Martina was very responsive with details and friendly about all my request for a last minute birthday cake idea. The cake turns out AMAZINGGG and DELICIOUS my sister was obsessed with it. Only thing was the pickup location is close to Ridgewood which is kind of far from the city, but it was worth it!! Overall had a great, efficient experience with Sugar Sketch and would definitely come back for more custom cakes! read more

Sugar Sketch is amazing. We are from So Cal and took a girls only trip to NYC in April. It was my sisters 60th birthday and I wanted special New York themes cookies to celebrate the occasion. Not only were the cookies great tasting but the designs were awesome. I requested the cookies be delivered to our hotel near Battery Park and the instructions were followed perfectly. I highly recommend them. Thanks Martina! read more

My brother and husband got a custom cake made from here for my birthday and wow, it was amazing! My brother sent them a photo of a cartoon character I like and the cake was a perfect depiction of the character. The taste was amazing too and we enjoyed it for a few days after. Another tiny cupcake place on a quiet side street in the East Village (or maybe Alphabet City is more accurate). Contrary to the Yelp note that says it is temporarily closed, it actually is open as of today. The focus here is on those beautiful, giant, custom cakes, but they also make stuff for walk-ins, like cupcakes and other sweets, as well as a few savory options (though they are listed on the menu as being available after 10 AM, there was nothing ready at 12:30ish). They had samples out of some of their bars and cake pops, which were delicious, especially the Nutty Nutella Bar. Other than that though, you mostly have the cupcakes to choose from, which come in simple flavors, like red velvet, chocolate, vanilla, etc. ($3 each), or custom creations you can design yourself, or pick from among a list of 18 suggested combinations ($4.50 each). The custom cupcakes are pretty small for that price, and while they taste good, they are not particularly exciting nor different from what you can find at the several cupcake shops nearby. read more

Stopped in here earlier today. This cute little cupcake and sweets shop is relatively new. Though, their cake designs from both online and in their windows are insanely impressive. A giant tiered Pokemon cake greeted me in the shop as well as a molded turkey and pumpkin cake. Cupcakes frosted to appear as boquets of flowers. Adorable idea for weddings. I tried a cappuccino, their cupcakes, and most importantly their cheese clouds. If you do anything when you visit this spot - coffee is discounted early in the mornings - get the cheese clouds! Fluffy biscuity buns covered with cheese and stuffed with cheese, prosciutto, rosemary, and sea salt. My friend went more decadent with her coffee and ordered an iced macchiatto with nutella and fresh cream. It was extremely decadent but the fresh cream on the coffee is luxurious. Cupcakes are made not too sickenly sweet which I like. Very buttery and creamy. Nice fillings. I would go with the peanut butter and jelly combo, birthday cake, or smores cake. Intrigued by what Gianduja is and would have to come back for that one. It's a 30% hazelnut to chocolate ratio made popular in the Napolean age. Had to google it out of curiosity. Cupcakes are around $3-5, pending on how customized you want to go and if you go crazy it can get more expensive but typical for a solid bakery. Store owners and bakers were insanely friendly and made great recommendations. read more

FYI - this review is solely based on my custom cake experience with Martina. This is an excellent establishment - amazing quality, quick service and reasonable prices. I had a perfect experience with Martina when I was ordering my custom cake, and when I mean perfect...I mean perfect. It was my first time ordering a custom cake and Martina was so kind and patient throughout the whole process, talking me through options and making recommendations to what she thought would be best for my needs even if the outcome was cheaper on her end. I was looking for a custom cake for my boyfriend's birthday and ordered the 8 inch cake, in the shape of a panda face (which I emailed her a few days prior). The cost was $75, a fantastic price for a custom cake in the city and I know this because I did the research!! I workshopped a custom flavor combo with her too - coconut frosting, chocolate cake and rasberry filling (I wanted to do something a little different). The outcome was amazing and I never received so many compliments on a cake. It was moist, flavorful and the texture on the frosting and filling was perfect. Martina executed everything flawlessly from the experience to the appearance to the flavor. I highly recommend this Grade A establishment and I wouldn't go anywhere else for my next custom cake. It was nothing short of perfect, perfect...(and another one for good measure) perfect :) read more

This fantastic bakery is on my block and I kinda thought they only did cupcakes and other little baked goods until they started displaying their carved cakes in the window. I knew then they would be making my ridiculous "roast pig" wedding cake for my Luau themed wedding party. Martina was instantly accommodating and so easy to plan and work with. We chatted via a email, she sent me a few sketches, we bounced ideas back and forth, and then they executed and delivered the perfect cake (also enormous) to my venue with no hassle AT ALL. Sadly there was so much going on I never got to try it, but my guests that had the cake LOVED IT. Highly recommended bakery!! Thank you so much!! read more

I've been here a few times since the week they opened and each and every time I've been really happy with the quality of their baked goods and coffees. Prices recently also got adjusted so that's even more awesome, lol. Martina (owner and head baker) along with her assistant Christina are both really sweet and awesome. The space is small and welcoming with all their baked goods on display for the gawking. The cupcakes here are moist with perfect texture and all their frosting is housemade. Sugar Sketch's menu is also really diverse with a plethora of items that are sweet as well as savory - they even have gluten-free options too! Being more of a savory fan myself I am a HUGE fan of their cheese clouds. OOOOOOMG THEIR CHEESE CLOUDS YOU GUYS!! They come in classic rosemary cheese, prosciutto and cheese and their newest creation TRUFFLE CHEESE. Their classic was my favorite thing here but yesterday I tried their Truffle Cheese cloud and my life was forever changed. I also tried their Nutella Loaf yesterday and it's like a sweet bao bun cake stuffed with Nutella. I went NUTS over it! (Har, har - pun completely intended). Beverage-wise they've got cold brewed coffee, hot coffee, hot chocolate and all sorts of fancy dranks like their Nutella Macchiato. Yeah, I realized I mentioned 2 Nutella items...but what can I say, I love my hazelnut flavors, lol. Go here and go here soon, you won't regret it! read more

I tasted these cupcakes at the NYC Taco Showdown, and they were delicious! I had the red velvet and the strawberry, and although I liked the former more, both frostings (if that's the right word for it) were very creamy and not too sweet, just the right consistency. The red velvet was a lot more moist though for the actual cake part, and the fillings in both were a pleasant surprise. Overall very good cupcakes, but I'm not sure whether I'd be willing to pay the price per cupcake in the store. read more

This was the best cake experience I have ever had from start to finish! Martina understood what I was looking for and was super accommodating. My boyfriends 30th birthday cake cake out even better than I could've imagined. I always worry that cakes that look beautiful don't taste great, but was totally wrong here. We did a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting on the inside and it was delicious! Everyone kept telling me how delicious it was. After contacting 4 different bakeries and getting little to no response on their custom cakes, I decided to reach out to Sugar Sketch for help. From the very beginning Martina was a gem. Super easy to work with and helpful w/ her recommendations. I feel so happy writing this review because the cake turned out AMAZING! The cake was so flavorful, moist, buttery and so much more :) Needless to say, it was gone within minutes-I mean GONE. The cake really brought out the theme, which for the record was a cactus themed baby shower. I definitely recommend this bakery and will happily be a returning customer! read more

I ordered a beach theme sweet sixteen birthday cake for my daughters party and I can not say enough about it. Dear Martina, I cannot thank you enough for the amazingly beautiful and delicious display you put together for Sofia's baptism. Everything you did was executed with absolute perfection! You truly transformed the whole room. You took such a weight off my shoulders. To walk in and see every detail taken care of, it made my heart sing. :) The tables with the rose petals and gold dust were so elegant and looked even more breathtaking than I had imagined. My guests could NOT stop talking about the details on the desserts and THE CAKE...the cake was a HUGE hit, the flavors you put together were just the right amount of sweet to end our feast. The cake was hands down the BEST cake I have ever eaten. I got up at 12:40 am and ate 2 slices right out of the box in the refrigerator and then this morning another THREE with my coffee! Sad to say I bought 50 bakery boxes and would you believe only 10-12 were used?! To think how much time I spent picking out the most perfect bakery boxes with pretty scalloped edges for my guests to take home treats. I easily spent 3 hours before I chose one, only to donate them to the restaurant because my guests stuffed themselves. Between you and the restaurant chef, nobody will be able to button their pants today! I am amazed at how perfectly you were able to execute what I had envisioned. Thank you so much for making it such a memorable reception! xoxo Angela read more

As Mike C. mentioned and Briana's review reinforces, their doors are currently open (and not just serving 'Custom Cakes' per the categories on the listing), but perhaps the business set their official/grand opening date as the 'closed until' (it's currently soft open with 20% off 9/15-9/18, so perhaps there's a hiatus after that to prep for the full launch)*. I stopped by the afternoon of the 16th and the woman presumably behind the operation was cheerily chatting up another woman who I sure hope was a friend/family member/press, because she not only ignored my presence, but blatantly stood in front of the displays and the register at the moments I needed each most, to the point where I almost walked out. The cupcakes are as small as or smaller than any I've seen, and priced at $3 normally. If you want to add a few mini marshmallows or something from their 'signature creations', tack on another $1.50 (judging by the very sad display of these, you shouldn't do that). I realize they're soft open, but this place is currently a damn mess everywhere besides where customers walk/sit, presumably illuminating their custom cakes roots. The displays need some serious work (they're kinda dark/ugly and include seemingly-permanent 'display only' signs over some items https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/sugar-sketch-new-york?select=OZ6QlBWEEukMEQER54-OBA&reviewid=EQ3f-6FVyATldCN_eT9CBA ), and the wall menu doesn't match the current inventory (no pumpkin cupcake [yet], etc.). The build your own section includes the opportunity to craft your own frankencake and pay a lot for it. The bow around the box is fine, but I'd rather just get a larger/better cupcake. Samples were mediocre, too. Pretty bad choice for a loyalty system, offering nothing for what are likely their most popular purchases -- one coffee or one baked good -- because they don't meet the minimum, so it's easy to leave the POS frustrated because 'you earned 0 points' https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/sugar-sketch-new-york?select=Q7Loby1TQw_CK8n0CEgt_A&userid=8RcEwGrFIgkt9WQ35E6SnQ only to check your email to see "As a member of Sugar Sketch Rewards, you will earn 1 point for every $5 you spend and receive a $6 discount for every 60 points you redeem...Only 60 more points until your next reward." I've been here a few times for cupcakes and my experience has been hit or miss. The frostings and toppings are their saving grace because the cake itself can be dry or the flavor is off. I went today for their soft opening today and it is very cute inside, but pretty small. I had a latte and a red velvet cupcake. The cupcake was amazing and deserves all 5 stars - it was moist and the frosting was perfect. Unfortunately the latte wasn't quite hot enough but the flavor was good and I'm sure they will perfect their coffees with time. I will definitely use them the next time I need a sugar fix. And maybe try them when my birthday comes around for an entire cake. ***I went back and had another cupcake and gave them another shot at making a good latte and they totally rocked it, so they definitely get a 5 star rating from me! read more

Martina was so sweet and made some gorgeous cookies for me very last minute! Amazing experience!

I can't say enough about this bakery- but let me start by saying that Martina is seriously the nicest and most accommodating person I've ever met in the service industry. She did a last minute custom order for me and she put together this amazing mixed berry vanilla cake with almonds. So amazing- the butter cream was meringue and it was light and not too sweet- this cake... was. Wow. That dense type of cake that's more like an olive cake- it was truly spectacular and to have service like that in nyc... this place is truly a warm loving place that gives me all the feels. I had a delicious cappuccino at Sugar Sketch this past weekend. (Next time I'm getting some Emoji Cookies and hot tea:-)

Super friendly staff, great cookies, a surprisingly cheap/good coffee. Always a pleasant experience.

This place is AMAZING!! The cupcakes are the best ones I've ever had in this city. Try a "that's amore" with a coffee - it will change your life. The Italian cheese panini are amazing. The bread is perfectly salted and the prosciutto and cheese literally melt in your mouth. Not only is the food amazing - the chef/owner is the sweetest with a beautiful smile and cheerful disposition. She knows her stuff and is happy to share her story - which is delightful to hear while munching on a cupcake. This spot couldn't be a better place for this neighborhood. It's perfectly decorated inside - my fave is the Pokemon go on top :) the only sad part is that I no longer live in the neighborhood... But fear not - totally went in and bought several packages of beautifully decorated Halloween cupcakes to bring on the plane with me! Yes. It's that good. read more
