We promptly decided it was time to have it replaced...better than ever before! We got a couple bids for the job. But Charles really stood out because: 1. After walking the job, he promptly sent a detailed bid and CAD drawing. We refined the scope several times and every time he would promptly refine the quote and redo the CAD drawing. Very good follow through. Not pushy, just responsive. 2. He had a large book of color photographs of his work that helped us choose finishes and make design decisions. He has done a TON of patios and pergolas in different styles. I love this book because there are a lot of decisions to make -- it's easier to point to the picture you like more vs. having to imagine if you want feature A or B. In terms of price, Charles was in the middle -- not the highest bid and not the lowest. But we got the best feeling from him, and that's what is important to me. We redid our kitchen two years ago and our general contractor (not Charles, obviously), fled the country in the middle of the job after a progress payment! Yikes, bad memories. I am very happy with how my patio and pergola turned out; we seriously live outside now. We have a plexiglass cover (to protect from rain) and fans (to help somewhat with the Texas heat). Charles and his crew were great overall. Pluses: - They only do outdoor patios and pergolas. This is what they are good at and they are fast. - Charles was here a lot, especially at first to get the job started. He didn't just oversee progress, he was out there working and sweating with his men. - Charles helped to perfect the design while the job was in progress. He had his wife paint several different colors of grey stain onto sample boards so we could choose the right one. We spent a few hours perfecting the brick pattern on the columns. He wanted us to be happy with the final outcome. - Flexible with changes with very few change orders. I must have added 10 electrical outlets...didn't get a bill for it. So unusual for a GC. - Open to feedback when we felt like something wasn't perfect. Because they were outside my kitchen window, I would do dishes and watch progress unfold. And let him know when I didn't like something. Absolutely never got push back from him. He would call his crew or come by and fix it immediately. - Follow through has been great. Even after we were all paid up, he sent over a crew a couple times because rain was getting through my plexiglass cover. Again, so unusual for a GC. Minuses: - I wish they would broaden their scope from just outdoor patios and pergolas to other things. I have a bathroom I would love for them to remodel. Ah well. Anyway, check out the pictures. In our back yard, they built a large finished and shingled pergola and in our kitchen, they installed new cabinets, granite counter tops and tiled backsplash. Each portion of the work, from demolition to the finishing touches, was carried out timely and efficiently and the workmanship was outstanding. Adam and Jason were great. They explained everything, the products and materials, process and schedule, we were informed every step of the way. Jason was there every day to provide oversight, answer questions, and ensure the job was done right, which was INVALUABLE. I had a gorgeous custom stained cedar fence installed. Image #1 Neighbor to my left (Jim) had his rotted back garage wall rebuilt, the door header, jam and all garage siding replaced. Three new exterior doors installed, all new hardware. All the house siding panels replaced, rotted porch ceilings repaired, window calking replaced and the entire house and garage power washed and repainted. Image #2 & 3 Neighbor to my right (Micheal) had a built-in carport built, wired for security lights and painted. Three others had misc fence and exterior repairs. A&M has also been doing work for some of our relatives. Alec is a preferred contractor on my street (Braesview Lane in Breasvalley) and his wife provides thorough, easy to understand invoices. I am simply making this recommendation out of appreciation for the wonderful job they have done for my neighbors and I. We are so pleased to have found this family company to work on our homes.

In back, I noticed our spigot was loose so I opened a small section of the Hardie board and noticed wood rot underneath. Yikes! Similar issue near the bathroom pop out window. I contacted Cornerstone Cowboys for an estimate via Yelp and Carlos responded quickly. Carlos, Jesus and Rosie came out the next day to take a look at our issues and to come up with a game plan. I was sent the estimate and gave them the go ahead. Jesus arrived bright and early to start and the job finished in a reasonable time. The areas that were fixed look FANTASTIC. P.S. Carlos, Jesus and Rosie were super friendly. The one thing we wish we had was a little more clarification with the pricing/estimate prior to signing it. I had asked questions and thought we were all on the same page. Unfortunately, there were added expenses that my husband and I thought were included that weren't and we had to pay extra. Regardless, we are happy with the work that was done and would definitely consider working with Cornerstone Cowboys. I hesitate to ever write something that would impact an individual's livelihood but after a year of…read moreworking with the business and owner I feel confident we've done everything possible to work through this privately first. This was a Covered Patio addition w/ fire pit and I'd say moderate cost. Pros: 1) The phone number listed is for the owner which is quite bold for any company. 2) They were very quick to respond for a quote. 3) They completed the job even through all of the struggles. Some may have taken the money and run. Cons: 1) The Project Manager, Cristian, assigned had very little oversight and added very little value beyond scheduling, ordering materials and translating. -We had to drive around town to locate the stone material we wanted to use in his price range (which didn't exist by the way). There were not recommendations of where to go or any samples available on hand that he'd spec'd. -We had to meet new contractors onsite and explain what they'd be doing. Inspect the job before they left. Look for issues and explain to everyone what needed to be fixed. -We found out in April that Cristian didn't know we were in a windstorm zone in Brazoria even though he was advised by the City Inspector who was not closing out the final inspection with out the engineer letter in January and Me at the beginning of the project where he noted it in the quote. *Still amazed* So the roof had to be replaced to meet the windstorm criteria. -We had to keep and maintain an Issues log for everyone to know what was remaining to be repaired. -We had to stay in constant communication w/ PM (and eventually the owner as well) if we wanted the job to move forward. Weeks would pass with no communication, no work, no major weather events and no explanations. -PM refused to schedule workers in parallel -Requests we made in quoting were explicitly ignored, such as the type of wood NOT to use or dimensions of the foundation. The foundation size was corrected luckily before they poured but unfortunately we reluctantly agreed to keep the wood if they could get the stain right... that took 4 attempts. -This was quoted as a 30 day job, which contracted 7/9/22 and today 8/25/23 we are submitting (as in I'm doing it myself) the paperwork to close out the last permit more than a year later. -In the end the PM/Owner decided they could not do a portion of the contract (French drains and yard regrade & resod) they agreed to and refunded that portion. We happily agreed as well. -We were lied to over and over throughout the process, overt small lies to cover up ignorance and then big whoppers. I don't do lies or liars. I tolerated it for a bit and then I didn't and my husband took over communications to keep the peace. But for anyone from Conerstone reading, honesty goes so much further. 2) The company didn't have relationships with subcontractors and used subpar labor for which they were testing on my project. -Every aspect of the job (except the foundation which is now chipping away) had to be redone 2+ times (up to 4 that I can remember) -There was an attempt to not get a plumbing permit to avoid using the more expensive labor required to run the gas line. After rerunning that line 3 times and getting the permit anyway I'm sure the cost more than caught up though. 3) The nature of our contract originally meant that we had paid for the covered patio before it was complete. From the point it was paid in January we became last priority. You can see on their FB page "Wrapping up another beautiful Patio Job"... 1/3/23... They staged a photo shoot with a gentleman with a cornerstone shirt (I assure you, they do not employ their own labor). How in the world that takes another 7.5 months, I'm sure would baffle all of you as well. Good luck in your search, this is not it.

We had a very complex renovation with many steps, so we asked a lot of questions beforehand to make sure that the scope of the project was understood. Benny was extremely attentive at that time, touted his vast experience, and said he had his own dedicated crew who could complete the project in just a few weeks. Fast forward, and it is apparent he has either lied about many things or is just in way over his head as a contractor. The project dragged on for months with endless delays, excuses, and no clear timelines. The crew was constantly changing, unreliable, and often didn't show up at all. The work that was done was inconsistent, had to be redone on many occasions, and left unfinished at the end of the day. At the beginning, however, he worked very fast in order to extract more of the payments from us. Once we realized that, after materials we had purchased, we had paid the full amount of the project already but the work was only halfway done, he had completely vanished. Now he will not answer our calls or texts to save his life. Who knows what he is doing meanwhile, this entire year we have been trying to live in a house filled with unfinished work and broken promises. It has been so stressful for us and our kids to have to go through this. To add icing on the cake, he is using the pictures of our renovation without our consent to try and swindle more money out of unsuspecting customers. It is a very low blow and just adds to our suffering. I have kept holding out for the chance that he will do the decent and honest thing and either complete the work or return our last payment to make us whole. We do not have the budget to complete the work for now and will have to keep suffering. But it is apparent he is not honest in his dealings and I feel so gullible for falling for it. To sum it up, this has been stressful, expensive, and frustrating. I am very upset at the dishonesty and lack of accountability. We were misled and abandoned mid-project instead of dealing with a trustworthy professional. So please avoid this contractor! I saw a few positive reviews of the company on Facebook, and someone in my neighborhood recommended them, so I hired them. Unfortunately, my experience was not good. The project went well at first. The carpenters (Armando and Ivan) were great, the hvac crew knew what they were doing, and the electricians did what they were supposed to do. The problem was the painters - they ruined the entire project and delayed the completion date by two weeks. The two gentlemen painters were unprofessional and disrespectful of my property, and their workmanship was dreadful. I did not receive the spray-painted smooth finish on my cabinetry because the painters botched the job. After their failed attempt at spray-painting, they resorted to rolling the paint and spoiled that as well. The owner of the company, Mario, mismanaged the project and allowed the mistakes to continue. He was rarely on-site and either 1) did not recognize the extent of the errors, or 2) did not care. I had to text him each evening with pictures of the issues that had to be fixed (dents, drips, scratches, items embedded in the paint, blue/green spackle showing through the paint, areas primed but not painted, etc.). At one point he sent his crew over for their tools and asked me if I wanted another company to finish the job. I realized then that he was threatening to walk off the job, and I knew I had to settle for the inferior work if I wanted to have cabinet and drawer fronts again. I could not fathom the idea that any company would be willing to come behind EGK Custom Homes and fix all the issues. It was a truly horrible experience, and I am still picking paint and primer overspray off my kitchen counters, stovetop, dishes, appliances, plasticware, etc. Luckily, Mario paid to have the paint removed from my vehicle - how did that even happen?? I have included a few sample photos of the painting fiasco. The first few photos were taken on September 17, 2020 - the first time Mario told me that they were done painting and they were going to install the doors and drawer fronts the next day. Each day after that, the painters would leave, and my daughter and I would mark their mistakes with tape so that they could see what to fix the next day. Obviously, I do not recommend EGK Custom Homes unless you only want woodwork done and zero painting. If that's the case, Armando and Ivan Pineda are excellent for all of your carpentry needs. I hope you all have a better experience with your remodel than I did.

When I declined to continue with a project with Brandon, the company inflated charges to consume the majority of the deposit that I paid them. No physical work was ever performed yet they charged $175 per hour in labor for sending one email to my insurance carrier asking why Xactimate charges were not accepted. They then charged $125 for two Xactimate reports: along with the labor to produce the reports. Very unethical. The owner Darryl stated that they are not in the business of assisting clients in getting work done elsewhere and proceeded to do with my deposit whatever he saw fit for his pockets. I would advise not to use ths company, but if you do.... DO NOT PAY DEPOSIT BY CHECK! They will tell you that to use a credit card the fee is a high percent however, I found, that they do this to keep your deposit because if you pay by check you will have no ally with the bank to dispute funds as you would with a credit card. I would have paid a set fee for an Xactimate with any other company from $60 - $100 with no hourly rate attached. They literally assumed my deposit by charging me for two reports and labor of $175 per hour, which they say was over 3 hours to generate the report.... I guess the paper for the report is $125 and the labor is $175 per hour forover 3 hours for a 3 page report. So unethical. Very bad business practices. The contract states the deposit is refundable if services are not rendered but that is false. I understand taking a flat fee for Xactimates but Darryl went overboard to assume as much of the deposit as possible... Please do your homework on multiple companies... I would not recommend Unique Builders.

What I love most is not everything went as planned but any issues and concerns were addressed and corrected. The carpet in our son's room was stained. The plastic tore and construction dust and feet stained it. Scott had it cleaned and it didn't come up so they had it replaced. No arguments from them. They are not the cheapest, but they justify their price with their work. My wife and I are extremely happy with Unique and will use them again if we have any other home remodeling needs.
