Ate lunch here yesterday. My friend and I both had the Al Pastor Burrito with a side of jalepeno sauce. The burrito was very good, as was the sauce. The reason I didn't rate this place 5 stars was because they didn't have any sauce hotter than jalapeno. I would have expected that a place that serves good Mexican food to have a variety of sauces. Personally, I like habanero sauce on my tacos and burritos. In any case, the food was very good and I would not hesitate to eat there again. read more

I stopped in at this taco joint for a quick bite while visiting family a while back. If you have the need for reliable to-go tacos, Backyard Taco will do the job. The salsa bar makes things easier with the ability to pick and choose what you like(although it's hard to not just take them all). Ultimately service was a bit slow for "quick and easy", but you can taste the difference. Came on new years eve with a friend to wrap up 2019. I got 2 pastor tacos and 1 chicken and they were good. I loved the self serve sauce bar and the different salsas were all delicious. I was particularly impressed that there was pineapple with the pastor. There were however some larger chucks of fat in the meats. This place is so CRAZY DELICIOUS!! If those words do not get you running to this place, well then read the rest of this review. Last Friday, this mama bear was craving good carne asada tacos (you know the ones that you get from a food cart in Rocky Point with the runny guac). I did not expect what I was expecting. By 5pm this place has a line out the door. Once you start walking to the entrance you can smell the delicious mesquite grilled meat being cooked to perfection. As the line slowly moved, the more watery my mouth got. I felt like I hit the jackpot once the girl at register asked me what I would like to order. -2 carne asada tacos with all the fixings -1 carne asada quesadilla. After that line was done, you also had to make a dash to the salsa bar. Their salsas are the bomb! Habanero, Red, Green, Pico de Gallo, Radishes, Onions, Limes, Creamy Guac, YOU NAME IT!! I patiently sat for my number to be called and once it did ...OMG HEAVEN. Each bite was inexplicably delicious. I ate every bite. Even the small morsels that fell on my plate. I sat there digesting in disbelief on how I never knew a place so close to home existed. Let's just say I have been telling everyone about this small mom-n-pop shop. They do it RIGHT! So first things first, be careful and conservative when using the red sauce because it is hot! Secondly, get the al pastor tacos. I always base my taco reviews on how the al pastor is because any time I can get my taco with some pineapple, I'm a happy girl. Even though I was sniffling and crying from being too liberal with the red sauce, the avocado crema and horchata not cooling down the blazing inferno in my mouth whatsoever, it was so dang tasty. You can taste the marinade and smokiness even through the heat from the sauce. Get it on the corn tortillas! I also got the carne asada, on a flour tortilla, which I'm not mad about. It was salted heavily and a tad on the drier side so when I come back to BYT, I'll probably get all tacos al pastor. I also got a bean and cheese tostata to share with my friend just so we can try their beans. They're were creamy and flavorful! I like how they put the cheese right on the grill and topped it with beans and another sprinkling of cheese. BYT is amazing! It's probably my favorite place now for tacos. Parking and seating can be a bit challenging at this location so try popping in at the off-peak times. read more

I may loose my Texas residence card for saying this but Backyard Taco has the best street tacos and burritos I've ever tasted! I've been on several occasions and every time it's the same great tasting food. One of my favorites is the Al Pastor Burrito w/ everything, its huge! Some of the other things I've tried are the Tacos Al Pastor, Cheese Quesadillas, Bean and Cheese Burrito, chips and salsa. The carne asada meat looked and felt like beef jerky. The chicken taco had part of a tendon in every single bite. I enjoyed the hot salsa and got my free soda with check-in. Not anything special, I was disappointed with the meat quality and preparation. Interior atmosphere was hectic. The employee ringing orders looked like she hated her job and the employee calling orders was very impatient with guests. It was my first time, so I didn't know I needed to pickup my drink from a different counter. That was poor planning because people were cutting from the drink handoff between the queue over to the food handoff. I don't even want to imagine how taco Tuesday's go. This was my third visit here. Not stellar food by any means, but certainly not the worst I've had. The food is cooked and prepared on the grills in front of you so it's nice to see what they are doing. They have a salsa bar that has been a mess every time I've been here. Outside they have a nice small patio. Inside they only have about 4 tables. The chips are not great. Always stale and flavorless. The salsa ALWAYS tastes like someone dumped Pinesol into it. It has a funny taste like cleaning supplies are nearby. That's literally the best way I can describe it. Tacos are meh. Decent size. Nothing to rave about at all. Meats and poultry grilled in the burritos are okay. This will be the last time I come here. Haven't been impressed with anything here. read more

I recommended meeting a friend here that lives in north Scottsdale after touting how good the food was. This was the closest location to her. Food and friendliness is the same quality as the location in Chandler that I've visited. However if your looking for a quiet place to enjoy your meal, this is NOT the place. This building is a quarter of the size of Backyard Tacos on Stapley and I-60 and the one in Gilbert off of the 202 and Gilbert Rd. It has 4 tables inside and about 8-10 outside on a patio with a mister system. We met there to catch up with each other since we live several miles away from each other, but couldn't for 2 reasons; the loud speaker system employees used to call out order numbers and this large bell they would ring. Again the inside of this store has 4 tables, it is smaller than a Taco Bell. We have no idea what the bell was for but both were loud and annoying. People waiting for orders inside were less than 5' from the counter and you need a speaker to announce their order?!!!?? I suggest try using your inside voice and if the customer is outside THEN use the PA system. We saw a lot of people picking up take out orders and realized why. After enduring this for about 1.5hrs we left because it was too difficult to have a conversation. Next time we will go to the I-60 location just a few miles south that doesn't have all this racket! read more

Visited this spot based on Yelp reviews. Loved loved their food. I had a Adobada and asada taco. I had carne asada with flour and birria on corn. The flour tortilla got cold fast and it got a bit dry so I will probably just get corn moving forward. I tried a bite from my bfs Adobada quesadilla and it was very flavorful. They have a salsa bar with pickled onions, radishes and cucumber. I loved that. It def made me feel like I was eating authentic Mexican tacos. Having tried many tacos in the are this is by far one of my favorites. All of their salsas were great especially the birria salsa, it was spicy. The chips we're good and flaky I would go back just to get chips and salsa. read more

I like the atmosphere and the history of the place. Everything tastes traditional and you can see everything cooking. I went to the one on University in Mesa. Great service, but the one draw back (we went in summer) was the flies! Because of the smells and the amount of food coming out of that place, it doesn't surprise me, but still, it's a little frustrating to have to compete with the flies to see who can eat more of your meal. read more

Great tacos, and love the salsa selection, especially the tatemada. Meat was well prepared, especially the steak which is diced very fine.

So this place didn't disappoint. The birria was good in flavor, a little on the dry side but not anything a little lime and salsa. The carne and pastor were also dry but lacking in flavor.. the corn tortillas I think should be grilled with a little fat to give them that authentic crisp. They were kind of falling apart. Honestly I thought I would be disappointed in the size but they were actually good. They have Mexican coke and a salsa bar. The place was pretty packed but food came out fairly quickly. The restrooms were cleaned and didn't stink. Now if I would have just tried the tacos I would have given them a 3 star review but the gorditas with beans and cheese was amazing. This is what you should be coming to try. The beans didn't taste canned and the cheese was delicious. They deserve the 4 star because of that, my husband ended up order 2 more and he normally doesn't like gorditas. If you are in the area, you should give them a try. read more

The charm of Mesa is that with one leisurely jaunt down to a just about any street corner - you can cash your paycheck, pawn a few items from your grandmother's estate, and/or grab some pretty decent cheap mexican food. So in that sense - BT is really nothing special. Good, cheap, and authentic hole-in-the-walls are on almost every corner in these parts. But for some reason the gringos and their BMWs keep rolling in here and acting as if you need to go out of your way to find a decent taco in Mesa. I disagree. The meat here is literally diced to the point of being mince. Flavorful - but the tiny bits are overly diced and thus are kind of like eating pebbles of well-spiced beef. We had our tacos wrapped in mini flour tortillas - the tortillas were a bit stale/stiff - not great. The best part of BT is their salsa bar, which includes sliced cucumbers and pickled onions - though their pico and salsas were pretty ordinary. Small but nice patio plus a few large picnic tables alongside the parking lot. Overall 3.5 stars. Come if you like safety in numbers - as this place seemingly is always busy. Tried this place because my son recommended it and we are all enduring the Covid 19 self quarantine. Best recommendation ever! Had been craving good Mexican food and that's what I got. Went here this past Tuesday with my girl friend, who had been here before. I was kind of expecting to be disappointed since I come from California and had yet to have something close to a true authentic Taqueria (aside from the Mexican ranch markets) in Arizona. I am not super happy about the service. I asked to swap in sour cream for quac. They said no problem and also made sure cheese came in by burrito. I got the bill and got upcharged over 1$ for a tiny bit of sour cream and another 1$ for cheese. It ended up being a 10$ burrito. They are not that big. Food was good.
