly made by the ladies at Baklava King. If you want to be the next hit at your next social gathering or office party, consider getting baklava from Baklava King. They pride their baklava being made from six ingredients: phyllo, nuts, butter, sugar, lemon, and water. Their water is filtered three times and use high-quality butter that won't release water while baking. The lemon-sugar-water acts as the "honey" that will penetrate the phyllo as opposed to coating it, which makes the baklava overly sticky. My taste-testers (aka my coworkers and family) agreed that it wasn't too sticky nor sweet. Baklava sold here comes in two forms: the familiar triangle form and the rolled form (burma). The triangles are sold as either pistachio or walnut (the traditional baklava nuts) while there are more variations in the burma form. Such additions include chocolate drizzle with either pistachio or walnut or different combinations of nuts such as almond and pecan. Personally I like the burmas because of the smaller portions, which allows people to try out more flavors. My favorite flavor is the hazelnut burma because it has that tease of Nutella without the need for chocolate. If given a sampler portion of just this I'd be inhaling everything in one sitting. While they deliver to all 50 states their home base is in Santee and they do give SD residents the option to pick up their own orders. Not only that but should you wish to pick up your order you also have the option to request a 10 piece sampler box of their most common items for $11 AND at their discretion, free samples of their product. When I came in to pick up my orders Sarka (one of the co-owners) has always been so kind and cheerful. Eptiome of "service with a smile". When I came in to pick up my baklava for the first time she slipped a sample of their other famous dessert product, revani. Also known as harissa, this is a semolina-based syrup cake with toasted coconut on top. The cake is moist yet fluffy and the toasted coconut gives it an added crunch texture that I like. Though I can eat this by itself this is my idea of a perfect cake to accompany coffee or tea. My coworkers do agree, though they prefer their baklava better. I pride myself as the go-to to bring desserts to work parties, social gatherings and potlucks because satisfying people's sweet tooths is usually easier and cheaper than getting appetizers or entrees. Due to the enthusiastic response from some coworkers this is going into the regular rotation of businesses to supply desserts for whatever occasion. read more

Their Santee location is a little out of the way, but totally worth it. The owners are super nice and always offer samples when you stop by. It's not the easiest place to find as its in the far back part of an industrial park and without really any signage to guide you until you see the front door. This is where they make the baklava. The lady there was very nice and even gave a free sample to me and the kiddos. She told us what the most popular ones were. We bought a variety box with both triangles and rolls and various nut varieties on top. One bite and you'll see why this place has such great ratings. I have tried at most Turkish/Greek/MiddleEastern places in East Coast & West Coast, and a lot of them in San Diego and LA. Nope, none of them is as good as Baklava King's. Their baklava must be the best in the world. It's more like Baklava God, rather than just a King.
