I wish I could give zero stars. We ordered a birthday cake from this bake shop a week and a half in advance of our party. We even called and emailed to confirm everything was good--multiple times. They assured us it was. Then, on the day we scheduled for pickup (a Saturday, aka the day of the party), we drove out of our way to get the cake... and it wasn't even made. They completely LOST our order. We had already paid in full and showed them the receipts, yet they offered no real solution. Barely an apology, just "we can offer you a free cake or a refund," which I still haven't received, by the way. They said it would take a few business days, but honestly, with how this place operates, I'll probably have to go in and ask for cash--which they'll likely "forget" about too. And the most ridiculous part? Before even offering a refund, they said they could have it ready by Tuesday. TUESDAY. Like... what? Why would we have scheduled a specific Saturday pickup if we didn't need it that day? That's when the party was! The logic is just unreal. They didn't try to fix it, rush it, nothing. I understand mistakes happen, but we triple-checked with them. For a bakery to forget to make a cake--after confirming it--is completely unacceptable. Total disappointment. The customer service here was terrible. Not only did they mispell the name on the birthday cake that I ordered, when I brought it to the young lady's attention, she looked at me with a scowl. Then, she told me that I am "too old to have an attitude". I won't be going back. She said she was "trying so hard not to get smart with" me. But she was the one selling me a cake with a mistake. I've been going out of my way to Pollman's for as long as I've can remember. I'm my opinion they've got the best donuts to be had! I always get my birthday cakes from them. The people who work there are always very nice and helpful to their customers. The cases are always full with a huge variety of sandwiches, salads, cookies, cupcakes, donuts, desserts, and especially the cakes. Here's hoping the current owners keep up with the same quality and traditions as the Pollman family has since it began in 1918. read more

Very friendly staff, she gave me a sample of king cake, which was tasty and moist. I ordered a cheese danish, and it was good. They sell Plugta European salted butter, which I have not heard of. I went today for the Yelp event (drove two hours from my location). The lady who attended to me was super kind and very attentive. I couldn't see her face because of her mask, but I felt like she was smiling the whole time. They were quite busy, but all of the staff seemed very friendly. I ended up ordering two cupcakes (one was of Santa and the other was a snowman). They were both super cute! Although I absolutely love how they looked, the cupcakes themselves weren't bad, but weren't amazing either. I will say that maybe they were like that due to them maybe sitting in the container area for a while. Any how the brownie, cookie, and the other dessert that they had given us was super delicious. The customer service here is awful. The new owner/manager sets the tone with a "take it or leave it" attitude. I used to be a long time patron for the "edible image" cakes and Pollman's unique flavor. But they have messed up my last few orders, and had to redo them overnight. Last straw for me was a cake I picked up today - yesterday, they forgot to add the edible image I paid for. The remade cake with the image said "Happy Birmthday (clear M instead of R), was shorter horizontally than the standard ¼ sheet cake - confirmed by the owner (the defective cake yesterday was the right size). The owner basically said "take it or leave it." (I called before picking up the cake yesterday and was told by the counter person I ordered from the previous day that she looked at it and it was correct with the image - so person lied, never looked at cake b/c image was not on cake when I arrived to pick it up. IMO Pullman's owners and staff absolutely do not care about retaining long term customers. Patronize another business if you want a specialized cake, or if you care about customer service. read more

So. My wife and I got married in Mobile at the end of March this year. My mother and Grandmother contacted Pollmans Bakery around the new year to construct the grooms cake for the wedding. We had provided a simple image of a Stratocaster style guitar and provided clear instructions for the color change and for an Alabama A to be just frosted on in the corner. They accepted the work with a provided date of completion for the 29th of March. What we got was horrendous. The original cake was late, it was rejected. They then came back with a "second cake" around 45 minutes later. The delivery driver arrived and banged on the front door of the Ezell House loud enough to DISRUPT our ceremony. My mother emailed her contact with the bakery requesting compensation that we deserved. We understand the reputation and significance of Pollmans Bakery but it seems they do not. They initially offered a 75% refund that would be processed immediately. Which didn't happen. My mother had to reach BACK OUT to them only for them to try to haggle their way out and offer excuses to why this occurred and lie about baking a second cake. I have baked a cake before it is physically impossible to bake and frost this type of cake within that time frame. Lets just say it was a second cake. It tasted like garbage and no one ate any. Over 70 guests and NO ONE LIKED IT. We originally paid $433 dollars for the cake. The refund promised was $324.75. They initially then offered a mere $100 to try to weasel their way out and save money after they nearly ruined my wife and I's big day. We are happily married and life goes on. BUT we will never forgive Pollmans "Bakery" for their ineptitude for constructing a cake and customer service. read more

I was introduced to Pollman's many years ago by my in-laws. Do they have anything there that I dont like? Around Christmas time everyone in town knows Pollman's is the place to go and you know it because they are so busy that they can barely keep up. I almost feel bad for them being so busy but I'm very grateful to bring home some Christmas treats for my family! You must get some Santa Claus cookies. They are one of the oldest Christmas traditions in my house that will continue for years to come. And of course, who doesn't love some petit fours? A little bite sized chunk of cake ,iced on all sides, with a cute design on top of each one. In my pictures you will see the Christmas wreath but they have different designs for all occasions. For a special celebration throughout the year, we love the chocolate doberge and the strawberry doberge! This is the only place I have ever gotten it and I am spoiled for life! What is it about the doberge that I like so much? The rum flavored icing on the chocolate one has a really different taste that is very delightful and the fruit filling in the strawberry takes the cake! The cake was for a 50th wedding anniversary. This means it is something special. A lot of expectation. Well let me tell you, not only did the cake come just as requested, it was probably one of the best cakes I've had in my 47 years on this planet. They nailed it. Absolute Perfection. Just used to the cupcakes with the " hard" icing that was perfect for little guys. It was always true bakery cup cakes that were a signature of Pollmans. ( Not what you get at Publix & every where) I had a lot of leftovers that were messy in the heat. read more

We've been ordering birthday cakes from our office from this location for a while. The cakes are always moist and delicious. The chocolate doberge and the caramel are office favorites. My husband and I went a couple of weeks ago to pick up the king cake for the parade tailgate. The place is totally vintage, in the coolest way possible! I love the sign above the door. The interior is set up like an old school bakery, complete with a display in the center of the room, a cooler for sandwiches, and displays of cookies and petit fours. There are a few little tables in the bakery if you want to grab lunch and enjoy it there. Oh and about that king cake... it was amazing! The original owners of this bakery claim to have baked the first king cakes in Mobile with the recipe they brought with them when they migrated here from France. The business owned and operated by their ancestors. The prices are very reasonable and the service is extremely friendly and efficient. You can't go wrong with Pollman's! read more

I have to say, I wish I had longer so I could enjoy all the amazing treats they had to choose from. This is obviously a Mobile staple and has been around for a long time for a reason. What a great place to get a "King Cake". They are the original maker of the pastry here in Mobile. Their bread pudding is outstanding and something that I remembered getting 22 years ago when I lived in Mobile back then. The service is amazing as well and the owners and management go out of their way to make sure that the customer is taken care of 100% of the time. It reminds me of the all the great things we like about small towns in the south with the immigrants who built them with the bakeries and butcher shops. If you want great service with a great pastry then I can 100% recommend that you go by there and spend a few minutes picking up the things you want. Especially for Mardi Gras celebrations. read more

My grandfather ordered a loaf of Pollman's French bread every weekend when I was a child. It is still my favorite.

Throughly disappointed in the service for a recent order I placed with Pollmans Bakery. I was told I HAD to purchase $50 of the same cookie for them to make this particular cookie. So I did. Paid for them up front as they requested. They were to be ready the next day at 2. No one bothered to call (yes they had my number) and let me know not to waste my time driving an hour to the bakery to get something that didn't exist. I was told they were too busy making king cakes to fullfill my order. I thought if you made a special order that should be fulfilled before making non pre-ordered items. I was refunded and left very upset. Called afterwards and was then promised to have them at my nieces house this morning before my flight left to travel back home. I really didn't expect them to fulfill their promise since they didn't make the pre-order in the first place. They called this morning to tell me they would NOT be able to fulfill my order for the 2nd time. I would be very cautious ordering with them. You too may show up to an empty promise. I went today and bought a dozen rolls and a dozen brownies. The total charge was $19.12. I was blown away how expensive this was. I understand they are trying to make a comeback after being shut down by the health dept for unsanitary conditions. Now they closed 2 other stores and the Broad Street store is the only one in operation. I was trying to help them out but the price is horrendous and they are trying to rip customers off. My mother has been going here since the 1940's, she brought home Pollman's lemon puffs since I was a kid. On return to Mobile I stopped in to buy a few lemon puffs and some shaved ham. Below is a pic of the lemon less puff, absolutely no lemon filling inside, what happened to the powered sugar on top, the ham was not shaved. Mr. Pollman of the 60's and 70's was still around. Sadly, would never recommend to a friend. I needed a cake on a Wednesday and I called a week ahead of time. The employee told me to call on Friday and to make sure my order was in by that weekend. When I called Friday, they told me to call on Monday. On Monday I called and told them what I wanted (2 days before needing the cake) and the girl laughed at me and said that if I want a good cake I shouldn't have waited so long and I should have called earlier in the week. She gave the phone to someone else and the girl was very nice and told me to email what I wanted done and she would make sure it got done by Wednesday. This is the most pathetic excuse for a business I have ever seen. A majority of the employees are absolutely useless and don't even get me started on the owner/decorator/manager. She is incredibly unprofessional. The only reason this place is still open is because it accepts food stamps. I had an awful experience with a $70 cake I ordered for my sons birthday party. I placed the order at the old shell location, it was made at the midtown location and transported (by Pollman's) back to the old shell location for me to pick up. While I was ordering the cake I overheard an upset customer. She was there to pick up a cake she had preordered and they just completely forgot her cake. They weren't apologetic and still made her pay full price for a display cake. I should've walked out then. Fast forward to Friday at 12.. my mom went to get the cake for me, the employee showed her the cake and said "it's kind of messed up." My mom then brought the cake to me that had finger prints and smudges all over it. When I called to ask why I just spent $70 on a cake with fingerprints they then said I can make the 30 minute drive back to them so they can fix it (even though they clearly seen the mistake before it was handed over) or I could bring the cake back and get my money back.... this was a hour before the party. I said no and I wanted to speak to the owner who was the one who suggested I bring it back but suddenly she had left. They said the owner would call me back when she returned later that afternoon.. well it's Sunday and no word back. I'm furious and so upset. I will make sure I tell EVERYONE about my experience. read more

This place is so nostalgic for me. When I was a kid, we'd stop by here to pickup sandwiches and chips for field trips early in the morning. Their po-boys are simple but the ingredients are are what make it. My favorite is their roast beef po-boy. The roast beef is some of the best meat you can find anywhere. The bread is chewy with a crispy crust. Their sweets are way too sweet for me but seem to be popular. The locations are small and haven't been updated in years which add to the old hole in the wall mom and pop nostalgia.
