Sometime you just crave a cupcake!…read more Walking by this grab and go spot I peered in and saw they had Devil Dog cupcakes, a flavor blast from my childhood. Had to get one. it was ok and satisfied enough. Be aware that nothing is freshly baked at this tiny location and it is a bit pricey for what it is.

I recently picked up a box of four cupcakes for $15. At $3.75 a piece, it's a fair price for…read morespecialty treats that are as visually appealing as these were. While the presentation was 10/10 across the board, the flavors ranged from "nostalgic perfection" to "a bit of a letdown." Devil Dog (The Winner): This was by far my favorite. It was a trip down memory lane, perfectly capturing that nostalgic Hostess chocolate cupcake flavor I loved as a kid. Lemon Raspberry Meringue: Coming in a close second, this cupcake was bright, fruity, and incredibly fresh. It felt light and offered a great balance to the richer flavors in the box. Ube: This cupcake was stunning to look at. However, the flavor didn't quite live up to the exotic profile of a purple yam; it tasted like a traditional vanilla cupcake that just happened to be purple. Great for the aesthetic, but standard in taste. Hummingbird: This was the only real disappointment. I was expecting the signature tropical punch of pineapple, but it lacked that acidity. Instead, it felt more like a simple banana nut muffin with icing on top. Final Verdict: Overall, the experience was positive. The shop clearly has a talent for decor and nostalgia. I'd definitely return for the Devil Dog and the Lemon Raspberry, but I might skip the Hummingbird next time. Last Note: The woman working in the bakery was a bit rude and had an attitude and that alone will make me not com back no matter how good the cupcakes are.

I have been to this location of this bakery a handful of times, with their original spot on…read moreMadison. While I'm not the biggest cupcake fan, they have a nice selection of cakes, bars, and other things for pretty reasonable prices, especially in Midtown. The staff are also friendly. The most recent time, I got a Ube Buttercake Bar for $4.25, or something very similar. As per the name, it is made with ube, or purple yam, and it has a slight purplish hue. It was just a bit rich, had a soft texture inside, and had a very mild ube flavor with a bit of vanilla. The dessert was decent, but not strong enough of a ube flavor for me to buy it again. Much better was the Brookie I got the first time for $4.50 or so, listed as a blend of their Ooey Gooey Chocolate Chip Cookie Bar and Fudge Brownie. I was happy that the chocolate chip part was dark chocolate, and it wasn't overly sweet. Otherwise, it had a nice mix of textures, with some soft and crunchier parts. I liked it a lot more. The prices here are decent enough, and the quality isn't that bad. It's not a place I would go out of my way to go to, but it's nice to be nearby if I want to pick up a snack or something similar. I would probably try a slice of cake, or another bar such as their lemon or dream, next time.

Buttercup Bake Shop is my neighborhood bakery, and I appreciate that it stays open late. The…read morechocolate cake slice I purchased was moist and delicious. Unfortunately, the customer service was disappointing. The employee behind the counter did not greet us or offer any assistance while my friend and I looked at the display. When we decided on the chocolate cake, she sharply asked, "Which chocolate cake?" as though she were annoyed, so my friend had to walk over and point it out. The store was not busy, and both of us noticed the unfriendly attitude. The slice was also $7 and smaller than the portions I have received there before. For that price, customers deserve both a good product and welcoming service, especially since people often visit bakeries to celebrate happy occasions.
