First time at this downtown Melbourne restaurant and will definitely try it again. Ambience is nice, although not a prerequisite of my, and they have tables with flat top griddles to make your own pancakes which is unique but again not my forte. What is high on my list is quality and taste of food as well as is the service. Both were spot on, seated and serviced immediately with our breakfast meals arriving under ten minutes later. Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious and rather large portions that challenged my appetite leaving no leftovers but totally full and satisfied. This place has made my top ten list In Brevard County and top five in Melbourne. read more

I wanted to take my mom out to a nice breakfast. However, I'm currently on a 21-day vegan diet detox. So I went on Yelp to check out the options I had and Breakwater came up. After reading their menu online, I still wasn't convinced I was going to have any real vegan options. But upon reading their reviews, I was assured the restaurant had several vegetarian and vegan options. When we walked in, my mom and I were promptly greeted and asked if we wanted to sit at a griddle table where we could make our own pancakes or a regular table. We opted for a regular table. My mom ordered the chicken and waffles. I ordered the fried green tomatoes benedict but substituted the eggs with tofu and the black cherry grits with vegan home fries. All the food served is locally sourced and fresh. Everything came out tasty. Unfortunately, my mom was a bit disappointed in the portion of fried chicken that came with her dish. And I was a bit disappointed by their lack of caffeine free and herbal tea options. (This is the reason I only gave them 4 stars.) With that said, I really liked the restaurant overall. The Southern decor is cute. The customer service was nice. Eric wasn't even our waiter but he was so attentive to our table which I appreciated. And I was surprised to see how packed this place gets even on a Monday. Would love to go back when I'm on a less restrictive diet. read more

This place always has a line but it is definitely worth the wait. The grits are the best I have ever had. With the amount of excellent food they give you, if you show around 10a, you won't need another meal for the rest of the day. read more

A cut way above the basic eggs, bacon and pancake place, with a lively, laid back and super friendly vibe. Come hungry, as the portions are pretty healthy. Cant say so much for the big fat slabs of bacon everywhere, but, hey this is Backwater- a biscuits and grits kind of place. Vegans probably shouldn't bother coming,?though a vegetarian could enjoy some pancakes ( good) and the lemony fried green tomato Benedict with kale was surprisingly light and very good. Black cherry grits- interesting combo. Yes, they feature griddle tables for the make your own pancakes experience but there is a much longer wait for those, so we opted for a regular table. There is a sign in sheet up front where you indicate if you want griddle table seating. If you are lucky like we were, you can gran a seat at the counter without much of a wait. There are regular tables as well. Counter is a great spot - front seat for all the kitchen action. By the way- The bloody mary is spicy- peppery- if you're in to that. It kind of over powered my pallet for the Benedict- so keep that in mind. Enjoy! read more

THIS PLACE IS SO MUCH FUN! I'd compare it to a Japanese steakhouse where they cook in front of you - but you do the cooking - and it's pancakes! This place is POPULAR! We waited over a half hour for a table for 2, but it was #worththewait. You can chose between a table with a built in griddle where you make-your-own, or a normal table where you are served like a regular restaurant. Of course, I chose the griddle. Upon seating, you receive a little plastic menu with a whiteboard marker and you select from the type of pancakes down to flavors and toppings. There is also an area to add eggs and meats on the side (the bacon was to die for). I went with the seasonal pancakes (vanilla mint) and threw some chocolate chips on for good measure. I had a blast with my friend making different shapes of pancakes and being chastised for my impatience. We were checked on by waitstaff regularly throughout our meal. Everyone was really friendly and seemed happy to work there. Shout out to the fun dude who made me a rose out of a napkin! My only complaint is they aren't open for dinner. It would be a great place for a date or a change of pace for a meal. Who doesn't love breakfast for dinner?! read more

Overall we enjoyed our brunch at Backwater. They do not take reservations so we waited about 20 minutes to be seated. If we wanted the pancake griddle table it would've been 40 minutes. The atmosphere was very chaotic, at least where we were seated (high top near the bar). The kitchen is visible and you can see and hear the hustle and bustle of the staff and you hear the hostess running in and out yelling names. The food was good except the chicken and waffles. We were expecting a whole piece of fried chicken but it's actually just small chicken nuggets on a waffle, it was just ok. The Cajun omelette and seasonal red velvet pancakes were amazing! Our server was also very sweet. read more

This is a nice place with an enjoyable vibe, we had a griddle table and ordered the seasonal pancakes as well as lemon poppyseed both very delicious. The family enjoyed the griddle table and making shapes with the pancake batter, it was a lot of fun on top of good food. read more

Came here on a Thursday morning. Looks like it stays fairly busy. You can choose a regular table or a table with a griddle in the middle for pancakes. The limited menu included a pulled pork biscuit with poached eggs and hollandaise sauce. Very cozy atmosphere and friendly service. read more

This was worth the hour twenty-five minute wait... I called the day before and the young lady informed me that due to the holiday their wait time was about an 1-1.5hr. I ordered the lemon poppyseed Penny Stack (2 cakes, bacon or sausage, & eggs) with a side of blueberries. Although we weren't able to sit at a "griddle" table the experience was still good. It's a great spot to enjoy with your husbabe, homegirls, or the entire family! You can thank me later! read more

Phenomenal breakfast experience. Jinlin is one of the best waitpersons we've had anywhere. I thought I had tried some pretty good grits before today, they all pail in comparison to the cheesy heavenly concoction in the Boss Hog. The fried green tomatoes were fantastic, and the basaltic onions on top were just the ticket. Next time we will be ready to make some Pancakes on the table grill. read more

This place was one of the best breakfast places I've ever sat down at. From the food to the service it was freaking awesome. What I call control chaos behind the bar/ kitchen was freaking amazing. The guy getting the orders from the cooks was on point from the big guy hollering Follow HANDS! It took me a minute to figure it out but I did. The food was prepared as ordered and was amazing. I can say for a small little hole N-the wall it was awesome. I will bring all my friends here from now on when I travel to Cocoa beach Florida area. This was a cool find. #goodfood #awesomeservice #2022goals read more

We came for the cook your own pancakes and were not disappointed! We ordered one buttermilk and one gluten free batter. Each made about 8+ small to medium pancakes. We tried 4 different toppings and they gave enough for all of our pancakes. We ordered build your own omelettes and they came with a side. We highly recommend the home fries, super impressive! Will definitely make the trip here again! We live about 1hr and 45 mins away and can't wait to come back! The staff was on top of our needs the whole time, great job! read more

Backwater - Pancake with mini Reese' PB cups, cookie dough bites and Carmel sea salt chips! - Breakfast & Brunch Near Me - Melbourne, Florida

Honestly- The food is good. Little pricey for a basic 2 eggs side plate ($6) about the same for 2 pieces of bacon. I only come here for the pancakes, I don't really like pancakes, so it fair to say the pancakes here are amazing. But the service here leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Most of the waitresses are beyond rude & have awful customer service. Also just a tip- they should really turn the a/c down a little bit, with all the griddles it's super hot. Would make sense to keep the place a little cooler. read more

This is a solid joint. I've only been here once and we really only ordered the pancakes and a few of the sides (sausage and breakfast potatoes), but everything we had was really good. I do hope to return to try the other dishes available, but from what we did have, the pancake batter was actually delicious--we had the seasonal gingerbread and the buttermilk, the sausage was a great texture and phenomenal with the maple syrup, and the breakfast potatoes were crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. I would only argue that they were a little plain (I prefer some extra seasonings or pizazz like onions and peppers), but many people like them less jazzed up. We came around 11am on a Friday morning so there was no wait for a table with the pancake griddle, but I highly recommend getting here early on the weekends. read more

Wow, a totally unexpected and welcome foodie addition to the downtown Melbourne scene. Cool, retro-country interior. One of the best of many meals I had during my nine day vacation in Florida. I applaud the courageous business decision of management to include several vegan and vegetarian options on the menu for an otherwise decidedly Southern restaurant. I was considering the Biscuits with Veggie Gravy, but settled on the Fried Green Tomato and Spinach Eggs Benedict. Accompanied by amazing cherry cheese grits. You read that right, and they were great. Daughter had the buttermilk pancakes, which were probably the best pancakes that I've had anywhere. You can cook them yourself, but we let the kitchen handle it. Wife loved her Fried Green Tomato Caprese Sandwich. Pleasant service. Nice bathrooms. Wish I could go more often. read more

Great brunch! We went for a fun brunch date and loved it! The blueberry lemonade was to die for!

Ordered through Uber on a Sunday morning. Got the Pulled Pork Eggs Benedict, Build Your Own Omelette, and Biscuits and Gravy. Biscuit was okay, but the gravy was GREAT! The Pulled pork was DELICIOUS and the egg was cooked perfectly. Husband enjoyed the omelette, though it was firm and dry. (Some restaurants - like this one - seem to use an omelette maker or something that makes them firm and dry. It's just not as a good as a real omelette.) Grits were not as creamy as I'd like, but still good. Overall - delish! The pulled pork flavor alone will get us coming back. Can't wait to try more from the menu. read more

I went here with some friends of mine while we were in training for DEOMI. We put our name on the list for the griddle and waited about 30-45 mins on a Sunday morning. While we waited we had some amazing blood orange mimosas. These things were 75% champagne and so freaking delicious!! When we finally got our table I was excited to draw my pancakes and have some fun with that. Plus the food is all locally grown so I didn't feel too bad about eating and taking away from local farmers. The food was amazing! Even the vegan sausage was good. I can't complain though about anything! read more

You cannot go wrong here! Moved to Melbourne in January and Backwater quickly became my favourite spot to eat. The buttermilk pancakes are seriously the best I've had - whether you choose to make them yourself at a griddle table or have them made for you. Beyond pancakes, they have superb sandwiches too. Love the shrimp po boy, the ribeye sandwich (my husband's fav) and the breakfast club - think BLT but with an egg. Fresh ingredients, great bread, and I love the option to make it 'skinny' by opting to have only two slices of bread instead of three. Honestly, Backwater is one of those places you could close your eyes, point at the menu, and end up having a great meal. Ooh good coffee too! PS: prepare to wait if you come here on weekends, especially if you want a griddle top table (which can get really hot to sit at during the summer). read more

I am so sad I don't live in the area, because this place is easily one of my favorite breakfast/brunch spots in Florida. The service is super friendly despite having a wait on a busy morning/early afternoon. There are so many options to choose from which include twists on traditional breakfast fare in addition to their own unique creations. The citrus waffle I had was super unique and tasty; I loved the candied orange zest on top of the waffle. Everyone in my party enjoyed their meals, which everything from a breakfast club sandwich, to omelettes, to a shrimp po boy. Delicious food and friendly staff, i did not do the diy pancakes just ordered off the menu. the candied orange zest a top the chicken an waffles was top tier. the dish itself was delicious. the lemon poppyseed pancake was ok but i had high hopes. it was a little dry without additional toppings. but will make a great snack later. loved the mimosa and at such a great price only around $5 or $6. Didn't think about how warm the alcohol would make me though in addition to how warm the restaurant is. very cute and quaint but with all the open griddles as well as an open viewing kitchen the restaurant itself had me dripping in sweat lol apart from that it has a very large menu with ample options that make it hard to decide! breakfast and supper searched all day. lots is unique coastal options too. would come back to try more! read more

Great experience! We woke up early to get there right when it opened to avoid the lines for the griddle tables. It was a fun experience to make our own pancakes! We chose to do the color batter and had a blast! The only downside was the the colored batter seemed very sweet, but that may have had to do with the food coloring. It is absolutely worth the stop! We didn't get anything from the kitchen, so I can't attest to more than that in terms of food. The service was a nice change of pace, as it appeared that all the servers just worked the room together. We were never without a coffee refill or waiting on the check. Overall a great experience and lovely staff! Everything seemed very clean and well kept while still having a lot of personality. read more
