A newly remodeled Hightstown Diner was unveiled last month. I was a little nervous when I heard they were remodeling. I love the classic old charm of this diner. However, they did a great job updating the tables, benches and counter, as well as opening up the diner to allow for additional seating. It still has all the old school charm, yet in an updated more comfortable setting. The Hightstown diner has been a fixture in downtown Hightstown for over 90 years. It's a diner and the food and service fit that description perfectly. The food is solid and reasonably priced diner fare. Service is friendly and efficient. We frequent this place on occasion for breakfast and brunch. I had the chicken panini and it was very good. I've tried a variety of options from omelets, turkey sandwich, to soups all for a reasonable price. read more

Hightstown Diner used to have character it's been there for over 100 years now it feels like it sold its soul to become some oblique, millennial, ultra modern gray showroom due to the ridiculous renovations. Everything is cold, sterile, and trying way too hard to be trendy instead of just being a good old fashioned train car diner. The prices are ridiculous for what you get, especially considering it used to be a spot where you could grab a solid, affordable meal. Now it's all style over substance, overpriced plates, smaller portions, and none of the comfort or the charm that made it worth going to in the first place. It's disappointing to see a place that once felt local and authentic turn into just another generic, overpriced "modern vibe" spot. Definitely not what it used to be, and honestly not worth it anymore. Long time customer, now going elsewhere. Woodys in Allentown is much better. read more

Service was slow, they mess up 2 salads. 1 Greek salad no dressing. No eggs, no grape leaves. Asked for it chopped. Not done. 1 garden salad, chopped ok, very limited dressing choices. Waiter brought it out with chicken on it. I didn't order chicken. Was charged for it anyway. We took them home for the birds. Paid over 30dollars for 2 salads that we did not eat. Ended up cooking at home. I don't know about the other food there and we don't plan on finding out. read more

We enjoyed the food so that was the big plus. However, service was not great. Our waters were never filled and I actually had to get up and interrupt the waitress sitting on her phone to request refills. Our waitress was also quite curt and it felt like us being there was an inconvenience. Ambiance was very typical of a diner, but it is smaller than most. It was okay for a quick bite to eat but I probably wouldn't come out of my way to eat here again. read more

Came here for breakfast on a day trip to Pennsylvania was easily accessible off the highway, super friendly staff . Nice to see some healthy choices for breakfast. Enjoyed the Energy Platter. All the food we ordered came out quickly by a super friendly waiter of ours. Any other things we needed like coffee refills , water and napkins came out quickly. I came in after spending the day at Six Flags and was looking for quality food to sit down and enjoy. We were promptly sat and our waiter was so attentive and quick with everything we were impressed! Almost everything on the menu includes soup or salad. We enjoyed the seafood bisque soup of the day which was excellent. I ordered a belgian waffle and a burger. My friend ordered the cheesesteak. Both came out quickly and we were checked on throughout the meal if we needed anything else. The prices were also affordable! Whenever I travel outside of NYC I try to go to a diner cause I love the feel of diners and the amount of food they give. I ordered the "a little bit of everything" and it's a good amount of food that tasted great! I usually have low expectations for diner food cause it's usually meh but everything tasted great! The waiter i had was kind and attentive. Would gladly come back and recommend this place. I hope to come back again and hope that the food tastes just as good read more

Hightstown diner is pretty much everything you could ever want in a diner. Let's start with the ambience. It starts off with advertisements from local businesses on the door pretty standard, and then also as followed by local advertisements on the placemat. Then everything from the counter stools to the tile on the wall. Nailed it! The food was good. What you' would expect from a diner, diner food. I ordered an avocado BLT. That was well manicured and delicious. End it with a cherry on top, which was a Leslie choice. Got take-out from here recently and brought it to the nearby brewery. I ordered the chicken panini for myself - it was reasonably priced and tasted OK but not great. I have been coming to the Hightstown Diner in historic Hightstown NJ (founded 1721) since moved to Monroe NJ 3 years ago. I usually sit at the counter and like to watch the kitchen when the doors open. I receive the same timely service whether sitting at the counter on a round swivel bar stool or at a table. The owners and staff are extremely friendly, courteous, and always ask to refill your coffee or need anything else. You have the wonderful feel of a true vintage Diner like back in the late sixties and seventies, as well as cleanliness. The have a nice mixture of diversity and all ages, and enjoy watching the children on the weekend feeling special with their milkshakes. I can spend up to an hour and half easily on a Saturday or Sunday morning in conversation, relaxing, and enjoying the unique daily specials, and especially the breakfast skillet and crabmeat eggs benedict. After doing some food shopping, we were in the neighborhood and decided to give this place a try. We were immediately seated after checking in. The diner is long, with the dining area wrapping around the corner to the back of the restaurant. All of the tables have booths of different sizes, with the ones near the front having plastic partitions. Lamps hang over the booths near the front while a lit ceiling fan and spotlight system hangs over the back areas. Counter seating is also available too and it almost encompasses an entire part of the diner. Hubs had Huevos rancheros, which has homemade tortilla chips, salsa over eggs with Monterey Jack cheese and served over home fries. It wasn't a traditional huevos rancheros. It was more of a Spanish omelette on top of tortilla chips and he loves tortilla chips. He thought it was fun to eat. Daughter ordered the Eggs Benedict with corn beef hash, which poached eggs with corned beef hash on an English muffin. It is topped with hollandaise sauce and served with home fries. She liked it a lot and thought it was nice and crispy, but it tasted like everywhere else she had it . She also said that she would definitely order it again. Lastly, I had waffle with 2 eggs and I liked it a lot. I thought the waffle was nice and crispy. Service was friendly and quick. Will definitely return to try other items on the menu. read more

This is a classic establishment in Hightstown that's been around for almost 95 years now! The food is pretty average but it's always consistent which is good since it's nice to know what to expect. It has your classic old school diner feel on the inside which makes it a nostalgic trip. During the summer and fall of 2020, they made do with the pandemic by offering plenty of outdoor seating which we took advantage of once. I got a simple grilled cheese and my boyfriend got the Hightstown burger, which he liked. The mozzarella sticks were a great choice for an appetizer, very cheesy and crispy on the outside. Prices are extremely affordable, too. They've got their own parking lot and are in close walking distance to the Peddie School, Peddie Lake, and several other downtown establishments. read more

The Hightstown Diner was an afterthought after going to a local brewery. Close and convenient. Anna, bemasked, was a very nice server. She performed very well. But the food here is just so so, mundane is a better term. I would probably hope the breakfasts are better. The tuna melt was blah. The tomato in the melt was tasteless. This diner has been serving the community for decades upon decades. Generations of people have walked through these doors and have been fed. There is something to be said for this kind of longevity. It says that they must be doing something right to have lasted for as long as they did. It is creeping up to a hundred years. Let me say almost in contradiction to the above paragraph that the food is not earth shattering. I definitely have had better. But it has been consistent and it is good. This is a diner in a state that has become known as the "diner capital of the world" and with good reason. Jersey has the best diners and has defined what a true diner should be. You cannot go wrong with their breakfasts or a burger. Service has always been good. Ultimately, I am going to give it four stars. For a business to last close to a century, it has to be doing something right. The Hightstown Diner is a good example of that. read more

I strayed from my usual and asked for rye bread toast for breakfast. To my surprise it cost me 95 cents extra. Fun fact: this is the only diner which penalizes you for ordering rye bread. I wonder if the diner allows a variation on the theme of BYOB, bring your own slice of bread. To be clear, my tip is usually 30% for breakfast, so it is not about the money! Came here as one of my last pregnant lady adventures with hubby, we were on our way up to the Englishtown Flea Market and I had the Hightstown Diner bookmarked because of it's feature on DDD. We came in pretty early in the morning and the place only had three people sitting at the bar top, so it was nice and quiet. The diner itself is what you imagine it looked 50 years ago, small, looks like a train car, and homey. The service was very pleasant, two young ladies working as servers and hostess, I was actually really surprised how friendly they were considering it was 7 am and they looked like teenagers. I had read about their incredible hash, so of course that's what I ordered! Hubby ordered a veggie omlette and then we waited. Our meals came with coffee and juice, the juice is concentrate and terrible. I wish I would've skipped it altogether because I hate being wasteful, but there it sat. The coffee was decent, I can't really complain, and considering it was refilled quickly, then I liked it even more. Now for the food.....the omlette was terrible. Really bland, terrible homefries as well. We were unimpressed. As for the corned beef hash, with 2 sunny side up eggs, it was decent. Not excellent, just ok. I really wish I had better things to write about this place, but the food was cooked with no love, which seems ironic if you come here. The whole place is so family oriented and cute, that I wanted my meal to be homey and delicious.
