I went on a Saturday afternoon and there was a bit of a line outside that just kept growing. It moved quickly and when I got inside there were a ton of people helping customers. I went with a crumb cake and a couple of black and white cookies. Neither disappointed ! The cake was the perfect ratio of cake to crumb, very moist, and not too sweet. Also only 9 dollars! My family has been going here for years and whenever I traveled out of state to visit family I would have to bring a couple of crumb cakes! Just went yesterday to get a seven layer cake & crumb cake. They changed the recipe of the crumb cake, no longer are the huge pieces of crumb on top that were made with delicious butter that never crumbled when you cut the cake. When I cut a piece a million crumbs fell off the top of the cake and they were very dry not moist and buttery. Obviously they're known for their crumb cake but their cookies are excellent, their simple "black and white" cake is one of my faves and they have many other wonderful cakes and turnovers, etc. Won't find Cannoli or Sfogliatella here - for that you go to (bow your head for respect) Rispoli's in Ridgefield or Emerson. I can't believe I'm saying this but my last trip here was a true waste of my money. Crumbs are great but moist cake is just as important to me and it was so dry it was inedible.The muti fruit danish ring I bought was equally dry for 7am expensive & simply not tasty unless it had filling on top all exposed danish was dry and over baked. Only a couple of days before Valentine's Day, my partner and I dropped by this iconic bakery for their famous crumb cakes in Hackensack, NJ. Opened 72 years ago, B&W is the initials standing for Boehringer & Weimer who were the original owners of this traditional German bakery. They bake their crumb cake all day long, making nearly 2,000 pounds of the famous extra-crumbly streusel topping a week. That's amazing! In 2004, The New York Times even called this cake "to die for," and you'll absolutely fall apart once you get a taste. We highly recommend this place and it's cash only. read more

After reading all the reviews I was super excited to try this bakery. But the minute I walked in I was disappointed the cakes do not look appealing at all sorry I'm judging a book by its cover but you eat with your eyes first. I love desserts so I was so excited to try a little of everything but l like I said the cakes, eclairs did not look good, sheet cake. I ended up trying the pumpkin pie( it had to he the wrose pumpkin pie I've ever had so disappointed in the taste and price), the sheet cake was horrible overly sweet it hurts your teeth, and the canoli was surprisingly good its why this bakery gets 2 stars. Beware if you're looking to have something shipped from B & W Bakery. They use GoldBelly.com as a shipping agent which is a tremendous problem. I recently purchased the "To Die For Heavy Crumb Cake" that arrived in a thin-flimsy foil bubble envelope. What a DISAPPOINTMENT! As I opened the box, I was greeted with the product that had no other shipping materials in it to protect it against the abuse of shipping, i.e., paper-wrap. I opened the bubble envelope, and right away noticed that the contents were everywhere inside the foil envelope. As I looked further, the wax paper bag that held the crumb cake was filled at the bottom with the top layers of the cake itself. By the way, the crumb cake wasn't a cake at all. The cake was broken in several small pieces. There was no way I would have been able to serve it for Thanksgiving morning. It was simply in parts. I was not happy at all!!! I then proceeded to contact B & W directly and was told that I would have to call GoldBelly.com and hash it out with them. Pass the buck. So, I contacted GoldBelly and was shuffled all over the place; finally, Carlita E asked me to take pictures of all angles to prove myself; I guess; that I wasn't lying and email those back in. So I did as asked and emailed those pictures as requested. In my e-mail to them, I asked for a replacement or my money back. After a few days of not hearing back from them, I emailed Carlita E., who directed me to their return policy. (https://help.goldbelly.com/hc/en-us/articles/224272527-What-is-your-refund-or-return-policy). It stated that "All products are FINAL SALES." I was told that they don't send replacements and do not return the money -- only issue a credit to GoldBelly.com to buy something else. I don't want anything else from them! I called B & W again to tell them what took place, and again, they said it was out of their hands. Talk to GoldBelly! What terrible customer service. What a lesson I learned. I will NEVER purchase anything from B & W Bakery and hope you don't either. I certainly don't want to lose my money, so I'm forced into rebuying something from GoldBelly, but then I won't have any dealing with them. WHAT A RIP-OFF!!! The worst thing about this is that the crumb cake doesn't even taste good. It's too thick, hard, and has a weird taste to it. It doesn't get soft if you microwave it. We went here for the first time yesterday early morning to get some sweets. We walked in and were immediately drawn to all of the delicious pastries and cookies that filled the shelves. We got a box of the cookies- AMAZING. Soooo delicious and soft. They literally melt right in your mouth. Not like some bakeries who's cookies are rock hard. My favorite ones were the ones that had the jam inside. Seriously, so delish. The sprinkled sugar cookies they have were so soft and chewy and yummy. I actually wish I had gotten more than one. We got some cannoli and chocolate eclair too. Sooooo tasty!! I got a mini lemon meringue pie and it was nice and perfectly sweet and tart. the meringue was kinda on the crunchy side which I guess I'm not used to. I was always used to it being soft, like whipped cream. Basically, my husband, me, and our daughter finished 30 bucks worth of pastry in one day. No regrets! Lol we can't wait to come back! All the items sold at the bakery are made in-house and it felt blissful. Everything smelled aromatic varying from pastries to cookies to cakes. I decided to buy the Streuselkuchen, also known as crumble cake. Each piece is enormous and perfectly satisfies my sweet tooth. The cake is moist and the crumble mixture on top is flavorful. This is the real deal---an old school bakery that has been around for years. It's easy to see why it's stood the test of time. Once you've tried some of their baked goods, you'll want to go back for more. When our daughter was planning her move to Hackensack, I asked questions about it in another forum A helpful poster told me about B & W (which stands for Boehringer & Weimer) and recommended that we try their meltaway ring. I told our daughter about B & W and soon after moving, she wasted no time going there with me in tow. Of course, we bought the meltaway ring! The meltaway ring is basically a Danish pastry ring. It looks like the ones that Entenmann's makes yet B & W's taste so much better. It's light and airy yet with some chewiness and topped with a small amount of chopped nuts plus crumb cake topping and a glaze. Every time our daughter visits us, she brings one---and it goes fast! While, it is good the way it is, we discovered that zapping it in the microwave adds a layer of goodness to it. Our daughter has also bought cupcakes from them. I've tried a vanilla one and typical of an old school bakery, it's nothing fancy. Yet, it's still good plus cheap as each cupcake costs 75 cents! She has also bought the kids' birthday cakes there and has been very pleased. They have cakes in the display cases. Pick the one you want and for a little extra money (I forget how much more) they will personalize it for you. There is no place to sit here. It's set up for take out only. I have been eating the top off their crumb cakes for years. Didn't realize they made or sold anything else really. Or maybe I did but just didn't care. What I do know is that my father would always bring home a crumb cake and my sister and I would go about quickly devouring the top. That's not to say that the bottom isn't equally as delicious because it is but it's not the same. My father would wake up the next day to find a decimated crumb cake, still inshrined in it's wax bag with the top completely eaten off. In my opinion, B&W Bakery is one of the top bakeries in Bergen County. If this is your first time visiting the bakery, I highly suggest trying the crumb cake. Their crumb cake definitely has a higher portion of crumbs than actual cake. That is what makes it so good and stands out against other bakeries in the area. If you prefer cookies, I suggest trying their linzer tarts. Their linzer tarts are very light and buttery. I suggest buying more than one because they are melt in your mouth good. The service was also very friendly and quick. They know how to move the line quick. The only con about this bakery is that it is a cash only bakery.
