Back East Mediterranean Grill is one of the better options in the North Shore. I ordered the Chicken Shawarma Pita Wrap with extra sauce and it was delicious. There were extra pickles in it which I didn't realize from past experiences, so if you're a fan this is your spot. The wrap was created proportionally, although I should have asked for lettuce or tomatoes to be added. The staff is friendly and it took about 15 minutes for the food to be ready on a slow day which I believe is reasonable. I don't want my food rushed and then made poorly. These ppl are idiots, losing business for no reason. How do you have containers of hummus for sale, sell us a container of toum one time but no say no the third time? It's not a hard condiment to make but I like to buy cause it saves me time in the kitchen. Too bad this is the only are Lebanese in the area because people are really missing out on well made Mediterranean food. Based on the reviews, I had really high expectations for the food here. And it was simply fine. Nothing to rave about but not bad! I had the chicken shwarma wrap: good portion, chicken was slightly dry, pickles were good. I could have done without fries being in the wrap. The location was clean and spacious. One word: FALAAAAAFEL. Some of the best tasting falafel I've ever had. My mouth is watering just thinking about it again. Crisp on the outside, soft on the inside, with amazing flavor. The portions for the entrees/plates are very big. I got the falafel plate which came with two sides so I got hummus and a salad. The hummus was super tasty and the salad was fresh. I didn't care for the pickled radish/pink things that came with my meal, but the rest of the meal was absolutely scrumptious. 90% of their menu is gluten-free!! HIGHLY recommend! read more

We typically go to Habib in Portsmouth NH or into Cambridge/Boston to get our Shawarma fix. Now no more. Though Back East just opened, I can say they know what they are doing. Big time. My son and I both got Shawama in pita. For $9 you get fresh cut off the rotisserie, and they put not only lettuce, but also put pickles and fries in it and their garlic sauce is WICKED good. I was going to get it without the fries and light on the sauce, but thought I would try it as is first, and modify my second. I am so glad I did. It's the all together taste that makes it so good. Though this isn't as good as the one in Israel, it's still very good and a great value for the price and freshness. We fear the location will make it difficult for them to survive so we encourage people to go there often. We have a couple of suggestions: Once you get going, please make your own pita. We loved that you put the grilled pita into a panini press. It made it all meld together and made it stay together so much better than at other places. Your pita was good, but not as incredible as it could be. Have more choices for things you can put into your pita/plate. Baba ganoush, additional garlic sauce that is spicier, tomatoes, etc. That would allow for more customization. I'd love onion strings on mine! Have a website where we can order and then pick up. This place is great, so good that my partner and I grabbed lunch here 2 days in a row. The falafel wrap was moist and creamy, with just the right amount of crunch from the veggies. The combo plate came with grilled chicken and beef, both were tasty, juicy, and slightly charred (I love the charred taste). Finally, Middle Eastern food in Beverly! I've worked in this town for over a decade and this is the first middle eastern restaurant I've seen. It looks like they just opened so they work at a bit of a frenzied pace. My order took a bit long to fill but they were super nice about it. They added a little freebie to my order for the long wait, which was appreciated. The chicken kabob plate was good. The chicken was juicy and tender. The salad side wasn't my favorite...wish it had a tastier dressing. The hummus was very good. Enjoyed my first experience here. Tried this restaurant for the first time well into the COVID pandemic. This was a new style of food for 2 out of 3 family members. Trapped at home for five months now, we are all sick of our same old recipes. We ordered online and picked up from Back East at the door. My husband drove over and called to say he'd arrived as he pulled up; they met him at the door within seconds. Husband says they did a good job with that and made pick up easy. Thanks for that, Back East Grill! We tried each of the five styles of meat option: chicken shawarma (in pita wrap), beef shawarma (pita wrap), and the Back East Trio (rice plate.) Even though there were only three of us dining, I wanted everyone to taste the grilled chicken, spicy ground beef, and grilled tenderloin kebab because I didn't know who might like what. We got a Falafel Wrap, too, so we did a full taste test, slicing off a bit of everything for each of us (and had enough left for lunch the next day for two.) The food at Back East is not quite cheap eats, but the value is very good. (Four entrees and a couple of sides made five meals for us.) All of the meats were of very good quality (much better than cheap fast food gristly stuff.) My kids both decided they would order the beef next time; one prefers the spicy ground beef, and the other thought the grilled tenderloin was best. (No surprise: the kid who likes spicier food prefers the spiced beef, but this is NOT hard core spicy food. My dad calls himself "Mr. Bland" so I grew up on a pretty mild diet, and I could easily eat the "spicy" beef.) I was delighted when one of my kids asked to try the stuffed Grape Leaves, but neither boy liked them. I think they tasted just like they should, but were a bit of a reach for children who still resist the need for vegetables. I found it interesting that one of my kids, who normally dislikes grocery store hummus, said he would elect that as a side dish if we order again. (I told him he couldn't order double fries with a rice plate which would have been his first choice.) The other kid would get fries plus the chopped vegetable salad with its slightly sweet pomegranate dressing. I'd rate that a great salad for kids, flavorful, slightly adventurous, but easy to like even with a pedestrian American palate. :) For myself, I enjoyed the flavor combinations of all three wrap sandwiches we tried--and I picked them to taste "what the chef thinks is delicious!"--but I will probably order the simple falafel with tahini from the Mezze section as a light meal for myself in the future, probably with a full size side of hummus (that would definitely leave leftovers of the dip.) I really enjoy falafel, and this is the best I've had. I'm also not a very big eater and not a huge fan of meat, though an omnivore. Everything we tried seems like a good bet for someone new to this cuisine. The food was very flavorful yet not too spicy, and it all seemed fresh and healthy. As I fantasize about a future with parties again, I could easily imagine taking advantage of Back East Mediterranean Grill's catering trays. It seems like this would be great, people-pleasing food to serve a crowd. Back East's location on a busy, tricky street corner means I've noticed it while whizzing past, but never stopped in before. 4/5 Good Back east offers Mediterranean food with bold flavors. While a little pricey, their meat is cooked to perfection, and well seasoned. Plus, their accommodating staff makes dining at Back East a great experience. I personally dined in at Back East with friends, and we ordered a combination of the Chicken Shawarma Wrap and the Chicken Kebab Wrap. When we went, they were all out of Beef (which was our first choice). Even though we were not able to order our first choice, we were pleasantly surprised-- the chicken was juicy and tender and seasoned to perfection. The sauces were rich but not overpowering, and overall the balance of the Shawarma/Kebab Wraps were perfect. While Back East excels in their food, we did have to wait for the food for a long time. They were particularly busy on that day with pick up orders, but we still waited a long time. Additionally, the serving size for the Chicken Shawarma and Kebab could have bene more substantial (potentially with a side). Overall, Back East offers great flavors at a decent price point. Really awesome Mediterranean food if you are in Beverly having a hankering. It's hard to go wrong with falafel and they do it really well here. There was a certain lack of sweetness that I was searching for in my plate though. It would've been nice if there was some pickled onions or a sweeter sauce that would balance out the savory flavors. My mom was also sad to not receive any feta or olives on her salad (I'm not sure if that's a separate cost). I would go here again, but I'm not dying to and would probably only go on occasion if I'm really craving Mediterranean food. read more

This place is not only awesome but authentic! Recently moving from LA where there is a plethora of Mediterranean cuisine and friends who cooked for me. They would be proud if they visit Massachusetts and I bring them here. Delicious food and friendly atmosphere. Been here twice and ordered the spicy ground beef kabob wrap with tahini on the side to dip and pickled turnips. So good! Eventually I'll try their entire menu but this dish just hits the spot. Went for a later lunch (around 2:30 p) on a Friday with a friend based on the Yelp rating and we both thought our food and experience didn't live up to the high rating. You order and pay at the counter and if dining in, they bring your order to your table when it's ready. There appeared to be two gentlemen working, one cooking and one taking orders. One greeted us, pleasant but no offer to answer any questions when and we told him we'd need a few minutes to look at the menu ...so we took a seat to review the menu. I decided on the chicken Shawarma plate and my friend, the spicy beef plate. Both include rice, pita bread and two sides. We both ordered a bottled water and my tab was $15.25 and my friend's was a few bucks more. It looked fairly new and clean but not fancy, and there were four other tables occupied at the time. It took about 10-15 minutes for our lunches to arrive. The pita was a large round with the pocket completely split into two sides, wrapped in plastic. The shawarma was served over the rice with tahini drizzle. For me, the shawarma was browned a bit more than I preferred which made it not so tender and a little dry without the tahini. The rice was cooked perfectly with the presence of butter. For sides I chose hummus which wasn't as flavorful as others I've had before elsewhere but was very creamy. We were both quite surprised that the salad you order as a side did but contain any lettuce, it's just cucumbers and diced fresh tomatoes tossed in an oil and herb dressing. My friends spicy beef was very spicy but dense and not "fluffy" like some kofta served at other Mediterranean restaurants. Her other side (than salad) was fries which were hot and crispy but I thought it tasted liked they were fried in old oil. They had a funny oily aftertaste to me. The pita looked like it was purchased from a local distributor and not made in-house. We're glad we tried it but not impressed. A little pricy for the atmosphere and quality. read more

I had a chicken schwarma and I'd say it was pretty good. The pita is thin like a tortilla or flatbread. I was hoping for some fluffier pita. The baklava was sweet but the other sweet treat lacked flavor. The baba ghanoush has a lot of smoke flavor but is just a bit goopy, like it's got a lot of oil in it. Overall, it's okay but with nearly 5 stars here, I was thinking I'd be blown away. I'd probably give it another try. read more

You haven't tasted authentic until you've come to this place. Everything I have ever ordered is made with absolute love. When I was I kid I used to live down the street from a Lebanese restaurant that made the most amazing chicken shawarma ever! So when I saw one on the menu at Back Est Mediterranean Grill, I though I should try it. Well let me tell you, from the first bite, I was brought back to my childhood in an instant. 35 years later. Thankfully, this place showed up. Armenian oriented Mediterranean/Levant style street food. Falafel, kebab, smokey baba ganoush and shawarma are all top notch. Hummus is great as well. Tabouleh, fattoush. All great. Nothing is bad here. If you like falafel/kebab joints you should patron this place every time you get the hankering, because we're lucky to have it here in Beverly. It's on a weird corner, which might turn some people off because of parking, but it has a parking lot behind the building and using the old Rite Aid parking lot is super easy. Of course this place opened in Beverly the week I was moving away. I make a point to try it after having business in Salem. I am a huge fan of Mediterranean food. I was nervous that the menu was too small. I had the combo of chicken, steak and ground beef platter. I also judge by the hummus. I can say this may the best hummus out of 100 places I've had hummus. Sometimes the meats in the kebabs are dry or chewy. They must go for the top quality cuts because the chicken was so tender and flavorful it was unreal. The steak was tender and kofta also of high quality. I grabbed a lamb wrap for drive home and it didn't disappoint. I wish I could tell you what was in it besides lamb and tahini but I was trying to drive. This place is the real deal. read more
