A family member who lives in Bristol recommended Baba Sushi; one of us has a gluten allergy as does she. We're so glad she did. The location is great overlooking the harbor, there are two floors inside and patio seating. We had a couple of signature cocktails to kick us off; two rolls (unagi avocado and the Holiday roll); and tuna, yellowtail, salmon and octopus nigiri. I started with the miso soup and an oyster & quail egg shooter amped up with tequilla and got an 8oz cold sake mid-way through. Everything was really, really good. Our server was completely up to speed on food alllergies and guided us through what could be made gluten-free; she was really great throughout. Mack was responsible for making us killer cocktails and checking in on us throughout. She's fantastic, capable, friendly. The whole staff gave off a great enthusiastic vibe for working there which seems to be totally genuine. The nigiri fish cuts were generous to say the least, each piece could have been a two-biter. Considering all we ate and drank, we were really surprised when we got the check how reasonable it was. Great spot for sushi by the water in Bristol! You may miss this place if you don't pay attention. They have some seating on the deck as well as down below. I got the spicy margarita; it was refreshing and delicious. For food, we got the sushi spring roll and the dragon breath maki roll. Both were unique and pretty good. First time at Baba Sushi in Bristol. Hands down, this is one of the two waterfront dining venues with a best water view. The other joint with great water view is across the town boat parking to Thames Waterside (used to be Goeffs years ago...). Let's get to the conclusion. The water view and drinks are what you come here for, not for sushi. If you really want great sushi, you go some place else, like Ebisu or Ranzan. Location and decor - 5, Service - 3 (Slooow!) Food - 3. Although the prices of the sushi, appetizers and other non-sushi dishes are reasonable, I did not think they were all that special, certainly not what other 5 star reviews will have you believe. Have any of the 5 star Yelpers not had any truly great sushi before? I am not suggesting that you fly to Tokyo and have sushi at Jiro's Michelin 3 star joint. Any place good in the large metro area like Boston, New York, LA, SF, etc. All I am saying is that don't expect the same caliber of sushi here. This place has been open open for a few years now. I have been hesitant to come here partly because of many "mediocre" food and service reviews. I read most of the reviews before deciding to come here today. I thought, how bad could it be? It has been open for a few years and I am sure they had fixed any kinks. Wrong! The reviews were all over the place. Some one star, some 3, and some 5 and 4. I personally think it is more like 3.5. I had edamame and fried gyoza to start. Edamame - meh. Served luke warm with no salt. Gyoza was better. Crunchy skin with good combination of leek/scallion with pork filling. The sauce had a little bit of heat and had right amount of vinegar. Personally, I prefer the pan fried version, but the deep fried version here was well executed. Thumbs up on gyoza. I ordered the tuna maki (maguro rolls) as my main dish. This, I was dissatisfied. Instead of using traditional roasted seaweed (i. e. nori) they opted to use pink soy wrap that had no taste. It has a weird cardboard texture to it. Why? Why spoil a good classic recipe by trying to be chick and inventive? I think this is one reason why I get skeptical about any sushi joint that people rave. These, to my conservative and traditional taste, is not sushi. Too many places, like this place, put emphasis on the visual appeal and forget that the good sushi is about the rice and freshest fish with no sweet sauces all over them. To me, all it takes is fresh fish, properly cooked sushi rice with a bit of salt and vinegar, wasabi and naturally aged tamari for nigiri, and maybe some nori for maki. I am willing to go back for the view and drinks, but not for sushi. read more

So excited to have this 5-star sushi restaurant in the neighborhood! I tried Baba Sushi our last weekend, and was not disappointed by any aspect of my experience. The location is ideal - nothing compares to a beautiful water view in Bristol with outdoor seating! The restaurant itself was tastefully designed, elegant and clean. Upfront I'm gonna say that I'm from Hawaii so my standards for sushi are pretty high. The location is awesome... right on the water and the view is relaxing. Service was a little slow at first when we were seated outside but we moved indoors and caught her attention so it got better. The hamachi Kama was huge! And a pleasant surprise. Shrimp and veggie tempura was ok. I'm used to the traditional light tempura batter, this was a little crunchier than I would like. The nigiri we ordered was salmon, ebi and maguro. The rolls were innovative, fresh and ample in size. The TORO melted in my mouth. Rice was prepared very well. 2. Service was great - very helpful and always smiling. 3. Totally unassuming by looking at the front of the building. Walked to the side, up the stairs and beautiful view and up to date super tasteful decor. From start to finish, everything was amazing and we tried numerous items. Must tries, if you enjoy spicy are the Dragon's Breath sushi roll and Ghost tequila and have them make the spicy margarita cocktail. And last but certainly not least, Mack was our beautiful bartender, who not only is extremely knowledgeable of the food but makes killer cocktails. An alright place to grab a drink with very mediocre sushi. What can you expect from a Japanese restaurant with a Chinese name. Pros: Very cute spot in the upstairs of an colonial house. Cons: We had ordered a starter and sushi. Our sushi arrived before our starter, and we had not been given plates or utensils at all. Our waitress seemed preoccupied chatting with her coworkers behind the bar, and the only worker who seemed to be on top of everything was a young man who was doing everything from bus to bartending. Really horrid sight from the staff. In terms of the sushi, the nigiri was edible but had a very slimy and gummy texture, reminiscent of grocery store and gas station sushi. The raw scallop in the spicy scallop roll immediately tasted rotten and gave us both food poisoning. Like really rotten, so much so it had that sour tinge that doesn't leave your mouth for the rest of the night. You either have to be really drunk, or really high to eat this sushi. Unfortunately I had only ordered a coke (which came after we had already finished our meal) and unsurprisingly our waitress brought a Diet Coke. Our started did arrive eventually and it was very good, edamame with ginger and strong flavors of pepper. Probably the only thing saving this place from one star. In all, it's really disappointing to be so close to the water, and be served fish that is clearly not fresh. Save your money. read more

Talk about an amazing surprise! I always have high hopes when I'm near the water, but with it being a small city I wasn't sure what to expect. We sat outside on the upper patio and enjoyed the views and lovely breeze. The drinks were art and beyond delicious. It was hard to stop at two. I've never had striped bass in sushi, so the sushi chef was kind enough to make a tataki version for us. Ask for the Hog Island Special as we were told it was the first time they served it that way. I was so amazed with how it melted in your mouth and the avocado was a pleasant blend of flavors with the striped bass. Everything was super fresh and not too much rice. Some places get a little carried away with the rice ratio to fish in their rolls, but not here. I wish I lived closer as I would frequent Baba if so. I visited Baba Sushi with my daughter and her boyfriend earlier this week and I was not disappointed. We had some quality cocktails upon being seated. We then started with seaweed salads, which were very generous, and an order of poke tuna on chips that was very tasty, but not super generous. For our main course, we had salmon nigiri, spicy tuna maki, spicy yellowtail maki, salmon and avocado maki plus the special holiday maki. All the sushi was very fresh and well prepared. Yum! I visit a lot of sushi restaurants nationally and Baba Sushi compares favorably. The service at Baba Sushi when I was there was top notch. All the staff was paying attention to masking and respecting COVID guidelines. The prices at Baba Sushi were fair and comparable to any quality sushi restaurant nationally. The atmosphere at Baba Sushi was minimalist and perfect for a sushi restaurant. I expect they have nice outdoor seating weather permitting as well. So my recent visit here was my very first time ever trying sushi. I let that whole stigmata of the word sushi deter me from every trying it. I mean raw seafood, no bueno! But after alot of convincing from family and friends, I finally took the plunge and man am I glad I did. Now, I didn't go down the raw sushi rabbit hole this time. I went with the cooked and tempura sections of the menu. So for apps I ordered their beef tori tori and crab rangoon and it's served with their sweet chili sauce. These may have been the best crab rangoon I have ever had! The tori tori was asolutely delish! For cocktails, I indulged in a couple of mai tai's and I was not disappointed. For the meal I ordered the California, Shrimp Tempura, Philly (smoked salmon) and Park Ave Maki. Zowie Wowie!! I've been depriving myself for so long!! It was absolute heaven! I can honestly say I am now a sushi addict. And everything was fresh, excellent presentation and deliciousness!! Our server was pleasant, nice and attentive. With Warren steadily taking over the foodie scene, it's nice to have a new spot to try in Bristol. Unfortunately, the service was lacking. We came in on an abnormally warm and sunny Sunday afternoon. We were greeted with a bit of angst when we asked if we could join the other few tables sitting outside. I could tell quickly that there was 1 waitress for both the bar and all outdoor/indoor tables and she was clearly overwhelmed. There was maybe 4-5 tables and the 2-3 tables outside just seemed to be enjoying some cocktails.. My main issue was the manager. He seemed to just sit at the bar on his phone instead of helping in the slightest bit. I understand the managers job isn't to bus tables and deliver food but when your one employee is clearly overwhelmed, you need to step in and assist. Overall, the sushi itself was good and the decor and view were were inviting. The patio, both up top and on the main floor, will be great come summer. Giving them the benefit of the doubt that they are still brand new, I will be returning to give them another shot. read more

A vegetable tempura appetizer was over-battered and undercooked. Gummy. The Asian noodles were bland and mostly peppers - my least favorite (and least Asian) vegetable. The sushi was acceptable. Nothing special. Not especially fresh. Particularly since I'm used to the superb sushi served at Miku in Barrington. This is the kind of restaurant you might expect and accept in an airport. My son always requests to eat here when we visit him at college. Good sushi with lots of selection. Nice drink menu and other options besides sushi. Tucked in a restored home on Thames Street in Bristol, Baba Sushi is one of my favorite places to eat. You can't beat the view from the deck in the summer, and inside is cozy and chic. The service is always excellent and the food is incredible. The Angel Maki is a must try, and the Dragonfly Maki is amazing. First time trying this restaurant. Maki rolls were ok. There is way better quality for the price elsewhere in the area. Ordered the chicken fried rice... I'm not even sure what kind of thought process was put into making that dish.. NOT good. Service was rough. But I 'll chock that up to our server being young and learning the ropes. I can't recommend this restaurant based mainly on the poor quality of the food I ordered (especially the fried rice). We had gone there a few months back and sat on the deck and had a wonderful meal. Our waiter's name was John. He was very personablel and made excellent sushi recommendations. We decided to go back 3 weeks ago. While ordering dinner, I was served a glass full of beer that exploded on my lap. Even though John was not a waiter, he came over to help. When we received the bill, I noticed that they had charged us for all four drinks and did not even comp the beer or any of the food??? I have worked in the food and beverage industry for over 30 years. Typically, when a customer gets soaked from a faulty or overheated glass, The restaurant will typically at least cmp the drink. We sat upstairs at one of the high tops and I had the rice noodles and chicken while my wife had multiple different sushi dishes that she said were "so good she could cry". It was a nice atmosphere and the presentation of the food was terrific.
