WAIT....FOR....IT......It's a dumpity, dump, dump, dump!! Let me just say - BE PREPARED TO WAIT because that's what you'll do here. I tried this place a couple years ago, and I was not really a fan, but I decided to give it another shot since they have a pretty large patio that seems somewhat inviting. First off, we walked to our table on the patio and had to go through many clouds of smoke. It was disgusting! I went to the restroom when we first got there and only one stall was working, and this meant I had to stand in a really long line full of obnoxious drunk, trashy women. It was horrible. It took me about 20 minutes before I was able to get back to the table. My husband still hadn't gotten his drink at that point. When I got to the table, it still took another 10 minutes before his beer even came. Based on that experience, we decided just to order some appetizers instead of a full meal. The server took our order and came back to our table two times within the next ten minutes or so to ask us what we ordered again, telling me 1) that he had not put in our order yet, and 2) he's an idiot! It again took a very long time for the food to arrive, and while we were waiting, we had the pleasure of smelling the smoke from all the tables next to us. When the food came, it was looked extremely unappealing. The tuna tasted okay, but still not very good. The crab cakes had a nice amount of crab, but it only included two pretty small ones. Overall, our trip here, to order one beer and three appetizers took one hour and 20 minutes!! This place sucks! read more

I came in today around 1:45PM or so to have a couple of beers and possibly a bite to eat, just killing some time before heading home after a long trip. I sat down at the small tables alongside the bar, closer to the outside section. Unfortunately, I sat there alone for 10+ minutes and nobody asked if I'd like a drink, menus, etc. I finally just got up and walked out... too many choices for that nonsense to happen. The place wasn't that busy and it only takes 10 seconds to acknowledge a customer. I do come here from time to time (5 or 6 times a month) as do many of my friends and coworkers. Takes a long time to get service and when you do get service, they take off without asking if everything is okay. Also when you order appetizers, they bring them along with your main course. I have eaten here a few times now, which was never my choice. Their food is below average and it always smells like there was a huge beer party the night before and no one bothered to clean up. It is dark and dirty and the walls and decor is worn. The wait staff is terrible and the last time (last time I will ever go there) I was there it was as if the waiter was trying to pick my girlfriend up. I don't think so, chief. My dish once came out cold and the manager seemed as if he couldn't care less. Brunch on Sundays is incredibly overpriced and NOT appetizing, the food is always cold and the guy who makes the omelets and carves the meat is unfriendly. Lost me as a customer when I walk into an outdoor patio filled with cigarette smoke and am told cigars have to go sit in the corner by themselves isolated from everyone. It's policy. Maybe had I not seen the "Rules" posted outside of the place I wouldn't have gone in with my negative attitude. Being that I don't drink beer, their beer specials meant nothing to me, and my friend was raving about the nachos and how these were the best nachos ever. 1. I do not like chili on my nachos. You have the option for chicken, but my vote was overruled. 2. There's an Anita's across the street. The nachos didn't suck, but if that was supposed to be enough to draw me in there, methinks not. I almost hate that I wasted a trip to Chantilly and cheated on what I consider to be one of the best Tex-Mex places in the area. It's... okay? Not great, not bad, just okay. Problem is, you don't want a restaurant to just be "okay". You want it to be great. Really good. The Backyard Grill is not that place. I've been here a few times with coworkers, and each time I've left disappointed. The Reuben? Tastes great, but the soggy bread accompanied with squishy fries is just missing the mark. It tastes great, but you don't want your food to feel sloppy. Ahi tuna salad? Chewy, fatty and ridiculously expensive ($16) for the value. The burgers are pretty tasty if not a bit dry. The Backyard Grill is bar food, bar food that tries to be more than it is, fancier than it should be and it doesn't achieve its goal. Food, I am disappoint. I want you to be delicious and tasty, but you leave me wanting. Add in mediocre wait service and it's just not hitting high points. I think they could be a 3 if they paid attention to service. Nothing awesome to say about backyard... Most of the stories about this place are true... But they try... I've been going here off and on for about 15 years, and although the staff has changed and the layout of the bar and restaurant have changed, barely anything else has been updated, and very little has been improved. A few of the improvements... Indoor bar has been expanded and has a much more "open" feel, no smoking at the indoor bar. Expanded outdoor bar (only place to smoke) with a covered/in closed area for 4 season use, very affordable beer. Big bonus, this establishment is open at many times that others are not! One of the few places you can escape your family on Thanksgiving or Christmas. Cheap beer... This is YOUR place!!! Desire to meet the locals who want cheap beer... This is definitely YOUR place!!! Want to spend quality time with locals who have been drinking cheap beer for A LONG TIME... not hours, years..... Maybe decades... This is THE PLACE to be!!! Staff are "not bad", most seem like this is exactly where they would be if they were not working. At least they "care". The menu is ok, nothing special but better than many local bars. So I went there with my husband last night about 10: 40 pm. We wanted to sit outside since my husband wanted to smoke. As we walked in the bartender asked us where we wanted to sit, wd said outside he said to just grab a seat. We went out and waited for service for a bit. Knowing the kitchen closes at 11 we wanted our order to be taken quick. Finally after 15 minutes our drinks order was taken which was one rum and coke and one coke no ice which took 10 minutes to come. We ordered our food after that. One steak medium well with mash and veggies and a BYG burger medium well. The food took about 27 minutes to come. The steak came with fries. When we asked the waiter he aaid oh the kitchen closed at 11 and they dumped all the mash. He could of told us that when we first ordered. My burger was medium rare. I could nit eat it. I talked to the waiter and he said he would get a manager. She came and took my plate saying the my food was "on the house" and offered me a chicken quesadillas. She later came to complaint how the GM had resigned that same monday and the cooks left at 11 pm and there was a manager cooking in the back and he didnt know what he was doing. I got the food (which was aweful... btw). We then seen the manager change her clothes and sit at the bar smoking. We asked for the bill and they still charged me for my burger. At that point I was so frusterated with the service, I just paid it. Here is my tip for you. 1.Train the waiter to provide better serice 2. Never blame another coworker. It just shows that there is no teamwork. 3.When you say the food is "on the house" immediately go and void it from the order on the screen. read more

Atmosphere: If you're from the area - you know better than anyone that if you want to go for drinks on any given night and it's past 8pm - you go to Backyard. It's just what you do. Backyard has such a mixed crowd and it's impossible to pin point where anyone is from on any given evening. They could be out-of-towners staying at local hotels, they could work in the area trying to avoid traffic, they could be locals, or just love coming to Backyard in general. That's what makes this place fun - the people. I have an overly social friend who loves making new friends every time we go out. This is the perfect place for him and it seems as if people come here to mingle and be social as well versus other bars where they either keep to themselves or stay with the friend(s) they went with. Tuesday's and (I think) Friday's are Beer Pong so expect to see a good crowd of people those nights. Food: I really like the food here. It can be pricey, but it's definitely worth it. I recently noticed they have a Groupon available so that gives people an opportunity to try out different items on their menu. I don't think I've ever ordered anything I didn't like here. Happy hour: I have a bunch of different spots I like to go to, but I will say that happy hour at Backyard during summer and early fall is really nice because of the outside patio. That's especially when I can't pin point the crowd because I think people come from all over for the vibez. They have a lot of their appetizers on discount for happy hour but I'm not sure what their drink specials are. Came here for the paint nite party last night. Arrived early so waited at the bar to meet the rest of the group. The bartender, Brian, was great. Super friendly and told us what the happy hour specials were. The female bartender, barely looked up. At one point, we even said that we would wait for Brian because it was impossible to get her attention. We had heard the kitchen was very slow so we also ordered immediately. It took about 20 minutes for the food to come out. We got charged 50 cents for ranch dressing. 50 cents. It is marked on the bill as "daily special." I've never been charged anywhere (especially fine dining or steak houses) for a side of ranch. The paint party was great. Luke, the host, was wonderful. This is the only reason I would come back. **To answer the managers question** 1) No it was not because the dressing was 50 cents. If you look at all the reviews I've made, I do go to nice restaurants. Last weekend, I spent $100 at dinner. So it's not a matter of cost, it's a matter of quality and customer service. That's what Yelp is about. 2) If you want my honest opinion, the place is not a 5 star place. I walked in, it smells like smoke and it's your typical neighborhood, regulars bar. 3) I don't know what to tell you as far as the timeliness of the food. This is my preferred local watering hole. Monday is Trivia Night. Thursday - Sat has a DJ w/ hip hop type music (although once I went and they tried to charge me a $5 cover on a Sat night...and I went somewhere else). Sunday is Karaoke, I think. Anyways, drinks are decent, very friendly bar tenders, and lots of regulars. Plenty of TVs to check out your sports games, and the best freakin patio ever. Summer this is the "to go" place. First time customer. I ordered in (hangover), and overall am satisfied. Of course food is not as good as it could be if I were to dine in, but it was still better than I expected. I ordered the Chicken Penne Pasta, and thought I needed a side, Mashed Potatoes, but I was sorely mistaken. The pasta was plenty, so I have leftovers for lunch at work tomorrow. The chicken was a little dry, but as stated before I'm sure it's moist and tender if you were to dine in. I would rate 4 stars, but the full 5 because the guy that delivered my food was super hot and I think I enjoyed my meal more because he delivered it. I give this place a one star cause there is nothing lower. The atmosphere is ok but the bar service sucked badly. If you ask for a top shelve drink they use we'll alcohol and charge you do top shelve. And do dare question the bartender specially if she is young. You will get the attitude of a two year old and of course her fellow coworkers will make excuses for her and if you ask for the manager he will disappear and is never to be found. We have been here3-4 times already. We have enjoyed the food every time. Cheese steak, salmon Alfredo pasta, hickory salmon, Caesar salad w/salmon, chicken tenders. The salmon has always been outstanding. The Alfredo pasta (twice) has been very buttery and kind of sweet. All has been worth while. The Manager here is VERY attentive. He keeps an eye on everything and everyone. The service could be slow, like last night. Busy and they forgot about us for 15 minutes. We saw the waiter twice. Even regretted asking for a to-go box. I usually don't give bad reviews but this was just not a good visit to backyard grill. I would have given BG a 5 star rating until my co workers and I encountered the outside bartender named Britney. We were sitting at the bar inside, our bartender was a blonde woman (who was wonderful-don't remember her name but on the receipt it says "server-PM BAR 11" we visited BG on 7/31/2018 @ 1030pm. ...At the time we asked for a menu to order food as our bartender was busy, A co worker asked the bartender Britney for a menu. Not only did Britney ignore the request for a menu, she responded with " they are right here, your bartender will get them for you , I'm the outside bartender just passing through". As my two coworkers were talking, Britney chimed in and said rudely that My coworker needs to stop talking under her breath, when my coworker told her she was not talking to her, she was talking to me. read more

Poor, poor misunderstood Backyard :/ I'm giving it a solid 3-stars cuz I can't give it 3.5...their beer selection sucks(kind of goes without saying, this IS Northern VA, afterall) and their inside seating/dining space is a bit of a joke, but the patio here kicks mucho ass. Service is great-some of the friendliest bartenders around-and the crowd is a nice mix of people generally, with the occasional asshole thrown in for good measure. One complaint that I won't lay on the establishment itself...their trivia night has to be the WORST that I've ever been to. I have now visited the Backyard Grill three times. I will reiterate an earlier posting. My initial review over a year ago beat up on this place because of a phone call. I have now visited three times with my family on a Friday evening and feel qualified to give a full assessment. Excellent, excellent and excellent... I maintain that the Backyard Grill has the best burger in the NOVA area. It is always cooked perfectly to order. The other dishes look delicious. I will try something else one of these days, but Friday night is my brew and burger night. The service is outstanding. In addition, it is a real local place, and I say that with all positive intent: friendly and lots of folks from the area. Also, pricing - very fair and reasonable. Whether you live in the area or are driving by on the highway, this is a place you should check out. I have only had dinner, but also notice that they offer breakfast and lunch. read more

The girl working the hostess station was very sweet..big smile, welcoming, well done. That's where it ended. The bartender(I won't name) was absent except to talk to a few regulars..his stories of favorite porno movies, "not drinking or doing coke on the job like he used to" got old fast...his fellow bartender worked a bit harder to please her guests. I usually only make it to Backyard when my bar nearby closes early and I have just enough time to make it for a couple drinks before last call. The staff is great and the drinks are decently priced. I like going in the summertime when the outside portion is open although that's when it gets a lot more packed. I've never tried the food at the Chantilly location, but was NOT impressed with the food at the Manassas one. I think what I like best about backyard is the trivia games they have. My friend included me in a group text that she was having her Birthday get-together here. I had never been and was excited to see that since I was obligated to go, there was a Groupon, so I purchased one for me and one as a gift for my bff. I arrived around 8 on a Saturday night and got a parking spot right in front. It was unusually bright inside but also very casual and laid back. I took a quick walk around and outside to look for those in my group. There's an outside patio area that looks really nice, wish it was warmer. To get there you have to walk thru the smoking room. This is SO cool if you are a smoker and I would have loved this place if I knew about it when I was. Now that I haven't had a cigarette in almost 3 years it was a little intolerable. I went inside and took a seat at the bar. I sat there for almost 10 minutes. No menu, no drink....just smelling myself and how I reeked of smoke and wondered how I stunk like that for 30 years. There were 2 bartenders and even a manager who walked right past me numerous times. At one point I think I even made eye contact with one. I was finally greeted by someone and asked them for a menu. There were many things to choose from and the menu was really fancy compared to the atmosphere. I wouldn't have guessed in a million years that this place offered brunch. I guess as the saying goes you can't judge a book by its cover. I ordered the NY Strip steak and asked for sautéed mushrooms and onions on top. They brought a huge salad out to start with that looked amazing but pretty bland considering how drenched in dressing it was. My entree arrived in a timely manner but missing my add ons. Victor got them out for me quickly. Really quickly and practically raw. The steak was the skinniest NY Strip I've ever seen. However it smelled terrific and I was starving. Come to find out this steak had been super tenderized or something that pounded it thin but it was full of fat and gristle. I ordered it medium and it was overcooked but understandably considering the thinnesss it would be practically impossible to get a pink center. I was really excited about this meal and was left so disappointed. It was also super salty and I barely ate a 1/3 if it. I didn't even bring it home for my dogs because I thought it might be bad for their blood pressure. If I was paying the full asking price of $27 I would have totally sent it back. Lol When I told the bartender that I had a Groupon he gave me a disgusted look and let out some type of scowling laugh. I don't know how to describe it exactly but he was some how not happy that I had this discount and told me it was going to be "a while". I told him it was fine because I wasn't in a hurry. His manager came an took my voucher then never returned. I finally had to ask someone for the check to see how much I still owed. I have worked at places in the past that offer a Groupon. Sometimes when it comes to tipping, customers do not understand that servers and bartenders still pay taxes on the total amount AND have to tip out on the total amount before discount. When customers tip on the lower amount, the end result is that it costs the server money to wait on you. I am a good Tipper due to being in the business and I felt like I was treated less than that because of the Groupon that I held. I tipped appropriately and above and beyond the service that I received. When I got home and looked at the receipt I realized they gave me a $27 discount instead of the 30 Dollar one that I purchased. I'm sure it is because that the remaining balance was alcohol. Needless to say I would have liked to have known and probably would have bought my girlfriend whose birthday it was a piece of cake. I am giving two stars because the music was great inside and outside and the patrons and customers seemed to be having a great time and that's what really matters. read more

Lady smoking a bar. I complained because we had a table full of children and smoking is not allowed at restaurants and they did nothing about it. Manager ignored our complaint and receptionist approached me while I was leaving restaurant and asked why I was complaining about it and if we had an allergy or something! What does it matter, smoking is not allowed in restaurants. Health Dept will be getting a call since Manager ignored me and didn't asked the lady to stop smoking at bar. Went here with a friend the other night for the first time, the hostess was friendly and sat us down outside. That was about the only nice experience we had. We shut our menus so the server would know we were ready. We sat there for a little over 10 minutes until we decided to leave. It wasn't comforting to know that at least two servers walked by us and one was cleaning off a table behind us while we were looking around to try to order. My wife and I wanted to find the perfect casual "date night" spot and were THRILLED to discover The Backyard Grill. We went with the chicken fajitas and also the shrimp alfredo with sun dried tomatoes - awesome choice! The manager Shelly stopped by our table and was an absolute delight. It was obvious how important everyone having a great dining experience meant to her. Our waiter Pablo was terrific and made us feel right at home. If you are looking to step out and enjoy a tasty meal in a fun and upbeat atmosphere with plenty of TV's on the walls showing all sorts of sports games, then you'll be very impressed and satisfied. Dinner with Friends: I don't recall the dinner or service being horrible or conversely anything over the top. While I wouldn't go here willingly because I think there are better options in the surrounding area, I also wouldn't not go here if someone wanted to eat here. Service and food was fine, no complaints but also nothing to get overly excited over. Happy Hour: Went here on a Thursday recent for a Happy Hour and it was quite crowded so seems like a good place for a Happy Hour as an alternative to Reston Town Center or Fairfax Corner. read more

Came for lunch for first time. When I opened the door I immediately smelled that familar smell of old spilt beer. I almost turned around and left. Since the hostess greeted me immediately I stayed. The dining room is unremarable except that they have a nice sound system playing 80s music. The menu was mainly burgers and sandwiched and averaged 8-9 dollars for either. I thought the prices were high for the place. I ordered a turkey burger with cheese. Service was quick and I was pleasantly surprised that both the burger and fries were tasty. Unfortunately this appears to be the Chantilly area designated "Smokers Bar"....so unless you enjoy swallowing a large dose of "Au De Winston" with your meal, I would avoid. I was pleasantly surprised by the brunch here. $24.95 for a champagne brunch buffet. It included 2 glasses of champagne/mimosas, and a very large, varietal buffet. The food was good too, great scrambled eggs that they keep refilling. Awesome grits. Shrimp, pancakes and French toast, an omelet station, roast beef station, and waffle station. That's not even all of it. They had a full BBQ spread as well. Without the champagne it was only $20 a person, totally reasonable. To top it off, we sat outside on the patio and it was lovely. They open up the whole restaurant and have tables with umbrellas. Very impressed for a place that is technically a local watering hole and busy bar at night. I would definitely go back. read more
