I've always said when it comes to pizza, subs, and bagels, Jersey is King -- at least in terms of volume. While the best of these three things can be found in Brooklyn across three specific locations (Di Fara, Lioni, and The Bagel Store), the other 95% of all places that sell these things across NYC sell a subpar a product. Yet in New Jersey, you can drive up to just about any local pizza joint, sub shop, or bagel store and have an experience far above the average. So it should come as no surprise that Bagel Express has now joined my growing list of 4-star places to grab a quick breakfast in the morning. Ironically, this review is not about the bagels. As much as I love a good bagel sandwich, it's just too much food in the morning, especially if you're trying to stay relatively healthy. Instead, I prefer a simple breakfast wrap -- one egg, turkey bacon, American cheese, salt, pepper, hot sauce, in a whole wheat wrap. It's more like a snack than a meal, and it's perfect for those days when I need more than my daily kale/spinach juice. I've been working in Jersey City for almost six years now, and for three of those years I would order this breakfast wrap at the local deli. It may sound like a simple thing to create, but not all scrambled eggs are created equally, and getting turkey bacon cooked just right is an art form. The guy at my local deli had this down to perfection. But then Hurricane Sandy hit and wiped out the deli, which sadly never reopened. Since then, only Brunswick Bagels on the other side of East Brunswick has been able to recreate my wrap exactly the way I like it. Unfortunately, Brunswick Bagels is not on my way to work in the morning. So now I occasionally pop in to Bagel Express. And I have to tell you, the girl on the grill here makes a mean breakfast wrap, everything apportioned perfectly, hot and delicious. To me, the simplest things in life are among the greatest things in life. And given how crappy my commute is in morning, it's nice to sometimes start it off right with a proper breakfast. Service is great here, too. Everyone is friendly and accommodating. Orders are always made correctly. And the prices are all reasonable. Finally, my breakfast fix is covered no matter what direction I head out from home in. :D read more

Super super super super slow took 30 minutes to get 4 bagels. Staff is friendly but doesn't make up for slow service and they burn the Taylor ham half the time to a tiny little blackened cisp if your in a hurry this isn't the place for you takes a minimum of 10 minutes each time I ago. Should be called sluggish bagel instead of bagel express. read more

So I'll give this a 4 star because I love that they actually offer gluten free bagels. No one else in the area does. At first when it comes out you look at it and it's just this flat sad looking thing, but it actually has a delicious flavor to it. I hope they never change the brand they get in. They're much better than the frozen Gf bagels you can buy in grocery stores. I always get their turkey BLT on a gluten free bagel. As good as it is, I do think they overcharge for these sandwiches. For 7.99$ my sandwich should at least come with a small bag of chips or something. Sandwich and a drink, I always end up spending over 10$ total which is kind of a lot for lunch. Since the gluten free bagel is literally half the size of their store made bagels they probably shouldn't be charging a dollar more for them. Most of the employees are nice. Another go to, close to home. Walking distance, which is great. I've been here several times. Bagels are good! Super Cinnamon Raisin is the best! They use Boars Head lunch meat, which is my preference. Always fresh. You can eat there, as they have a few tables, but I always opt to take out. They also have breakfast platters that are priced decently for the amount of food you get. They do home fries right! Sometimes I call ahead, but mostly I just walk in. Orders are handled fairly quickly. Place usually has a line, but the orders come out. Make sure you get there before three though as they close early! read more

The bagels are good enough, which is encouraging given the simplicity of the place. Tea lovers: take your own tea bags from home since all they have is Lipton black & decaf. I guess they don't want to overshadow the cappuccino machine that looks like it was salvaged from a 1970s truck stop. And if I decide someday to name my business with the word "Bagel" in it, you can be sure I will turn out better samples that can be found here. But hunger is hunger; sometimes you just need to fuel the tank and move on. read more

Probably the best bagels in the area and I've tried them all. They are hand-rolled and come out soft and delicious. Service is top-notch, very friendly, but the coffee is rancid. Tastes like dishwater no matter how many second chances I give it. Still, can't beat the bagels and they have good deli meat as well, so it's worth it to make a second stop and get coffee someplace else. UPDATE (8/12): They have new coffee equipment/system and it's much better. Coffee isn't as strong as I like it but it's super hot and tastes 100x better than the poison they were serving before. Bagels fresh out the oven are DELICIOUS!!!! We love the egg bagels and plain bagels. I can eat the bagels just by themselves, with nothing on it .. that's how good they are . Customer service is also great. Will continue supporting this local gem! read more

I'm not a big fan of this bagel. I ordered a wheat everything with cream cheese, lox, etc. The toppings were good and fresh but the texture of the bagel itself was unlike anything I've ever had...and not in a good way! It was so weird! It was like, charred/ burned on the edges (and you could really taste that bad burned taste), a bit crispy on the outside, and like bread on the inside. I did not like it. I can honestly say this is one of my normal spots to grab a quick breakfast sandwich. I usually get a sausage, egg and cheese however I've tried their deli sandwiches such as the cheese steak or roast beef n cheese- okay, nothing great. I wasn't too crazy about the deli side but for breakfast I'd def. recommend. Sometimes the Staff is on point and sometimes not so much but I deal with it because the owner is very nice. I dropped a star because the service can be much better. Environment is clean for the most part and location is great since it's right by my house. And it's a plus when there's always parking :) read more

I'm a stickler for bagels...I am an admitted bagel snob. This place does have a PRETTY decent bagel. It's not the exact kind I grew up with but they do serve a pretty decent bagel. Bagels are big and kinda fluffy. There is a nice baked crispness on the outside...which I like! But it is a tad bit bready in the middle. Just my opinion so depending on the kind of bagel you like you may disagree. To be honest, sometimes I prefer the bagel with butter more then their sandwiches but maybe in a way I am a bagel purist, haha. Either way, a tasty place to try! read more

I have wanted to come here because of the good reviews. I came around 9am, The lines moved very quickly with ordering. The staff felt a little bit overworked, and not very friendly. I told the man at the front what I wanted to order. The man writes it down like crazy, but frowned at me, probably because he felt rushed. The store is pretty small, and there is no restroom, so it made me a little uncomfortable eating a bagel with dirty hands. The bagel came out within 5 minutes. I got a French Toast bagel, and the bagel tasted very soft which I really liked. The woman who brought us our bagels seemed unhappy, and wasn't either friendly, I ordered cream cheese on the bagel, and to me it seemed like they put cream cheese and butter together, which tasted a bit odd. Also, when I was getting my drink, I tried puling the door, and it did not budge. Another man in the line said you have to slide the door.The door did not budge for 5 seconds, but later it worked, and I got my drink. This place has quality bagels and delicious breakfast sandwiches! My boyfriend both get a pork roll, egg, and cheese on an everything bagel with ketchup at least once a week and they are the best I've ever had. The bagels are a great size for a sandwich, not too big or small, and the egg and pork roll is always cooked just the way I like, especially since I prefer both on the more well-done side. The service is also pretty quick, but it does get super busy and hectic around 10-11 am on Saturday & Sunday so either come earlier or plan to wait a little. read more

I love bagels that have very little to no center holes and on this point Bagel Express delivers. That is where it ends for me. These bagels are WAY undercooked to the point where it is just a lump of dough sitting in my stomach. The tops of the bagels are still raw looking and the everything bagels have very little topping on them. Very disappointed in this place. Delicious bagels. My go-to order is simple, a whole wheat everything with butter. Keep an eye on them if you want your bagel toasted like I do! Sometimes they forget. Or they toast the outside not the inside (?) --- Everything I've tried is good... except what is up with the coffee? It's nothing to write home about. Tastes artificially flavored, I only buy it if I didn't have enough time to make my morning cup at home. If they made better coffee I'd probably give 5 stars. Very nasty owner. I ordered two bagels with scallion cream cheese and got a pork roll and bagel with cream cheese. I drove home unknowing and then drove back after I realized I got the wrong order. The manager/owner did not care and refused to give me my money back. I told him that's not how you do business and he did not care. I will drive down the road to Manhattan Bagel for now on. Not every bagel is created equal. Bagel Express bagels are a bit crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle. Baked on premise to perfection. The owner and staff are friendly, service is fast and they will make you whatever sandwich you like. I usually get a cooked breakfast sandwich (eggs, bacon, pork roll etc.) on a bagel or a bagel sandwich with Boars Head brand meats and cheese. I pass many other bagel shops to get here. They also have good muffins. I don't drink coffee but there is a large selection of other drinks. read more
