I grew up on Mexican food and I don't expect this food to be at the same calibur as my grandmother's cooking but I expect my food to be hot and flavorful. For those who don't know, Huitlacoche is corn smut (or fungus) and is sooo hard to find in the states. Firstly.. The smallest tacos I've ever had at a restaurant and for $4.50 it's not worth it at all. The tacos came out on a room temperature tortilla that looked like it was placed right out the tortilla bag. The Huitlacoche was anything but..I've had Huitlacoche in Tijuana and while I don't expect this to be the same it is a faint and pathetic resemblance of what Huitlacoche is suppose to be. The queso was good and we enjoyed our drinks but the tacos were so mediocre and small it was incredibly disappointing. It seemed like they measured out an entire tablespoon of taco fillings for our small, 1 tortilla taco. Still can't get over the tortillas weren't at all cooked, no burn marks from being cooked, no warmth just a sad room temp tortilla. We aren't ones to return our food but we agreed it was the most disappointing meal we had in Pittsburgh. Our server seemed like she didn't want to be there. This is my fav taco place in the burgh! For me the street taco size is the perfect portion. I usually get 3 tacos to satisfy my appetite. This is even after the BEST guacamole that comes our fresh, with homemade chips. The queso is also a great appetizer option. With multiple locations across the US, Bakersfield is renowned for its take on Mexican Street food. We stopped in at the downtown Pittsburgh location while attending a conference at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. I called ahead to get a reservation for our group and was fortunate enough to get a same-day reservation. Bakersfield is one of the busier places in the downtown core, so be smart and book ahead. It's decisively large than it looks from the outside with high ceilings, a massive bar, a patio, and a lower level to accommodate more guests. We sat at a large booth at the back of the restaurant and luckily, right beside the bar. We ordered drinks which included tequilas, whisky, and some craft beers. We then moved on to several apps, but the one that stood out the most was the Short Rib Queso, made with braised short rib, pickled white onion, crema, radish, queso fresco, and cilantro. This was interesting and very good, and we ended up ordering two of them for the table. next up for the main course, our table agreed on the Selecciones De La Casa which is marketing as a multi-course experience designed for parties of 6 or more and they charge$18 per person. The Meal was a hit as we all got to try various tacos from the taco menu and some other dishes. This was a great experience and if you are a Taco lover then give Bakersfield a shot. read more

This was a recommendation from the server and was my favorite. 2. A POLLO DIABLO ($4) - chicken on a soft corn tortilla (arbol chili glazed chicken; chipotle lime crema, pickled white onion, queso fresco, radish, cilantro). This taco was good but I needed some hot sauce in my opinion. 3. An AL PASTOR ($4) - pork taco in a soft corn tortilla (chile marinated pork, pineapple, pickled white onion, cilantro). It came out looking the color of cheese, but that's where the similarities stopped. The texture was grainy and thick like hummus. The flavor was mostly nondescript. No spice. Definitely no cheese flavor. I've had vegan cheese that was more cheesy than their queso. I didn't see anything on the menu warning that the queso is non-dairy. If it is non-dairy, the menu should be crystal clear about it. If it does have daily in it, this place should feel very bad about what they've done. read more

I met friends at Bakersfield for dinner before a concert. To be honest, I was less than impressed with a few things there, but let's get down to the whole experience. When we (4 of the 6) arrived, we were seated at a high top table in the basement. The ambiance was nice - lots of wood and a cool table set up. Unfortunately, the temperature did not seem to be well-controlled. We were SO warm! Our waitress greeted us promptly but then did a few disappearing acts throughout the night. We all ordered different things. A few got tacos and let me tell you - they are TINY! At a bare minimum, you'd need to order 3 to have any bit of satisfaction in the meal. I ordered taquitos which were decent but also a small portion. For my drink, I chose the "Sunrise Spritz". I have never in my life sent a drink back but I sure did with this one. I couldn't handle more than one sip. It was sour and bitter at the same time. I was really in the mood for a strawberry margarita but there wasn't one on the menu. Our other two friends joined us a bit later and I'm happy to say that they were helped quickly. It took awhile to find our waitress for the bills. Since I only got the taquitos (luckily she had taken that drink off my bill), my bill was quite reasonable.
