I visited this place after 2 years & Baba Sweets has a 180 degree turn around for good. They have improved immensely in terms of service, dining & customer interaction. Their prices appealed me a lot. *Where else would you find Chana Bhatura for $4.99 & That's commendable!! Even the combos are great. After living here SoCal since 1994, I finally found a great place where I can buy delicious Indian sweets. I was amazed at their variety of sweets that they offer. I have not tried their food but will do one of these days. Inside the restaurant, the spice aroma that day was not strong. There is a slight hint but not too bad. A little background to my spice aroma madness. ANY Indian restaurant (generally speaking), I usually stay away from dining at the restaurant if I need to do or go somewhere afterwards. Reason being is, those spices from the food gets on my outfit and hair. Coming out of a restaurant, I feel unclean and smelly of spices. That's why if I plan on eating at an Indian restaurant, I make sure it is my last stop for the day so that I can go home and take shower again. I ordered a massive lunch for $6.49. I had the lentils which were fantastic. It was Spicey but done just right. The Saag while not quite as good, was excellent. They served some fresh naan as well which was a great supplement as was the yellow rice. The salad was intensely spicey and probably not for everyone but I liked it the chutney was good. The only thing I didn't enjoy was the yogurt which was extremely tart. The servers were nice. But I tried to talk to one woman behind the counter about my impending trip to India. After a few comments I could tell she had no idea what I was saying. But she made an effort to be friendly to me, so that was nice. So for just taste, I would highly recommend. I'm updating my review because I just found out that Jalebi Junction is now Officially Baba Sweets, and they've also recently expanded! You'll still find them in the same location but they've got a new store front and now serve hot Indian food and you can DINE-IN! Dining area is decently sized and was neat and clean. Prices appeared very reasonable for both food and sweets. We bought a pound of mixed sweets at they range from $5-6/lb depending on the item, and for the quality, that's a great price. We also bought a pound of jalebi for $3-4/lb and they were fantastic. We'll stop by soon and dine-in for some savory food. AND as much as I wanted to travel there...that's not happening anytime soon, so I ended up in Canoga Park for my quest to find authentic Indian sweets. Omg I love this place! When we got to the sweet section counter the guy behind the counter probably could tell it was our first time there and he didn't hesitate to answer questions and giving us samples to taste.....he was so nice! We tried and got: Pistachio and Mango Barfi - Delicious! Taste like a nutty milky fudge. Its a dense milk and sugar base dessert. Not too sweet. . My favorite is the pistachio one. Kalakand - Good! Taste like a soft milk cake. It's a condensed milk , soft cheese, and sugar base dessert. Again not too sweet. My husband loved this one. Gulab Jamun - Yummy! It's like a donut hole dip in rose water syrup. It's a milk solid base and dough? This is very sweet and addicting! We have had this before many times, but this is the best tasting gulab jamun. Both our favorite. In addition we got some other stuff too, but I cannot remember the names. They were also all good. Also the samosa and savory dishes look so good at the food counter. If we didn't have such a huge lunch before coming to Baba Sweets, the hubby and I would have tried their delicious looking vegetarian eats at the food counter - next time. Another place that deserves no stars because of their lack of good customer service. Like seriously, wth! My mom and I were standing in line to order (it was not a crowded day, and there were not many people). 2 people who were in line behind us totally cut us and went was to pay. We were like wth, but didn't say anything. It was finanlly our turn and when we went up to place an order and pay the cashier said there were 3 people waiting (there was no one around) and we were waiting to order. And he gave us our card back. If we were in the wrong line, he could've told us, but instead he was just rude and didn't even explain what was happening. Freaking disrespectful as hell! You don't treat your customers this way. And when he saw the other people cut he didn't tell them anything either. I will never return to this place! Ever! I came here purely for sweets, but their savory items looked decent as well. The only sweets item I have consistently from Indian cuisine is the Galab Jamun. It was nice to see they have Kala Jamun as well. In total, I bought 2 lbs of sweets with 1 lb purely for half Galab Jamun and half Kala Jamun. For the other box, I bought pista burfi (pistachio), chocolate burfi, mango burfi, gajar (carrots) burfi, kalakand, and milkcake. In this other box, I've never had these other items so it was an adventurous attempt, because I figured how bad could they be. Service-wise, they are pretty nice despite being a different ethnic group. Perhaps it was also because I was buying two boxes versus others that may just buy one box. How their system work: You order by the pound and it doesn't seem like you can buy the sweets individually. What I mean by that is that they sell their sweets in box increments of pounds. You say if you need a 1 lb box or a 2 lb box (or etc). They will fit the sweets accordingly until it is around 1 lb and they'll stop. At the very least, they didn't seem to offer buying individually versus just one piece. If you order everything in the same price per pound, you get charged for that price. If one is a dollar more, you get charged that one instead for the whole box even if you only ordered one piece of the pricier item. A bit of a nuance pricing, but some may care. For example, I requested half a pound of Galab Jamun and half Kala Jamun in one box and there are 5 Galab and 4 Kala Jamun in them. When weighed, it was approximately 1 lb in there as well. Not sure if it's true, but Indian sweets are hefty by weight. Considering they sell it by the pound, a person who knows how to make the sweets may consider it pricey. But for a novice like me, I didn't think it was that large of an expenditure to buy a pound of sweets to try a variety. The cashiers laughed and said we must very love sweets to try this much - thumbs up, yes we am. The burfi are interesting in that their texture are smooth, but it contains a velvety texture that is not crumbly. My least favorite was the chocolate and the mango burfi purely because of flavor. I rather eat the mango fruit and chocolate itself than having it in burfi form I think. For the pista and gajar, it was interesting. As quoted by my girlfriend, she said the gajar is like Gerber's carrot baby food. I don't know, but I guess? I liked those more so because I've never had them before and it was pleasing to taste them. The pista was not overly sweet and was more mellow in taste. The gajar was sweeter and you can taste the carrot vividly. The Kalakand and milk cakes were in-between. Strong milk taste to it with different textures. Kalakand is more cake-like, while the milkcake had a very grainy texture to it. Nice milk taste to it and interesting texture to accompany them. Lastly, the two Jamun are decent. Not as great as fresh, but the amount of sweetness wasn't overbearing. The Galab one is sweeter than the Kala one. The spongy texture isn't bad and fully immersed with the rose water syrup. I wished they were bigger of course. These were sized kind of like frozen meatballs. All in all, I still enjoyed the sweets and if I have a desire for more, I wouldn't mind buying some more from here if I'm in the area. read more
