If you've not been to this restaurant since the new owners, I highly recommend it. We were there for a gathering of 8 in the back room reserved just for us. Two companions ordered and raved about their burger. Everyone loved the crispy-on-the-outside and tender-on-the-inside fries. They were gracious to create a special order for me: 2 eggs scrambled with spinach, diced tomatoes, and chorizo; iceberg lettuce, plantains, and homemade hollandaise. Since l adore extremely lemony hollandaise, I asked for lemon wedges; they brought 3 and I could have used even more. (I really like it lemony!) Our server was fun, sweet, competent, and friendly. There are so many wonderful options on the menu--breakfast all day including omelets, waffles, and pancakes. Thursdays are for special pricing for pupusas I can't wait to try. The ambience is adorable. It's a Western theme. Our server wore a fringe vest. There are adorable stools (see photo!) that are actually as comfortable as they are cute. There are two big screen TVs that had lovely spring scenes that made me pause, smile, and soak it in. There's a rack of Western hats--perhaps for little buckaroos to wear when seated on the horse getting their photo taken. There's a huge white throne bench for photos, too. Super fun. Our server was very sweet, our sandwiches were decent, we were served quickly. Overall it was an ok experience but not one I'd be anxious to return for at this price point. The salad with the sandwich was uninspired plain iceberg lettuce. The elote was mild, not bad and came with (yummy) cotija and mayo. The barstools at the front that look like legs are cute but the aggressive cowboy decor with white linen tablecloths felt misaligned. I don't think they know the vibe they are going for. This Star Restaurant deserves at least seven stars! My son and I just came back from a two-week vacation in Spain and the first craving we had was for Latin American food. How lucky were we to discover that Star Restaurant was just around the corner. First of all, I used to remember it long ago as an American diner. What is surprising is that it still is (serving breakfast all day, along with favorite American food like burgers and baby back ribs) but in addition, there is a delicious selection of Guatemalan dishes. My son had the Bistek (with all the fixings: salad, rice & beans) and I opted for a huge moist flavorful chicken tamale appetizer with my "Mojarra Frita" which turned out to be one whole (head to tail) fried tilapia that also included rice, beans, salad and handmade (thick but fluffy) corn tortillas. How do I begin to describe every item on my plate?! I can't. I only know that I will go back and try their whole menu dish by dish, if it takes a lifetime. Every biteful was mouthwatering and completely satisfying. Definitely try a glass of horchata (made with rice, water & milk) with your meal! It's sweetly delicious and soothes the stomach when you've eaten too much! I should know. I can't say enough good things about Star Restaurant. (Okay, I'll try!) Their customer service is excellent. (If you ask them to omit the cilantro & onions, they remember.) The staff are there to make sure your experience is unforgettably positive. There are more reasons to try Star. White tablecloths on each table! What casual diner has white tablecloths at dinnertime?! Star does. Their menu is extensive but nothing about it screams fast food. The western decor is cute and friendly. The restroom facilities are clean. (There must be a word limit but here I am still typing!) All that aside, the main reason to try Star Restaurant (again and again) is the food. I'm talking about Latin soul food made by a family who cares about quality and attention to details. Star restaurant has a variety (and I mean everything!) from breakfast American / Latin style to a kids menu that has it all, and pupusas. They have milkshakes, healthy salads, hearty comfort food, and booths with big windows to keep kids interested. There's a cozy vibe to it. I don't know why it has 3 stars because if you're looking for great timely service, where you don't feel rushed and can sit and enjoy the meal, a unique place that isn't a chain, come here. We've eaten at Stars four times. The menu is crazy with their rang of choices. So is the decor with the cowboy theme. Reminds me if the restaurant in the tv series "just off the boat". After a long hiatus, we have visited the *new* Star twice in the past two weeks. We have not been disappointed either time. I have to say I love the kitchy cowboy motif, it's really cute and the wait staff seems to enjoy their costumes as well, but the decor aside, this is a real Guatemalan find. They have retained many of the American menu items from the old place, but what really shines here are the latin dishes which are just fabulous. Last time I had the breakfast burrito, my wife had the heuvos mexicana, and dad had the bacon and avocado omelette "the best omelette I ever had" he said. This time I had the street tacos, my wife had the huevos again, and dad had the same omelette. Everyone was very happy with their lunch. The tortillas? Home made, amazing. Salsas, same. Guac, same! I ordered delivery on a Thursday morning. I ordered biscuits and gravy, a side of hash browns and a side of fried plantains. I'm so disappointed in the first two items. Hash browns: So oily, tasted like margarine. Not even butter but margarine. Weren't crispy and not seasoned well...other than the overwhelming taste of fake butter. I usually wouldn't take a picture of something halfway through eating it, but the amount of oil in the container was startling. It tasted even worse than it looks Biscuits and gravy: I was surprised the sausage in the gravy was in such large chunks, and from a sausage link it appeared as well! Usually sausage is incorporated into gravy more smoothly, this was a sad and lazy attempt at gravy. Putting it through a blender for 5 seconds or using an immersion blender would have yielded a better result. The biscuits are low quality, have no flavor whatsoever and have absolutely no bite in the sense the biscuit is complete mush. Toasting it even for a minute would have been so so so much better. Plantains: plantains were good and the sauce they gave was the usual par for the course with fried plantains. We had just come a memorial for one of our friends at the Presbyterian Church of Novato. We're from Vallejo and don't know Novato at all. Then the Star Restaurant caught our eye with the large bronze statue by its front door. We were intrigued by the "American-Latin" food description. Upon entering, we saw a few people in booths. The lunch crowd hadn't packed the eatery yet, but it's located on a main street at the intersection, so it was only a matter of time before customers would arrive. The interior was decorated with Western decor. I liked the little hole-in-the-wall atmosphere. The tables were covered in neat, white tablecloths and the booth seats were clean and unbroken. Shari was our attentive waitress. If you like homemade tacos and Plantains, this is the restaurant for you! Prices were affordable; if they had a location in Vallejo, we'd probably return. Can't really understand why we hadn't been back to Star since their remodel. Boy were we missing out. It's clean and understated with a fun Hacienda Ranch feel but with white tablecloths! There's no full bar but the beer and wine selection is reasonable. The best part is the food. I had the Pollo Asada plate with handmade tortillas. Fabulous! Nice old style diner. I've been here a couple times and it's a good place to get diner style food and service. The last time I went I get the veggie scramble and it was REALLY good. I'm a sucker for a good veggie scramble. Next time I will ask for a little less cheese but it's still good. I also ordered it with a bloody mary and I might skip that one next time. This place gets very popular with the older Novato crowd so sometimes you might get good timing and service and sometimes you might be waiting a while. Keep in mind that every time I've been there its been 1 server and 1 cook. I might be a little generous with the 4 star appraisal as some other reviewers might be much more critical but if you look at it as a home-town local spot with good food and nice people then I think it's appropriate. The food was nicely prepared and served- with a few small pieces of bread pudding served as a complimentary appetizer on a wood cutting board. I ordered a standard eggs, potatoes and toast breakfast. It was both large and quite good! So, the food is better, in my opinion, than either the decor or the music. We've driven past this restaurant hundreds of times, but recently noticed that the Yelp reviews had improved. Well, there's a new Star in town and we're sad to be late to the party. Clean, crisp tablecloths were the first clue that a wonderful breakfast was to come. The Huevos Mexicanos were delicious, with lots of chorizo and delectable warm handmade corn tortillas that were over-the-top excellent. The breakfast enchilada was also filling and delicious. Last month I celebrated my birthday along with 17 friends and we could not have been happier or better treated. We reserved the back room, had flowers delivered and decorated it. Although we were a large party, we were allowed to have separate checks. This accommodation was exceptionally generous. The owner provided vegetables and dip without charge and without our requesting it. I ordered a cake and asked that it have happy birthday written on it. The cake was a delicious two layered, dark chocolate cake with light mocha frosting. So good! We had the room as long as we wanted and all of the dishes were excellent. Haven't been to Star since they remodeled, so it's been a minute. For real, if you're in Novato and want a bomb breakfast. Go to Star! I had Huevos Mexicano. So good. House made tortillas...whoa. The chorizo scramble, the refried beans...all of it. My kids got a hit chocolate that was like an ice cream Sunday. Wifey got a traditional, two egg breakfast and she said it was all excellent. My husband and I tried Star Restaurant for dinner last night. It was a Monday night around 5:30pm. We were seated right away. The decor was nice and we liked the country music. We had the tornado potatoes for the appetizer, and it was very good. We had the Cobb salad and Pollo Asado - both tasted great. The Strawberry Daquiri was soo good! We ordered two desserts to go. Very hot in the restaurant Forgot to give us menus Waiters have difficulty with English which makes it hard to order. Forgot my daughter's food then later received cold sausage. When I asked for side of sauce and ketchup, it's an extremely small portion. Menus don't say what kind of cheese comes with the entrees and the waiters don't know either. Waiter said they have cheddar cheese and I received American cheese Food was bland and dry. Soda has no carbonation Food was overpriced. I would like this place to do well. I wish I'd ordered empanada or pupusa to try those. Service was friendly and attentive at lunch time. My son enjoyed his burger. The ribs however need some adjustment. I make ribs often and could tell these were not seasoned before cooking. Adding a rub or just lawrys seasoned salt before cooking would help. Good sized portion but adding bbq sauce is not enough. Also wrap in foil to keep moist. The Guatemalan nachos were hearty but if you order beware they are very different that Mexican nachos. The remodel of this restaurant is awesome they did a great job, they even have crisp white tablecloths on each table. Real wood trim and an open kitchen. My husband ordered eggs toast and hash browns. The toast was more like bread , not toasted enough, otherwise the dish was fine. I tried aGuatemalan enchilada. It was just a corn tortilla with a lettuce leaf, chopped beets, ground beef , onion and a couple of hard boiled egg slices. It was really bland. Sounded more intriguing than it was.
