I walked in around 6:30pm last Saturday with two friends and a small dog. We were seated right away in the dog-friendly outdoor seating area, and the staff even handed out a complimentary brown bag filled with doggie treats! Here's what my group ordered, which was just the right amount to fill up 3 hungry adults: - Platha dipper (5/5): We loved this appetizer! The flatbread was perfectly crispy and flaky. The yellow curry dipping sauce was so tasty that we made sure not a single droplet of curry was left on the plate. - Medium tea leaf salad (4/5): This was not quite mind blowing as it was hyped up to be on the menu, but it was nevertheless refreshing and tasty! - Medium lamb curry (4.5/5): Delicious! You can't go wrong with B Star. The tea leaf salad is so unique. It has a green dressing that is savory and absolutely scrumptious. You don't often come across a savory salad so definitely order it if you don't know what to get. It has some crunchies that will surprise you too. I love how Richmond and SF is filled with really hip and delicious Burmese/Southeast Asian food! Joints such as B Star and Burma Superstar really make Richmond district such a cool place to visit. Food here was nothing short of spectacular. While their menu seems a bit disparate with foods from different cuisines (think Indian, Thai, Malay, Indo + Burmese fusion), there are nuggets of Burmese gems to be found. Their Laksa is a twist on the traditionally Malay/Indo dish with a thicker coconut orange curry broth that is spicier and tangier than their traditional cousin. Platha is a twist on a roti with a thicker, aromatic bread compared to its close Indian cousin, and the coconut curry was super delicious! I also got their viet coffee which was interesting as it was served with condensed milk not mixed on the bottom and separate from the coffee itself. While it was hard to make a homogenous mixture from these two components, it did make the coffee less sweet and less overpowered by sugar - to my liking. This place does get crowded. We were here at 1pm Tuesday during the height of lunch service, and was surprisingly packed. Will miss this place when I'm back to the East coast! read more

I am a Roti/Platha lover and have tried so many versions of it from many restaurants in the Richmond area and I have to say the Platha here at B Star is hands down my favorite! It is so fluffy, crisp and flaky. It's my go to order whenever I come here. Their rainbow salad is also very good, it's healthier tasting than a lot of the other restaurants (less oily) if that could even be possible. Personally I thought their tamarind shrimp was too salty and had too much garlic. Even so I still give this place 5 stars, the staff is friendly and attentive and there's even a neighborhood discount for locals! What a lovely experience my family and I had at B Star. We made reservations on Yelp in advance and were seated with no wait time. The menu is so diverse and I love the options. My husband is vegan and they had many options for him. Their Kids Menu as great, kids loved the garlic noodles and paratha! All the dishes we got were perfection! First off I was very impressed by the staff at B Star who really step up when it comes to interacting with customers. The space is comfortable with ample seating both inside & via the covered patio. Parking in the evening during the week is not horrible, but consider using a side street during the weekend, and during the day. As for the food you have of course the Tea Leaf Salad which both B Star & Burma are known for. My Dinner tonight though was the Pork Jook, that was comforting on this cool night, and had tasty tender pork. The meal also included a spicy Samusa Soup that partnered well with a side of rice. I've been here are few times, but today we got the platha, longanisa, and mango chicken. The Platha is so good, very flakey and crispy! And the curry sauce is yummy The longanisa was alright. I loved my dining expereince at B Star! I don't think I've ever had Burmese food before so this was a great experience. It's neat how much the dishes reminded me of Indian food (from the apps to the curries)! Simply incredible. I recommend going with a group of people and sharing the dishes. This will really allow you to maximize your dining experience. For the apps, we got the BSprouts, Platha Dipper, and Vegetarian Samusas. The Bsprouts were very tasty; I never thought I would say that I enjoyed eating Brussel Sprouts but this place made them a crispy heaven. If you're familiar with Indian food, the Plathas and Samusas are synonymous with parathas (flaky bread) and samosas (fried bread w/ filling), respectively. They had a nice selection of dipping sauces for those as well. For the mains, we got the Lamb Curry, Coconut Curry Noodles, and Garlic Noodles. I thorougly enjoyed the Lamb Curry. As someone who has had my fair share of lamb curries, this was by far one of the best I have ever had. The noodle dishes were also simply divine. They were seasoned well and were very filling. Wow it's been a few years since I dined here and it's nice to see that the place hasn't changed, only a few things differed on the menu. My friend and I ordered a tea leaf salad to share and then the salmon ochazuke and the laksa noodles. It was my first time trying the laksa and man was I blown away! We demolished all of them, and liked the roti so much we ordered more at the end. For my main, I had the laksa which was a large portion and very umami and rich. Hit all the right notes. I ordered the pork tocino and hubby ordered the chili tamarind shrimp. Extremely satisfied! Both dishes were flavorful - pork tocino was slightly crispy which I very much enjoyed. I loved the combination of tomatoes, green and red onions, and pickled carrots and daikon. The egg on top was cooked just right - not too runny. I finished the entire bowl! Hubby enjoyed the crispy shrimp mixed with jalapeño peppers, onions, and red chili peppers, topped with cilantro. The dish wasn't spicy as I'd imagine. I didn't taste too much of the tamarind; more so the garlic. Nonetheless, the dish was divine! For dessert, we had the pancakes with strawberries. It wasn't fluffy to my liking. We have been regulars here over the last 6 months. Tonight, I wanted something light and got their tea leaf salad and veggie spring rolls with peanut sauce. Both hit the spot. The tea leaf salad had very fresh ingredients, I could eat this salad every day it's so delicious! The spring rolls had an interesting texture and were fresh and tasty as well (of course I'd love it if they used more avocado and mushroom ). The peanut dipping sauce is one of the best I've ever had (my fiancé was licking it off her plate ). Our favorites here are the firecracker cauliflower, the tea leaf salad, and the laksa. Warning- that firecracker cauliflower is addictive, I'm not sure what they put in it . This review is a bit unique as it's for a group event on B Star's back patio for my wife's birthday celebration. But I truly have nothing but AMAZING things to say about B Star and Shannon (Restaurant Manager). We had a 6:30 pm reservation for a full buyout of B Star's back patio and Shannon and the B Star team did a fantastic job of setting the ambience, pushing drinks and apps out in a very comfortable pace, and accommodating our requests on the fly. We started off with a "cocktail" hour where Shannon and team set up some alcoholic and non-alcoholic mixers as well as some beers which really got the mood going. Then we all sat down and transitioned into appetizers which were paced so nicely and finally, into the main courses. All the dishes were delicious and Shannon was thoughtful enough (proactively!) to provide options for vegetarian/vegan dishes and we wound down the night feeling incredibly satisfied. I even brought a cake and the staff were nice enough to cut and serve the cake for all the guests as well! Shannon also made sure the patio was set up beautifully and printed out custom menus with my wife's name on them for her birthday as well. Finally got a chance to try Burma Superstar's sister restaurant! The menu is much smaller, but that was to be expected. Got seated immediately on a Saturday night due to a cancellation so we got lucky. Otherwise expect to wait 30-45 minutes. Really liked how bright it was in the restaurant. Menu contained a lot of fusion items so we avoided those, but here's what we tried: Samosas (2/5): Filling was 90% potato and pretty bland. The sauce it comes with made it a lot better though. Laksa (3/5): Loved the noodles, shrimp was cooked and seasoned perfectly. However, the soup itself could've been spicier and more fragrant. Burmese Lamb Curry: (3.5/5): Really liked the portion size and seasoning. The texture of the pickled mangos goes well with the dish. Nothing crazy, but could definitely see myself picking this up again for a weekday dinner.
