While visiting my girlfriend's family in Amarillo, my girlfriend suggested we try Bagel Place for lunch. With a name like that, you know those bagels had to be firing on all cylinders. Open for breakfast and lunch, Bagel Place at first glance just felt like your regular deli, but they are loaded up with tons of bagels. From your traditional bagels like Everything, Blueberry, and Cinnamon Raisin to unique ones like French Toast, Snickerdoodle, and Sun-Dried Tomato, they all looked exceptional. Inside, the atmosphere is your classic deli. You would think they're slinging Reuben bagels the way it looks inside. Their menu had plenty of sandwich options, but I was eying their current lunch special, which was made up of oven-roasted chicken, pepper jack cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, roasted red peppers, and ranch dressing. I got it on their everything bagel. For just over $13, it came with chips and a drink as well. It was only a short wait until our food was brought to our table. The sandwich was truly delectable. They do such a great job balancing all the different items in their sandwich, making nothing feel overdone or letting the ranch overpower the rest of it and turn the whole thing too saucy. Their bagels are really the star of the show here because they have so much flavor and are cooked perfectly. The everything bagel was seasoned exactly how you would hope, which made it an especially enjoyable sandwich. We were passing through on a trip and stopped in for a late breakfast. The shop was busy but not crowded. Lots of hustle behind the counter (no table service) and in the kitchen behind. There were a number of tables with people camped out on their computers or sitting and socializing with friends. Also a steady stream of people in and out picking up To-Go orders the whole time. With all the bustle it was a little loud at times, but we didn't have to shout to carry on conversation. Lots of locals obviously enjoying themselves. They have a wide variety of bagels and schmears as you would expect. The bagels were large and tasty. Maybe a little pricey but not expensive. The coffee was lots of fun. They have about a dozen different vacuum pots sitting at the counter filled with different coffee flavors. They give you the empty cup and then you can help yourself. Sadly, by the time we were there most of the pots were empty. Of the dozen there were only 3-4 that still had coffee in them. I tried what I could and they were all pretty good. Not a bad bagel sandwich at all! Some of the out of towner reviews seem a little dramatic. Yeah, it's no NYC bagel, but I live in LA and you can't get NYC bagels there either. Even my Brooklyn-born husband said "not bad" but he wanted more flavor in his Everything bagel. I got a Sesame bagel and it was fresh and soft. Good flavor, but the bite wasn't chewy. Great portion size if you're hungry. Also got a hot cocoa and sat and talked for a while, there was no rush getting us out. Good quick breakfast option on the go or if you want to stay a while. We're new to the area, so we're excited to see what the Amarillo scene has to offer. I took my son for breakfast on a Wednesday morning. It was busy but they have a good system of taking orders and moving to the next customer. They were very inviting and helpful. My son ordered the breakfast bagel with a French Toast bagel. Lots of great bagel choices. He loved it so much (see picture ) I, unfortunately, have dietary restrictions, so I ordered the breakfast burrito with no tortilla. No problems accommodating this request. It was so good. (See picture). I brought the Lox Bagel home for my wife, who always chooses this at every place that offers. She had it on the onion bagel, which she said was delicious, but the salmon was a bit "fishy". Not sure what the sourcing of the salmon was, but not sure what you can expect from a place far from the ocean . I grabbed a coffee as well. It was great to see so many options for the self-serve coffee station. I, myself, don't like flavored coffee, but if you do, great options here, along with regular and decaf options. It has a cafe feel to the place, so it feels comfortable and nothing too fancy. Locals were kind and engaged my son and I in a few of their conversations. I have enjoyed the food at Bagel Place for 20 years. The biggest difference between 20 years ago and today, is the service. The food is the same. The young ladies working are no hurry to get food to customers. In fact, three of the five workers in the front area spent most of their time doing absolutely nothing. It took five minutes to order and 1 sandwich, chips and drink was $14.80. If you are going to charge this much for a sandwich then I suggest not making your customers wait. 25 minutes from beginning of order until I received my food. It's ironic that both times I came here I was actually headed for someplace else that turned out to be closed so I came here because it was close. Both times I had a great meal. Both times I got roast beef sandwich. The first time I just took the roast beef the way they prepared it. The second time I did the build your own sandwich. I think I like their version better. They call it a half sandwich but it's a whole bagel with plenty of meat in it. Both times I got the soup and sandwich and the soup was excellent both times. I wish there was some way of predicting what kind of soup they had without having to call them to ask. Yesterday I was going to get the steak soup but they ran out of it right before I ordered it. I ended up with what they called a Taos soup which I was afraid would be spicy since they said it was a Mexican soup, but it was perfect, not too spicy at all. The first time I got one of their little bitty tastes of chocolate brownie with loads of what I would say was a buttercream frosting although it might be a cream cheese frosting judging by the texture. They obviously must make it themselves. That's nothing that came out of a can. The brownie is rich enough to not even need a frosting so the frosting is just a bonus. I could just eat the frosting by itself like candy it's so good. Anyway I liked the taste so well that I got the full size brownie yesterday and it was so huge I got three desserts out of it over the next couple of days. Boy is it rich. And delicious. When I first heard about this place I didn't go here for a long time because I thought they only had bagels and I had recently learned that bagels were very high in calories so I was trying to stay away from them. I'm not a New Yorker but I've had my share in bagels. The bagel I chose was the Breakfast bagel with ham ( Wow!yum!!) cheese, egg ( fluffy, seasoned with pepper, not sure if salted too). Man ol' man it weighed at least a solid Lb! It did not skimp on portions, still can't get over how delicious the ham was! Easily can be shared with another. The bagel itself was soft, and a good size. Actually one of the largest I've ever seen. I picked the garlic onion, wasn't percent wowed with the garlic toasties on it ( had to try) but then again it made for one delicious breakfast bagel sandwich. Love the vibes there. So I ordered the Bacon Egg and Cheese Croissant and my husband the breakfast burrito with ham. I ordered a coffee (houseblend) The drive thru attendant was super nice. The portion of the food is texas sized but on to quality. My croissant: the bacon seemed pre overly cooked, very crunchy and somewhat cold stale. The portion of egg was too much but I guess the croissant needd a filler. I asked for creamer & sugar but goodness was it dark!!! I was so excited to try this place! The reviews online looked so great but my experience was less than stellar. We came on a busy weekend and it was pretty busy. Masks aren't being encouraged by the customers but the staff was masked. Did see a few noses peaking out though! The drive thru was popping and the lady taking our order was very helpful and sweet. I ordered the egg sandwich with Canadian Bacon and my husband ordered the same but with regular bacon. I got mine on an Everything bagel and he just got his on the regular. We sat at our table and waited. As we waited people were waiting on their to go orders and would gather around tables. Not exactly social distancing but ok... We got our food and the disappointment continued. They got our proteins switched, the eggs were bland and our bagels were very very chewy. I also found mine to be incredibly bland. I wasn't really impressed but I ate as much as I could. As we left we saw a cooler with items. My husband spotted a pumpkin roll. I went out to start the car and he waited at the counter to pay for it. About 10 minutes later he comes out without the roll. No one ever went up to address him! I wanted to love this place. Super busy with a line out the door, clearly the locals like it! Service was super sweet. A nice selection of bagels but they were desperately undercooked. They were soft like a hamburger bun and flattened down to about 3mm. No crust and no chew. The meats were sliced too thick for my liking but it is Boars Head which is fantastic. The most egregious sin was commotted, however. A bagel shop HAS NO BUTTER. When you order your bagel with butter they smile and confirm your order. When it arrives, your bagel is accompanied by a portion cup of Trans fat spread. Which, as we all know, is outlawed in some areas of the US because it is so dangerous to your health.
