Boat box restaurant is a hidden gem. We came for lunch on their last day of the season. I ordered the fried flounder sandwich served on a brioche bun with the aoili on the side which came with fries. This was absolutely delicious. My husband got the harvest salad with crab, also delicious. It had spring greens, roasted butternut squash, a gorgonzola apple cider vinegar dressing with copious warm crab. We ate every bite, the food was so delicious. The service was so kind and hospitable and warm. What a beautiful space and ambiance! There was live music outside! read more

It's a solid okay, my fish tasted frozen, had that fishy taste you can't get rid of, but my fathers scallops were tasty. Our server seemed to be brand new, forgot a drink for one of the kids and took awhile to get it; things like that continued. Atmosphere is low key and i think the bar (in another section from the dinning room) is probably the money maker, seemed that local people come here often to drink. The decor is minimal. I had to put one star unfortunately this place is a$$ the blonde trying to advertise food doesn't know her left from her right couldn't manage to put my simple food bill on my tab and continued to bit$h about me closing my bar tab and reopening so she could get 20% gratuity she would have gotten a tip if she just brought me my food with out an attitude, I gave her a different card just for food so I didn't have to do the absolute extra just for a drink that boiled her top so.. I came into the Bait Box for lunch with a friend before the season really launched, in late April. My friend and I had drinks and food at the bar. Firstly, I love the location, I get that it's a stopping point for boaters but I really enjoy the SJ back road drive out there and will have to do it again on a warm summer day. My friend and I both had smash burgers. We split a Bavarian pretzel and my friend had a cup of seafood chowder. The burgers were just okay, it was much fatter than a smash burger lol. And not very flavorful. The Bavarian pretzel was very yummy but could use another sauce, maybe a sweet sauce. And my friend and I agreed that the seafood chowder was also just okay. Food wise, the pretzel was the highlight for us both. Again though, this place was just getting started for the season and thus I believe they were trying out some new menu items. I had a Guinness to drink, which always pleases me. My friend ordered two different beers that they didn't have in stock, finally he settled on a Budweiser. I think again, they were likely just in the process of stocking up for the season. I'll need to return here when they're in full swing and reassess. But I do love the location and atmosphere alone, being a SJ girl that grew up on boats. Our bartender did just fine and obviously knows all the locals. read more

Can't say anything about the food. We waited over 20 minutes to order our drinks - tea and soda - finally after 25 minutes we walked out without ordering our meals. Never did get our drinks. Maybe just the waitress - hope so. It was not crowded- maybe 5 tables. Menu looked appetizing- not sure if we will give it a chance considering the drive and it's off-the-path location. My husband and I just discovered Bail Box this summer and we have enjoyed two wonderful dinners there. We love the setting on the lovely Cohansey River, and the atmosphere is casual and summery. It is always nice to get away to a waterfront. The restaurant has a very nice menu and their fish dishes are always generous with the fish portion. For example, their crab cake is mostly crab, not filler. We hope to get there again in September. Service is very prompt and friendly. I recommend the shrimp cocktail! read more

My favorite local place for a an evening by the bay. Selection of food not as large as some restaurants, but the is enough for most people to find something. Burgers are super. The bar outside is a repurposed boat, and there are fire rings with seating. View of the River is beautiful. Caution though- if you go on a day where there is a flat price buffet for mother's day, there are no other food offerings. If it's a holiday, check first. read more

The crabcake sandwich had a fresh roll, fresh lettuce tomato and red onion, but the crabcake had a strong fishy smell and was soggy and mushy. My husband had clams and linguine , pasta was dry not enough sauce and clams were not too fresh. They need to revamp their menu with a few items that are fresh and taste good. Ninety dollars for a lunch that really was substandard. The location and staff are winners but the downside is the menu choices. We would go back for a drink at the bar but not for the food. I have been meaning to go here forever. It is a little bit of a hike from East Vineland but the drive is scenic when you are on the approaching back roads. Our server was very attentive. We went on Sunday 10.23 at an odd time probably around 2pm in the afternoon so we were almost the only people in the restaurant. We had the malt vinegar fries with garlic aioli. We had two glasses of wine. We had the crab cake sandwich and the crab imperial. I have never had an imperial before that did not have a cream sauce base so that threw me off. It was well seasoned and buttery so I have no complaints about it. The views from the restaurant are relaxing and it is nice eating near the water. This is a nice place although remote, it is a gem. We ride out here occasionally, the reason for 4 stars instead of five is the price of the food and drinks is expensive. The food is delicious but again the price point is too high for the quantity received. Tish was a great bartender and the outside bar is cool, even on a hot day. I think it is (Lindsay) outside, bad with names. But she is awesome, great friendly bartender. If they lower their prices or up their portions, this will be 5 stars. read more

Had my hopes up for some blue claw crabs and when we got there at 5:15 they were only serving "salad" cold crabs. I never had them and wanted the ones with old bay. My mom had the salad crabs and I tried some claws and they were good. I got the snow crab clusters and they were very small. I had to ask for melted butter. read more

Slow service from the first drink. I do hate that for that first one, especially since I was parched. Unfortunately, they either weren't coming fast enough or there was too much ice and not enough drink, since I felt parched the rest of the night. I am not a fan of the Summer Kiss cocktail with watermelon vodka. The recipe did call for water--a little too much for my taste. Of course I loved the Pineapple Bomb with SoCo and amaretto. The crab dip was excellent, served with warm tortilla chips. I wish I could say the same for the burger, but since he didn't ask how I like it cooked, I got an over cooked piece of meat. At a hundred and fourteen bucks before tip for three, one non-alcoholic, the bar fare was a little steep for me. Very cute set up! Gives a little vacation vibe. Drinks were good, owners were very nice. Since it is on the water, there are some flies and other bugs, but it wasn't unbearable. The owner brought us bug spray and a candle to keep them away, and they had outdoor fans running to help. They also had corn hole boards set up which was fun. Beautiful sky view too as the sun set! This used to be my favorite place to go to eat. But ever since new management took over, it has become a totally different restaurant experience. When they say their menu is limited (no dessert options either) you better believe it. Before the menu was full of delicious seafood options at amazing prices. Now under the new management, you have your choice between crab, crab and more crab. The rest of the options are limited to any other boring burger joint's menu, with a piece of overcooked meat for good measure. The portions are small but don't worry-- what they lack in portions they make up for in their insane prices. As for the staff, they tried to be nice but they obviously have no idea how to run a restaurant (as already evident by their bizarre menu). Everyone there was about 19 years old and seemed like they were more concerned about gossiping and flirting than doing their job. I was hesitant to write this review because I didn't want to give these guys a hard time since they are obviously new to this profession. So I hope they take this review (and the many other negative ones they've been receiving lately on other social media sites) as constructive criticism before they lose their business and drive what was once an extremely popular place to eat straight into the ground. I suggest you get back in contact with the previous owners and learn how to do things they way they did them before it's too late. And honestly this really isn't even about comparing the new management to the old-- it's really just a bad place to eat in general. Menu selection is ridiculous, the prices and portions are laughable, the actual taste of the food is mediocre at best, and the staff is unprofessional to say the least. read more

My wife and I ate at the Baitbox on 5/18/19. We are long time patrons of the Baitbox and have been going there since it was a screen porch. The last 2 times we've been here the food quality has slipped. This last visited they didn't even have crab cakes on the menu? It appears the cook has taken the easy route and orders everything from a supplier rather than go through the trouble to locally source items for his menu from farmers and Baymen in the area. It would have been nice to see locally sourced asparagus instead of the over cooked vegetable medley that was served. A nice locally caught sea bass instead of a farm raised salmon or local mussels and oysters?? But sadly none of that was available in an area rich with locally items to serve. Maybe someone will be see this post and think farm to table instead freezer to table? read more

Hancock Harbor Marina is an off the beaten path marina on the Cohansey River in Greenwich, NJ. It has a Futuro house (designed by the Finnish architect Matti Suuronen in the late 1960s) on its property. Weird and intriguing place. There is also a seasonal restaurant called the Bait Box. I am not so enthusiastic about the restaurant. I had a burger which was actually quite good but I am not a fan of soft sweet pillowy rolls and the french fries were absolutely mediocre. A bit overpriced at $13 as well. Too bad, this really is an interesting place. read more

This place is a little hard to find but worth the trip. The shrimp and crab soup is delicious! The service is excellent but your food does take a little time to come out. Atmosphere is great! Changed over the last few years from great seasonal seafood to a bar food hang out for the younger set. No longer the place to go after church for a big dinner. Beautiful if you can sit at the outdoor bar on a September evening, overlooking the Cohansey River. This is what the Delaware Bayshore offers. The food is quite good, though the outdoor bar has a limited menu. Indoors is also quite nice, sitting by the windows, with occasional live music that complements, and doesn't overwhelm, dinner. Good for a quick visit to the bar, or committing to a seafood dinner. read more

I chose to go to this place out in the middle of nowhere cus of their crab fries. What a disappointment. The fries weren't fresh tasting, only had a few small pieces of crab meat on them and are WAY OVERPRICED. I felt totally jipped and upset that I even ordered them (my friend with me also ordered them and felt the same way). The crab bisque was yummy but again, overpriced. We also got the Bug Juice and Delaware cocktails and they were pretty good. However, my friend's had way too much liquor and mine not enough. Our bill was $84 with tip and neither of us even ordered an entree. Finally, their menu is way too small and not enough choices. We will not be returning. I gave only 2 stars because of how disappointing the crab fries were. read more

It took almost 20 min to get a glass of water and a beer. I understand that there was a large table; however, there were 3-4 waiters plus a bartender (no one at the bar) in the building for service. The Bait Box has been a local jem for a very long time. Open seasonal and I haven't been their since I was a child. I have been wanting to go back for the longest time, but it just never synced up. in hearing that they'd obtain a liquor licence and were going to try to stay open all year, I was very optimistic. So my husband and I along with a cousin from out of state, take the lovely trip out to Hancock Horbor. The restaurant was clean and very nicely decorated for Halloween. At twenty after one the dinning room was empty, except for the couple who came in at the same time as us. The food: crab balls- I've had better form Mrs Paul's. crab and shrimp dip- tasted nothing but an overpowering cheese! Served with a uncut hard bagette, no knife, no spoon. Had to tear apart the bread and use your fork to share the dip. chicken wings- 8 really sad little wings- $12.50! [I think they were from pigeons not chickens] My husband and cousin ordered cheeseburgers@$10.25 each! Wasn't asked or told that that was all you were getting. A frozen hamburger pattie, a piece of chesse, a stale roll, a few French fries and a pickle spear. The waiter(wanabee) could have asked do you want LTM, onions, etc. he could have asked about condiments...wow, $10.25! Now, my crabcake sandwich- OMG! I actually asked if was homemade, he claimed it was. Again Mrs Paul's is a whole lot better and cheaper! $13.00 Oh and don't get me started on what they call tarter or cocktail sauce, it is embarrassing what they served up! Unfortunately from our experience and from reading others, I don't foresee this place staying open long! They're overpriced tiny menu of things that you can buy better in the freezer dept of the Acme. They need to retrain their wait-staff, fire their cook and start over! The menu is very small with little options.Crabcake sandwich is very good.I got the wings which were listed as a pound of wings but had 8 sad little wings brought out to me.Crab and shrimp dip was ok but would be better with melba toast instead of the hard baguette they serve with it.No dessert options.The beer is priced weird at $4.21 a pint.My rum runner was way over priced at over $11.00 which is ridiculous in this area.Waitress was friendly but very slow service being there were only 8 people there on a Sunday afternoon.Only 1 bathroom with 1 toilet for men and women each which can make for lines at the bathroom and long waits.If they add more to the menu and drop there mixed drink prices a bit I may return but other than that I see no reason to go back and drive all the way there when I can get the same at the Green Olive in Hopewell with more food options and better service. read more

One of the worst meals I've ever had... I chose shrimp and scallops which consisted of 4 scallops and 3 shrimp for $31. The scallops were overdone to the point where they weren't even edible and the shrimp as well was over done. I would never go back to this place. read more

The food was very good. I had halibut and it was as good as you'd get in a fine dining restaurant. There is a boat outside that is a bar and also one inside. Cool place to have a drink on a nice day. Head there by boat on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon with a few friends. By boat it is an easy scenic ride up the Cohansey River, with Bald Eagles sitting along the trees at the rivers edge. Docking does seem somewhat limited for restaurant patrons, but that is common at most places along the water. Now to the dining experience at this beautiful location. The server sat us promptly and had our drinks on the table within minutes. The girls had a mix drink which was well balanced. The guys had tap beer, which was cold and refreshing. We ordered our wings, which are unbreaded with the hot sauce. They came out and where quickly eaten by our party. Everyone thought the sauce was tasty and not hot, but spicy. Very much enjoyed them. We all opted for the Prime Rib Cheese steak, which each couple split. They seem to be a little pricy for the area at $19, but are large enough to feed two people. The roll is a seeded, delicious hard torpedo style roll. The Prime Rib was cooked perfectly to my liking. It was juicy, and seasoned properly. I would recommend this wether you eat it yourself or share. Finally the outside area. We sat down in the provided. Hairs by the corn hole boards. Someone had their well behaved Boston Terriers running around unleashed. This was fine with all of us, being they were well behaved. Only thing I saw that might bother some, not us particularly was a guy who obviously had to much alcohols to drink. He wasn't being offensive, other than talking about Big Balls loudly. Even though this didn't bother us, nor did we complain to anyone, I feel the bar tender maybe should have stepped in. I know my parents and their friends would have taken offense and it may make them choose other places to eat. That being as it may, we will be returning again by boat. Went back again to Baitbox after a late afternoon sail. The outside was packed with a band playing, fire pit blazing, and cornhole boards being enjoyed. Went inside to eat and couldn't hear any of the events going on outside, even though we sat next to the window overlooking the harbor. Not going to much into food ordered same as last time. Been there a few times. Food has always been "ehh". However we tend to give places a chance over and over again because, well everyone has "off" days. But this evening was a bit much! First I'd like to say our server was great. She did all she could to help us and keep us going. But after 2 hrs of sitting there with 2 younger children which we ordered fries and grille cheese sandwiches for nothing came out. We asked over and over again if everything was ok and what's taking so long? something had to be said. We asked for the owner and well. The kitchen door opened and I noticed the Mr. owner talking to the Mrs. owner in what appeared to be a "raised voice" due to body language and veins popping from his neck. She came out and started apologizing. And not really allowing us to speak and say what we wanted to say/ask just kept saying "you haven't been here that long, we got swamped all at once. Etc etc.." we were there a long time. Never once did a manager or owner come out to explain the wait times or our concerns until we demanded it and even then it was a joke. There were tables who were seated after us and ate and left before we even got food! (Which we NEVER got food). Place is such a joke. I'll never waste my time there again. And it's a-shame. I hope this review helps others think twice about it! Maybe it was a bad night and things happened I'm unaware of. If that's the case maybe they could have came out and gave us a heads up instead of acting like it was all good and "our ticket was being prepared now" That all said. We started talking over "the owner" and she kicked us out and we left. And went to GREEN OLIVE.. which never ever let us down. They are our goto place and will continue to be.
