For instance, advised that my daughter was shy when the kid hesitated to order one day, the barista brightened up even more and put the girl at ease. Whether their coffee is good or not is completely subjective. I think it's good overall, but it might not be my first choice in town. But it's made with care, and as mentioned, roasted in house. Its popularity speaks to its quality. They also have a very good selection of pastries and other goodies to accompany your coffee, including a Mobile institution--cheesecake from a local company called Cotton Blues. The only gripe I have about Carpe Diem is their seating setup. There simply isn't enough of it. That said, I don't know how they could use the space more efficiently, since the cafe is small as it is. I prefer more private seating, which in other coffee houses I've been to has been accomplished with the judicious use of plants or high-backed chairs. The biggest component of the crowded seating is due to students from Springhill College across the street. Today, for instance, my husband and I were unable to find any seating at all. Even on the days when we can find seating, being entirely surrounded by people working quietly on their laptops feels awkward and lends a library-like feel to the atmosphere. It feels rude to have a conversation at a regular level. I feel like I'm intruding. I don't know how a coffee shop should handle this conundrum, as it's really not good business practice to limit customers' time while there, or to turn away clientele, even in an attempt to please all of their customers. There is already a back room which seems to be an unofficial space dedicated to students, but the overflow still takes up much of the cafe. That said, I enjoy Carpe Diem and going there is a nice little treat. I would definitely recommend it.

The baristas were very friendly and welcoming and even informed us that their usual espresso shot was a double shot and asked if that was ok for us. Which was great because that would have been too much for us today and we were able to split the shot between us. The espresso was delicious with a delicate flavor of butter and dark chocolate. It had a slight bitterness to it, but not an over roasted or burned taste. The flavor changed as the shot cooled and was actually sweeter once cooled to room temperature which was surprising. Overall a great tasting espresso experience! We will definitely go back whenever we are in town and I look forward to trying their cinnamon rolls next stop in!

The Ladies here are as delightful as they come and the food is scrumptious! You will not be sorry whether you want something to eat or just a snack. You must try the chicken salad and the sweet and salty chocolate chip cookies. So very good. I will definitely be a regular at this place. read more

I wish that I could say that I was the one at our household who discovered Dropout Bakery, but I cannot. Instead it was my wife who, searching for someplace other than a supermarket to purchase a King Cake for our Mardi Gras celebration, found this fine bakery. Now, as I have never actually been to its location in downtown Mobile, it should be understood that this review is based solely on my experience with consuming their product. My wife learned that this bakery has an online ordering system, and that the product ordered through their website should be picked up the following morning. She further learned that, because of high demand, their in store product usually sales out within minutes of their opening each day. So as a first try she ordered a 6 inch King Cake, a small spinach quiche, and two petit-fours. The next morning she drove downtown and found, as she had learned it would be from online reviews, a long line to the bakery of customers waiting for the business to open. After going the long queue and finally upon reaching the interior, she found her online order waiting for her, separated from the other produce which was being quickly bought up by the customers in shop. This small business simply does not yet have the manpower or equipment to produce enough product to last beyond one day. Which is a good thing for customers who insist on same day freshness. The quiche and petit-fours did not survive long enough for me a get a photograph of each, but I did manage to get a photo of the King Cake, which I have included in this review. Finally, we found each item to be superbly delicious and very much worth the effort. We will be back again soon in order to sample more of their product, especially their larger King Cake when Mardi Gras season rolls around again next year.

She had the audacity to argue with me, saying that she was not rude and that she remembered speaking with me. She became incredibly defensive, saying that she was not curt in anyway and that I was wrong. She finally apologized, and when I said thank you and that I still wanted to conduct business with her, she just said with utmost attitude "well then, do you even want to come in then?" WHAT EVEN!? I felt like I was in the twilight zone and was sent back to some sort of high school drama. This is the type of business that gives women owners a bad name! I am so disappointed because I was looking forward to using them for our large wedding regardless of the tasting. If this is the way their business is conducted I do not foresee this business lasting much longer. DO NOT GO HERE! Just because she did AJ McCarron's engagement cake doesn't give her the right to conduct poor business. Please, do yourself a favor and go elsewhere. When you're in the throws of wedding planning the last thing you want to deal with is awful customer service.
