I was passing through Denver on my travels and decided I needed a change to my mixed hair. I did all of the online research I could beforehand (scary trusting new people with my hair) and one of the salons happened to be Babooshka. I had trouble with the website so I called and spoke with Kait, explained my situation, and she recommended the owner, Cue. I arrived with the idea I needed a very short pixie cut - scorched Earth chop. Cue worked with me and really helped me discover a cute, modern, and manageable style that was not as extreme as what I thought I needed. **Also, don't park on the street at certain times.** It was snowing and after 5pm on Friday and the parking enforcement put a boot on a vehicle, and was ticketing others. My rental car was about to be cited and Erin took my keys, ran out and stopped the citation, moved my car, all in the snow with no jacket, as time was of the essence. Way above and beyond. I had a very unprofessional encounter with Molly at this salon. She called me on the morning of my appointment, a few hours before I was supposed to see her, asking me if I could reschedule for the next day. I was disappointed but rescheduled. The next day I arrived to my appointment at the designated time and the salon was locked and empty. I messaged her that I had arrived but no one was inside. She responded 10 min after my appointment was supposed to start apologizing and saying that she couldn't find her keys and had forgotten to message me. She offered to make it up to me by waving the cost of my next haircut. She asked me the times I would be available the coming week. I responded with my availability. After that, radio silence. This is needless to say completely inappropriate and unprofessional behavior. On her appointment site she also asks for your credit card information, and there's a notification that if you no show for your appointment, she has the right to charge you for the cost of the visit. insanely good service, I was a little bit unhappy with a haircut and the owner must have saw i was a little mixed on how i felt about it, so she asked me if i wanted to come back in so they could redo it, and when i got there both the owner and the other worker spent about an hour and a half making it look really good and they would not accept any payment afterward. I also have alopecia so my hair is not easy to work with but they still made it look extremely nice. read more

Perfect, perfect, PERFECT!!! I am a person who, for her entire life, has been unfortunately cursed with terrible salon experiences. Time after time again I had gone to places that had completely jacked me up or left me wanting to cry and I'd be 90-150 out the hole for it! I had Cue, and I let her know this at the beginning of the cut. She had a lengthy conversation with me when I showed her what I wanted to make sure I understood how it would look, and when I was unsure she kept talking with me until I was confident in both her and the cut. I had never experienced something like this before! One I was sure and confident that I was to get the haircut (she allowed me the option to come back another time, when I was more ready-- how considerate!!) it was a lovely experience from start to finish, with some light chatter in between, though I always liked a quiet salon experience and no silence was ever made awkward. Hearing her excited remarks as to how it was turning out was so fun!! It made me even more confident. At the end she put some lovely smelling product in my hair (smelled like freshly-pressed waffle cones!!) and curled it all nice and god when I got home I spent maybe 2 hours just looking at my hair and fluffing it around!!! I was there almost till close and for a two hour haircut + in-depth consult it came to $95, which was certainly worth it. Just remember to download Zelle before you go or bring cash!!!! I've never in my 27 years of life cried after a haircut. I have a pixie cut. I showed Andy a picture of what I wanted, which was a piece-y cut with long sides-- just a tad shorter than what my hair had grown out to, and he said "I can do that!" And then he proceeded to give me a buzz cut. I look like a 12-yr old boy. I loved my hair before. Now I'm going to wear a hat for at least 2 weeks. The bright side is the salon is adorably decorated and they offer you wine, and the prices are great. Maybe go to someone else there. Or just don't. He didn't even try to style it down like I had before, or like the picture- he basically did what he probably would do to his own hair-- slicked it back in one chunk. I would never wear my hair like this- it's not me at all. But it's too short to even pull down over my face now. I went to Babooshka for the first time in April, because I heard they specialized in edgy pixie cuts. Andy was my stylist, and my hair turned out great. I got TONS of compliments everywhere I went. The only problem I would say was that he was very rough with my hair. Shampoo was rough and not relaxing at all, the blow dry burned my scalp, and the scissoring was so rough he practically pulled hairs out of my scalp. I went back to Andy a couple days ago. My pixie had grown out a bit, and I said I wanted to keep growing it out and just wanted to trim the damaged ends off to keep it healthy. I walked in with a bedhead--super tangly. ANDY DID NOT EVEN COMB IT BEFORE HE STARTED CUTTING. He snippped and snipped and then said, "Wow, that's so much lighter now.'' Dude, it's lighter because you ripped out half my hair when you could have just washed and conditioned it. Then he pulled out a razor, and I thought he was going to trim my ends with it....BUT HE SHAVED OFF HALF MY HAIR. ''This is what we did last time,'' he said. But I did not want what he did last time. I wanted to grow out my hair. LEARN TO LISTEN. When he finally got around to washing my hair, the shampoo was rough yet again. The blow dry did not burn as much, so at least he has learned one skill in the past four months. My hair cut went from grown out pixie to BOWL cut. Straight up bowl cut. I asked for someone else to fix it, and the owner turned it into a cute bob for free while I cried in her chair. In short, NEVER go to Andy unless you have some fetish where you want to be tortured and end up with ugly hair. I would have given this place 1 star if the owner hadn't been so sweet. In fact, I was terrified of getting another haircut, and put it off for 4 months, during which time my hair actually grew out to a more pleasing style on its own. But finally the shag mop top that my own scalp had produced without any outside influence needed some expert guidance. Word of Babooshka reached me like an urban legend: the mother of a friend of one of my boyfriend's clients got her hair done there, and it didn't sound overly expensive or overly snooty...or overly cheap. I finally took the plunge. The space is on East Colfax (aka the Fax, or the Bluebird District), and appropriately funky ecclectic inside. Leopard print high heel chairs meet Craftsman tool boxes. Indy music played not-too-loudly. I explained my previous trauma to Baylee, a friendly stylist whose bare arms revealed quite nice ink. I explained that I do not own a blow dryer. I could be a wash-n-go lobbyist, should such a thing ever become necessary. She did not sneer. She did not snort. She did not laugh. Instead, she gave me a decent haircut which suited my coarse hair and coarse approach to styling. I didn't flinch to pay my $30 + tip. It was worth it, and I'll be back for more. What a friendly salon! I had so much fun talking to everyone while getting my hair cut and colored. Gabriella was so professional and clear when she explained what she thought we should do and why. She provided options, advice, and personal opinion but wasn't pushy about anything, and left the final decision to me. I'm so happy I took her advice and did some light layering, and we did the same color scheme I already had (blonde streaks in bangs, the rest dark brown). It wasn't until we were an hour or so into the process (I have a lot of hair), that she shared about a personal situation that came upright before my appointment (insert family dynamics over the holidays here....we all have that crap, right?). I had NO idea that she was dealing with anything, as she never showed it. She was super friendly, chatty, etc. It was only after we got comfortable with each other that she brought it up. First, she spent a lot of time listening to what I wanted - and what I didn't want! Then, since I have so much hair, she also spent a lot of time removing the bulk without making my hair look choppy. I need to give a huge shout out to Will for this cut. I came in not even sure what I wanted to do, and he created a masterpiece. It looked beautiful after the blow out last night but today I tried doing NOTHING to it to see what happened- Magic. Casual and chic, just what I wanted (but didn't know how to explain). He just kills it every time. I don't think I've ever trusted a stylist more. Plus the whole vibe of the place is great, with quirky decorations scattered all over the place. They've got PBR and wine that you can sip while they work. They have affordable but effective products and Will actually takes the time to show you how to use them. Everyone is super friendly and laid back but with huge talent. I've also gotten a cut from Andy, who is usually a barber but I got lucky my first visit- and it was awesome. I picked Babooshka on a whim a few months ago when I was really hurting for a new style. Though I loved the fun, colorful sign and the great location near some of my favorite Colfax haunts, I went in for my appointment with the cautious suspicion of a girl who has had too many weird-looking, expensive haircuts from bitchy stylists in snobby salons. The second I opened the door, two hyper chihuahuas declared me as their new best friend, and several brightly smiling women welcomed me in a totally non-fake way. I was already sold, but after the lovely Rachel, an Aveda master stylist recently transplanted to Denver from Milwaukee, styled my hair, I knew I had finally found my perfect salon! I just returned for my second cut with Rachel and she made my hair look great in just under 30 minutes. Usually I go home and wash out the styling goop and desperately try to re-style my cuts into something I can manage. Rachel's cuts are so cute that I have to rush home to take digital pictures of the exact way she styled my hair in the hopes that I can re-create it as well. Babooshka is affordable, as well, with your first cut at $35 and $40 thereafter. Totally worth it for a style that you don't have to constantly fuss with and update every two weeks. Rachel promised me that my cut would grow out and still look stylish after six weeks, and she was right! I hate to write this because Andreawas nice and did a decent job giving me a trim...but my husband and I live in a small town in Colorado and drove to Denver for the day literally just to get some decent haircuts. 5 hour drive. Didnt want it to be wasted so looked at reviews of salons and Babooshka seemed like a reliable place. We are now sitting in a second, more expensive salon getting his hair fixed. I mean, Lloyd Christmas bad. I couldn't even pretend. If i could post a picture of all the jagged uneven edges and holes in his hair, I would. I love me some Babooshka. I started going here to see sweet Gabriella after moving to Colorado. She understands I'm a weirdo about my hair. I'll come in and say 'CUT IT OFF!' and she will. And then a few months later I'll come in for a trim and say 'Oh, you know I'm growing it out'. Then back I come 'CUT IT OFF!'. My hair grows fast I have this option. She always gives me a nice cold PBR when I arrive, and makes my hair look fabulous, which I love. Babooshka ain't ya grandma's hair salon, but I think even grandma would dig it there. Especially if grandma likes to suck down a cold can of PBR while she gets her hair did. I get my hair cut and styled maybe twice a year because I'm growing it out and don't have high-maintenance hairstyles anymore. Soooo I'm not exactly the greatest salon customer, but Babooshka still treats me like I'm the shit supreme and that's why I keep coming back. OK...OK...what really keeps me coming back is the fact that Gabriella is my stylist and damn does that girl have her hair game on lock--cut, color, everythaaang! She's super sweet, awesome to talk to and she knows exactly what I want. She helped me turn my over-razored, super-layered, mega-damaged rocker mop into a long, thick, luxurious mane of hair and I love her for it. Seriously, Gabriella is incredible! Since I only book appointments a few times a year, I'm always terrified that she'll be gone, but she's stuck around and I am very thankful for that. I usually get my hair colored by her too and she's a fucking magical hair-dying wizard. They have this product in that can put color over freshly dyed hair without having to bleach it out first so she tried it out on me and now I have vibrant red streaks over my black/violet hair. It looks hamazing! Love this shop! The other stylists seem really nice and the owner is a doll, but Gabriella is Queen Awesome of Hair Mountain. And she rides motorcycles and always looks cute and has the best stories! How much cooler can she get?! Fate sent me to this salon, I just know it. I'd never heard of it before, but within the last week I've heard about it from three separate people AND it caught my eye on Yelp for the first time. Everyone in the world is singing Babooshka's praises to me! I just got my hair cut a week ago, though, so I went with my mom to check it out this morning. I'm hooked. My mother keeps her hair very long and is always unhappy after a haircut, because she can ask for an inch off the bottom with simple, long layers and the stylist will inevitably decide that she REALLY wants her hair five inches shorter with choppy bangs. Christy D (whose name I am most certainly misspelling) was amazing. She listened carefully and didn't assume that she knew more about my mother's hair than my mother did, then gave her the most beautiful cut I have ever seen. All day I've had to stop and exclaim, "Holy freaking crap! You have the prettiest hair I have ever seen!" Yeah, i know, an n+1 happy reviewer... Went in there, and got a cute haircut and haircolor from Rachel. Waited a bit before reviewing to make sure that in lasts more than a week (it does). So i don't have much more to say about the all experience that you can't read in other reviews, but there is that : the all time i was there (or almost) another hairdresser was doing a mohawk on the phone answering guy (looked like 16 to me or so), and he had his hair dyed the most beautiful blue. I was totally hypnotized. I watched for about 40 minutes, it was that good. So i dont know if you will have the same experience but that was cool. read more

I have been a customer of this salon for over a year, and have even brought in other customers, but after this last experience I no longer recommend this place to anyone. Blondes always want more blonde... That being said, I went in and asked my stylist for light/silver blonde. First he questioned how professional that was for my job (Excuse me but that's my choice not yours!) Then he told me he wouldn't do that because of the damage it would cause.. So we discussed a compromise of doing just blonde highlights (my usual). The stylist then dyed my roots dark chocolate brown, then he asked me to wait wet hair & all while he washed and cut another client! I walked out with an ombré! A VERY OVERCHARGED ombré at that! I was charged a full color, full highlight, and $24 worth of toner! What!? I returned later to discuss how upset I was with my color and the stylist didn't even have the courtesy to take off his ultra hipster sunglasses to look me in the eye. The salon did reimburse me, but I have lost all respect for their customer service and ability to give their customers what they ask for... Thanks for the brown hair guys..... I had such a fabulous experience at Babooshka even though it could have been horrible! Let me explain: While getting my haircut by Lauren Z. (fabulous at queer cuts!), a drunk man from the street came in and began to hit a stylist out of nowhere (because Colfax). The staff handled it wonderfully and quickly, making sure their staff and the patrons in the building were safe while calling the police and locking the door. It was a completely bizarre experience but at no point was I concerned for my personal safety because the staff worked quickly. Now, onto the haircut - I'm growing out my pixie cut and while I want my hair to just be long already, it isn't. And growing out a cut means a mullet is bound to happen. Fortunately, my hair had all gotten to the long bowl cut stage and Lauren Z. was able to put it into a really cute, non-soccer-momish A-line bob. Then the Bab is your kind of place. Yes, it is not a calming, relaxing kind of feel you would get from a more spa-like place. But if this is the kind of vibe you enjoy, then go here! Because this place has gained so much popularity, and has so many clients, that your stylist may not remember your name too well until your 3rd or 4th visit, and I like my salons a little more personal. This review is way overdue but no less deserving of Rachel, whom I highly recommend at Babooshka. I have wavy hair and saw a number of fab reviews from other women in the same boat, so I went. As others like me have experienced, not everyone knows how to cut wavy hair. And when that happens, disaster strikes. Believe me. Even if the cut is adequate, most times I have to go home and restyle it my myself. Rachel not only gave me a great cut that I can wear wavy or straight, she styled it for a party I was going to that night and gave me tips on how to get the same results at home. This girl knows her stuff, gave me a hip tip on a photo iPhone app, and is just in the all-around, good people category. I may even get a bit of color, since she's a pro in that area as well, when I go back next month. Babooshka definitely has a gem in their midst. read more

Babs, I just can't stay away from you and Rachel. And that's not a bad thing! I'm a super bad candidate for growing out my hair, even though I talk about it all the time. (Mantra: Talk is easy - doing is hard.) After about 2 months, I start going stir-crazy. So, at the beginning of December it was way past time to get it taken care of...no color since July, and helmet-head looking layers that were making me feel like I didn't want to leave the house. Feeling impulsive, I told Rachel I wanted some bright magenta again. Rather than give me root to tip, all-over magenta, she expertly painted up some wings (it looks better than I'm describing it) and trimmed up my totally uneven locks. About a week later I stopped back in to have one little lock trimmed up (although my BFF tells me it's all in my head). While I was in the chair, Rachel offered to style me up with a curling iron and I walked out of there looking cute and bouncy. A look I have yet to recreate, but I'm hoping Rachel starts offering curling-iron classes. Yes? I haven't gone for a haircut here yet, but I love getting my eyebrows done here. I've had multiple staff members (this last time it was Sean) and I always walk away happy. I'm one of those people who is always hesitant to try a new place/person when it comes time to get my eyebrows waxed, but the staff has been so talented and welcoming every time I've been here that I never worry about who does my brows. If you're looking for a cheap ($10) quick, well-done wax, look no further. read more

I just moved to Denver from NYC. In NYC I maintained a complicated coloring of blonde on top with red underneath. I searched and searched reviews to try and find a salon to go to that I could trust to handle color, and not be expensive. I hit the nail on the head going to Babooshka's. I made my appointment with Jennelle and she touched up my blonde, and changed the red to purple. I couldn't be happier with the turn out! Will definitely be returning. I've been living in Denver for a year now and have tried out a few salons... thankfully I have finally found a salon that my hair can call home. With the eclectic decor and laid back staff, I felt as though I was walking in to my best friend's home. Fortunately, Titty is much more talented with a pair of scissors and hair dye than my bff. Now with a name like Titty, you aren't quite sure what to expect. Let me tell you, she is amazing and worked magic on my hair. I love my cut and the color is beautiful. I now have an even blend of chestnut brown... not an easy task with the multitude of uneven color that I walked in with. To top it all off, I was pleasantly surprised at how inexpensive my evening of transformation cost not to mention the free PBRs. This is definitely a place that I will return to. read more
