The potato in the middle was nicely spiced. My coworker hadn't seen dosa before and thought it was the biggest burrito ever until I showed him that most of the inside is hollow, LOL. He got the thali plate, which apparently comes with free refills, which is an amazing bargain! I might get it next time we go, but I do love dosa... We both liked our food, and we also split the fried cauliflower appetizer which was also delicious! I was skeptical when I saw it come out with ketchup, but let me tell you, it works really well with the spices on the cauliflower. Mango lassi is exactly what you expect from any Indian place. Even though the little plaza thing this is in looks a little on the run down side (gives hole-in-the-wall vibes), the interior is clean, looks relatively new, and tastefully decorated, which was a pleasant surprise. The servers were really nice and helped my coworker out as he hadn't had a thali plate before but saw it on another table and wanted to try it. It wasn't too crowded at lunch, but also wasn't that empty, and I think we were the only two non-Indians there, which is usually a good sign, heh. We're already talking about when we want to go back here, and might bring one of our other coworkers who is more open to eating vegetarian stuff, as well, so I know I'll be back here! This is probably going to become a regular lunching spot for us in the future.

They were out, so I asked for a "Limeca." The staff corrected me--"It's Limca"--only to then tell me they were out of that too. A minor interaction, but correcting a customer's pronunciation when you can't actually serve the drink came across as unnecessary and a little off-putting. For dinner, my family and I ordered dosas. We wanted to separate our food into two orders for expense purposes. We were told they couldn't do that, but that we could split the bill at the front desk. Okay--not a big deal. The service once the food arrived was more disappointing. The staff seemed hesitant and unsure about what they were serving and who had ordered what. I found myself directing the waitstaff and coordinating which dosa belonged to whom. At most restaurants, the server either knows where each dish is going or at least clearly announces what they're holding so the appropriate person can speak up. Here, there was very little communication, leaving me to sort it out myself. More broadly, the staff seemed disengaged and lacking in confidence when interacting with customers. I don't know whether that comes down to training, motivation, management, or something else, but the customer-facing experience simply isn't what I remember it being. Management should probably take a closer look at this. The food itself was also disappointing. Both my father and I immediately noticed how little filling there was in our dosas compared with previous visits. My 70-year-old father later remarked that this was the least amount of potatoes he had ever been served in a dosa in his life--and he has eaten plenty of dosas over the years. I understand that food costs have risen, but potatoes are hardly an ingredient where cutting back should make such a noticeable difference. I distinctly remember the dosas here being much more generously filled in previous years. South Indian food is usually a once-a-year outing for my family, and Ulavachar has traditionally been the place we go. I also fondly remember Udupi Palace from growing up in this area, so I've always had a soft spot for a good South Indian restaurant. Unfortunately, after this experience, I don't think we'll be coming back. Perhaps we'll give Madras Café a try next time. Chalta hai, I suppose.

I also enjoy the chicken sheek kabab and my hubby enjoys the beef sheek kabab. The owners and chef are very humble and they make 'home cooked' food. When I used to visit it 20+ yrs ago, it was a place for cab drivers. But now they have upgraded the decor and created a great ambiance. Plenty of parking outside the restaurant. Love this place!
