I love the concept of having a playground near eating tables. My son was able to have a blast paying and I was able to enjoy a nice meal with my family, such a win-win! We've been here twice, once for a Yelp event and once for a Margarita Festival hosted by the International Margarita Organization. Both experiences were great. It was packed like sardines, but somehow it wasn't overwhelming or too difficult to get service. The food was amazing both times we went (we ordered from the restaurant rather than the event we attended) The first time we went, the food was spectacular and service timing was appropriate for how busy it was. Today when we went, they were out of pico de gallo, but we also ordered a bit later in the evening so I'd expect to be out of small things like pico. They ended up replacing it with avocado on the nachos so I certainly feel that makes up for such a small first world inconvenience. Quite honestly, I don't even care for pico all that much anyway! We also ordered hot buffalo wings which were delicious. It was packed today yet the food came out SO fast. I get wings and nachos don't take long to cook, but with how packed the event was and the restaurant being open, I expected a longer wait. The food was good, we had wings and pizza and the drinks were well made. The service was average, our order came out timely. What makes this place stand out is their large outdoor area. There is turf, multiple deck areas with picnic tables and covering for shade and even a play area off to the side for kids. They even have a stage area outside for live music. Came for a quick lunch. I think this place is a bar and food is an afterthought. The Ceasar salad was honestly the best thing we had here. We added chicken and it was delicious! They didn't skimp either. The classic burger was ok, nothing special. The fries are ok. We also had hummus spread. We should've known better, it wasn't very good. The flatbread wasn't bad. This is classic bar food. I'm wary of rating an establishment like this, because normally the food isn't the best. Just left Backyard on Broadway with my boyfriend and our kids. We walked into the restaurant and was greeted by only a sign "please wait to be seated" we stood there for ~6/7 minutes and waited patiently, as other patrons walked right into the back past the sign. The kids took pictures so we weren't in an imminent rush to be seated, but after no one approached us after several minutes we figured maybe the sign was outdated and we decided to walk to where the tables were. The hostess finally approached us (not even looking at us) and said "are you joining a party already here" I said "no we're not, we are a party of 4." And she (still not looking at us) pointed in the direction of the front door "go back to the host stand where it says 'wait to be seated." I said "well, we were there for several minutes and no one came up to us." She walked away without apologizing for the wait, without any explanation. We left and went to Down on Grayson. Way better service, where we were IMMEDIATELY greeted by multiple hostesses and workers and seated within 30 seconds. Thanks for the shitty first time experience, we won't be back! read more

Tried out Backyard on Broadway mainly so my kid could run around and burn some energy in the park area but I ended up loving the chill, laid-back vibe! Our server was super sweet and checked on us often, which I really appreciated. We ordered quite a few different things, and overall, they were okay. My husband got the chili cheese dog and really enjoyed it ! There was lots of cheese and looked amazing! The root beer cream soda was a miss for me though. I was expecting something fizzy, but it wasn't carbonated at all. The caramel churros were unfortunately really hard, and the Frito pie came out cold and kind of bland. BUT the pizza totally made up for it. It was so good, and I honestly could've eaten the whole thing myself if it wasn't for my kid. The kids' chicken strips were also really fresh and tasty! We have been back 3 times in the past 6 weeks! Everything continues to be amazing, from service to the food. We have been disappointed though that each time we return, they do not have the Japanese seltzer. We have been back on a Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We really enjoy those drinks and keep hoping they will be in stock. New things we have tried are the PB&J pizza, rum punch, and churros. We have had the wings with hot honey and the cheese pizza for our kids every time. All hot and amazing. One time they accidentally burned the pizza, but quickly replaced it and added in some churros, which were crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Amazing. I think we are regulars at this point! Kids love the playground and there are always other kiddos to play with. Excellent music too! read more

I had the weirdest experience here this past weekend. I came out of town to visit and my family chose this place to hang at. They made a reservation online for a table of 18 for 6pm. We were late, I will admit fault to that however when we arrived we were told by the hostess they were backed up but that they would get our tables ready and we would be waited on first. We stuck around in the front for a while however we had kids who were getting antsy and the front was getting crowded. We walked to the back to get out of the way to see what seemed like a 100 open tables. When we walked out the hostess or server, not sure what she was, followed us. When we asked her if we could find a table she said that was fine but we just would not have a waiter for a while as they were backed up. Which was fine for us because we just wanted to sit down and the kids wanted to play. I personally asked her that if we wanted to order at the bar would that be ok and she said yes. Honestly, the bar service was probably the only good service I received in my short visit. After waiting about 30 minutes we KINDLY asked if we had an eta for a server. This man who claimed was the GM came to us in the most rudest manner. He spoke to us as if we were children. Belittled us and scolded us for being late. When we tried to explain that his hostess allowed us to find a table he kept saying "I'm not calling you a liar but I don't believe you" his attitude was awful! It was like he was dying for a viral moment. That was not our intent or ammo. He tried to compare the reservation experience to that of a restaurant but honestly they are not the same. A restaurant gives you a grace period, they text you to confirm, they provide proper communication and make the accommodations. After we were done speaking with the so called GM. We saw him walking over to employees and pointing to us as if his intent was to make us feel uncomfortable on purpose. We told him we would be on our way after we finished the drinks we payed for. On the way out he stood at the door proudly holding and offering his card as if he had waited for a moment like this to happen. I told him first impressions were everything and this was by far the worst experience I have ever had in San Antonio. There were dozens of dirty tables, what seemed like 3 workers, and a wait process that does not seem to be working. If you look at the Google reviews they are similar and he's on there responding in the same nasty attitude we received. No accountability, no empathy, and certainly not the acts of a "GM" I will never return. They should have left it the way it was prior to these changes.
