My husband and I want to share with the neighborhood, our experience with a contractor that frequently solicits work in Stevenson. In fact, when we first hired him, it was from a neighbor referral. Unfortunately, we have not had the same positive experience and, instead, would like to share a warning. Grab a glass of wine, it's a long one.  We hired Badger Contracting to replace a roof on our 1958 Gordon Sugar home in 2018. It was a warranty claim and the owner, Barry Flacks, was initially friendly and responsive, and clearly understood the insurance game. The crew he hired, however, turned out to be unfamiliar with flat roof construction and, on first attempt, failed to retain the MCM aesthetic. Despite a street of identical houses they could have used as a reference, it was starting to look like an 90's builder special (and with a moat of rusted nails yeeted into the grass). Throughout the project, they were tearing out and re-installing elements. By the time the roof replacement was "complete," there were half a dozen patches already in place on our brand-new roof. We were not impressed, but he was paid in full--as it was an insurance claim, there wasn't much we could do.  We called Barry back a few months later when the ceiling in the living room started leaking. And then a few more months later for the same. Then they came back when there were mushrooms growing in the master bedroom closet. Another time, they had to come back to switch a downspout that was mistakenly installed upside-down and catching debris. This was around the time he told us that he never used that crew again. Badger returned frequently--well beyond our 5-year labor warranty which we asked to be extended on good faith. It was clear his profit margin on our roof was shrinking, and it showed in the way we were treated. None of these return trips were prompt, communicative, or friendly. We would come home to men on the roof without even a return phone call, and then no update on work performed. Over and over again.  We were never out to ruin anyone's livelihood. We know Barry has a working relationship in the community and we've wanted to believe that our experience was a one-off due to a poor crew and, other than not passing on Badger's contact info, we kept our experience to ourselves. Our most recent experience with Barry, however, has convinced us that we need to share the continuation of this story. Our 8yo roof failed inspection when we went to sell. Badger came out and performed a repair on soft spots identified by his crew (but we discovered not everything on the inspection report). Then Barry lied to us about the work performed when he insisted that the roof wasn't regraded and that the soft spots were caused by a clogged drain, "maybe a mouse."  But we were on the roof with the roofer. We spoke with him about the work and the crew leader pointed out the low spot, the pooling, and acknowledged it being the cause of the rot--not the drain, which was adjacent. We took a dozen photos as he re-sloped that area. The roof in that area wasn't sloped correctly to begin with. Second and third inspections were performed by certified roofing contractors. They both identified the same additional repairs that needed to be made and submitted their own quotes for repairs. Understandably, after Badger failed to catch (or repair) what their peers had noted, our buyers did not want Badger to return. When we presented those two estimates to Barry and asked that he cover the cost of the lower estimate, he delayed correspondence through the weeks leading up to settlement--not responding until well after we closed. We covered the expenses of the repairs at closing because an 8yo roof should be sound and it was the right thing to do. Again, we asked for reimbursement. Five weeks later, Barry reached out to say that he will not be reimbursing us because 1) he doesn't agree with the three inspections noting the same areas of concern; 2) he feels his crew should have been permitted additional opportunities to address repairs; and 3) it was on us as the seller to negotiate the cost of his failing roof into our sale price. ​​​​​​​So here we are. Dropping reviews across the internet and hoping to avoid small claims court, but certainly not opposed to traveling down that road. read more

Communication is not good. Lag in scheduling. Not due to material delay but because of lack of communication among staff.. Workers attempted to take shortcuts. If I was not home to witness what staff was doing, they would have installed new siding over unsatisfactory, unusable Tyvex material. Salesman unprofessional. This 2 STAR rating may never see the market. Signed contract 1/23/24 and new roof completed in Oct. 2024. Many problems and I was told to make a list of problems, and it would be corrected. The problems were pointed out with a walk around the house on completion. When I complained about damaged rain spouts and poor workmanship I was told to send them a list of problems. I told them they have the list when I did the walkaround. It is not easy or safe to climb a ladder and remove damage gutter guards and remove 2.5 gallons of shingle gravel at the age of 85. The workers also used 9 nails on the breezeway flashing going to my garage. This defeats the purpose of flashing. I did not get free gutters and downspouts, advertised in the weekly Aegis, because I did not sign the contract on the "day" they were offering the free-bie. Not a happy camper. Their pricing for replacement singles was average or the going price----------------- read more

When I asked them how much they would charge to take care of some spotlights, they did it for me for free. These guys are great. They do quality work and stand behind it. Needed a new roof before I got solar. The solar company referred their roofer, but I did not like the price. I got 3 reputable companies to give me estimates (all lower then solar people by the way). Badger was not only the best price, but they also included new gutters and down spouts. I also added gutter guards so I no longer have to get my son in law to clean out my gutters (he's happy as well)... The installers were efficient, swift, and respectful. My roof and gutters look fabulous, I almost don't want to cover the roof with solar panels. THANK YOU BADGER!!! We contracted two jobs with Badger Contracting, Inc. First was a roof that was completed in one day. Great roofing crew with minimal distractions when it comes to a roofing job in the winter. Roof looks great! The second job was Hardie Plank siding that replaced old cedar siding along with new gutters and downsouts. The job took a little longer than we expected but the weather delayed things a bit. All in all, the crew and office were open eared with any questions, comments, and feedback we had. We needed the roof on our shed replaced and Badger was one of the few roofers willing to do such a "small" job. Salesman Erik was friendly and informative about how the job would go. Badger's price was lower than other contractors who provided quotes. The job was completed when I wasn't available but when I checked I notice not all the old shingles had been cleaned up in our yard. When the office was informed, a worker returned the same day as my phone call (even though I was told someone would return the next day). We were in the market for a new roof and our neighbor also needed a new roof, so we teamed up and narrowed it down to four different companies to interview, after considerable due diligence. Our Sales Representative, Erik Sparks, was very knowledgeable and patient with us. He was aware that we were taking bids and did not pressure us. When all the estimates came in, Badger not only had the best price, but also included new gutters and rain spouts. The installers arrived as scheduled and completed our roof in one day. The Gutters and rain spouts were installed the next day, and both my neighbor and I are thrilled with the finished product(s). We hired Badger Contracting to remove/replace our roof. The new roof has been leaking since the first winter and the owner, Barry Flaks refuses to fix it. The contract included 3 roof penetrations based on a sketch I provided. The penetrations were located incorrectly. They cut new penetrations in the correct location, but didn't close off the 3 incorrect penetrations. They "patched" the 3 holes with roofing material; if someone steps on they will fall thru. After making an appointment with Mr. Flaks to pay the balance, I inspected the roof, then informed Mr. Flaks that there were major issues. I contacted the manufacturer (Firestone) who informed me that based on photos I provided, the roof was not installed according to their installation requirements and that there was no warrantee. Before I agreed to the work, Mr. Flaks talked about the manufacturer's warranty and the contract states that there is a manufacturer's warranty; but there is no manufacturer's warranty. Some of the problems include: - Holes in the roof structure thru the decking and substrate. No decking or substrate. -Exposed plywood on the edges front and back. Flashing does not overhang the plywood. -The edge detail was not installed per the manufacturer's instruction. There is no blocking. -The corners were not done correctly and they used an excessive amount of "tape" instead of heat welded corners. The Firestone rep. who looked at the roof in person described the corners as "overworked and sloppy parapet details on inside and outside corners". He also said "Unless significant water has penetrated under the membrane, perhaps you could nurse this along for a few years and adhere a TPO fleece back to in 3-5 years". Note that since the Firestone Rep made that statment, water has penetrated under the membrane constantly since the first winter. The decking and roof joists are saturated when it rains. This is important based on his statement. -The gutter was not correctly re-attached. Rain bypasses the gutter and is cascading down the exterior wall likely damaging the wall. -The insulation substrate per the contract was to be 3-inch. When measured at the six penetrations, it is 2-inch thick. -And the photos speak louder than words. Other issues included: -The workers helped themselves to the refrigerator without asking, and left bottles all over the house. -The house inside and out was a complete mess after the second day and they had to come back to clean. It was still a mess after. -The neighborhood kids said the workers were urinating in bottles and throwing them off the roof. I expressed my concerns immediately and repeatedly (everything is in writing) and here are some of Mr. Flaks quotes: "OK how about I just start over? Allow me the opportunity with no lawyers or anything to do it over." "I am happy to redo the roof and correct any way you see fit. I am a man of my word and will do what it take to correct including starting over. I would like the opportunity to fix my mistakes please." These are direct quotes of Mr. Flaks from his emails. Is he a man of his word? So what has he done to correct his mistakes? In fact he has refused to fix the roof, which would require being torn off and starting over. I've sent him dozens of photos of the leaking roof during rains. I even asked him to come see the leaking while it was raining. What has he done? Mr. Flaks has hired lawyers, filed a judgment against me, and has hired a collection attorney to collect on the judgment. Meanwhile my new roof continues to leak, it's cost me time off work, time dealing with him and his lawyers and constantly dealing with water in the house. It's been a huge frustrating mess. So if and when I pay the judgment that his collection lawyer is forcing me to do, I will need to hire another roofer to remove the new roof he installed and pay to have another new roof installed correctly by a different contractor. Two years wasted and counting and saga working with Mr. Flaks continues... read more

Price was reasonable and scheduled on our time frame. Crew they hired did not know how to install roofing venting system; putting the intakes too low and not cutting the planking at the ridge for the exhaust; just nailed the vent on top of the planking. Also did not know that the garage was to be re-roofed as well. I had to tell them not to take away the "extra" shingles because they still had the garage to do. When I pointed out the venting issues, Barry was responsive right away and had them re-do it. What if this had happened to a homeowner who did not know what to look for? All of this might have been avoided if Barry or an experienced super had visited the job site on installation day. In the end, I got what I paid for; just think it was not my job to supervise the work. read more

He just tells you about the products, their attributes and warranties, recommends based on needs...then turns quote around in 24 to 48 hours. He is fair and reasonable.
