We have a buddy visiting from LA and graciously agreed to spend the weekend in Petaluma with us. I convinced the group to breakfast at Bacon because of the episode on KQED's Checks, Please! I knew i had to try the Pacifica frittata & the Homemade jam. Three stars means "OK". Bacon is OK. I wanted to go to Marvin's one Sunday morning so me, my guy, and the pup got up early to arrive there at 7am when they open. We know it's super jammed from opening to closing, so thought this was our best bet. Unbeknownst to us, they don't open outside dining until 8am. DARN! We didn't want to wait an hour, that was the whole purpose of getting up early! We walked away dejected and figured we would try Bacon right down the street. We had pleasant service who was very attentive. The prices of the breakfasts are similar to Marvins, but the quantity is not. I paid something like $14 for three tiny little pancakes. It came with a tiny little side of fruit. I left hungry. My guy got an omelet and he said it was good, but not like the fluffy ones at Marvin's. Would I eat here again? Yes. On Grant, it's really a "brunch choice" between Marvin's and Bacon - both are unique in their own way, as I would consider Marvin's "heavy traditional US breakfast" (and damned good to boot) vs. Bacon would fit more in the middle of the road with a flexible menu that has a few twists. For example, Honey Bee bacon appears to be their twist on the Millionaire Bacon, and is not to be missed by bacon influencers. My wife loves egg whites and they're prepared expertly here (no burning, fluffy, slightly buttery), and the fruit plates, while dear in cost ($7.95/solo, $2.95/side or replacement), are a healthy way to replace fries or bread. The cheesesteak is worth exploring in that the meat isn't the shriveled, day-before beef that often finds its way to the dish; this is like a mini-filet that has been shredded and is mouth-meltingly superb with the jack cheese and meltingly soft onions. Across the board, experience and consistency are working in tandem at Bacon. Beer, wine and apparently vodka (!) are available...since they usually close at 2:00 PM, I presume Bloody Mary is the popular vodka choice. Iced Tea tastes like Chinese tea, and I really enjoy it. Coffee hits it right on the nose too. There's also, for those inclined to take sweets to the next level, there's Deep Fried Twinkies for you. With raspberry sauce. Enough said. SERVICE: I believe this is a family-run business (I think they own a couple of other businesses in the area). Like Creekside, Trek, and others in the area, that family core really shines through the service, efficiency, and their ability to remember previous orders despite very brisk daily business. Seating is super-fast, and even service on crazy days is expert. They'll also let you know if things take a bit longer, but that's only happened once in the 20+ times we've visited. ENVIRONMENT: Clean, with lots of colorful and whimsical local art (for sale) lining the walls. Restrooms are cleaner than most. Table seating is ample and there's usually enough room to stretch out even on busy days. Particularly outdoors, you'll often want to linger with friends and/or family a bit. We drove from Sebastopol and a friend drove from San Francisco to have brunch based on reviews of this restaurant. We placed our order and were served coffee fairly promptly. We then placed our order for food. We were not checked on for 50 minutes. No one came by to refill coffee during this time. When we asked the status of our order we were told it was not placed and they had to retake our order. There were no apologies, no comps on food or drink. Coffee refills flow, inside can be a bit warm but there are fans. The quality of the food is amazing. They use real maple syrup and it is not an extra charge. This place is okay if it's your final destination and you have nowhere else to go and no place else to be for the rest of the day because the service is so slow you will have to cancel the rest of your day. This was our second visit a year after our first visit and nothing has changed except that this time there was no air conditioning and the inside dining room was sweltering. Also apparently saving money on cocktail napkins so our drink glasses just puddled the table. We were there 1 hour and 10 minutes and our food still didn't arrive. Looking around the dining room, people who came in before us weren't eating yet either so we paid $18 for two watery Bloody Marys and left. My partner and I visited on a Saturday morning at 10 am. We parked on the street around the corner and waited less than 5 minutes for seating outside with our dog. It was good timing for us because every other outside table was just seated. Indoor seating didn't seem to be an issue at all. The food was delicious. I really liked the sweet thick bacon in the honeybee bacon frittata (although my partner didn't like it as much because he doesn't like savory foods that are on the sweet side). My partner couldn't stop raving about the fried chicken. He said there was a slight curry seasoning that made it super delicious. The Monte Cristo was pan fried ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese sandwiched between two fried French toast slices serviced with berry jam. The jam was delicious paired with the sandwich. (said Rick James) the california frittata had thick slices of well done bacon, cheese, avocado, accompanied by square country potatoes with green onions and peppers. The frittata was very good and I enjoyed it. The potatoes were good but not crispy. My other half had the sandwich with pannini which come with a huge delicious portion of hot and steamy wedge fries. She wasn't impressed with the chicken as it was rubbery and marinated with too much teriyaki sauce or Asian style cornstarch. We ate on the patio under an umbrella and were brought drinks immediately. The waitress came by our table and took her order within five minutes of seating us. Once we ordered her food, it is about 15 minutes for it to arrive piping, hot and ready to eat the eggs Benedict. It was an excellent choice. We have gone to Bacon for the past two years. And we have never experienced a service like today's. We had a party of five and were sat at a table for four. So our table was tight. When we were sat down it felt so rushed (I understand Saturdays are busy but that doesn't mean proper service should fall short). Our menus and utensils were just slammed on the table by the waiter. Our hostess looked like she was running a cold (just like other people on the staff). We waited over an HOUR for our food. There was no apology coming from the staff about the long waits. And the first plate delivered was made incorrectly. During this hour of waiting, we noticed how unkept the restaurant was. There was dust everywhere. The sauces on the table were disgusting (caps unclean, and bottles were dusty with other condiments). We saw staff continuously touch their noses as they were running around. The attentiveness from the staff was nonexistent. Our coffees were barely refilled because the kettle was always empty. Once we received our food, the staff began to be more attentive. Makes sense, they just wanted the check. The environment felt so chaotic. It seemed that the staff had no idea what they were doing. Safe to say our family was deeply disappointed with Bacon's lack of care in their services. We will not be coming back here. read more
