I've come here twice now, both times on a Friday. The 12$ oysters draw me in. My friend and I like to sit on the patio with our dogs. The beer/wine are both good deals and they have daily food specials. The service is typically great. The only complaints I have are the amount of shell pieces still in the oysters and both times ordering the oysters, they have taken a super long time to come to my table. On a Sunday, spent a few hours with my bestie at the Newport Beach public library on Avocado (yes open on a Sunday and such a beautiful space! Support your local library!) and after was looking for a light fun lunch. Remembered that Whole Foods had a little beer bar in the back, located as someone else had mentioned what would be 1pm on the clock if Newport Center Dr circle was the clock, north of Santa Rosa Dr, with a wonderful parking structure across the street (has those great red light/green light parking indicators and tons of spaces). You can walk in directly through the back, avoiding the Whole Foods front entrance crowds. Back Bay Tavern in Whole Foods has bar, high top, and regular seating. Several TVs on with different sports (in NB, golf and tennis of course lol), not too loud,volume, mellow crowd. You order at the bar. Juanana greeted us - what a sweetheart. Lots of great beers on tap (12+), including several IPAs. Nice food menu with decent prices. I don't eat meat and my buddy was kind and was good with a shared order of the cauliflower nachos. We ordered, grabbed our beers and sat at a high top. Juanana served our cauliflower nachos (did I say how lovely she was?) Ok, we were blown away. Large portion. My buddy said "ok, we won't be eating all this", but boy did we mow. Lightly fried (think tempura) with an amazing sauce drizzled on it along with green onions, lettuce, jalapenos. So delish & still talking about it. (I did take a picture of it but we had already ate half of it - did not think would be too attractive lol). If you're stuck at Fashion Island and need a beer, my favorite place to grab is Back Bay Tavern. Yes, it's about as far as you can get and located within a Whole Foods, but the little bar is solid. Back Bay has a great beer selection, their food is delicious, and the bartenders are super friendly. Back Bay is on the far NE of Fashion Island (1:00 if Fashion Island were a clock) in the back of the Whole Foods. You can enter from the store, or there is a back door. If you enter through the back, you will pass a small, covered outdoor patio. There are wooden booths to the right, high top tables down the center, and the bar to the left after you enter. With windows on two sides and the store on another, in the daytime Back Bay is well lit. The back bar has the beer menu, and there are multiple HDTVs hung on the NE wall. As previously mentioned, the Back Bay offers a sizable number of beers that should make any beer drinker happy. Their food is easily shared and very tasty. The atmosphere is very laid back with other patrons typically there to kill some time also. Though in Whole Foods, it retains the feeling of a small bar. I definitely recommend grabbing a few beers at Back Bay, whether you are already at the mall or even driving by, Back Bay is worth it. read more

Great place to take your Whole Foods items in to nosh on. You can pay for them at their register in the restaurant. Service here is so friendly and 5 stars all the way. 3 stars for the food. They are a full restaurant and bar in the very back of the store. They have a separate restaurant menu of appetizers, salads, and main dishes, a lot of pub style food. We started by eating our ahi poke and cucumber and avocado rolls from the grocery side. We should have stopped there but dh was still hungry and we thought we would try a few items from the menu and were not impressed. Sliders were dry and the meat did not taste fresh or high quality, fries were frozen/salty, fish and chips greasy and salty-didn't finish them. Sweet potato fries were the best thing and even those were frozen. We obviously ordered the wrong things. I expected much more from this restaurant and from Whole Foods in general. 3.5 stars I kinda really like this place. Their happy hour runs later than other places in the area - whatever time until 6:30. The casual restaurant is located in the back corner of Whole Foods Market and serves up a pretty organic/healthy menu. This, by no means, guarantees a good value because quite frankly, happy hour here can get pretty pricy. I've been ordered the Irish nachos because I feel like it's pretty good bang for your buck, except not really because the potatoes suck unless you add in either chicken ($4) or steak ($5). You end up with a $12 or $13 appetizer, which is fairly expensive for happy hour. Calamari is good - $7 bucks-ish. I had their dried spice wings the other time and they were okay. It lacked flavor, but the wings were tender. I actually really like their little sushi rolls during happy hour. I especially like their spicy tuna something roll, but unfortunately, it's rather expensive for what it is. The sushi is fresh but 4 pieces cost 4 buckeroos and so that warrants a no thank you. FYI - they have different buyers so if you like the beers at one Whole Foods you might not find it at another one. The bar allows you to bring in anything from the store if you want - even order one of the pizzas from the front and they will bring it back to you. Whole Foods Market Newport Beach opened today and located within the market is Back Bay Tavern, a gastropub with a full menu and extensive beer and wine selection. There are 24 craft beers on tap which rotate frequently and the atmosphere is that of a modern speakeasy. The menu is hearty but contemporary and included are great bar food style appetizers to munch on while sipping on your libations. I loved the veggie tempura as well as the artisanal cheese board. For entrees -- only available from 5pm until closing -- my favorites were the seared scallops, short ribs and the Atlantic salmon. This is a truly innovative concept for a market and I look forward to seeing how the public receives it in the coming months! You need to go check it out! read more

Who knew that one of the best hangouts in Fashion Island would be inside the Whole Foods market? Certainly not I--it was due to Joe L's and Sandya N's OC knowledge that we found ourselves here kind of late (for OC) on a Friday night. We sat at the low wooden table and chairs in the corner of the patio, which was really lovely and relaxing--perfect for hanging out with friends! They had quite a good interesting selection of beers, so we partook even though we were all totally full from an event we were at just moments before. And wouldn't you know it, after a bit of pulling on the pint I was starting to feel snackish. I was intrigued by their blue crab handroll--real crab in a handroll? Sign me up! Well, it was a little disappointed, to be honest. Sure it was all real crab, but it really needed a little bit of mayo or avocado to not make it so darn dry. Dining at Fashion Island should be much better than it is.There are a few of the big chains, which I usually avoid, and a few higher end options, which are expensive, and then a generic food court. Do you really want to eat in a food court? But I just stumbled into the Back Bay Tavern, and I am very glad I did. There was ample seating, no waits, reasonable prices, good food, and beer and wine. I had a burger which was thick and juicy, cooked to my specification, with a side of some of the best sweet potato fries I have had. With a beer. Can't get that in the food court. OK guys, the BEST thing about this place is that you can get seated, decide what you want and then have a friend do a beer run LITERALLY at the adjacent Whole Foods market. You can bring a six pack into the restaurant easily, and they charge you on your bill. How convenient and, um, AMAZING is that? Nik M. and I just couldn't believe how much we saved on beer during our outing. It was a pleasant surprise. We opted for a six pack bottle of hefeweizen that was only about $9. You'd easily pay around that much for 1-2 glasses. To top this off, the staff and chefs are incredibly kind. I stupidly and accidentally forgot to ask them to hold the bacon on my "Adult Grilled Cheese" because I was just way too excited about adding avocado to the delectable dish. When it came, my stomach dropped. This rarely happens, but I felt so disappointed. Our server could tell by my facial expression and offered to swap my sandwich for a brand new one sans cheese. 1000X brownie points! I love this place. In the spirit of objectiveness, I do feel the seating could be improved upon in doors. If beer isn't your thing they do offer cocktails with mostly organic spirits. There are a few large tv's on the wall to watch whatever sports game is on. I dont know about you guys but I dont come here to eat. This review is strictly on the awesome bartenders and amazing beer selection they have in this little gem inside Whole Foods. So with that said lets get down to business. They have a killer selection of beers on tap for a fair price. Better than most restaurants you will find in Newport. I came in here and was blown away at all the great stuff they had. I go to the Whole Foods at the District but I think I like this one much better just because they have such a great selection. If you are a fan of good beers and love IPAs and have not been to this place. I can defiantly recommend checking it out. They also offer full bar if you are into that. HOLY CRAFT BEER, BATMAN! So I really want to give this place a 4 star, but I'm trying to be honest. I didn't get a dime of food, and I only had one beer. But get this. I walked in to just see what they had on tap. I was shocked at all the VARIETY. Yes, people. Variety is very hard to come by. You can have "craft" but no variety. Back Bay had plenty of different stuff...and plenty of stuff I hadn't tried......I've had 153 different beers! So yes, that's huge that most of the stuff they had was unfamiliar to me. Here's the other thing: the bartender was this nice lady who already started serving me schoshes of their beer. "What do you like? I have this IPA, (hands me the taster), but try this one (hands me another taster immediately). I said, "wow, i like that strong hop and bitter," and then she gives me a THIRD TASTER of Big Bad Baptist from Epic, a Porter that was definitely flavorful. I was already getting a buzz and I looked at the coaster, and asked to take it. "Sure, you can keep the glass too!" Mind you, I didn't look like a bum, so I don't think she was feeling sorry for me! For legal reasons, I couldn't take my savory beer back to the gorgeous patio seating they have around the side. So they had a server escort my beer as I lead the way.... Decided to try out this place as I was walking around fashion island with a friend and my dog. We sat on the patio since the dog was with us. It wasn't that crowded but it took a while for someone to come by our table. We tried a couple of appetizers and I had the fish tacos and my friend had the grilled cheese. The food was overall pretty good, but the service was definitely lacking. I thought the garlic fries were underwhelming but my friend said the grilled cheese was very good. My fish tacos were huge and a good value for the price. Didn't drink any alcohol so I don't have any comments on the drinks. Though I will say they had a photo of the Bloody Mary and it looks pretty damn good. I was a bit disappointed with the service, but for it being attached to whole foods, the prices weren't too bad. I am surprised I like this place as much as I do. I usually avoid shopping centers, and it's another bloody "gastro pub" that is weirdly squeezed into the back of a Whole Foods Market. I have now been here twice since, and love the vibe and the bartenders are real pros and cool cats. They have a great rotating selection of craft beers, and some great vino by the glass choices as well. Their BLAT sandwich is excellent: in house smoked bacon, lettuce, avocado, heirloom tomato. Also tried, in spite of the bartender trying to steer me elsewhere, the Portobello mushroom sandwich. It was fresh and tasty, but needed to be kicked up with some aioli or a pesto sauce. The bartender said they could definitely do the aioli as they have that for another menu item. Duly noted! Heads up...proper guest relations and service means that you should be checking on your guests. We shouldn't have to speak up. You do know what customer service is, right? Assistant Manager apologizes even though he knows that nothing else can be done. How about a discount? No, instead, you actually charged me more. My $15 bill became $18. You're supposed to be Whole Foods...instead you just have a Hole. Having great beers on tap doesn't make up for your unforgivingly bad customer service. read more

The restaurant was empty but service was still so slow. We ordered the burger and Brussels sprouts to share. When our food finally came out both dishes were cold, as if they had been sitting in the window for a while, and both were missing some of the condiments/ingredients they were supposed to come with (burger was missing the bacon jam and mayo and the Brussels sprouts were missing the candied pecan and chili flakes). We told our waitress, and with no apology or explanation (I got the feeling this was a regular occurrence), she brought us a side of mayo and a dish of pecans. By that time the sprouts were pretty much a soggy, vinegary mess and we were over it. We asked our waitress to take them off the bill, and again with no apology, she obliged. So when we were finally greeted we placed our drink orders. These took quite a while to arrive as well. We decided to share an appetizer and got 2 entrees as well. The entree I got was a tomato bisque with a grownup grilled cheese. I even remember our server saying this was a classic combination...yet she could not remember to put the two together. My sandwich arrived with his salad and his sandwich with my soup. On top of that our appetizer & entrees all arrived at once. Grownup Grilled Cheese & Tomato Bisque: I love these two together, separately they are good as well. I highly recommend ordering this Calamari: Their calamari is not done right at all. There was no crunch factor on the outside and the inside was soggy. Also our server was hard to find. She had someone run the food out to us as well. I want this place to be great, but it's not. In all honesty the beer selection, albeit heavy on the IPAs, is really good but at the end of the day this is a bar and a few tables inside a Whole Foods. It's just never going to be a proper restaurant or pub. Menu looks promising but was really disappointed in the burger. Staff was nice, but again, clear they were grocery store employees first, and not servers/bartenders. I suppose this is a decent spot to kill some time if you need to let your electric car charge for a few minutes longer or if you need a drink while your girlfriend agonizes over what color reusable grocery bags she wants ... I just don't think I'll be going out of my way to stop in here again. read more
