Though it's been here for years last night was my first time. I was alone but the atmosphere makes the single diner totally at ease. A simple salad nicoise and two small pieces of bread were the perfect late night dinner. Perfectly cooked tuna- and the eggs! Just on the edge of runny- medium light like I love them. The service was excellent, not less than one would receive at prime time. A waiter and second waiter. The menu is varied and has something for everyone. Worth the effort and the price. I'll be back!

Grand Central certainly has the ostentatious architecture to showcase a fine dining experience, especially in the spacious Vanderbilt Hall. Just before heading to the Morgan Library nearby, Jamie W and I thought this might be an appropriate place to have brunch. We were seated in a roomy booth in the cavernous, atmospheric main dining hall, though we discovered there was also a clubbier dining room in the back. Next time. Lke a Parisian brasserie, they offer a three-course Lunch Prix Fixe menu, this one for the fair price of $35. For the first course, Jamie ordered the Green Salad, a simple plate of butter lettuce arranged like a flower and accessorized with haricot verts, cherry tomatoes, and sliced radish (Photo 9). I went for the more substantial Beet Salad with sliced beets, quinoa, feta, and walnuts drizzled with balsamic vinaigrette (Photo 5). Good though a tad sweeter than I preferred. For our entree, we both ordered the same thing, the Chicken Paillard, a pan-seared chicken breast flattened to a uniform thickness. It was prepared with a light sauce of Nicoise olives and topped with a light salad of mixed greens and sliced almonds (Photo 7). Simple and a bit salty. Dessert was the third course, smallish amuse-bouche servings. Jamie had the quenelle-size Dark Chocolate Mousse with Whipped Cream (Photo 8), while I had the Roule aux Citron, a slice of Swiss roll cake filled with lemon curd mousse, and meringue (Photo 6). Light treats finished with a $5.50 Coffee (Photo 10). The bar in the back looked dazzling with multiple tiers of liquor bottles (Photo). Open until 2AM so a nocturnal return visit seems likely. FOOD - 3.5 stars...reasonably good French fare, some flavor hiccups AMBIANCE - 5 stars...Grand Central architecture is quite impressive, very spacious, a bit of an echo chamber SERVICE - 3.5 stars...a bit transactional, some forgetfulness TOTAL - 4 stars...definitely worth trying for the unique setting even more than the food RELATED - Hungry in NYC? Pistachio croissant was alright, not the worst but not the best either. They had a variety of pastries and a little section in the back where you could sit and eat. Service was good I was in and out. Nice open windows in the front with a view of the side of the New York Public Library.

In the same bakery class as Maman, but an Acapulco low tide cliff dive in quality. I had great kouign amann and a croissant the first visit. Return visit found doughy, heavy uninspired croissants! Did the inspired owners sell? Quel dommage! Now it's just another humdrum high-priced loveless bakery, treading on past glory. Coffee is excellent. Lots of pour overs and other things that should be enjoyed, if it weren't for the cramped stool seating and no hooks under their counters. It deflates the nature of your morning enjoyment. It's office pick up and go. Except I don't have an office here. They mill some of their flours for whole grain breads. Nice fast sandwich case. Won't thrill ya, won't kill ya. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
