The logical part of my brain is telling me to gate keep this place and the skills of Sequoia. Sequoia is the best esthetician I've ever been to in my life. She has changed my life, and my friends lives. Brow tint, wax, Brazilian she is an absolute artist. Her service is professional and she tailors your service to what will look best on you. THAT IS FACTS. You will get SO MANY COMPLIMENTS. I feel 300% more confident after getting my brows done with sequoia. She is the real hidden gem of Denver. Brow girlies look no further. I can be so hungover, dehydrated, crust of the earth but I still look fly cause my brows look that good. And a Brazilian- she never misses a single hair. I'm serious.

I've been a Waxing the City regular for almost two years now. Without going into too much detail, there's a reason why I give them five stars, even if the visits can be painful. Rachel at the front desk is the most cheerful, efficient person I've encountered at any spa, beauty salon or place of business in this realm. Whether you're calling last minute, checking in or booking an appt in advance, she's got you, Boo. Yes, waxing hurts. Whomever says it's painless probably also says tattoos tickle or thong underwear is comfortable. That being said, WTC trains all of their aestheticians extensively in the art of hair removal. Yes, it's an art. Anyone that can get my armpits smooth and hair-free in six strips or less is better than Van Gough. I am a Black Book customer, which is a pre-purchased package program. It includes a set number of services at a small discount plus 20% off additional products purchased. Even though I live across town from the Lodo location, I will make my regular 3-4 week trips to the OG Waxing the City because I like them that much. I don't love the waxing, but the ladies and service can't be beat.

I am a giant baby when it comes to waxing. I try not to be, but with the first pull of wax from my brow my eyes well up with tears and I can't stop them from coming until about 5 minutes after the whole experience is done. And forget tweezers. I think because of a traumatic childhood event involving a toothpick, the arch of my foot and a doctor with the biggest pair of tweezers I've ever seen I am extremely reluctant to let anyone come near me with tweezers in hand. I'm sure you can imagine this makes me a waxing client that everyone is dying to have. Since Wax in the City has received such awesome accolades I decided to give them a try. As I waited in the room they offered me a drink - water or miniature sodas in a can (8 ounces I believe). We all know I'm a sucker for minis so I was already feeling happier and less nervous. Then Skye came out to take me to a back room. They have a ton of individual rooms here which is awesome. But, not as awesome as Skye. She couldn't stop me from crying, stupid tear ducts, but she did stop me from feeling any sort of pain that I've associated with wax and she gave me tissues to clean up my tears. Plus, she used the tweezers and I hardly felt a thing. As an added bonus she didn't even get upset when I jumped the first time I felt the tweezers on my brow. I think the prices are really reasonable and tipping is already included which is awesome. I will definitely go back and visit Skye next month when it's time to wax again. You should check her out, too.

Saturday turned out to be "splurge on Stephen" day, and I decided to get a few areas waxed. (Not "there". Nice try. I'll never tell. :) My go-to peeps at Studio Urban Wax were not available for days -- not even for a single service -- so I decided to flip to their next major competitor on Yelp, WTC. I was pleasantly surprised to find the "mention Yelp and get 50% off your most expensive service" tag when I looked at reviews. So down to Market St I fled. I was greeted pleasantly when I entered their cute front waiting room, lots of windows on the front wall and a drink fridge that carried those baby cans of soda. The receptionist was pleased when I mentioned Yelp...I think it's a mutual "hey, we both know what we're getting out of this" relationship -- I'm getting cheaper services, you're getting a review. :) My waxer was Michelle who got to me very quickly after I arrived. She performed her art very well using a blue wax for some areas and a gooey wax the consistency and look of honey on other areas. So far so good, right? Mostly. Except I looked a few times, and there were some hairs she missed. Glaring ones, to me. To her credit, she had me check her work on the areas I could see, but still, I shouldn't have had to point them out. And on a somewhat large area, I was left with hairs a few millimeters high; much better than I started with, but not beyond notice when I ran my hand over the skin. Michelle said it was because my hairs seemed to be growing at different rates. That may be, but shouldn't it all have been smooth when you were done, ripped down to the skin? I think it should have. (now the dreaded words...) I didn't have that problem at Studio Urban Wax when they did that. So in 4-6 weeks, I'll be hitting SUW again, and seeing if I experience that issue I experienced here. If I don't and my skin is as smooth as a babys, then WTC will forever be my "backup" place; certainly competent, but we're paying for results here, right? To be fair, I'm right. So we'll see what happens. If I see WTC's issue at SUW, then I will glower at my tummy (there you go, now you know, worth the wait? bleah. :p ) and curse at my weird-rate growing hairs. For a first experience here, pretty good.

The esthetician was friendly, boisterous, loud and immediately jumped into performing the service without instructions or warnings. She did a good job applying the under eye patches, tints, etc. When it was time to take the tint off she dug cotton balls into my eyes - way deeper than was necessary and without care - that toxic dye got in my eyes and it was SO painful. She washed my eyes out with saline like 6 times because I demanded it but they still stung. She never apologized - just "yep, it stings don't it", like I was some sort of torture subject. I don't think she was properly trained! I have had my brows and lashes tinted dozens of times in other salons and sure there is a little sting but the esthetitian knows how to carefully remove the dye so that the sting is minimal and she is compassionate and thorough with the saline. I don't think this woman got all the dye out because my eyes still stung for the rest of the day and into the night, extra dry, red on the inside of the eyelid... 3 days later my eyes are still recovering. Google says the dyes are not FDA approved and can cause serious damage to the eyes - I was freaking out. The place is cute but I would NEVER go here again.

The service itself was performed well, and I was satisfied with the quality of the wax. However, the subsequent events have caused significant disappointment and lead me to strongly advise caution to other male clients. The day after my service, I was unexpectedly contacted by the manager and informed that I was banned from the establishment due to an "inappropriate conversation" with the esthetician. This notification was perplexing, as the conversation in question was initiated by the esthetician's small talk. During the service, Reagan asked about my weekend plans. When I initially mentioned that the plans were personal, she indicated that was acceptable. I then shared that my wife and I planned to visit The Scarlet Ranch, a known lifestyle club. As my wife and I are open about our lifestyle, I was willing to engage in general, surface-level discussion. Reagan continued to actively participate, asking multiple follow-up questions about the club's atmosphere, membership fees, types of events, and clientele. I was careful to keep my responses strictly professional and non-sexual, focusing on logistical and social aspects. At no point during this sustained conversation did the esthetician indicate that she felt uncomfortable or ask to change the subject. Therefore, receiving a call informing me I was banned--and being told by the manager that the conversation was "inappropriate to have while getting a male Brazilian"--was a significant surprise. It seems highly unprofessional to ban a paying customer without the service provider communicating any discomfort during the interaction. Feedback on Communication and Professionalism: For the management and staff: Professional protocol dictates that if a client's conversation makes a staff member uncomfortable, the staff member must clearly and politely redirect or end the topic of conversation. Customers cannot be expected to know a provider's boundaries, especially when the provider is actively engaging and asking follow-up questions. A simple, "I prefer to keep our conversation limited to the service," would have been sufficient and professional. This lack of professional communication has resulted in the loss of a repeat client and has created an unnecessarily unpleasant experience. I urge management to review their policies on staff interaction and boundary setting. Recommendation for Male Clients: Due to this experience, I do not recommend this establishment for males seeking a Brazilian wax. While the technique was good, the overall lack of staff maturity and professionalism in handling client conversations is concerning. Prospective clients might consider alternatives like European Wax Center for a lower-cost option. I hope this feedback leads to better communication practices so that other clients do not feel targeted or confused in the future.

So walking into European Wax Center to have strangers rip hair out of my shoulders feels... culturally complicated. My people did not survive centuries of history just for me to wake up one day and say, "You know what would be fun? Let's pour hot wax on my body and rip out my follicles like I'm preparing for the Olympics." And yet... here I am. European Wax Center is clean, efficient, and very easy to book online. Which is great, because it means you never have to call a stranger and say the sentence: "Hello, I'd like to schedule some aggressive hair removal." You check in and within minutes someone is calmly spreading hot wax on you like they're frosting a cake. A cake that is unfortunately attached to your shoulders. Then comes the rip. Somewhere deep inside, my inner Greek barbarian wants to roar and run back into the mountains. Instead I sit there quietly thinking, "Ah yes... this is how the modern man suffers." The staff are nice and professional, though the vibe is definitely efficient rather than spa-day indulgence. This is less "luxury relaxation" and more "well-run hair removal logistics operation." I respect that. Huge bonus: I can walk there. Few things are more humbling than casually strolling down the street knowing you're about to pay someone to violently remove your fur. For the record, I am not going full dolphin. The chest hair stays. That's protected territory. Bear energy must remain somewhere. ;) This is simply about taming the wilderness so I don't look like I'm wearing an invisible sweater. Final verdict: Clean. Fast. Convenient.
