Really great to have a higher end bakery in Longmont. I got a smattering of items and rated them individually int he pictures. The two highlights (neither of which I captured in pictures) were the mortadella sandwich (with mayo and what I think was pistachio) - EXCELLENT. It was a little pricey at $14 but a simple and hearty lunch. The other stand out item was their brownie - It was a mix of a little lava cake and chocolate fudge - again a little pricey but of all the things I got it was worth every penny. There is a walk up/take-away area and a sit down area that was charming. Parking is not always easy in the area but worth the struggle. Went here 30 mins prior to closing time so didn't see the morning activity or rush of people getting pastries for breakfast. The aesthetic of the shop is nice! It's next to the retro gas station in this part of town. I thought they didn't have any pastries left when I got there but bought myself a massive almond croissant which was divine. And also a chocolate budino which was a chocolate tart with caramelized cornflakes on top :) will try to be back in the morning to see how crazy the line gets! read more

I love coming here. I think the service is great and same with the ambiance. Most of the food is delicious but the sandwiches and pizza don't have enough toppings for the amount of bread. The almond croissant is my all time favorite also the chocolate eclair and plum cake! read more

I looked over their website and read their menu one Tuesday evening. Thought I'd head over Thursday lunch for a burger. I wanted to try the pepperoni pizza and a piece of chocolate cake as well. Problem was, they don't have burgers anymore, no pepperoni pizza, and no chocolate cake. They said no one works the website. They kinda made me feel bad for speaking up about the information on their website. So-I purchased an almond croissant and took it to go. As I started to cut my first slice of Babette's olive oil, Maldon salt & herbs de provence encrusted boule, I was reminded of 1976 when I was a boy, waiting in line at the new Space Mountain ride. The head-exploding excitement was so thick I could cut it with... well, the bread knife I had in my hand yesterday. As I slice into the perfectly thick crust, the herbaceous toppings (including subtle pops of salt) stick to your fingers enriched with the wonderful fragrance of luscious olive oil. The anticipation and excitement pays off instantly as you continue to slice through, revealing the soft inner dough textured with a myriad of various-sized air pockets. I'm transported back to my childhood again where neighborhood German, Jewish, Italian & French bakeries were everywhere bringing their centuries-old baking techniques & traditions to New York. After slathering on a thin layer of soft butter, my first bite illuminates the true magic of this artisan bread. The soft inner body has perfect elasticity-- it is somehow light & airy, yet has a depth & gravity to the dough. Each bite is a textural masterclass for lesser bakers. The foundational sour dough mix of white, wheat, rye, spelt and other grains is nothing short of amazing. This is not just truly great bread for Colorado, this is a work of art that belongs in the world bakery hall of fame (if there was one ;-) And honestly, all their bread is like this, from the long baguettes to their square Pullman loaves. Food: Almost everything here on the display is overcooked, and wayyy to black all over. Their breads are definitely burnt. Their regular croissants were luckily saved from the burnt curse, and were delicious, on the edges however, it still tasted a little burnt. The almond cake is delightful though, smooth, silky buttercream and the cake has the perfect hit of almond. Service: The service is typically good here if you don't mention anything about their overcooked food, otherwise they can be defensive. Ambience: The inside is nice and has a nice sitting area. Overall: Not too pleased with the fact more than half of the things served here are inedible, but very happy with the things that I can eat. We were staying in Longmont, CO on our way to RMNP, but of course before we head out we need try one of local bakeries, there were a few good ones that popped up but Babettes Bakery caught our eye, highly rated and close by, so you know we had to go try it out. The line was short but we still had time to survey the assortment of treats. These are the treats we decided on: 1. Regular Croissant / spot on delicious - bigger than most other establishments. 2. Chocolate chip salted cookie / A+ moist and a little gooey just the way I like it 3. Croque Monsieur - (ham and cheese filled croissant) - this was the first thing we devoured before even trying anything else - so you know it was good 4. Almond filled morning bun - ok so this was a little dry - but the filling was great - I usually like to heat my morning bun up just a tad - but forgot to ask this time 5. Raspberry Tart - a little too sweet for us but it could appeal to a real sweet tooth person. Overall everything was good, but the first three items stood out for us. The latte and coffee were good as well. If you are in the Longmont, CO area and are looking for a nice morning treat and beverage this place will not let you down. read more

My friend has been suggesting we meet at Babette's for a while now. But it's too far for lunch on a workday. We were in Longmont today and we made it happen. We got two pizza slices, acorn squash with fennel and a sausage pizza. I regretted asking for a middle slice instead of a corner slice. The bread is so so so so SO GOOD! The airy huge croissant was perfectly laminated. And the hazelnut ho-ho was not too sweet and superbly chocolate-y. Mmm. Once we got back home, I remembered that my friend had espoused their mortadella sandwiches as the best she's ever had. I don't think I have a choice. I need to go back. Omg pastries here are SO good! Came on a Sunday morning around 8am and they appeared to have everything available. Their croissant dough type products were incredibly light and flaky. We had a chocolate croissant, cherry danish, morning bun, and cruffin with lemon curd and toasted meringue. Least favorite was the chocolate croissant only bc the chocolate was a bit more bitter than I prefer, and the outermost layer was a tad overdone. The cherry danish was to die for, as was the cruffin. And morning bun was also excellent. If ever back in the area I will definitely return! It would be worth the drive from Boulder and or Denver! read more

If you do a search for the word burnt, you will see multiple reviewers going back five years complaining about burnt pastries and bread at this place. You can't sell a slice of burnt quiche for eight dollars. It's ridiculous. Two stars because the croissant was ok despite being over baked and having a mere sliver of chocolate in it. The pastry with hazelnut, chocolate & escargot was alright but the bitter/burnt taste of the pastry bread dominated the taste. We also had a pastry with blueberries that was better and the filling part in the middle tasted good. Regarding coffee & tea, they only serve in 8 ounce cups. No larger sizes. They told us that if we wanted bigger cups of beverages to go to another place a block away. And an 8 ounce cup of Americano is $3. When I asked the barista for cream, she ignored me. I asked her again and she then took the cream out and told me as if I should know, that the cream is always kept in the fridge. The Good: Food is delicious and coffee is good. I like the location with inside and outside tables, clean restrooms, and self-serve water. The Bad: I have often abandoned the line because service is dreadfully slow, likely because they are understaffed. On Saturdays and Sundays the line is out the door and sometimes around the block. There is only ever one register open. Why not staff an additional person to prepare drinks and heat food during peak times? Why not equip servers with a Square Reader (POS) for credit card transactions? read more

Your mileage may vary depending on what you get here. I arrived about 5 minutes prior to when they opened and there was 3 other people waiting in line. They are pretty strict during COVID (which I am very thankful for!) and only allow 3 customers in at a time then wipe down the counter after each transaction. If you arrive later, probably safe to say, expect a wait. I read about them and found their natural fermentation method very intriguing and decided I needed to drop everything and visit this place. After trying their more traditional sourdough, I have determined it is some of the best I have ever tried. I personally like it better than San Francisco sourdough. I felt Babette's sourdough is less sour but lighter and more airy. They happen to use 100% hydration whereas most places (myself included) will use between 70-85% hydration. The higher the hydration content, the harder it is to work the dough. I was thoroughly impressed with the perfection of their sourdough. I almost got their almond croissant which was fantastic, again, very light and airy, lightly sweetened and crunchy in the right places. However, I see what others were talking about where the center had a few spots where it was maybe undercooked? It didn't bother me, just pointing it out. I tried their oatmeal cookie and I don't know what happened there. It was gross. I took a bite and basically trashed it. It also looks like other local beverages and specialty items are sold there, so I grabbed a pint of Gelato Boy gelato. It is not false advertisement that it is some of the best gelato I've had. All in all, looks like Babette's specialty is sourdough. I likely will not be trying their other items but stick to what they are amazing at. read more

I was so excited to try this place. I schlepped out to Longmont from Denver just to try the pastries one morning. I ordered a chocolate croissant and a plain croissant. I couldn't wait to tear into the chocolate pastry and started eating it one step out of the bakery. The first bite was dry....the second bite was dry.... It tasted charred throughout (I know some people really enjoy it that way) but in this case the chocolate tasted scalded. I then tried the plain croissant. The outside was a dark char but the inside was undercooked as you can see from the picture. Chewy and doughy, the whole experience was disappointing. The quality was not what I was expecting from this acclaimed bakery, especially at the price charged. I have heard great things about the pizza and may venture back to try a pie. read more

Food is very good when it's not burnt to a crisp. There was a time this place was so highly regarded that it couldn't do anything wrong. Let's all be honest with each other, that ship has sailed. I've made my last 20+ minute drive just for their goods. Their Croissant dough is great and it's an awesome twist in danishes. Their sourdough is good but you can find solid loaves of sourdough at other places now. Half the stuff is burnt beyond edible and at this point I'd rather buy something without being scowled at. The service is awful, nobody who works there seems to even have the slightest desire to be there or to be of service. It's the most morose and dull environment I've been to in a long time. Unwelcoming, no energy, sterile and boring as all get out. I was in with my 5 year old who wanted a croissant with jelly. I asked if they had that and they looked at me like I had 4 heads. It's a bakery, that's a pretty fair request. I was told " we have our butter and jelly on a baguette special". I asked if it was possible to just put the jelly on a croissant instead of baguette and the person working had to go ask if they could do that, he actually went and asked and someone who actually told him "NO"???!!! I spent many years in the service industry. I worked in a number of different restaurants of all kinds at all levels. I've had hundreds of employees throughout the years. I've never told a guest or an employee to tell a guest "no" to something we could do. That is an absolute abomination and I would've happily kept this to myself if it was simply something they didn't have--"oh sorry, we don't have jelly". That would be totally understandable but you're literally putting it on a different type of bread product as your special of the day. Didn't even try to come up with a creative solution if perhaps they didn't have the bandwidth to cut and jelly the croissant--how about I give you a side of jelly? Nope. Instead I ended up buying a 2 Oz jar for an additional $6 so my kid could have what is now a $14 croissant with jelly, before tip for such amazing service. Sorry, this place officially sucks. And I'm not the only one who has noticed. When mentioning this to multiple people in the area the responses I got were: "the service in that place always sucks", "why is everyone who works there always so miserable and inhospitable"? "That place feels like walking into a morgue", "it's the unfriendliest place I ever go and don't know why I go back". "I once heard an employee scream at a customer on the phone and curse them out while I was standing in line". I can only imagine that this is the result of poor leadership. This kind of attitude and environment can only come from the top. They're clearly just empowering people to put things in bags, not be a restaurant or service industry establishment. That's a shame, some of us would rather have a kind "good morning" or a smile when we're getting raped for $8 on a simple croissant. So I think this is likely the last time I make my way over there. I encourage others to think about their experiences and if it's worth the drive or wait in line or expense. Because it's definitely not worth the combination of those things. Let's stop holding undeserving places on a pedestal they haven't earned. COVID ended a long time ago, you can certainly do better if you prioritize it. Being a top bakery doesn't mean you have to be aholes. Take a note from Zingermann's and consider sending your staff to their trainings. read more

I understand that Covid has been hard, but his repeated behavior is inexcusable. All businesses have had a hard time, and this is the only place that has treated people so poorly over and over again. Overall a good bakery, however they dedicated a huge space to their pizzeria which is basically off limits unless the pizza side of the house is open. That forces patrons to sit outside on cold, lifeless, metal tables. Also, the owner treats customers like children, which is incredibly off putting. It's their choice, however they have taken to social media berating people into getting vaccinated. In my opinion, there are other, more positive ways to encourage customers to support public health initiatives. Instead the owner decided to curse and scream at her loyal customer base. I made my first visit to this gem this morning and was greeted by a long line of faithful customers. It moved efficiently and was a good sign that the baked goods were worth the wait. Croissant dough seems to be their specialty as each pastry we ordered (between $5-7 each) exhibited a flakey texture. I enjoyed the morning bun, though the outside had too much sugar. The coffee cups (to go) are very small for $4, six or eight ounces and my latte had an interesting flavor. Truly a unique and fabulous tasting bakery. The owners of this bakery/cafe are true artisans of their profession. This isn't Panera people, this is a true experience of the baking craft. Their flavors and confections are so delicious, the quality is super high. Their choices in baking temps and different char on their breads and baked goods are purposeful and intended to draw out multiple flavor profiles. They are also super duper nice people.
