It was very empty and easy to get a table on a Saturday afternoon. The service was very friendly and prompt. Our tea leaf salad came out first. It has a strong tea flavor, nice fried garlic. However, we noted that it was a bit too salty. For my personal tastes there were not enough tomatoes. If you are going to make a salad so salty you have to compensate with something to cut it (more tomatoes). Salty nuts and garlic only exacerbate the issue. Then the mango shrimp came. Really tasty! Big chunks of red onion and lots of mango. The shrimps were large, and we were wondering why we had no knives to cut them with. This dish was very sweet, I wished it was less sweet. There was clearly added sugar in addition to the mango sauce. If not sugar, then it's probably canned mango pulp, which comes pre- sweetened. The coconut rice was nice but also exceedingly salty. We wondered whether the cook either is a smoker or has an iron deficiency. I've never had such a salty coconut rice before. It was still good though but would have preferred less salt (or maybe it was a lot of MSG? I'm not sure. Either way it was too much. No hate to MSG, I am immune to propaganda). The pumpkin chicken might have been the best dish. The pumpkin tasted just really good, a strong flavor as though it was fresh. It was really very pumpkin-y! And there was a lot of chicken. It was a big dish great for sharing. I thought it could've been nice with a vegetable like broccoli or peppers added but that's neither here nor there. Finally, the sweet chili tofu. I'll say it has a bit of a kick to it even though we ordered it mild so be aware if you're sensitive to spice. It was quite good; the tofu was crunchy on the outside and soft and tender inside, the perfect texture. It tasted good but was really very sweet. We were interested by the dessert menu but the extreme sweetness and saltiness of every dish made us worry that the dessert would be way too sweet so we didn't order. Usually my favorite part of Asian desserts is they are not too sweet as I'm not the type of person who can take high amounts of sugar. If you are a big sweet tooth you'd like it I'm sure. read more

I was excited to try this new Burmese restaurant in Oakland Chinatown Swan's Market. I would return, however I have some cautions about the cooking. In general dishes were either too salty or too sweet. I hope they adjust that as they settle in We started with the tea leaf salad made with cabbage. It was way too salty. We did enjoy that there were several different types of seeds and nuts in it, and the dressing tasted nice and fermented, however, again too salty. Mango shrimp: this was very good tasting, but definitely on the sweet side. The shrimp was fresh and large. The mango taste tasted good. The sauce was very sweet. Pumpkin curry chicken: this dish had a wonderful pumpkin taste. It was my favorite of the day. Fried tofu in sweet chili sauce: the tofu was crispy. The sauce tasted bottled. It was fine and though sweet, it was not as sugar- filled as some other dishes! Coconut rice: adding a little salt to coconut rice is what I do at home. Salt balances sugar and this is a sweet dish. But oh my, their version also is too salty!! The menu has many items one doesn't see at Burmese restaurants, like Korean inspired dishes such as corn cheese The dessert menu was interesting, but since the main dishes were too sweet and salty, we were afraid of the dessert, all of which were sweets ( sweet rice for example) with three more sweets added ( like ice cream and syrup and something else) So, in summary, too much sugar and salt bit the place has potential. This place newly opened in Oakland and love to see Burmese added to the melting pot of cuisines out here. They had great service and food came out fairly quickly. The location is near swan's market so you can walk around to check out neighboring businesses. One of the newest additions to the Swan's Market block, Aung Myanmar definitely delivered! The staff was very welcoming, talked to us about some of the dishes and helped us choose since we couldn't decide. There were just so many great options! We started with the Tea Leaf Salad - scrumptious, fresh, and crunchy. The crispy garlic really shined through every bite with a balancing acidity taste from the citruses. The garlic string beans were another highlight. The string beans were not overcooked, keeping the fresh crunchy texture. The black pepper noodles surprised me, in a good way. The homemade sauce glazed each noodle thoroughly. It was sweet and savory with a little kick from the black peppers. Lastly, my favorite was the yellow curry beef. Honestly, I could go without the beef on this dish and just add more tofu! The tofu was the highlight of this - pillowy, soaked up all the soup, and every bite was always an explosion of delicious curry flavor. I went to Aung Myanmar to celebrate a friend's birthday and it was wonderful experience. First, it is amazing to have a new addition to Swan's Market, and second, the food was amazing. Somehow I didn't get a photo of the Tea Leaf salad but it was so good, maybe we finished it before I thought to take a photo! We also shared the paratha bread with veggie curry and lettuce wraps, both were flavorful. My entree the namesake noodles were great, the shrimp was juicy and perfectly cooked and the noodles were amazing! The service was quick, helpful, and consistent, and the vibe was quiet to begin with and the busy and full of life by around 7 or so on a Thursday night! Super tasty Burmese food!! I live right down the street and stumbled upon this place a couple months ago, and now I feel so lucky to have this little gem just a 2-minute walk away. Everything is super flavorful! I keep ordering the 9th Street Shrimp every single time because it's just THAT good. My boyfriend has tried the poutine with coconut shrimp, salt and pepper chicken wings, and the Golden Chicken Noodles and has loved everything too. I needed a place close to Marriott for a business lunch and got in touch with Aung Myanmar via their website. Jenny was super helpful in providing menus and getting all the details of our order (regular v. lunch special, spice level, etc). The day of, we were promptly seated and orders came out with the name of the person I provided on the list, making matching the dish to the person super easy (and people forget what they order). Everyone enjoyed their food. I ordered the spicy noodles and I wasn't super excited about them because they had too much sauce. I also tried the tofu options, which to my surprised, featured super firm, pressed tofu. Also wasn't my favorite. However, I tried my coworker's fiery shrimp which was delicious and so was the garlic and pepper shrimp dish. Oh, and Burmese tea salad was delish. 5/5 would definitely order again. Everything was super smooth and very affordable. I'd be happy to dine there again and they made group dining a breeze. The only caveat was that the back of the restaurant's acoustics are really bad! Our favorite dish of the night was the salt and pepper soft shell crab--it was perfectly crispy, well-seasoned, and something we'd order again in a heartbeat. We also loved the whole honey fish, which had the perfect balance of sweet and savory flavors, and the eggplant garlic, which was packed with flavor. Learned of this new Burmese restaurant on social media and checked the Yelp reviews to help confirm what I was hearing - each review was 5 stars ! The location was a little tricky to find as i assumed the restaurant was in the heart of Swans Market but it's actually closer to Clay Street and 9th. We arrived around 5:30pm and were the first customers. By the time we left the place was nearly full. We decided on the tradition tea leaf salad medium spice level, the fiery chicken dish, 2 orders of coconut rice and the palatha bread/curry dipping sauce. Everything was so good and one serving of coconut rice is large enough for two people. The food was so good that I forgot to take pictures . Service was great and we had leftovers for the next day. Come on a Sunday at opening (11am) and the place was empty. We were seated at window seat which was nice. Ordered skillet shrimp with chili sauce, fish noodle soup ( their national dish), mint chicken (not enough mint), and coconut rice (on the sweet side). Great takeout experience from Aung Myanmar. I ordered via DoorDash, the food was ready 20 min earlier than originally expected. The tea leaf salad was just what it should be - crisp and flavorful. The green beans were good, I think next time I'd get them spicier and they'd be great. The mango tofu was top notch, the tofu was springy and toothsome and a great compliment to the mango. Tasty, good service, music was a little louder than necessary, very reasonable prices and portion sizes. I liked that they gave us multiple carafes of water so we could self-serve. I had the mango shrimp lunch special with coconut rice, which came with a side salad. It was all very good, would eat again. Finally! We have an amazing Burmese restaurant in the Oakland/Alameda area. As soon as I heard they opened close to me, I had to give it a try. Growing up, my aunts always made Burmese food for our family gatherings, and as a kid my absolute favorite dish was mohinga (catfish noodle soup). That's always been my benchmark for judging a Burmese restaurant. If the mohinga is good, it's legit. I've tried several Burmese restaurants around the Bay Area over the years and always left a little disappointed... until last night. My wife and I started with the tea leaf salad. They offer it with lettuce, shredded cabbage, or a mix of both. Traditionally it's served with cabbage, but we went with the mix, and it was the perfect way to start the meal. Of course, I ordered the mohinga--it's mandatory anytime I visit a Burmese restaurant for the first time. My wife ordered the chicken biryani. One taste of the mohinga instantly transported me back to my childhood. It was perfect in every way. Rich, comforting, and exactly how I remember it. The chicken biryani was just as impressive, a huge portion with fall-off-the-bone tender chicken and incredibly flavorful rice. We finished everything off with the Dubai chocolate paratha, which was the perfect ending to an outstanding meal. They did not skimp on the crab for the black pepper noodles which were delicious. Chicken briyani didn't feel too heavy, perfect. The palatha appetizer was so light and flaky, not overly greasy, with the side of curry that will convince you to get a full curry entree. If anything, I want the palatha as a full entree size too. Not photo'd were the tea leaf salad that was really nice they give you the option to do cabbage or lettuce. And the garlic string beans always a delicious choice for veggie side. As a burmese born and raised in burma for 18 years, this place insanely 90% tastes authentic. I've tried a handful of burmese place and this is the only place i would recommend! The portion and the prices are really good for the bay! I tried 3 dishes and I loved two of them - mohinga (i think they have it as noodle soup) and chicken biryani. I swear burmese biryani and any biryani i've had in the bay is way different. even then this biryani isn't 100% same taste. I'm excited because I've found my go to burmese place! I love their sticky rice ice cream dessert I literally wanted to go back the next day but couldn't because of schedule conflict but I'm going back there for that tomorrow (a week from the first time i tried it lol).
