This restaurant prides itself on their individual hot pot servings with choices of toppings to choose from. But for the woven noodles our order didn't deviate, and both dishes were the shaking beef as protein. The beef was tender, chunky and delicious! The noodles were cooked right - just the right chewiness! One could technically just slurp it all down with the side bowl of dipping sauce but we took our time to wrap the beef with the mint leaves and the noodles. I do not give a lot of 5 stars, but Bacogai defintely deserves it because not only was the food good, our waitress and her service was amazing. They are located in the Bridgeside Shopping Center and this seems like it is a semi-busy plaza, but there was plenty of plenty of parking in this shared lot on our visit. The exterior is bright and modern, while the interior has a lot of Lunar New Year decorations and plants, which was nice. Walking in the restaurant, my friend and I were a bit hesitant and asked if it was okay, if we dined in, since it was 30 - 40 minutes before closing, which we were cheerfully greeted to sit anywhere. We honestly had no high expectations of the food or service, as it was a last minute spot in the vicinity that my friend found on Yelp that was still opened at the time. As stated already, service was great because of our awesome & wonderful waitress, Rijeana - she was friendly; professional; and welcoming, even though we came about about 30 - 40 minutes before closing. She came by to answer any questions that my friend and I had regarding the food / menu. My friend already knew what she wanted, but I let her know that I was debating over 2 of their hotpot choices and what I should order - either the Lau Oxtail or the Lau Pork Bone Marrow because I was not sure about the broths. Rijeana gave her input and favorite, as well as offer to let me try a sample of both broths. I received a small bowl of both broths shortly, which my friend and I both tried and agreed that the oxtail one was better / more of my taste. My friend ordered the Banh Hoi - Beef Luc Lac, while I ordered their Hotpot - Lau Oxtail with an additional egg. The food came out shortly and the presentation of everything was nice, so we digged in and enjoyed our food. We tried not to take too long, as it got closer to closing, but not once were we rushed by our waitress - she just cleaned and did other tasks, while we ate and when the last customers left and she finished clearing off / cleaning their table, I decided to just take my food to go, as I was getting full anyway. Rijeana assured us that is no rush too and she offered to help pack up my hotpot instead, which was a big help because I know for sure, I would had a hard time trying to pour the hotpot in the container without any mess / spills. We got my leftovers packed up, received the bill - paid & tipped, and thank her personally (and asked her for her name at this point) because of our fantastic experience because of her wonderful service. The family visited Bacogai at 6:30 PM on a Saturday night. We had reservations but the restaurant wasn't full. The size of the restaurant was larger than I thought given the photos. We were greeted by an older man (perhaps the owner) and promptly seated. The servers were great although it seemed like there were only 2 of them. I had the IPA on tap and it was a good drink to have while pondering the menu. There were 7 of us so we had a good variety of food: duck goi-slaw salad with extra chips appetizer, Lau Canh Chua, Lau Oxtail, Lau Pork Bone Marrow, Lau Mushroom. The appetizer was awesome! It's honestly large enough for 3 or 4 people if you treat it like a true appetizer. The hot pots are small, individually sized and come with their own accompaniments. They have 3 different sauces (beware of the chili-based sauce, it's really hot) which added some really nice flavor. Everybody enjoyed their hotpots. Sadly it is not as good as I expected. I saw it on Instagram and I think it looked a lot better in the videos. The meat was not great, however, I did love the broth. No complaints on service but the food was not worth the price in my opinion. I did like the fried crab roll things though! The green Thai tea was disgusting in my opinion, but others in my party didn't mind it so they drank it. I'd give it 3.5 if Yelp allowed that, but I don't think it deserves anything above that. Small and cozy Vietnamese hotpot place!! We had a group of 3 on a weeknight and got seated immediately. The service continued to be really good, and it was impressive watching the servers handle the really hot and boiling pots. We got the oxtail hotpot, seafood hotpot, and pork hotpot. All of them were great and came as soup bases with bowls of ingredients to add in at your leisure. I saw this restaurant on TikTok and needed to try it. I came here on a Sunday for lunch with some friends, and there was no wait. The restaurant is pretty big with lots of tables and a cute modern ambiance. We saw a few families, some couples, and friends catching up like ourselves. It's a great place to eat without feeling rushed or cramped. It's super clean, too! It's located in a shopping plaza in Alameda, so there's plenty of parking available. The food itself was so good! I'm still thinking about the beef luc lac. The beef was really juicy and high quality, and I loved how well it paired with the noodles and fish sauce. I also got the green Thai tea, which I didn't know was green tea + Thai tea (green tea personally isn't my favorite, but was still actually pretty good). I know they're famous for their hot pot, so I'll have to come back to try it next time. I cannot believe I waited so long to try this place, absolutely delicious! My friend and I shared the Lau Canh Chua hot pot. It had shrimp, fish, fish balls & lobster balls with lots of fresh veggies and rice noodles. The broth was fragrant and light and reminded me of Thai Tom Yum flavor with lemongrass. My new favorite spot to meet-and-eat when I'm trying to catch up with family and friends. The vibe is casual and warm. Like being at your mom's dinner table. We cook a little, talk a little, and eat a little more. I love when the food is fresh and hot out the pot. And oh so yummy! The menu is simple and provides enough variety for everyone. Both appetizers - yes, please! My favorite soup is the Lau Canh Chua (catfish), and I will try something new eventually but not yet. Huge fan!!! It's not often you'll find places that specializes in Vietnamese style hot pot. Of course, they also sell banh hoi dishes which I am a huge fan of!! I ordered a dokkaebier calmansi and tea lager (which I haven't seen in stores so I was pleasantly surprised to be able to get it here) and it was very refreshing to have with hot pot. The hot pot orders are individual and priced at about 25-27$ per person with the option of add ons: we got the wagyu beef. Although the prices seem high, it was enough food for an average person so you don't really need add ons. Also, this place is worth it so forget the price! I got the Lau Canh Chua (the last time I had this was in Vietnam a few years ago). Everything about this dish was well balanced. I hesitated to get the pineapples removed at first and I'm so glad that I didn't! Pro tip: either eat the fish fast AF or remove them and just dip them back in to warm when ready to eat because it will break apart in the soup! Just have to start off by saying the ambience is a vibe...from the music, to the decor, and especially the service. This is my second time here. First time, they had a more limited menu as I think it was their soft opening. One of the owners, I forgot her name, actually came out to receive feedback. I remember recommending they add more oxtail in the soup. The Luc Lac is a must-order and the fried spring rolls are good, too. The Bone Marrow and Oxtail hot pots are my favorite. My wife ordered the Oxtail hotpot (this time with plenty of oxtails) and I figured I'd try the Lau Canh Chua - the tamarind broth seafood soup. I was looking forward to a sour soup, similar to Filipino Sinigang, but the pineapples made the broth sweet and not sour at all. The menu recommends one hot pot per person, but one pot could easily fill up two people with smaller appetites. All in all, it is a hidden gem on Alameda. I don't recommend ordering a hot pot for small children, though. They are presented beautifully on the table, but over an open flame. On a warm Saturday evening, we decided to try Bacogai. We got there at 5:15 and were the first ones there for dinner service. We were greeted warmly and could choose our table. As our meal wore on, the restaurant filled up. Service was friendly and efficient. Extra plates and serve ware was cleared as necessary. I had the oxtail hot pot. It was so rich and flavorful. A bit salty but easily cured by a splash of water. The pots were nice a bubbly for the duration. Generous serving of oxtail, veggies and ramen! I was able to sub out tripe for more veggies w no up charge so that was nice. $4 extra for extra broth but I didn't need it. There was enough broth to get to the end. My kids each has the bone marrow and they both enjoyed it very much. Theirs was rich and creamy and had udon instead of ramen. My son finished his and my daughter ended up sharing w my husband. The waitress was amazing, very observant and noticed whenever I wanted something, even when she was busy two tables away - she must have a superpower to observe all the customers at all times. For example she showed up with more napkins the second I used up my old one. She also had useful and friendly suggestions. I got the impression she was a relative, either way I hope they appreciate how much she is adding to the restaurant. Another woman might have been the other daughter brought out the food and was equally polite and friendly. The food was the main event and was fortunately the best part. We got a tamarind base soup which was very good. We also got the bone marrow soup (at the waitresses recommendation). The bone marrow soup was absolutely amazing. I strongly recommend it. On a cold day in November, I was looking for something warm and hearty for dinner that would excite my tastebuds and Bacogai delivered on all accounts. I wouldn't normally order hotpot takeout, but they also had other options...like Egg Rolls (lol), so I decided to go for it. The Lau Pork Bone Marrow Soup with chicken, udon, tofu, and veggies was amazing. The broth was rich, comforting, and just what I needed. All ingredients were fresh, earthy, and paired so well with the broth. I loved it! The Beef Luc Lac was so incredibly flavorful and I really don't eat that much beef, but I couldn't stop eating it if that tells you anything. I also enjoyed the vermicelli sheets. I went to their soft opening a while back so I was excited to give this place a try again after some time. They offer personal hot pots centered on Vietnamese flavors. I got the oxtail soup. Others at my table got the pork bone marrow (had a flavorful milky broth) and canh chua (Vietnamese sour soup). The portions were filling and service was very attentive and friendly. My soup had three pieces of ox tails, some beef balls, and tripe. I thought they were generous with the fillings but wish the ox tail was more tender; mine were tough and a little hard to eat. My partner got the pork bone marrow and the soup came with thin slices of pork but it came already in the pot. Since it came to the table already boiling, the pork was pretty over cooked but the time it was time to eat. Overall a nice place to check out. If you value fresh ingredients and dishes made from scratch, then Bacogai is for you! This was the perfect meal for a rainy night. We ordered Duck Goi-Slaw Salad, Lau Mushroom (personal hotpot) and Lemongrass Pork Banh Hoi. The Duck Goi-Slaw had zing, crunch, sweet and salty. A bright, tasty salad that welcomes you into the dinner! For two people, I felt like this was just the right amount of salad as a starter. I was also pleased with the amount of duck, I could taste it with each bite. The Lau Mushroom hotpot was fabulous! The quality of the mushrooms reminded me of the farmers market; firm and robust! I like to load my hotpot with everything offered. This dish gave us 3 equal portions with udon, greens, tofu and mushrooms, and just enough delicious broth to sip at the end. This dish was meant to be a single person hotpot, but we easily shared it between the two of us. The Lemongrass Pork was my introduction to Banh Hoi (I had to google how to eat it!). The aroma alone was enough to tell me 'this is gonna be good'. I was told it takes 48 hours to prepare the pork! Totally worth it. Tender and cooked perfectly with just a little crunch on the tips. Next time I will ask for more lettuce leaves since I don't like to overload my wraps. I look forward to trying the Beef Luc Lac Banh Hoi next! Overall, our meal was nourishing; a healthy balance of veggies, proteins and carbs. Definitely food that does your body good! The soup was good but didn't have the same depth of flavor as other places I've had. Unfortunately at ~$40+ per person it was just a bit too pricey, especially for the portions you get, for me to see myself coming back. The oxtail lau was so tender but it lacked a lot of flavor, I feel like the lau has so much potential especially for the price point. I hated that it also came with overcooked ramen - I was honestly really disappointed in this dish. I had added river prawns and was super excited this was apart of the menu because this isn't seen often. I saw this place on Instagram and decided to try it out. There is a Yelp waitlist you can join since it does get crowded. The restaurant is not super big and was packed on a Friday night when I went. We waited about 30 mins and shared the duck salad which was delicious. There was a good amount of duck meat in it, however I had to order extra shrimp chips to eat it with. I also got the oxtail hotpot soup and it had some oxtail bones, meatballs and the broth was flavorful. It came with a lot of Napa cabbage and veggies and a side of noodles. If you're looking for authentic Vietnamese food that's not typical Pho or Bun Mee, this is the spot you want to check out! Upon walking in, it was well lit. Felt like a casual restaurant to go with your friends to catch up with. The host/waitress was very welcoming. She walked us through the menu, recommended what kind of food to get. We ended up getting the Beef Luc Lac and the Lau Canh Chua. The Beef Luc Lac was really good. You have to put the beef and rolled up noodles into a leaf of lettuce and then dip it in the sauce. I think it was nuoc mam. The sauce was delicious, I recommend this dish. The Lau Canh Chua Hot Pot was also a hit! Get your favorite hot pot add-ons and just throw it in the hotpot when it starts boiling! The broth was so good. It tasted very authentic. The fire beneath the hotpot seems to go out pretty quickly so alert the staff to get a new one when that goes out if you still have a lot of add-ons left. Vietnamese food is one of my favorite cuisines and this place is SO good! So glad that there's a nicer Vietnamese eatery that's not in the South Bay. The owners are so friendly and their passion and excitement for their food really shows! Their menu is smaller because they are intentional with what they are most proud of. Everything from the flavors of their food down to their silverware, bowls/plates, decor, and plating are intentional for a pleasant and beautiful dining experience. My friend and I shared their beef luc lac banh hoi (meat was soo tender and the dish overall was so fresh) and the sweet and sour seafood hotpot (everything was fresh and the broth was delicious - I could have drank it straight up!). Overall, everything tasted fresh, which is a plus. Hits The canh chua or sour soup hot pot broth was good. Normally we don't eat it with vermicelli noodles but with rice. Misses The duck salad. The sauce was very salty. Wasn't a fan of the duck either. I love duck but the roasted duck wasn't a fit here. Decent Banh hoi with rolled betel leaf. Wow! We had the duck salad (get the extra shrimp chips, you'll want them), the fish Tamarind hot pot with spinach, trumpet mushrooms, and taro. Finished it off w the fried banana with ice cream. Left very happy and full. I would leave out the fried taro next time (probably better in the pork broth), and I'd try the other dessert (I'm used to the puffy fried banana and this was over fried IMO). Amazing! read more
