They make the bagels fresh every day and usually around noon/11:30 they will have another round that comes out that is super fresh... you're lucky to get these. This is a small business as well that provides real bagels, not the fake dunking donuts filled with preservatives. They say they close at 1pm and we come in around 12:45 and the staff refuse to serve us and say they're closed. The owners of this establishment are very nice. #supportlocal We've been frequenting this place for years (I'm surprised I never did a review). Their bagels are good and get there early or your desired bagel may be out of stock. Every time we have family visiting from Boston, they absolutely love Hightstown Bagel. In fact, my brother-in-law ends up getting bagels here several mornings in a row, because my 12 year old niece is a huge fan. This morning, I needed a dozen bagels to drop off at a friend's whose father passed. Although, they didn't have any platters on hand, they were able to find a nice container. This used to be my bagel place of choice but I go elsewhere now. The bagels are average, not bad but not great. I also feel like their bagels are kind of small in comparison to other bagel places. Recently I had to head that way in the late morning. They had like 4 bagels left at 10:30 am -- thankfully I got one of the last! I ordered a bacon, egg and cheese on a sesame bagel with salt pepper and ketchup and it was not good unfortunately. The bacon was fatty and the sandwich didn't seem like it had a lot of egg and barely any ketchup. I paid about $4.50 for it and it just wasn't worth it. However, the staff is always pleasant. I'm sure I'll be back out of convenience, but it's not my first choice in town. read more

Decided to change it up and go with hightstown bagels, I had used to go here every weekend but then we changed it up with a different bagel place. The quality of the bagels were just ok, they were usually a little harder than normal and didn't have as many types as other places would. I got the everything bagel with lox and cream cheese. First off they were very generous with the lox which I appreciated ! The bagel was ok, it was a little harder than expected like the type that could cut the roof of your mouth. As well as the everything was heavier on the garlic to the point where if I closed my eyes I'd think it was primarily a garlic bagel. Wife got 2 BEC, one with ketchup and one without, on everything bagels. They both got ketchup, so they both became mine. The first one I ate was pale like it wasn't baked long enough, and soft. The bacon quality was poor, rubbery and chewy, and there was hardly any everything seasoning on the bagel. Basically, this sandwich sucked. They don't write down orders, so they are constantly forgetting orders when it's busy - this can make them overwhelmed. Not sure why they refuse to take orders in an organized manner. They also run out of bagels constantly. Pretty much every time I go here (which is often) they are out of most bagel varieties. I've never been to a bagel shop that is out of bagels! Even at 8:30am they'll be out of certain popular bagels. Coffee machines are also often out of coffee. This all goes back to them clearly being inept at running this type of business. Stopped here on Saturday on my way to north Jersey. Arrived @10:30 AM and they were sold out of several varieties, so make a note to go early if want best variety. My friend got a pumpernickel bagel lightly toasted with butter and said it was delicious. Certainly generous with the butter. I got a blueberry bagel and the texture was good but had no blueberry taste at all although certainly they were visible. Best bagels around. When I lived in the city I looked forward to coming back to these bagels.

The shop is a little frayed around the edges and could use a thorough cleaning and coat of fresh paint. Other than that, the staff is friendly, and the bagels are pretty good. I found my Onion Bagel with Butter and Swiss to be the right texture - crunchy shell with light airy interior, however, the malt flavor was stronger than I like, and did not play that well with the onion. The Swiss was nutty, but a domestic (soft and not aged long enough). At under $3.00 for the sandwich, it may be the least expensive bagel I have sampled in many years. The value proposition is excellent if you like their bagel recipe. There were very tempting Bialys on display. If I found myself back in Hightstown, I would certainly give one a try. read more

I don't know if I'd usually give this bagel place four stars, but I thought the other review I saw here was unfair so I had to balance it out a bit. This is exactly what you'd expect from a bagel place in a strip mall in central NJ. The place is small, smells great and has an open counter and cooking area. Their bagel selection is pretty solid--nothing too fancy like you'd see at The Bagel Tree or some of the other places I've visited in northern NJ. Their onion has a nice snap and their cinnamon raisin isn't too sweet. Unfortunately like every other place, they've succumbed to the "gigantic bagel syndrome." Puffing bagels up with air to make them seem huge loses their depth and chew and leaves you wanting more. But, this is the case with most bagel joints lately, so it would be silly to punish them in particular for this. You can also get egg sandwiches cooked on frying plates--not microwaves which is a nice. This place is worth checking out. read more

I ordered a plain bagel scooped with egg, cheese, and bacon (since they were all out of pork roll). From my prior knowledge, I believed when I asked for egg on my bagel I would get atleast 2. Not at this breakfast establishment. They charge extra for another egg. At around $4 they give you 1 egg, 1 piece of bacon, 1 piece of cheese, and about a teaspoon of ketchup spread upon a whole bagel. Having grown up in the area, I've been eating these bagels for years and years. They are the BEST bagels around. As soon as you open the front door of Highstown Hot Bagels, you smell the deliciousness. They make the bagels throughout the morning so they're always as fresh as possible and sell out regularly. Every time I bring bagels back from Hightstown, my friends always want to know where I got them and agree that they are the best bagels. Another friend of mine from North Jersey claimed that they would never be as good as the bagels he grew up with -- then when he tried these bagels, he declared them the best bagels ever and insisted that we got them EVERY time were were in the area. They are perfect. They are slightly crisp on the outside and flavorful and chewy on the inside. I like Egg and Egg Everything bagels the best (yes they actually have Egg Everything bagels!), but they are all extremely good. I regularly get the Garlic, Onion, Poppy Seed, Onion, and Plain. Their cream cheeses are also fantastic! I love the scallion/chive cream cheese -- it's a family favorite! I can't bring a bag of bagels home without a container of it! The breakfast sandwiches here are also delicious! They make them with any bagel of your choice and I always get the Sausage, Egg, and Cheese with pepper and ketchup. They also always have hot sauce if that's your thing. Every sandwich is made fresh on the grill to order. In my experience, the bacon isn't the best -- but I think the sausage is great! (It's also too bad that they don't do porkroll...) The three guys who run the place are super nice! They always recognize regulars and are very friendly.
