It's priced at $18 but it's tastes more like a cheap $8-10 Hh drink. The iced coffee tasted much better. We got the short rib banh mi to share. L got the 5ive special pho and I had the bun Bo hue. I thought the portions would be smaller cuz I remember finishing my own bowl even though we ordered other mains as well. I ate some noodles and meat but I had to get the rest to go. L preferred his pho over the bun bo hue. Mine had more complex flavors. The food was okay...we went to their first location years ago not long after opening and I really liked the food. I even went and got take out but I don't think this is as good as the one on Mulberry or perhaps my tastes have changed. Service was great. I got the pho ($21.78), which is steep for pho, but I guess that's Midtown prices for you. The wait was a slog--over 20 minutes for a bowl of pho, which other Yelp reviews warned about. When it finally arrived, the soup lacked that authentic pho aroma, which was a letdown. On the plus side, the beef was fresh, and the reusable to-go bag was a nice touch. Decent, but the wait and price make it hard to love. Might try again if they speed things up.

After waiting 30 minutes, for what is literally the simplest item on the menu, the bowl is brought out and it's a bowl of broth with a couple slices of chicken. No noodles. When I inquired, the server told me it's because I ordered the Plain Pho... yea and I said it comes with noodles and broth. They told me they could get me noodles, but acted like they were doing me a favor by fetching noodles for me, which was quite offputting because the noodles were quite literally half of the dish I actually ordered. How does one wait half-an-hour at a very casual fast Vietnamese food place, for premade soup and noodles, and still have the order wrong? In the end, I did get my noodles and broth, but the fact that I had to spend this much time and also justify my request for noodles (which are part of the dish) is quite insane. I put this at 2 stars for now, because I enjoyed my first time. Hopefully the service will improve.

It is usually packed during meal times so expect a wait or choose to order take out to save on wait times. I personally love when the Bahn mi is stuffed with both the meat and veggies, it has the perfect ratio. Sometimes there's not enough filling and it feels like you are only eating bread, but at Nom Nam that is definitely not the case. The Pho was also pretty flavorful and it wasn't the best I have had but it was still really good given that I haven't found too many Pho places that I love in nyc. I definitely recommend adding Nom Nam to your lists of places to try!

Do I agree it's "the best pho in nyc"? Hell no. Would I say it's a pretty damn solid pho? *bleep* yeah. I think it also helped that there was a surprising amount of Vietnamese people dining there. For perspective, we're a bit of a rare breed in nyc itself and much less in this pocket of Manhattan. Suffice it to say, it's a Viet restaurant worth going out of your way for. So-- here are the things I unexpectedly like about Nom Nam: * I love love love the diner homage. It's common for new restaurants to play it safe or create an environment of grandeur, that people are often adverse to have fun. This checkered multi-colored menu, neon sign having, is unapologetically fun. The sign on the wall "troi dat oi" is a passive aggressive phrase all Vietnamese moms say. I could do with a different name than "Nom Nam" but it is easy to remember. * The pho: SOLID! Can we take a minute and celebrate reliability without admonishing mediocrity? I like eating upscale obscured ingredients more than the next guy but I'd much prefer a consistent reliably good savory pho or a cold/hungover/sick night. * The Bo Luc Lac: look... or luc (hehe don't kill me-- my gf just sneered at me), the BLL did not have that desired wok hay seared outside but the meat-- tender, the sauce-- immaculate, my stomach-- happy. Honestly I'd buy that sauce alone. Things I didn't like (or care for really): * The cocktail: I like a place with a dedicated cocktail list bespoke to them but they played it safe here. There was one item that could be considered the most Vietnamese but it came off generic. I mean it's a good cocktail but lacks that special flair the rest of the restaurant is doing great at. * The wings: the wings were good. In fact, they tasted exactly how my mom makes them and she's considered the best cook out of 7 siblings. That being said, 4 wings? I know, you probably don't wanna do that either; I blame the economy... and a certain party making the economy worse as we speak. * The pho descriptions on the menu: as a Viet, I even had a hard time discerning what makes each one distinct. I feel like ai would be a good use case here to help Things I'll be coming back for: * Them Banh Mis * The coffees * The homemade limeade & salted plum I appreciate the waitress admitting the limeade was really sweet, so I'll go on a day where I had a good gym sesh or something

So when my family stumbled into Pho 39, a tiny spot with just a handful of tables tucked away from the chaos outside, it felt less like finding a restaurant and more like discovering a Rebel outpost that somehow survived undetected in the middle of Imperial territory. The menu is exactly what you'd expect from a solid Vietnamese spot: pho, combination rice plates, the usual lineup. We were ready to order and move on with our lives. Then we saw the tacos. Vietnamese tacos. On the menu. Sitting right there between the banh mi and the spring rolls like they'd always belonged. Nobody in my family said anything for a full three seconds, which for us is basically a standing ovation. We ordered the duck spring rolls to start, which were fresh, well packed, and disappeared faster than a starfighter in hyperspace. For the mains we went with the beef flank pho and the banh mi combination special. The pho had a clean, well developed broth that clearly had some time put into it, and the beef flank was tender enough to make you slow down and pay attention. The banh mi combo was solid, balanced, and hit all the right notes. We did not get the tacos this visit, which means we have a built in reason to return and nobody can argue with that logic. For a small room in the middle of one of the busiest cities on the planet, Pho 39 manages to feel genuinely calm and focused. Good food, good value, and a menu with enough surprises to keep things interesting. The Force is strong with this little spot.

The spring rolls were either badly overcooked or fried in rancid oil, leaving them with an off-putting smell that made them inedible. It was about 92°F outside and there was no AC. They did have a couple of fans running to help with the heat, but unfortunately, they weren't enough. The restaurant has an open-kitchen concept, which is nice because you can see the kitchen, but you can also feel the heat coming from it. With the front door left open, the summer heat was coming in as well, making it extremely hot inside. There were also quite a few flies circling around, which I'm assuming was partly due to the door being left open. That made the dining experience less comfortable, especially while eating. I would've given 5 stars for the food because it was delicious, but the heat, flies, and overall dining environment really took away from the experience. I'd definitely come back for the food, but I hope they find a better solution for keeping the restaurant cool and comfortable during the summer months.
