What a great place to have brunch after a great week in Scranton, PA! Sat at the outside bar and weather was wonderful. Service was incredible. Everyone checked on us and we're so pleasant! Service was quick and we got our food in a pretty quick amount of time. Food was top notch! Breakfast burger was cooked great and sooo tasty! Over all wonderful experience. read more

I just left this place I live about ten blocks away. I understand about the covic, but it was ten o'clock on Wednesday night maybe eight people in the whole place. I have one jack and coke and a order of mild wings to go. A orderof wings is only eight. The bill was over twenty dollars and when I got home the wings where so dried out they were inedible. Never again. read more

This is one of my favorite local bars. The pizza is amazing, the bar staff is amazing, and the management sure as shit has their head in the game. the past two years have been incredibly difficult for restaurants and bars and I'm so glad Shannon and the crew pulled through it. love you guys!!! read more

Amazing drinks and atmosphere (especially the outdoor area). I've never had a less-than-great server here. Make a reservation in advance! Highly recommend :) read more

It is great that most days of the year you can get to choose between eating inside, or in the backyard. Good variety of beers, and typically a good menu. Try the chili. read more

The food was surprisingly great. We ordered takeout and they got half the order wrong, but the food was awesome and decently priced so we were okay with it. read more

One of the best places to eat in Scranton. Great staff and great atmosphere. Go here weekly

Pretty good bar food with average prices. We walked in and walked all the way through to the back and sat down (I believe it must be open seating) and I had the BBQ sampler which included pulled chicken sliders, some ribs, and pulled pork quesadillas. The sliders were slathered in BBQ sauce and too covered in sauce in my opinion. The ribs were good and the pulled pork quesadillas were definitely the best part of the meal. The food did take about 35 minutes to come out which was surprising considering that we were one of three groups in the whole place. My friend's enjoyed their food and we split two orders of fries between the five of us and that was plenty. Almost everything on the menu is a sandwich and the fries are extra so look out for that! Might return if I'm ever in Scranton again. read more

Good beer, but pretty rude and wasteful by giving samples in plastic cups that are thrown directly in the trash. That shit adds up... Edit: Thank you for the response. The cups you use are not recyclable https://www.google.com/amp/naturalsociety.com/recycling-symbols-numbers-plastic-bottles-meaning/amp/ . The word rude was referring to the service of the bar tender. read more

Made a reservation due to covid for outdoor seating. The food is delicious, we all loved the cowboy burger, the chicken tenders for the 10 year old and a breakfast burrito. Great way to come out of quarantine!! read more

Pretty neat atmosphere. Big open space at back of bar which is perfect for Covid. They are taking lots of precautions. The food was good, nothing in particular that stands out as something I have to have again. The fries were delicious, fresh-cut. The service was mediocre. They sat us immediately but for some reason needed to take our name and phone number s if they were going to text when the table was ready. Our waitress wasn't in as big a hurry as us. We waited for everything - refills, the check, condiments, for her to check on us. Service is more important to me than the food so I was disappointed. read more

Great place: great food great beer and great service on a very quiet Sunday. Would gladly visit this place again!

Service is very mediocre and menu is very typical of a burger and bar establishment. Atmosphere is great however and always lively with young crowd. Great portions for appetizers and entrees, especially for the price. read more

I came here by myself to kill a little time so I sat at the bar. It was a Saturday afternoon and there was a sign outside saying that they had a feature craft beer for $3. I asked which one it was (it was a pale ale) and I ordered it because that's a pretty good deal! There were nice TVs above the bar. I also ordered a cup of chili which was amazing. It had such a good flavor that it made me wish I had ordered the bowl. The bartenders were attentive and friendly and it had a nice atmosphere. Apparently there's a patio in the back but I didn't check it out. read more

Backyard Ale House - Bars Near Me - Scranton, Pennsylvania

I had more commonly known Backyard Ale House as a destination for a party on late weekend nights, as it turns into somewhat of a college bar after about 10:00pm Friday and Saturday. But after finally coming here during normal hours I discovered it is a great place to grab a bite to eat. The food is fantastic and the beer selection is phenomenal. The menu offers your typical American bar foods... sandwiches, burgers, etc... and a wide array of beers from your everyday pick to a variety of seasonal choices. There is an outdoor patio which is great for the summer. During the winter they actually bring out a tent and space heaters to utilize the patio as the indoor section of the bar/restaurant is rather small. If you like a party, Backyard Ale House is a great destination to visit on Friday and Saturday nights. If you aren't into that scene I would stay away from here after 9:00pm on the weekends. At work we have ordered food from Backyard Ale House for lunch, putting in large orders, and never having any issues. Overall a great restaurant/bar, I highly recommend checking it out. read more

Backyard Ale House is a phenomenal food & drink spot. It's my favorite place for a get-together with friends. Their food is wonderful. I highly recommend their handmade chips & dip, seasonal patio salad, Nashville chicken sandwich, and their smoked BBQ menu. Their outdoor patio is the best place to sit & relax. Backyard Ale House never disappoints. read more

I was in Scranton for work this week and found Backyard Ale House Thursday, for lunch. I wish I would have found it earlier in the week. The only thing better than meal, was my service! The outstanding attitude of my waitress (I wish i could remember her name) and the clean, open air patio made for a great afternoon. Backyard Ale House's food menu and beer choices have something to satisfy anyone. The next time I'm in town, I'll start here on Monday! read more

Highly recommend this place. We came from NJ yesterday to see a show at a place in the area and we came here for dinner and drinks before. THe boneless wings were AMAZING and the burger and fresh cut fries were VERY good. And every single person that worked there was SO nice! Friendly, attentive service. They even went above and beyond to make sure a drink was gluten free for my friend. If we're ever back in the area, we will definitely be back! read more

One of the best beer gardens in Lackawanna county. During the summer they open the backyard and it's lively with good food, a variety of beers and drinks, great music, and friendly staff. Some nights they have a live band. The buffalo wings are some of the best in town. Definitely a place to eat and chill on a Friday night under the string lights in the heart of Scranton. read more

Food options are very limited, no steak on the menu it's a sandwich and burger place. Salad was fantastic, and the beer menu is unrivaled. Hundreds of bottles to choose from and I counted 20 beers on tap, plus the waiter helped me with my hunt for a great ipa. Sandwhichs are good not great, and vegetarian options very limited. If you are looking for a burger and beer this is 5 star, need to please everyone? 3 star read more

Slick, smooth and always on the groove. My man bobby referred me to this place, said it had all the beautiful women, jams and it was a nice hangout spot. All my fellas came, we had it jumping like 1989 in that place. The bouncers were cool and confident, especially the long haired Asian fella. I like his style. Drinks were great, got me bopped like baby bottle! I recommend Backyard to any fella or lady in the world. Big SLICKSTA STYLE read more

Busy for a Saturday afternoon. But good service and great beer selection. Worth a stop.

Nice place, good crowd, sometimes see convicts like Kathleen K. LOL. and sometimes have their body guards around them. Convicts draw crowds. So makes it a cool place. LOL. Good beer selection. read more

First time here while at school. I loved it! Went with some friends on a Saturday day night. No wait which was great! The food was delicious. The decor was very unique and the music was awesome. I got the eggplant sandwich with fries. It was so good. The bread was nice and crispy and the pesto was a nice touch. Got a side of fries which could have been a little more crispy but the spice was good. Friend also for the eggplant sandwich. She got it with cheese but wished the bread was less croissant vibe. Friend got the Mexicali burger. She said it was very good. She would have liked more guacamole on the burger as well as the pico on the side as it made the bun a little mushy. The fries were delicious. The pickle was floppy but it was nice and sour which we all enjoyed. Friend got the spicy chicken sandwich. It was a little to spicy but very good. Other friend got chicken cheddar BLT. She said it was great. The wait for the food was long, but it was good so that's okay. The silver ware was not study and bent very easily. I liked the plastic water cups and def plan on coming back!! read more

My husband and I stopped at Backyard Ale House for drinks after a late dinner. The place was lively, crowded and a bit loud on a Saturday night! They have a great selection of draft beer and we selected to try a local stout that hands down is our new favorite! Sunday Mole' Stout from Weyerbacher Brewing Co, Easton, PA.. Wow!!! this beer has all the qualities of a great stout! Smokiness, coffee, chocolate.. uhmm!! Yumm!!! read more

I believe this to be my third review of this business. This will be my last, as I will not be returning. I took a few days to think about this review, and I could not find one saving grace about my last and ultimately final experience here. My last encounter with this bar staff took place on Friday January 31, 2014. Several of my friends started their evening out there, so I met them. I arrived around 7 p.m. I missed happy hour, no big deal there. The Ale House was still in dinner service and the tables were all full, but the bar was pretty empty. I was greeted by a friend sitting at the bar, having a pint. Talked to him for a short period of time and got a beer at the bar. This should have been my first indication. A $6 beer cost me $8... OK this bar was always terrible with over charging. I then sauntered over to the table where the friends I was there to meet were sitting. After a while of the pleasantries, I look down in a fit of despair. My pint was infact empty. This being a terrible situation to find oneself in, I made the decision right then and there to make it my lifes mission to replenish my beer. Off I went. I journeyed over to the bar, where at this point the only three patrons occupying bar stools. They being my friend and two people he was with. With myself at the bar that made FOUR people with three bartenders standing behind the bar. All three looked at me, one was no more than four feet away, and none of them served me. Now to be clear, I had my EMPTY pint glass on the inside edge of the bar and a $10 bill in my hand up in the air like an S.O.S call for beer if you will. I stood there for at least 5 minutes (this is the only kind remark I will make in this review, because I was there for longer than 5 minutes and it certainly felt like an eternity) before a bartender came over to take my order. SIDEBAR: This is the second time the bar was dead and I stood there for an extended period of time while being ignored by the bar staff at this establishment. Though last time I waited for nearly 20 minutes with only two other partons at the bar. After I finally got a bartender I was poured a different pint of life saving ale. Thankfully it is winter and not the dead of summer. Otherwise I may have died from dehydration while waiting so long for my again extremely over priced pint. Again I ordered a beer in the $6 range and was charged $8.50. After this last pint, I did what I can only say took all the strength of 50 men to do. I refrained from drinking yet another overpriced pint and standing abandoned at the bar while bartenders look, but do not touch tap handles. I did this for a half an hour or more waiting begrudgingly in this establishment for my friends to finish up so we could move on to greener pastures. And there are many, many, many, many, many greener pastures in town. Several only a pint glass lob away from this very address. So to recap. Service at the Backyard Ale House- If I could give them ZERO stars I would. I will admit I have had OK (but never even close to average) service here at times,. But the bad service has been more frequent than the acceptable service. Even with a bar devoid of customers and fully stocked with bartenders, one will still wait for service for a long time. Price at the Backyard Ale House. Again I would give ZERO stars if that was an option. Always over priced. I recommend you take a walk around either corner to Adams or Washington to get a much better bar experience. Their prices are right and the service is.... well there is actually service. A note to management, do not ask me to re-review your bar again. I will not. Edit 2-6-2014: In regards to the comment below. I do not want to be miss leading . This third review, I was not asked to re-review The Backyard Ale House. My second review I was contacted and asked to do a re-review. This review was based on my own urge to do another review. read more

Best friend & I visited Scranton the weekend of January 25th. This bar was close to our hotel, was recommended by our hotel bartender, and had great Yelp reviews. So we decided to check it out on a Saturday night. We had a great time. There were two extensive beer lists: one bottled, one draft.. The beer was cold, and moderately priced. Our bartender, Jessica C, was friendly and provided outstanding service. In addition to the regular bar area, the bar features a "back yard" which has a huge tent over it in the winter time, with heaters. We never felt cold or like we were outside when we ventured into this area. Overall, this was a great bar! Tip: There is a blackboard next to the front bar. Check this board for specials each night! read more
