After not having a regular dentist for 6+ years (learn from my mistake and do not wait that long between visits!), I was in the market for a dental team to help get me to a good place with my teeth. I came across Backhus Family Dental with a quick google search. After an assessment with Dr Mark, my teeth were not where they should be. I had needed root canal work, crown placements, as well as several cavities filled. I could feel my anxiety begin to climb at the first visit with the amount of visits I knew I'd be back for, but, the team at Backhus Family Dental had my back and helped me through each visit with sweet personalities, clear communication at the beginning of each visit as to what we were doing, warm smiles through it all, and IMPECCABLE work! The office is warm, relaxed, and always beautifully decorated, reflecting the season at hand. I've had a lot of extensive dental work done over the years, and I've found Dr. Mark Backhus and Dr. Maryvette Backhus to be exceptional in the quality of their work. So, my teeth have been awful since I was 8 years old! Ughhh.. Totally fear dentists and dental work. I had an amazing dentist for over 20 years. When he retired I found Dr Backhus . I promise you, you will LOVE him and his office! He makes sure you are comfortable; let's you know what is coming; is gentle, kind, professional and all around Amazing. His wife, Maryvette does my dental cleaning and is extremely careful, gentle and quick all at the same time! Their staff is unbelievable! Stephanie is so knowledgeable and has the best sense of humor! She always makes me feel so comfortable. Tarra works the front desk and does everything she can to make sure insurance handles things first. She's funny, kind, caring and so sweet! You will LOVE this office! I saw Dr. Mark and Stephanie for the first time today. I have to say, I LOVED THEM (Tarra too!). I'm one of those people who would rather run into a burning building than go to the dentist but I knew it was time to get a tooth looked at. My boss referred me to Dr. Mark and it was such a great experience. He is so warm and helped me work through my anxiety of being there; Stephanie is so personable and funny! Dr. Mark Backhus is a good dentist with great bedside manner. Unfortunately, his front office person is horrible. She is snotty, rude, and acts as though you are bothering her and she's somehow doing you a favor when she is just doing her job. You are told one thing by one day regarding charges; the following week the same person gives you different information. Getting payment seems to be the most important thing, and they never call back to reschedule. I really like this dentist, but his staff makes going there such an unpleasant experience, I am going to find someone else. UPDATE: Found another dentist closer to where I live now. He's excellent! His office is state-of-the-art and his staff is wonderful. It turns out that the three cavities I supposedly had (according to Dr. Backus) DO NOT EXIST! And a tooth he was going to pull can be saved by my new dentist! So not only does his office staff suck, he apparently isn't as good a dentist as I thought. Very very disappointing. read more

This dentist put a filling on top of my broken crown in what I consider a reckless patch job. That same night I got a terrible infection with a tooth ache that lasted 5 days and was absolutely brutal. I went back and instead of taking the filling out they just gave me pain meds until I could get it pulled weeks later. Luckily I found a dentist that did an emergency extraction. Last time I come here. Too bad too, doc was a nice guy. read more

Have you seen your dentist lately? I'd been putting off going for a few years and what do you know I had an inlay come off. As I'm sure you're aware dentistry has gone the way of high tech and more clinic type care where they want to sell you a "plan"... l don't need a plan, I need dental care. Okay, so my boss refers me to his dentist. Mind you cost isn't the major issue here. I have a giant whole in my tooth I use to eat food with so I go in not expecting anything and come out with one the most amazing experiences ever From Dorilyn to Dr Backhus and his assistant Stephanie, I was treated like I've been a patient for 20 years. Everything was text book perfect and didn't have to increase my credit limit. Never have I encountered a more pleasant dental office -- comfortable, professional and efficient. Dr. Backhus is a technically skilled Dentist who also ensures that you will be pain-free during treatment. Stephanie (one of the Dental Assistants) has a terrific sense of humor and puts you at ease immediately. I recently had three gold crowns made, a deep cleaning and several restorations placed and I am very pleased with the results. Some reports have emerged over the years about Dentists selling patients on unnecessary procedures. That did not happen to me and I am confident that Dr. Backhus is both ethical and trustworthy. My mother has worked in Dentistry since before I was born. This makes me very very picky when choosing a Dentist in a new area such as Sacramento. I've been to 3 other Dental Offices before finding Dr. Backhus. The other Dental Offices had seemed to be more interested with my Dental Insurance Coverage rather than how I feel about my teeth. Both docs here are great and caring. Very knowledgeable. They are very personable and their back staff and receptionist are as well. They have a great team of people.
