We have been on a cruise ship for the last 10 days without any Mexican or spicy food. After our ziplining adventure, we wanted fish tacos. There was only one person working the truck, so it took a long time to order and a long time to get our tacos. That aside, the tacos had fresh fish that did not taste fishy and was cooked well. Taste was better than the fish tacos we get in Seattle in most places. Fresh, light and not fried! The reason we didn't rate them a 4 is because they were $5.50 each which is higher than average. The food truck area is very clean and tidy, plenty of seating. Friendly service, simple and easy. The bad... I almost forgot where this truck was located since it'd been 2 years since we came here. The ugly... None. What we had... 2 orders of the fish tacos. The plate comes with 2 tacos, no sides, for $10. Pay $2 more for rice and beans, we didn't, but doesn't mean you need to do what we did. Last I remembered, the sides weren't bad at all! Return again? Most definitley! Easy place to go to for some street grub in old Koloa. I'm surprised by the haters here...i only wish i had found this truck earlier in my trip! Yes - a taco plate is 10 bucks...to compare this with all of the other plate lunches in Koloa area I think it's right on par. I spent about the same at Koloa fish mkt, Seoko's snack shop, Savage shrimp...all of these are about $10 bucks a pop more or less. We stopped here at 10:45 the other day on the way to the airport. I don't think he actually opens until 11:00 but he cooked it right up for me which i really appreciated. Now to get back to the food - I had been on the hunt for fish tacos for the entire week I was in HI and these were the best I had. Super flavorful fish with some real spice to it. Love that he puts guac on the tacos too because I feel like that had been lacking everywhere else. These tacos were really messy and delicious but were the perfect quick light meal for me. Ordered the two fish tacos. I should have listened to my instincts when I arrived. I was the only person there (it was noon), there was a foul stench in the air, and lots of flies. A few people did arrive after I left. After about 10 minutes, I got my two tacos and there wasn't anything special about them. The portions were small, the fish was slightly undercooked, and they were bland in taste. They also didn't taste "right" so I'm hoping I don't sick in a few hours. My fish taco was tough, chewy and tasteless. Quite frankly, Baja Fresh does a better fish taco than these guys at half the price. Almost $6 for one fish taco is total robbery. These guys should rename themselves to Costco Tacos as I saw two giant tortilla chip bags sitting in the passenger seat of their truck. Everything (guacamole, sour cream, salsa, cabbage, tortilla chips and the tortilla) tasted like they got it from Costco. Came here two times during my two weeks stay in Kauai. My return was due to their delicious fish tacos! I have to say, I had fish tacos from about 5 different places during my stay and this place is fighting for my number one spot. The sauces used were really tasty and not too overpowering. Price is right too! Some places charge the same amount for one taco. Here you get two(: I have to make a note that the fish used it WALU. Also known as escolar or ono. This fish is extremely rich and buttery in texture. It's tasty as all get out but do take note that it can bother some peoples tummies. Don't be confused that you were poisoned or there food is bad, it's just the nature of that fish. I personally didn't have a problem! But some might. Chalupas is one of the very few food trucks here on Kauai. But, unlike your typical food truck, don't expect to find this truck driving around the island doing service, or any food truck on the island for that matter. On Kauai, the words "food" & "truck"seem to just refer to the facility in which they do their service. It doesn't even leave the lot with the owner at the end of the day like you would normally expect. That aside though, the food is pretty good. They specialize in tacos, burritos, & quesadillas. But, also serve other Mexican favorites. The service is just as great as the food. The guy that runs the truck is really nice. He even offered to make nachos for me which I happened to be craving when I went there, but it's not one of the regular menu items. This place is definitely worth every star I just gave them. The lack of a 5th star is only because of the prices. It's a bit on the expensive side (for a food truck, at least), ranging between $8 and $12 a plate. But, that's just the opinion of a college student on a budget...definitely still worth a try. read more

I might have an obsession with food trucks that is less than healthy and I patronize these small businesses whenever possible. I ate at Chalupas on July 8th when I was on a family vacation on Kauai. I guess I am spoiled by outstanding food trucks and Mexican food that is found in California because I found this place to be a disappointment. I ordered the garlic shrimp and chips with salsa and guacamole. The garlic shrimp came with Spanish rice and Mexican slaw. The rice and slaw were nearly flavorless, but the shrimp were well cooked and loaded with tons of delicious garlic. The chips were pretty much stale, the salsa water-like, and the guacamole was a smooth, bland paste. Not sure what other Mexican food is available on Kauai, but you might want to look elsewhere. Also, the shrimp, chips, and a soda were about $18.00 and not worth it. Take a pass and see what else Kauai has to offer. Aloha! read more

I wasn't sure what to expect from this little neon green food truck. I'm still trying to wrap my head around eating Mexican food in Hawaii. This was outstanding!!! My pregnancy cravings have been for Mexican food with a bit of that spicy kick. I opted for the shrimp quesadilla. Insanely good. Huge succulent bites of shrimp, tons of rich flavors. Best fish tacos ever! Great drinks too! Prices are fair. They include what seems like homemade chips too. We needed a light lunch and this was perfect! We both got the fish tacos, even though we were both hesitant about Mexican food coming from San Diego. This food truck did NOT disappoint - if you've never had Baja, MX style fish tacos, get them here. We had marlin - fresh, made to order. The white sauce was spot on, the corn tortillas were warm, and the salsa had kick. I felt like I was back in SD eating fish tacos at the beach. Tacos were good, but I'm not sure I'd give them "best in Hawaii" designation. Decent portion of well-cooked fish and shrimp. They were underseasoned but filling. What I didn't love was my interaction with Miguel, the owner. He was rather rude to me and the young lady working the window. I ordered the plate as a "combo" with rice and beans. I gather from his comments that he does not like customers referring to this as a combo plate, because he barked back not to offer it as a combo to customers. He also mis-heard my order so we ended up with only one plate of tacos instead of two. Rather than risk further upsetting him I took it as a chance to try one of the other trucks that also share the parking lot (we went with Thai). For around $15 with rice and beans, the prices here are a bit high, but it's consistent with Kauai prices. This is not a bad option in Koloa. I'd also try Taco Libre around the corner. read more

Best food on Kauai! Literally. We enjoyed Miguel's place for two meals and tried to go back for a third but he was closed. We ate at a range of restaurants from Ruth's Chris steakhouse to the Beachhouse to middle of the road places and just enjoyed the legit Mexican food from this food truck in a pleasant outdoor spot. The thing is when coming from San Jose, California I keep expecting this delicious Mexican taco that is full of flavor and fresh salsa choices, but this place didn't have what it takes for a 4+ Sammy review. I was glad to have tried it though! They give you some tortilla chips on the side with no salsa and when you ask for some, it literally comes in the sample size cups that is fit for a mouse. I'm in Hawaii reviewing a Mexican taco truck, so this shouldn't be a big surprise. The fish tacos have great fish but are... ok. They lack flavor or flare or... anything exciting. The rice and beans (pinto) are totally bland. Get the Thai rice from the food truck next to this place for better rice! The prices are typical for Hawaii, which is to say high. $10 gets 2 soft tacos, which would cost ~$3 and taste much better in CA. My son had beef & cheese tacos and loved it, but he loves bland. We ended up at Chalupas on our trip to the grocery store to stock up on some stuff for our time share condo. I'm a huge fan of food trucks at home, so I was excited to see what the Food Truck scene in Hawaii was like. 3 of us had the fish tacos, one went for the Shrimp Diabolo. We were all really happy with the food. The guy who runs the truck is really nice. He even honestly told us that if we wanted Garlic Shrimp, to come back another dayand visit the Savage Shrimp truck instead. The fish tacos were moist, had nice toppings (claw, crema, guac.) The sauce on the Shrimp Diabolo was awesome! After we finished our tacos, we used our chips that came with the tacos to mop up the leftover sauce! Granted, this was essentially our first meal on the island, and we had little to compare it to...but we were all really happy with what we got. read more

It's a food truck, so don't expect atmosphere or immaculate settings, but the food is great! We had the chipotle chicken tacos, shrimp diabla, and shrimp burrito. The tacos had cabbage, instead of lettuce, which added to the crunchy texture. Flavorful chicken, with some salsa, and a touch of crema. The burrito was filled with rice, shrimp, and delicious beans. Thankfully no sour cream. The shrimp diabla was spicy and tasty. I used the leftover sauce on the leftover burrito.
